The Los Angeles Kings have turned to Peter Laviolette as their new head coach, a move that feels like a logical short-term fit for a team looking to remain competitive while its young core continues to develop. In Edmonton, reports that several Oilers stars played a major role in interviewing Mike Babcock have sparked debate about how much influence players should have in coaching hires and where the balance of power lies between the dressing room and management. The Babcock process remains in limbo with no clear timeline for the league's review, leading to questions about whether the Oilers could revisit Bruce Cassidy if things fall apart, or whether they already know Vegas won't permit that conversation. Meanwhile, the Stanley Cup Final is tied after Carolina's Game 4 win, powered by two more goals from captain Jordan Staal, who has been a dominant force at age 37 with five goals in four games and countless key faceoff victories. The series has produced an incredible 33 goals through four games, the second-highest total in Final history at that stage, fueled by relentless pressure and goaltending that has been solid but hardly dominant. Carolina finds itself in a near must-win situation in Game 2, as headed to Vegas down 0-2 seems like too big of a hill to climb for any team.D espite neither side being thrilled with its Game 1 performance, Vegas showed why their confidence is at an all-time high, recovering from an early 2-0 deficit and continuing a stretch in which they haven’t lost in two weeks. John Tortorella earned praise for his in-game adjustments, while the Hurricanes’ top line remained largely ineffective. Both Ray and Dregs expect stronger outings from the goaltenders and are leaning toward a Carolina bounce-back, though they agree the margin between the teams remains razor thin. Off the ice, Peter Laviolette and Patrick Roy have advanced in Toronto’s coaching search, though the Leafs’ direction remains unclear compared to Edmonton’s more defined approach; Roy’s recent success developing top prospect Peter Schaefer could be a factor with Toronto holding the first overall pick. Meanwhile, the Oilers continue to wait on the coaching market, raising questions about whether Edmonton is willing to hold out for Bruce Cassidy, or if a backup candidate is already in place. In Nashville, the Predators landed a major front-office hire by prying Chris MacFarland away from Colorado with a lucrative deal, giving him the opportunity to build a team backed by ownership willing to spend to improve the team.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ryan Warsofsky just completed his second season as the head coach of the NHL's San Jose Sharks, this past season leading them to 39 wins, an 18 win improvement over 2025. He also served as the head coach for the U.S. Men's National Team for the first time at the 2025 IIHF Men's World Championship, winning a gold medal. Prior to joining the Sharks, Warsofsky was the head coach of the Chicago Wolves of the AHL for two seasons (2020-22), where, in 2022, at age 34, he became the youngest coach since Peter Laviolette in 1999 to guide a team to the Calder Cup. He also spent two seasons with the AHL's Charlotte Checkers, one as an assistant (2018-19) and one as head coach (2019-20). In 2019, he helped guide the Checkers to a Calder Cup. Warsofsky's coaching career began in 2012-13 with his alma mater NCAA Division III Curry College as an assistant after two seasons with the team as a player. He then joined the ECHL's South Carolina Stingrays in 2013, serving as an assistant for three seasons before being promoted to head coach and director of hockey operations for his final two seasons (2016-18). In our conversation today, we discuss what it is like to be the youngest head coach in the NHL and the leadership dynamic that he brings to the locker room. We discuss the importance of joy, patience, Ryan's non-negotiables, and what makes a great leader. We also discuss coaching Gen Z athletes, the importance of fundamentals, and how to negotiate the world of social media to continue to build trust and great team culture. Tyler Yaremchuk and Liam Horrobin are back with another offseason edition of Oilersnation Everyday, continuing to break down the fallout from the Edmonton Oilers moving on from head coach Kris Knoblauch. The guys discuss what the coaching change means for Edmonton heading into next season and whether the Oilers could fast-track their search if Bruce Cassidy is truly their top target.
Montreal took a 3–2 series lead over Buffalo, in part, by sticking with Jakub Dobes despite a rough first period and a bad third goal against, a decision by Martin St. Louis and goalie coach Marco Marciano that paid off as Dobes settled in and the Habs rolled to a 6–3 win with offence throughout the lineup. Cole Caufield appears to have found his game, while Buffalo’s stars have been too quiet and the Sabres may need line changes and better discipline heading into a potentially chaotic Game 6 at the Bell Centre. Vegas eliminated Anaheim as Mitch Marner scored what the guys called the goal of the playoffs on an outrageous between-the-legs move, while the Ducks still showed major progress this season despite needing more defensive structure and experience. In Edmonton, the Oilers fired Kris Knoblauch just before his extension was set to begin after reports leaked the team unsuccessfully sought permission to speak with Bruce Cassidy, making the situation feel messy and leaving names like Craig Berube and Peter Laviolette in the mix. Toronto also moved on from Berube as new GM John Chayka appears focused on hiring a younger, more data-driven coach, with Kris Knoblauch, Jay Woodcroft and David Carle among the names discussed. Meanwhile, Vancouver revamped its front office by naming the Sedin twins co-presidents of hockey ops and promoting Ryan Johnson to GM, while questions remain about whether the Canucks can keep Manny Malhotra in the organization amid growing interest in him as a head coach elsewhere.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Nick Kypreos, Justin Bourne and Sam McKee kick off by reacting to some big news out in Western Canada: the Oilers parting ways with head coach Kris Knoblauch, and the Canucks announcing the Sedin twins as co-presidents and Ryan Johnson as GM. They discuss whether the Oilers' move forces the Leafs to act faster in the head-coaching market, and they evaluate Patrick Roy, Peter Laviolette, and Manny Malhotra's potential fit behind Toronto's bench. Later, Oilers Now's Bob Stauffer (28:45) stops by to discuss what led to the Oilers' decision on Knoblauch, who — aside from Bruce Cassidy — the team is considering to be the next head coach, and the Connor McDavid aspect of the coaching change. Finally, Nick, Justin and Sam discuss the potential of a Morgan Rielly-Darnell Nurse swap.
