After Tim and Matt discuss the sheer joy of Raiders of the Lost Ark and how to basically hush and have fun, Tim starts to target Matt and call out his graduate exploits. Really he's looking at Indiana Jones as the ultimate Poindexter Come Alive, a character type he traces in Ball of Fire and Losing Ground. Are you the type of academic who mugs at the camera in Peruvian temples, fights crime, or gets pedantic about the concept of art?

In this episode, hosts Alan and Walt welcome returning guest, Tim Andrews, host of the podcast Radio Labyrinth and a voice on The Von Haessler Doctrine radio show. Since we've spent time with Tim before, we didn't start at the beginning of his radio career. Instead, we decided to look at the start of his path toward parenthood. At age 50, Tim is about to become a first-time dad! Much of the interview becomes a discussion on parenting. Alan is already an empty-nester and Walt is not far behind. They discuss the difference of the times and caution raising a child only with an iPad. It's great to embrace technology, but we all live in the real world. It is important for all parents to make sure their kids learn to exist there and not just the virtual one. After Tim leaves, Walt begins his movie review in a world of artic sharks. Not surprisingly, it's another bad movie for him, though not as bad as the last few have been. After that, Alan and Walt share a few wacky news items before jumping into the entertainment segment. WATCHING Walt highly recommended the stand-up comedy special on Netflix called, Why Would You Do That? by Sebastian Maniscalco. He said it was really funny and hoped the comedian would tour the area soon. Walt also suggests, This is a Robbery. The Netflix documentary is about the largest art heist in history. Alan continues to give Falcon and the Winter Soldier positive reviews. He also stumbled across a documentary on YouTube called, Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan - Interviews. It is a behind the scenes look at some of the scenes in the film and great interviews with the cast. Alan said he had never seen any of it before and is a must-watch for any classic Trek fans. Tim recommends binging Snowfall on FX. He is also enjoying the animated superhero show on Amazon Prime called, Invincible. Tim did enjoy the Zack Snyder cut of Justice League, saying it was a superior film to the original release. Finally, Tim is also watching the comedy, Ireland, on Amazon Prime. READING Tim is re-reading The Dark Tower series for the hundredth time. He said he and his podcast co-hosts may do a special episode in the future discussing the epic work by Stephen King. Walt is still trying to finish, "Running with the Devil." LISTENING Walt did a shout out to Tim's podcast, Radio Labyrinth. He is also listening to Office Space Minute and discovered Warriors in Their Own Words. Tim loves listening to the podcast, Talking Sopranos. Alan has been on a music kick this past week, listening to the Iron Maiden 2016 release, Book of Souls. He is also listening to a lot of Nightwish and 2002. Finally, he gives a shoutout for the podcast, History of the Marine Corps.

65. 3 Secrets to Effectively Use Social Selling

Welcome back to the second episode with Tim Hughes. Tim is recognized by many as the world's leading expert on social selling. In our first episode with Tim, we discussed his career in social selling, common objections and mistakes in social selling, and how COVID-19 will impact business going forward. In today's episode, Tim shares 3 secrets of effective social selling and examples of good and bad social selling. 3 Secrets of Social Selling Here are 3 of Tim's secrets to social selling:   A Buyer-Centric Profile   The first thing we need is a buyer-centric profile. It's not a profile where we say how great we are, how many times we've made news, etc. It's also not a profile where we focus on our company or product.  We need to put ourselves in our buyer's shoes and say, “Okay, if I were a buyer, what would I be looking for in a person who is going to help me?” A buyer is looking for help, not someone to sell them something. This isn't about selling; it's about getting a conversation. Once we get to the conversation, the person will give us permission to pitch or not. There are three types of people. One is someone we can sell to. Another is someone we can get a referral from. So they may say, “I'm not the person you need to talk to, but you need to talk to my brother-in-law. He's actually looking for this right now.” The third person is what Tim calls someone with a big mouth, which is somebody who will take our insights and our influence and share it through the network. For examples of great buyer-centric profiles, check out Tim's LinkedIn profile or the profiles of Priscilla McKinney, Eric Doyle, Adam Gray, or Vanessa Gartell.   A Large Network   The next thing we need is a network. This is not just a bunch of contacts. These are people we don't necessarily need to have a phone conversation with, but we need to know. These are people that we could have a conversation with if they came to us. “You need to build a network, and your network needs to be as big, as wide, and as varied as you can have it.” - Tim Hughes BMW is one of Tim's clients, and they have about 100,000 employees. So to sell to BMW, we would have to be connected to 1,000 people. Tim does risk forecasts by using social for his clients. One client was selling to Domino's Pizza, and they said it was a done deal to happen that quarter. Tim said, “It won't happen.” When they asked why, Tim said, “Because the salesperson isn't connected to anybody in Domino's Pizza.” The sale didn't happen. If the salesperson isn't connected to anybody in the meeting, there's no relationship there.   Humanizing Content   The third thing we need is content. Tim's company has done the research for what content works and what content doesn't work. Unsurprisingly, the content that doesn't work is advertising because no one's interested in our products, services, or anything that says our company is great. However, people are interested in our people.  Eric, one of Tim's employees, posted about his family going to the beach for his son's 16th birthday. The post got 168 likes or comments and about 10,000 views. It took him 10 minutes to post, and from that post, he got 168 leads, two proposals, and one purchase order. There is not one single demand generation method out there (cold calling, advertising, email marketing) that can generate that kind of result in ten minutes. That's the difference digital dominance makes. “The more humanized that you can be with your content, the more engagement you get.” - Tim Hughes Examples of Poor Social Selling  One of Tim's friends used to work at an organization, and this organization had a poor social selling strategy. They would have someone post something, and then tell everyone in the organization to go like it. Tim said there was even an employee whose title was “social selling expert,” but they clearly didn't understand social selling. Tim went into a big corporate organization to help them with their social selling. In a meeting, they told Tim their social selling was going very well. They said they were sending out brochures through emails. Tim turned to the gentleman next to him and asked him what he does when he gets an email. He said, “I just delete them.” Tim turned to the woman in charge of marketing and asked her what she does when she gets an email. She said, “I just delete them.” The two turned to each other and realized that it was actually not going well at all. Brochures don't create sales conversations or great sales. The trust and the likability that comes from conversations can cause the sale. Though, we don't necessarily have to like someone to trust them and buy from them. Examples of Effective Social Selling  Tim was recently working with a drains company. They did a pilot program of 6 people for 3 months. In those three months, they got 26,608 likes and 2,688 comments, just about 30,000 interactions. Interaction on social media is an opportunity to have a conversation. So, even if we took out 20% of those because they were friends liking the posts, that's still a massive opportunity to have conversations with people. Before Tim started helping them, their goal had been 4 sales-qualified leads a week. After Tim came in, they were getting 12-14. They got just under 2 million views, and they've grown their network by about 5,000 people. So think of that as increasing an email database by 5,000, except unlike an email database, we actually know the people, have had an interaction, and they know and trust us. There's another company Tim has worked with that got 100% ROI. That transformation is bigger than Tim's wildest dreams. At that point, it's a money-making machine. For every $1 they put in, they get $2 back. Because of that, they don't need an advertising budget. What Metrics to Track in Social Selling Two of the most important metrics Tim's company tracks are revenue and inbound clients. Generally, he has his clients create a campaign code, tracking business found through social media and business influenced through social media. Business found through social media is when the company puts out a post, and they get a response or an opportunity. Business found through influence is when the company goes into a particular account and connects to lots of people, growing its influence in that particular account. Key Takeaways Thank you so much Tim for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: We should humanize our content. Focus on what a buyer is looking for in our profiles. They are probably looking for help, and probably not for our company, brand, products, or services. Having a large network of people who like us and trust us will allow us to sell more easily. When we have connections to the people we are selling to, they are more likely to buy from us. If our content focuses on people instead of products, we will have more engagement. This morning Tim Jones spoke from Matthew 12:22-37. James Farley then led the time of prayer, praying: • For the places where we are living drawing on what God said to his people in Exile to ‘seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper' (Jeremiah 29:7) • After Tim spoke, there was then prayer of thanking God that, through the cross of Jesus Christ, he has plundered the strong man's house so that we can walk in victory and freedom • Looking at Ephesians 6:10-12, praying this in: ‘Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.'

Transferring Jurisdictions: Since I was still on Supervised Release, making a move to Newport Beach would not be so easy. I reported to a probation officer in a different judicial district. As a resident of the San Francisco Bay area, authorities required that I report to a probation officer in the Northern Judicial District of California.   Tim’s employment offer required that I relocate to the Central Judicial District of California. Besides convincing my probation officer to support my move, I’d have to persuade a probation officer from the Central District to authorize my transfer. If I could overcome those challenges, I’d have a few additional complications to resolve.   Fortunately, the seeds I began sowing from the start of my journey positioned me well to seize opportunities like the one Tim offered. I felt confidant Carole and I would be able to transition from Northern California to Orange County. But I needed to see what she thought. After Tim made his offer, I called Carole to ask what she would like me to do.   “Take the job.” She didn’t hesitate.   As an experienced registered nurse who was pursuing a graduate degree, Carole expressed confidence that she would find new employment. Carole always supported efforts to build a career around my journey, but she liked the idea of me transitioning away from the prison industry and into other ventures. Tim’s compelling job offer opened a world of opportunity.   With Carole’s support, I consulted with two of my closest friends, Justin and Lee. Both of them were like brothers to me. I’d been working with Justin and the nonprofit foundation he created. We used that foundation as a resource to both fund and distribute products that spread our message of personal growth, accountability, and developing critical thinking skills. If I accepted Tim’s offer, I’d have less time available to work with him. Yet when I told him of the opportunity, Justin saw the value.   “If you become more successful, your story will inspire more people that the lessons we offer really work. Your success could lead to more orders, and it sounds like you’ll still be able to devote time to work on our projects. Take the job. We’ll both have to work harder, but we’ll figure it out along the way.”   Lee and I had spoken about Tim before. Since Tim was an entrepreneur and visionary who built businesses that grew to billions in revenues, he would impress any businessman. Lee liked hearing stories about others who built successful businesses from nothing more than ideas. When I told him that Tim invited me to join his team, Lee encouraged me to accept. “Sounds like an opportunity to learn, contribute, and grow. Take it.”   With encouragement from Justin and Lee, I took the next step of contacting my probation officer. Once I had support from probation, I contacted Jeff at SFSU and told him that I would not return to teach in the fall of 2014. Instead, Carole and I would be moving to Southern California.     Return on Investment: We had only recently finalized the mortgage to finance our house. The housing market in the San Francisco Bay area was on fire and we likely could’ve sold our house easily for a substantial profit. Yet I felt strongly that housing prices would continue to rise. Carole agreed. Rather than selling our property, we agreed that we would make our first real estate purchase a part of our retirement plan. Instead of selling, we’d find suitable tenants who would rent from us. The rental income we received would allow us to pay the mortgage.   Carole led that initiative to find suitable tenants by running an ad on Craig’s list. More than a dozen applications came to us within days. During the year that we lived in the property, Carole wanted to decorate to make the house more “homey.” Yet I considered the investment as a stepping-stone, something we would eventually rent. Instead of decorating, we kept the house stark, looking new. It was part of a longer-term strategy to eventually attract stable tenants who would want to make the house their home.   Chris and Seth equipped our house with upgrades like granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, and a whirlpool bath. Carole and I were going to miss the house, but we found a wonderful family with impeccable references who pledged to take good care of our property. They loved the neighborhood and signed a long-term lease, expressing interest to remain until their children graduated from high school. Carole’s due diligence contributed to us finding the right family. The $2,800 monthly rent would cover our $2,500 mortgage payment, leaving us with a reserve to pay our annual property taxes.   Since we financed our property with a 15-year mortgage, a significant portion of each payment would apply to principle reduction. Our debt on the property would drop by $1,500 each month, allowing us to build equity quickly. After 15 years, Carole and I would own the property free and clear. We considered the investment as an awesome resource to advance our plans for a stable retirement. Owning real estate, it would seem, could become an integral component of our plan to build a million-dollar net worth within five years. Carole and I made a commitment to work together in ways that would position us to acquire more.

The first show of the offseason is chock full of hockey talk. In fact, it might be the longest show we've ever put together. To open, we're joined by Tim McManus of the Glens Falls Post Star. Tim was kind enough to join us for quite some time while we discussed the Flyers recent signing of Johan Backlund. What does Backlund's signing mean for the rest of the organization's goaltending prospects? What does it mean for the Flyers goaltending search this summer? We also talk about the new news regarding the Phantoms eventual move to Allentown. What does the timetable look like? The Hershey Bears won another Calder Cup this week. We talk about what that means for the rest of the league, and we talk about how awesome an organization the Bears are. After Tim leaves us, we turn our focus back to the Flyers. No time to reminisce, really: it's full speed ahead to the offseason. We talk goaltending for a while, we talk Jeff Carter for a bit, and then we play a game. It's more interesting than this blurb suggests.

Tim McManus, Adirondack Phantoms beat writer at the Glens Falls Post-Star, joins the show this week to talk about everything Phantoms. Unfortunately, at recording, we weren't aware of Johan Backlund's injury, but that doesn't take away from the discussion we had at all.We talked about the inseparable defensive duo, Kevin Marshall and Marc-Andre Bourdon. We talked goalies, from Backlund to Jeremy Duchesne (now a Flyer?!) to Nic Riopel. We talked forwards, from Patrick Maroon to Stefan Legein. Tim gave us updates on Mika Pyorala and Danny Syvret. Syvret is injured, by the way. We also checked on on Ryan Dingle (yeah, the throw-in from the Pronger deal) to see if he ever has a shot at making the NHL. Greeted with laughter. Finally, we discuss the future of the Phantoms in Glens Falls and when we should expect to see them in the Lehigh Valley. After Tim leaves us, we play back this week's trivia competition. William, aka CoburnsCuddleBuddy, came on to challenge Mr. Ben Rothenberg. Listen to find the results. Get the show after the jump.
