Broad Street Hockey Radio is a weekly podcast that discusses current events around the Philadelphia Flyers NHL hockey team.
Hey, playoff time. Hey, playoff prediction time. Hey, BSH Radio time. We wont't bore you with a long introduction here. The Flyers and Penguins are playing hockey, and last night, some of us here at Broad Street Hockey sat on our couches, connected to Skype and talked about it. As has become tradition, we also used this show to make postseason predictions. None of us picked the Flyers, so get excited! The Flyers have a chance to win the Cup! Oh, and we got helped from a special guest, too. See the predictions chart after the jump.
In lieu of the typical preview of the evening's game, today we're bringing you yet another riveting (ha) edition of Broad Street Hockey Radio. Geoff and I missed Ben this week, but we got on just fine with the knowledge that he hates Dane Cook as much as we do. And without him, we actually did talk about hockey. From the GM meetings to the Atlantic Division playoff race to something about the Ottawa Senators, Episode 49 actually resembles a hockey podcast. Sort of.
We're back with another edition of BSH Radio, and we had a lot of catching up to do. Of course, none of that catching up had anything to do with the Philadelphia Flyers. Nonetheless, if you missed our voices, you can listen to us babble on for nearly an hour about Geoff's Thin Mints addiction and my apparent bewilderment that there are Washington Nationals fans in Washington, D.C. We tried to get this episode up on Tuesday before the Sharks game, but we had editing issues (appreciate that, crashed hard drive). You'll have to excuse the talk of "looking ahead" to the San Jose game, then. Don't worry -- hockey talk was certainly secondary this week.
A week or so ago Travis, Geoff and I got together and answered most of those questions you left us. Not all, but most. Hear all about which Flyers beat writers we would take to our deserted island, what we would get the Flyer we drew in Secret Santa (with Googling advice from Travis), and, of course, a brief suggestion about how to explain Eurovision to a toddler. And, like all great episodes of BSH Radio, this Luca Sbisa edition of the show ends with music.
Hey, new radio show! Geoff doesn't join us this week, but Ben and I talked about quite a bit. Topics covered: - Injuries to Matt Read, Danny Briere and whoever else - Chris Pronger being out of the lineup and how that hurts the defense - How Pronger's absence has a trickle down effect on the entire defensive unit, all the way to Adirondack - That whole thing with Ilya Bryzgalov - The general sort of "eh, this team is okay" feeling that's surrounding the Flyers right now - Our impending masthead trip to Glens Falls - Other stuff
In Broad Street Hockey Radio 44, I (Ben) talk to three different people. First, I talk to Geoff Detweiler, about important topics like logo-shaped pretzels and who will be the next Max Talbot. Second, I talk to a Flyer about various stuff, including 24/7 and keeping count. Third, I talk to BSH musician-in-residence MikeFive about his new song for us, which premieres at the end of this episode. Right-click the following link to save and listen to BSH Radio 44, or play the embedded version after the jump. Or, better yet, subscribe to our feed via iTunes. Enjoy.
After a lot of agonizing technical difficulties, this should work. Right-click the above to save and listen to the 43rd edition of Broad Street Hockey Radio, which recorded on the second day of the season. And since Geoff is now big-timing us with Hockey Prospectus, he's not included. Enjoy.
On this week's BSH Radio, we tried talking about the Flyers for a little while. You know, it's been a big two weeks around these parts. And after about 10 minutes of talking about all of that, we just couldn't wait to get to all of the ridiculous questions you asked. We answered every single one of them that was in the list during our show, and the result is an hour of... well, of something. Get the show after the jump.
Yeah, so that happened. In order to digest the news, Ben Rothenberg, Eric T. and myself recorded a special edition of BSH Radio without Travis. This was done at the end of a very long day for all of us, so while we try to make sense of it, we also largely try to cope with it. Is it good radio? Who knows. But it was almost cathartic for us to get it out and discuss. This wasn't your typical radio show since it was largely a free flow of ideas, thoughts, questions, and vulgar statements. There wasn't even a proper introduction. Or a proper conclusion. Doesn't matter. Jump to (hopefully) get the audio.
The end of the season is here, and on this week's BSH Radio, we try to make sense of everything that went wrong. From the goaltending to the offense to the defense to Peter Laviolette to everything in between, there's plenty to talk about this week. Unfortunately, we also spend a good deal of the show talking about the ongoing, never-gonna-stop Mike Richards saga. It's old and tired and... still a topic of conversation, unfortunately. Just a word of warning: there's a decent amount of profanity in this week's show, so uh, just a heads up. You can get it after the jump.
Once again, we've recorded what could be our last show of the 2010-11 season. But really, let's not focus on that, because the Flyers need to win tonight. We discuss the game, the Flyers chances in it, some injury stuff as it pertains to Jeff Carter and Chris Pronger... and we discuss crappy pop music from around the turn of the century. Okay, well, Ben does. We recorded this one kind of late last night, so it definitely goes off the rails a little bit. You can decide if that's a good thing or not.
So last week wasn't our last show of the season, after all. The Flyers are still alive and we're still here breaking down the postseason. We obviously turn our focus this week on BSH Radio to the Boston Bruins and the obscenely paid men who try to win hockey games for them. We also get to our second round predictions, and of course, we brag about how good our first round predictions were. Oh, and Geoff makes excuses for why he finished off with a worse record in the first round than Ben and myself did. We put him in his place.
Woo, playoff hockey. Not much of a description on this one. It's BSH Radio, it's Flyers and Sabres, and if everything goes miserably wrong over the course of the next week, it could be the last show of our season. We're pretty confident it won't be, but still. Don't chance it. Make the jump, listen. And Geoff's off this week, so you won't find yourself getting pissed off for no reason. Also, Patrick Kaleta sucks.
It's playoff time, and after getting our predictions completely wrong last year when we did this show, we decided to do it again! After the jump, you can get this weeks show, as well as a full look at The Masthead's playoff picks. The sound quality isn't the best this week. We had recording issues and had to settle for a backup recording, which we're lucky we had at all.
It's Part 3 of BSH Radio's trip to Glens Falls, New York! Isn't that exciting? Okay, we'll admit: this Part 3 isn't full of much hockey talk, but we do start out talking a bit about our impressions of the Phantoms and their local fans after a second night of hockey in upstate NY. Of course, we're doing this talking while, uh, "preparing" for a night out in Saratoga. It involved beverages. Draw your own conclusions. So this episode is a little out there, but that's not to say it's not entertaining radio. You even get to hear a fight between Don and Geoff, which is pretty hilarious to even just think about. And yes, somewhere in there you might find some redeemable hockey talk. Maybe.
Thanks to horrible hotel Internet connections and a bad broadband card (seriously, Cricket doesn't work in upstate NY... should've gone with Verizon or something), we're a little behind in documenting our awesome trip to Glens Falls. We'll have a ton of stories this coming week, including a lengthy interview with Phantoms coach Joe Paterson, but in terms of the radio show, we have three more parts to get up on the site. We recorded a show on Friday afternoon while driving north, we recorded on Saturday afternoon in between games, after Saturday's game while, um, preparing for the night out in Saratoga, and we recorded one more on Sunday while driving back to Philadelphia. So they'll be up over the next few days, and while the BS to hockey talk ratio is incredibly low, we still think the shows have the potential to be pretty entertaining. Here's the Saturday afternoon show, in which we discuss our first impressions of Glens Falls and what we liked and didn't like on the ice in Friday night's game.
A very special edition of BSH Radio this week, live from the road on the way to Glens Falls, NY. We recorded this one in the car today as myself, Geoff, Shaun and Don traveled up here for a few Phantoms games. We'll be chiming in a few times this weekend with some more editions of the show, but for now, join us as we talk about the Flyers recent play, the media with nothing to talk about, the current state of the Phantoms and what we're excited to see this weekend, and of course, Don muttering at bad drivers.
BSH Radio returns this week with a rousing game of Flyers trivia between Justin F., our reigning champion, and Pardini36, a worthy challenger for sure. We won't give away any of the details, but you'll want to hear about the time Pardini slept in an elevator.Oh, and we need a challenger for next week... so shoot me an email or drop it in the comments if you're interested.Following another edition of rousing trivia, Geoff, Ben and I sat around and talked about a whole multitude of Flyers topics. Is the slump over? (Geoff says yes.) How does Chris Pronger's injury impact the rest of the season? And how much ice time should Erik Gustafsson see while Pronger is out?
After last week's debacle of a radio show that will be thankfully tucked away in the abyss of my computer for the rest of time, we return this week with a new trivia challenger and a listen-able version of BSH Radio. Reigning champeen mikefive was challenged by Justin F., and much like an episode of Maury before the commercial break, the results will SHOCK YOU. Well, this isn't a paternity test, but whatever. Ben was absent this week, so after the SHOCKING TRIVIA GAME, Geoff and I got into the issues of the week. Should we be concerned about the Flyers right now? What exactly should we be worried about? Also, we get pretty in-depth about Eric's article on who the Flyers should face in the postseason. We talk about charts and graphs and stuff. Pretty nerdy and awesome.
We uploaded the wrong file initially. It is now fixed. If you've already downloaded another version of this episode, re-download it to get the right one... or else you'll just hear last week's show again.
The most creative man any of us know, the one-and-only Mr. Mike Five, joined the show this week to re-claim his trivia title. We won't give away the results, but Mr. Five is a smart man. Has a memory like a fox. What, foxes aren't known for their memory? Oh, whatever. We also did discuss the Versteeg trade a bit. What's his impact on this team as they prepare for the stretch run? What's his contract mean forVille Leino and the team next year? How valuable is a first round pick? All that and lots of Ovechtricks on this week's BSH Radio. Get the show below.
Hey, we're back. We'll get this semi-regular thing down eventually. It's just so hard to find things to talk about since our hockey team is damned good, ya know?Anyway, we did find a few things to talk about this week, although Ben, Geoff and I seemed to agree on just about everything this week, so it actually turned out being one of the shorter shows we've done. We chat about Matt Carle's donation drive and how people are silly to criticize him for that.We open the show with a chat about the Flyers' top opponents in the Eastern Conference -- Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay. Evgeni Malkin's injury and the Lightning's apparent dominance of the Flyers are just a few of the discussion points. Eventually, we stumble our way into a conversation about Ville Leino's contract offer and what that means for the team as they move forward. We also touch on the "Do we need a No. 1 goalie?" debate.
This is weird. The Flyers are in first place in the National Hockey League, and really, there's nothing to complain about. But we're Flyers fans. We need something to complain about, right? On this week's BSH Radio, Ben, Geoff and I try our hardest to find something to ridicule, but in the end, we basically just wind up making fun of other teams' misfortunes. In between, though, we find our way to a few meaningful discussions on Paul Holmgren's contract extension and Chris Pronger's planned (now official) return. When judging Homer's legacy (I was tempted to write Homer's Odyssey here, you can thank me later), how much blame does he deserve for last season? Was it his fault, and if the Flyers lost that shootout, would he have been fired? It's so weird because, really, the line between Holmgren potentially losing his job and him being GM Of The Year seems so thin, doesn't it?We discuss all that in great depth (and more!) on this week's BSH Radio, which you can get after the jump.
After more than a year, perhaps longer depending on your perspective, of nonstop goalie debate, it appears as though with the demotion of Michael Leighton, the goalie carousel in Philadelphia has stopped spinning. We lead off this week's BSH Radio, our first show since October, with a detailed discussion of Leighton's demotion to the Phantoms, it's impact on the team and on the salary cap. We also discuss the fact the Flyers are apparently the most stable team in the Eastern Conference. Bruce Boudreau and his saucy beard leading the Caps is a blessing in disguise for us, while the Tampa Bay Lightning win close games but lose in blowout fashion. Ben apparently is a soothsayer, because his theory on this subject was discussed before the Penguins crushed the Bolts, 8-1. Oh, and the Devils. They're terrible on an epic level, what with their minus-55 goal differential and everything. We play them twice back-to-back coming up, and that's something to celebrate.
I had cholera yesterday (apparently), so Ben and Geoff pulled off the first-ever edition of BSH Radio that doesn't feature me. So, needless to say, it's better than usual -- you'll want to listen. Ohio jokes abound. In this weeks edition, Ben and Geoff break down the terrible Columbus game, the much better Buffalo game, and what to look for in tonight's game in Pittsburgh. (Side note: what is this? Flyers-play-teams-from-depressing-cities week?) Geoff tries to compare Brian Boucher to Cole Hamels... one's the 2008 World Series MVP, the other is a career journeyman goaltender. But is there actually some truth to it? Their teams seemingly can't score for them and, as a result, they usually get the blame for losing games that should have fallen in the win column. Ben makes me nervous about taking my hosting gig with an incredible segue from discussing the Buffalo game and the Flyers inconsistent offense to Jeff Carter and his role on the team going forward. (See, I did actually listen to the show. Jerks.) Anyway, you should listen too. Get it after the jump.
After a few months off on the podcast, we're back in style this week as we discuss the new season and it's first few games. Ben, Geoff and myself talk about the Flyers defense and how much better they are when Chris Pronger is around. We talk about the offense and, in particular the penalty kill, two things that aren't supposed to go together. So far this year for the Flyers, they've certainly gone together quite well. Also, we discuss the improvements made by James van Riemsdyk and Claude Giroux over the offseason and how much of an impact they will have on the team this season. Oh, and we can't forget our dramatic reading of the little Twitter battle that went off between Sarah Baicker of CSN Philly and Frank Seravalli of the Daily News yesterday. We started it, we make fun of it. And Ben plays the part of a girl. Do tune in. Thanks to mikefive, as well, for putting together our new theme. It's rockin'.
The dog days are here. To help get through them, we welcome Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News on to our little radio program this week to help wade through the mess that was the Simon Gagne trade. Paul Holmgren has made a bit of a mess of our team in the last few weeks, and Frank joins the show to help us figure out exactly what the general manager has up his sleeve. Will the Flyers chase a goalie, perhaps one who's name begins with Marty and ends with Turco? Will they be after another winger? mikefive also joins the program and we play a rousing match of trivia. Does Ben finally go down in defeat? Find out by listening to this week's episode. We've hit the quarter-pole!
We've been scratching our heads over the last few weeks trying to understand exactly what Paul Holmgren has up his sleeve. Whether it's signing goons to long term deals, planning on trading a fan favorite who's spent 11 years here, signing a goalie before the seeing what was available on the open market, trading for a defenseman who makes a lot of money when more financially friendly options were clearly available, etc., Homer has made more than a few questionable moves so far this summer. On this week's episode of BSH Radio, Ben, Geoff and myself try to make sense of everything that's been done this summer. What moves were solid? What moves were dumb? Why were they all made? And what should we expect the rest of the offseason on the transaction front? Also, we play more games and we try to come up with a name for Geoff's new cat.
Another show, another discussion about goalies. Maybe it'll end someday. Sigh. We welcome Jason Plank and Matt Taylor from Fear The Fin onto the show this week to discuss everything Evgeni Nabokov. The big question, is he a playoff dud? After the Nabokov talk, we discuss the Flyers other goaltending hopes, as well as what else they should do tomorrow when free agency opens. Defensemen, forwards, etc. Geoff and I discuss it all in our first show ever without Ben. Sad.
The first show of the offseason is chock full of hockey talk. In fact, it might be the longest show we've ever put together. To open, we're joined by Tim McManus of the Glens Falls Post Star. Tim was kind enough to join us for quite some time while we discussed the Flyers recent signing of Johan Backlund. What does Backlund's signing mean for the rest of the organization's goaltending prospects? What does it mean for the Flyers goaltending search this summer? We also talk about the new news regarding the Phantoms eventual move to Allentown. What does the timetable look like? The Hershey Bears won another Calder Cup this week. We talk about what that means for the rest of the league, and we talk about how awesome an organization the Bears are. After Tim leaves us, we turn our focus back to the Flyers. No time to reminisce, really: it's full speed ahead to the offseason. We talk goaltending for a while, we talk Jeff Carter for a bit, and then we play a game. It's more interesting than this blurb suggests.
Well, here we are. One game left in the Flyers season, perhaps. They're 5-0 in this situation, but this Finals thing is a different animal. We don't know how this will turn out, and honestly, the Boston series and the entire past doesn't matter at this point. We do, however, know a few things. We know that the Flyers lost Game 5, for example. On this week's BSH Radio, Ben, Geoff and I talk about how the Flyers got here. What went wrong in Game 5? Was pulling Michael Leighton the right move? Can they take the performance from the second half of that game and improve upon it for Game 6? And what about Game 6? Will we see any line shuffling? Will Chris Pronger return to form? Will Dustin Byfuglien, then, revert to his Game 1 thru 4 form? Ultimately, can the Flyers force a Game 7 back in Chicago on Friday night?
The Flyers are down 0-2 in the Stanley Cup Final, but do not fear. BSH Radio is here. Or something. On this week's program, we break down the Flyers pair of losses in Chicago to open the series. What went wrong? Should the Flyers feel fortunate that the games were close? Should the Blackhawks feel lucky that they squeaked them both out? What about matchups? Was putting Dan Carcillo back in the right idea? But most of the focus of the show is on tonight's Game 3. The Flyers return home with a chance to either make this a series or hand the Blackhawks a Cup this evening, but returning home gives the boys in orange and black reason for optimism. They get the crowd boost, of course, and they'll hopefully get some bounces in their favor on home ice. Ben, Geoff and myself discuss the hopes for the series and what we think happens from here on out. Oh, and lots of Oskars Bartulis talk. Never anything wrong with that, now.
The Cup Finals are here, and while we'll likely be stepping up the radio game during the next two weeks or so, we're here with our typical Wednesday show this week. On the show this week, Ben, Geoff and I spend a few minutes on the celebration of an Eastern Conference Championship, but much like the team itself, we quickly turn the page to the Chicago Blackhawks. What are their strengths? Their weaknesses? What are the big matchups we should keep an eye on? Do the Flyers stand a chance? We'll tell you right now that, yes, we make our predictions for the Final on this week's show, and yes, Geoff does pick against the Flyers again. It's working. But for Ben and myself, it's a pretty insane question. It's not just making a prediction. It's asking the question "will the Flyers win the Stanley Cup? Absolutely wild.
A lost episode of BSH Radio from May 20, 2010. Flyers lead Montreal 2-0 in the Eastern Conference Finals.
While it's still hard to believe that the Flyers have moved on to the Eastern Conference Finals, and it's even harder to believe that they have home-ice advantage in those Conference Finals, reality says it's happening. The Flyers will take on the Habs at Wachovia Center this evening, and to get you ready for the game, we bring you a special weekend edition of BSH Radio. To begin, we contemplate the history the Flyers made over the weekend. Ben, Geoff and I talk about the madness that was Game 7 and the unbelievable feat this Flyers team put together. But we must look ahead eventually, and we do as we try to break down the Montreal series as best we can. We also make our picks for the next round, in which Geoff picks against the Flyers for the third straight series. The team is clearly using his picks as bulletin board material, so for this, we thank him.
It's incredible, isn't it? Brian Boucher goes down to injury, Michael Leighton steps in, the Flyers go on to win Game 5 in dominating fashion, and somehow, someway, our confidence is at an all-time high in this series with the Bruins. Really, truly incredible. This week on BSH Radio, Ben, Geoff and I discuss the pretty surreal circumstances that surround the Flyers right now. We talk about Boucher's injury, Gagne's return, Krejci's loss and the slim-but-ever-growing chance that the Flyers can actually pull off something amazing in this series. If the Flyers lose in Game 6, is the season a success? If the Flyers force Game 7 and lose, is the season a success? If the Flyers win the series and then lose, is the season a success? We try to answer these questions on this week's show. In addition to the usual plethora of Flyers talk, we discuss the other happenings around the NHL, from the Canucks-Blackhawks series to the San Jose Sharks eliminating the defending Western Conference champions, to the other series in the East between Pittsburgh and Montreal. We also talk a bit about the Phoenix Coyotes ownership mess and what it could mean for the future of the team.
We pick the second round and review our round 1 prognostications. Short show -- 20 minutesish.
Anthony SanFillippo of the Delaware County Times is our guest this week on BSH Radio. Our first ever repeat guest, SanFillippo is the one writer on the Flyers beat who actually gives our humble little site the time of day. In fact, he actually has shown up to commune with us a few times, soi n that regard, we respect him more than just about anybody else on the beat. But it's not like we had him on the show again because he gets internet media. No, he knows the Flyers pretty damn well too, and he's actually a pretty timely guest since he's been at the core of a few mini-controversies lately. Late last week, SanFillippo threw a post up on his blog saying he was "embarrassed to be a hockey writer" after his colleagues from the Professional Hockey Writers Association named Capitals defenseman Mike Green as a finalist for the Norris Trophy. We talk about those criticisms and the harsh words he had for his fellow writers on this weeks show. We also take a step back to the week prior and discuss his criticisms of the atmosphere at Prudential Center in Newark. It's not all the off-ice stuff, though. We also talked with SanFillippo about the loss of Ian Laperriere, who the Flyers should hope to play come the second round, the potential return of Michael Leighton, and finally, we discuss his justification for comparing Mike Richards to Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman.
The Flyers have a 3-1 series lead of the New Jersey Devils. This is very, very good. Jeff Carter and Simon Gagne are both injured, though, and this is kind of on the opposite side of the happiness spectrum. On this week's edition of Broad Street Hockey Radio, we discuss all of these things. From the impact of the injuries to Carts and Gags (or Gaggy, as the kids are calling him), to the phenomenal play of Brian Boucher and Claude Giroux, to the invisible play of Ilya Kovalchuk and Zach Parise. We also discuss some action from around the NHL playoffs and we report on Mike Richards' Lady Byng scare.
The playoffs are here, and we cover them on this week's edition of Broad Street Hockey Radio. To kick off the show, Geoff, Ben and I were joined by Steve Lepore. He writes the wonderful hockey media blog Puck The Media, which covers all things surrounding the coverage of the sport. Lepore is also a Devil(s fan), and he writes over at SBN's Devils' blog, In Lou We Trust. We talked to Steve about why the Flyers-Devils quarterfinal series is being ignored by national television, much to the dismay of displaced Philadelphians. We also talked about the Devils team, of course. Why should we be worried about the Devils? Does the regular season matter? After he signed off, the BSH trio talked about the series a little more in-depth. Will the excitement of this past weekend carry over and translate into playoff success? How will Jeff Carter help the Flyers? Can our defense shut down Zach Parise and Ilya Kovalchuk? ... Boosh? Get the show after the jump. The hour-ish-long program is a perfect lead in to get you pumped for Flyers playoff hockey tonight.
Before we taped this week's edition of BSH Radio on Tuesday night, we had no idea how things would turn out over the last two nights. We didn't know the Flyers would beat the Leafs, we didn't know the Rangers would fall to the Sabres, and we didn't know the Rangers would rebound and crush those same Leafs a night later. What it all adds up to, of course, is a two-game battle royale to finish off the season this weekend between the orange and black and the hated Blueshirts. We assumed that this would likely be the case at recording time, so we enlisted Joe Fortunato of Blueshirt Banter to come on this week's show and discuss that hated franchise from the north. Prior to our chat with Joe, however, we welcomed Justin, aka JFein, onto the program to challenge Ben Rothenberg in a trivia duel. Discover the winner by listening to the show.
On this week's show, we discuss at great length the complex state of goaltending in the Flyers organization. From Ray Emery to Michael Leighton to Brian Boucher to Johan Backlund and beyond, who will be the backup this week? Who will be the goalie next year? What about next years backup? What about next years AHL goalies? Can Brian Boucher win a round this year in the playoffs? None of these questions have clear answers, but we try to answer them on this weeks show. Beyond that, what's the deal with the multitude of goaltending prospects that call the Flyers organization home? From Joacim Eriksson to Nic Riopel to Michael Teslak, where will they all be next season and beyond? It's all goaltending all the time this week on BSH Radio.
Short show this week, and it's a few days late, too. Sorry about that. We taped on Tuesday night and I was supposed to have this up Wednesday morning, but those are the breaks. So what that it's Friday? Anyway, as mentioned, it was a shorter show this week. Ben, Geoff and I talked for about 20 minutes regarding Jeff Carter's injury and how it hinders the Flyers chances going forward. We were then joined by Shaun Kreider, known as KreiderDesigns here on the site, to talk a little bit about the BSH Store that opened for business the other day. Shaun spoke about the creative process and how he came up with some of the ideas. Afterward, he challenged Ben to a rousing game of Flyers trivia... the closest match so far. See who won by listening to the show, after the jump.
Tim McManus, Adirondack Phantoms beat writer at the Glens Falls Post-Star, joins the show this week to talk about everything Phantoms. Unfortunately, at recording, we weren't aware of Johan Backlund's injury, but that doesn't take away from the discussion we had at all.We talked about the inseparable defensive duo, Kevin Marshall and Marc-Andre Bourdon. We talked goalies, from Backlund to Jeremy Duchesne (now a Flyer?!) to Nic Riopel. We talked forwards, from Patrick Maroon to Stefan Legein. Tim gave us updates on Mika Pyorala and Danny Syvret. Syvret is injured, by the way. We also checked on on Ryan Dingle (yeah, the throw-in from the Pronger deal) to see if he ever has a shot at making the NHL. Greeted with laughter. Finally, we discuss the future of the Phantoms in Glens Falls and when we should expect to see them in the Lehigh Valley. After Tim leaves us, we play back this week's trivia competition. William, aka CoburnsCuddleBuddy, came on to challenge Mr. Ben Rothenberg. Listen to find the results. Get the show after the jump.
As we prepare for the trade deadline, we welcome Donny Rivette from Litter Box Cats, a man who covers possibly the most active deadline team in the league. Everybody is for sale in Florida, it seems, so the timing is right to have Donny on the show. We talked about his team, his thoughts one what they might look like after Wednesday's deadline and if they'll be a competitive hockey team come that time. David Booth will be playing tonight for the first time against the Flyers, so we talked to Donny about the impact that may have on Wednesday night's game. We also chatted about Tomas Vokoun and his likely availability at Wednesday's deadline. Oh, and a Dennis Seidenberg reference is dropped. We then move on to some more Flyers-centric stuff, specifically Ray Emery's potentially career-ending injury and what that means for the Flyers moving forward at the deadline. Roloson? Vokoun? Ellis? Biron? We also listen in on a voicemail from a caller angry about Sidney Crosby.
On this week's edition of Broad Street Hockey Radio, it's clear that the Olympic break has gone to our heads a little bit. In an effort to spice up the proceedings since there isn't much Flyers related stuff to talk about, Travis put together a little Flyers related trivia game for Ben and Geoff to play against each other. There was a decisive winner of the contest, and if you'd like to challenge him in a future show, let us know ASAP. Listen to the show to find out who the winner was, of course. Also, trying to spice things up a little more and inspire some listener interaction, we welcomed frequent commenter Jason, aka HockeyOutsiders, on the show to talk some Flyers hockey, as well as what it's like to be a Canadian and a Flyers fan simultaneously. Oh, and since it's the Olympic season, we had to talk some curling. Ben also prepared a heartfelt eulogy for our brothers in arms, the Latvian Olympic hockey team, and he delivered it towards the beginning of this week's show. We also talked some Olympic hockey and whether or not Chris Pronger's poor play in the tournament is a concern going forward.
On this week's edition of Broad Street Hockey Radio, we speak to Mike Boone, the columnist from the Montreal Gazette who compared the Flyers to Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany. Mr. Boone gave us his justification for making the comments, which were considered outlandish by some and downright offensive by others. He also responded to a few questions and comments from BSH readers, as well as whether or not he feels he should be temporarily suspended from his position at the Gazette for the comments he made. The conversation is an interesting case study in just how differently certain members of the traditional media understand the difference between what is printed in the newspaper and what is printed on the Internet. It's safe to say that those of us who are exclusively on the web see this divide differently. Moving on, Ben joins the show and the three of us chat about the salary cap issues, or lack thereof, that the Flyers face heading into this offseason. We address criticisms of Danny Briere and go off on several tangents, including wondering if the Philadelphia Kixx are still around town. We also answer a question or two from listeners ourselves because, well, it's the Olympic break and there's not much else to talk about. Get the show after the jump.
On this week's edition of Broad Street Hockey Radio, Geoff and I have a lengthy discussion with SanFillippo about everything you could possibly imagine about the team. We talk about Ray Emery's injury and how it'll affect his contract talks. Does he think it should? We'll talk about a column he wrote over the weekend that seemed to be a veiled criticism of Paul Holmgren. He tells us if it was. Sticking with the same subject, we ask SanFillippo if Holmgren is really, truly serious about saying that he won't trade Jeff Carter. We also talk about the Olympics and a few media-related things before some fun talk about who the best player in the locker room to get a quote from might be. It's a 40 minute chat and his answers are unbelievably in depth. It's highly recommended. After the interview, Ben joins the show from snowy, Internet-less D.C. The three of us talk about the Emery injury, what it means for the future at the goaltender position in Philadelphia, Jeff Carter's hit on Anssi Salmela, the Olympics, and the potential that the NHL Draft and the NHL All-Star Game could come to Philadelphia.
On this week's edition of Broad Street Hockey Radio, we jump in right off the bat and talk about Dan Carcillo's beatdown of Marian Gaborik last week. Should Gaborik have dropped the gloves with Carcillo? Should a teammate have stepped in? Was there a lack of honor in it, as John Tortorella said there was? We then bring in Frank D from Pensburgh and fromtherink.com to talk all things Pittsburgh Penguins, mostly surrounding the game from this past weekend. He talks about goalie Brent Johnson. Is he really a decent goalie or did the Flyers just not get the job done against him on Sunday? What about the fledgling Pens power play? Are the Flyers even considered a threat to the Penguins anymore?Moving on, we peer into the future and try to figure out what the Flyers may do at the trade deadline. Paul Holmgren has said he's looking for a defenseman, so who's available? Should the Flyers even do anything? Is trading for prospects instead of roster players a smarter idea? And what about this offseason? What's the plan there?Much shorter show this week, but you'll have to deal. Thanks for listening as always, of course.
Sarah Baicker of CSNPhilly.com joins on us this weeks program. We talk about the recent battle in the ongoing war between Mike Richards and the Philadelphia media and her take on the situation as a member of one side of that feud. We also talk about some other media-related stuff, including CSN Philly's rise in the Internet realm. But in shifting back to hockey, Sarah gives us her take on the current crop of Flyers, Ray Emery's return, and if we should have hope for this Flyers team to still make a deep run in the postseason.Geoff, Ben, and I also discuss the two most recent games the Flyers have played in, versus Washington and Columbus. We talk at length about Emery's' return. Was it too soon? Did he improve against Columbus on Tuesday? Also, Ben was in attendance at Verizon Center in DC on Sunday and he gives us his first hand take on just how much he likes Caps fans.
On the first edition of the program, the three of us talk about Thursday night's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Was it a case of the Flyers looking ahead to the Capitals on Sunday, or are there greater concerns here? How much should we worry about this game in particular? We talk about the fights that took place and the hype that built up heading into the game. Did Scott Hartnell's absence from the lineup take away from the potential for early fisticuffs? We also discuss our thoughts the physical play that did take place toward the end of the game, namely Jay Rosehill, Colton Orr, and their gang of thieves. We move on from the game and talk about the FSN Pittsburgh incident. Did FSN's producer know that his actions would have such a large impact on the game? What should the NHL do going forward to prevent these things from happening? We somehow find our way back to on-ice stuff and discuss Michael Leighton, his stellar play of late, and when we might see Ray Emery playing hockey again. We also speculate on Brian Boucher's future in Philadelphia now that he appears to be the odd man out. How much of Ole-Kristian Tollefsen's poor play against the Leafs to blame on his injury? Is he looking forward to the Olympics, too? How about Danny Syvret's resurgence as a strong defenseman (and offensive dynamo) prior to his injury? You'll never guess how much money his Winter Classic jersey is going for in an auction.
