Did one bad Game 7 suddenly turn Chet Holmgren into a $240 million mistake? In this episode of On The Ball, Ric Bucher pushes back against the growing wave of criticism directed at Holmgren after the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder fell to the San Antonio Spurs in seven games. Ric explains why Holmgren's struggles were predictable, why comparing him to Victor Wembanyama misses the point, and why media calls for OKC to trade him reveal more about today's hot-take culture than Holmgren's future.Drawing on conversations with Mark Few and Larry Suggs while researching The Value of Being Coachable, Ric explains why Holmgren's track record suggests this playoff disappointment could become the foundation for future growth rather than evidence of failure.Time Stamps00:00 – Why the media reaction to Chet Holmgren feels more like bullying than analysis 02:35 – The dangerous rise of hot-take culture in NBA coverage 04:08 – Why Holmgren's disappointing Game 7 wasn't a surprise 05:05 – The difference between players who learn and players who repeat mistakes 06:20 – Why OKC's investment in Holmgren still makes sense 08:00 – Understanding Holmgren's role in the Thunder offense 10:00 – Why Sam Presti isn't panicking 10:35 – The childhood story that explains who Chet Holmgren really is 12:25 – Why trade proposals involving Holmgren are absurd 13:20 – The hidden challenge of defending an NBA championship 14:40 – Great players who suffered playoff failures before breaking through 17:05 – Why Holmgren isn't built to be a volume scorer 19:40 – The Victor Wembanyama factor nobody is discussing 21:30 – What Holmgren's future really looks like after this setback#NBA #ChetHolmgren #Thunder #OKCThunder #VictorWembanyama #Spurs #NBAPlayoffs #SamPresti #ShaiGilgeousAlexander #OnTheBall #RicBucher #UnitedWeCastSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/bucher-and-friends. Munaf Manji and Dave Essler talk betting for Tuesday. Munaf Manji and Uncle Diamond Dave Essler are back on the Straight Outta Vegas AM feed for a stacked Tuesday edition of Cash That Ticket, opening the show with a clean Monday sweep before diving into what may have been the single most active day in NFL offseason history. The guys run the numbers first: May closed at 17-16-2 and down 1.77 units, a modest dip by the pod's own high standards, but the cumulative record now sits at 96-68-2 and plus 21.77 units since launch, with three-star plays running at an 8-2 clip, and Monday's sweep only added to the momentum heading into June. From there, the conversation shifts to the Myles Garrett trade, with Cleveland sending the two-time Defensive Player of the Year and all-time single-season sack record holder to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick, and a 2029 third-round pick. Munaf walks through a full market breakdown, noting the Rams moved to 6-to-1 favorites at DraftKings, with their NFC odds shifting from plus-390 to plus-310 and their NFC West line dropping from plus-140 to plus-105. Dave offers the more measured take, calling it a fair deal for both franchises while pointing to the AFC North adjustment as the more actionable angle for bettors, since the Rams were already favorites and the division rivals who no longer face Garrett every year are the ones who quietly got better. The second trade brings AJ Brown from Philadelphia to New England in exchange for a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick, reuniting Brown with head coach Mike Vrabel after a well-documented split from the Eagles, and giving Drake Maye a legitimate downfield threat in New England. Dave, a Patriots fan, acknowledges the upgrade while tempering Super Bowl expectations given a difficult 2026 schedule. The main event of the episode is the full NBA Finals series preview ahead of Wednesday's Game 1 tip in San Antonio, where the Spurs enter as minus-205 favorites but the Knicks arrive on an 11-game winning streak with eight days of rest and a road record in the playoffs that no team has matched, six wins all by double digits. Dave goes Knicks in Game 1 at plus four and a half, highlighting the rest edge and wondering aloud whether the Spurs left their best collective effort in the OKC series, while also crediting the Towns-Wembanyama matchup as a more complicated problem for San Antonio than the Holmgren dynamic in the conference finals. Munaf takes the Knicks to win the series outright at plus-170, citing the collective offense, the defensive versatility of players like Anunoby, Bridges, and Hart, and a road dominance that has been consistent and convincing. Both hosts flag OG Anunoby at 40-to-1 and Towns at 20-to-1 for Finals MVP as market signals that the Knicks are being underpriced. The back half of the show covers the full Tuesday MLB card, with looks at Tigers-Rays, Padres-Phillies, Orioles-Red Sox, Guardians-Yankees, Blue Jays-Braves, Giants-Brewers, and Rangers-Cardinals, plus quick angles on the Dodgers-Diamondbacks, Royals-Reds, and Rockies-Angels. Best bets to close: Dave plays the Cubs team total over three and a half with Jameson Taillon facing Athletics rookie Gage Jump in just his second career start, Munaf backs the Giants-Brewers under four in the first five innings with Trevor McDonald and Kyle Harrison both lined up to pitch efficiently after Monday's 16-run blowout, and Dave adds the Royals as a live plus-105 underdog against Andrew Abbott and the Reds as a sharp bonus look. DJ & PK deabted if the Utah Jazz should be concerned about the second overall pick in the NBA Draft as the history of the pick isn't stellar.
Chris Russell breaks down the hypothetical scenario of Chet Holmgren being traded to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Anthony Davis, arguing why the move could at least be framed as logical from a roster-building standpoint. He points to Davis' well-documented lack of long-term commitment to Washington as a potential factor in any high-level negotiation, while also highlighting the broader talent disparity between the Eastern and Western Conferences - particularly at the center position, where elite depth often tilts competitive balance. Russell further evaluates Holmgren's overall trajectory, noting that outside of his most recent playoff stretch, his development profile, versatility, and defensive upside make him an intriguing long-term piece for a rebuilding team like Washington, even if the short-term optics of the deal would be highly debated.
The final hour opens with Chris Russell breaking down a hypothetical blockbuster trade scenario sending Chet Holmgren to the Wizards in exchange for Anthony Davis, exploring why the move could make sense for both sides from a roster construction and timeline perspective. The conversation then shifts to the NHL, where Chris examines the ongoing controversy surrounding Golden Knights goalie Carter Hart and the questions it raises about his situation and the broader league response. The hour wraps with insight from David Blough on Titans tight end Chig Okonkwo, as the discussion highlights his development, offensive role, and what makes him an increasingly important piece in Tennessee's passing game.

Would multiple first-round picks be too much? The Menschwarmers received an anonymous tip last year that a rising star in the NBA has Jewish heritage. We dug into it, and are the first to report that it is true: basketball star Chet Holmgren is ethnically Jewish. Holmgren, the seven-foot centre for the reigning league champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, comes from a long line of deeply involved Jewish community members in Minneapolis, by way of his mother, Sarah Harris. Her father is Ray Harris, a prominent and respected developer who passed away in 2025; his celebration of life was held at Temple Israel Minneapolis, a Reform synagogue. (Ray's father—Holmgren's great-grandfather—was Leo Harris, a Polish Jewish immigrant who arrived in 1870 and wound up founding a company that dredged the Mississippi River locks.) Ray Harris's delightfully quirky obituary mentions his daughter Sarah and grandson Chet. Ray Harris's late wife, Alta Harris—Chet's maternal grandmother—passed in 2019, and her obituary also directs donations to Temple Israel. In case there was any doubt that the whole Harris clan is Jewish, Chet's maternal uncle Dan Harris (brother of Sarah, son of Ray and Alta) also explicitly calls himself Jewish in a travel blog from 2016. So there is no doubt that Chet Holmgren is ethnically, halachically Jewish. Whether or not he considers himself a member of the tribe is another question. Currently playing in the Western Conference Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, the 24-year-old is coming off a breakout season, in which he was named an All Star, Third Team All-NBA and First Team All-Defense—all for the first time in his young career. Having helped the Thunder win the championship title last year, Holmgren has found himself under an enormous spotlight fairly quickly. Being openly Jewish, or even discussing his Jewish heritage, could invite hateful backlash. Holmgren got a taste of this last summer when a video emerged online of him working out at the gym of Shalhevet High School, an Orthodox Jewish school in Los Angeles, where many NBA stars like to practice, due to its high security and premium hardwood courts. (Jayson Tatum, Joel Embiid and James Harden have all worked out there.) In the video, Holmgren is seen shooting hoops with some Israeli flags in the background, leading to an onslaught of online insults, assumptions about his political leanings, and the epithet "Chetanyahu". The CJN reached out to the Oklahoma City Thunder multiple times, but never received a response. Given's Holmgren's immense success, the Menschwarmers felt it appropriate to celebrate Holmgren's heritage, and bring some Jewish joy to fellow Jewish NBA fans watching OKC's possible road to a repeat championship. In this episode, they break down what they learned about his family tree, discuss why it's understandable that he prefers to avoid the subject—and express hope that he will embrace it publicly. If the Spurs beat OKC and play New York in the Finals, Bruce feels like the Knicks will use Karl Anthony-Towns to draw Victor Wembanyama away from the hoop on defense which could allow New York to operate successfully closer to the hoop. 14:48 ... Bruce marvels at how Wemby guards the entire opposing team and how God must be a Spurs fan with Wemby succeeding Tim Duncan and David Robinson as the latest generational big man in San Antonio. 16:37 ... World B reacts to the Spurs big win in game 4 with Wemby leading the way once again. 18:09 ... Bruce points out how Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has struggled offensively against the Spurs and with two key teammates like Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell battling health issues, the Spurs will continue to "throw the kitchen sink" at SGA if they miss more action. The result will be to wear SGA down and that will mean big trouble for OKC. Ross adds some perspective to the OKC offensive struggles. 20:11 ... World B explains how the return of De'Aaron Fox has been really important as far as the offense running smoothly. Ross feels like game 5 is a "must win" game for the Thunder. 22:40 ... Bruce points out that all the NBA awards have been announced except for Coach of the Year and he hopes his preseason prediction of Mitch Johnson winning the award might come true with a trophy presentation prior to game 6 in San Antonio. 24:09 ... The All-NBA Teams were announced over the weekend and the crew does a lightning round commenting on all the members of the first team. Cade Cunningham, SGA, Nikola Jokic, Wemby, and Luka Doncic make up the first team. Bruce has a big issue with one of the first teamers. 29:31 ... The All NBA Second team consists of Jaylen Brown, Jalen Brunson, Donovan Mitchell, Kevin Durant, and Kawhi Leonard. The guys wondered if aging Kawhi Leonard can have another All-NBA season at age 34 after this season's great performance. 36:53 ... The All-NBA third team consists of Tyrese Maxey, Jalen Johnson, Jamal Murray, Chet Holmgren, and Jalen Duren. Duren making the third team could really affect his contract negotiations with the Pistons due to the honor making him eligible for a Super Max contract worth $48 million more than he would have qualified for had he not been honored as an All-NBA performer. 45:16 ... We examine the All Defensive teams for the season. The first teamers are Wemby, Holmgren, Ausar Thompson, Derrick White, and Rudy Gobert. Bruce has a summer assigmnent for Thompson. 49:29 ... The second teamers are Scottie Barnes, Cason Wallace, Bam Adebayo, OG Anunoby, and Dyson Daniels. 52:39 ... Final Thoughts: Bruce on how Wemby's main "superpower" cannot be measured by analytics. World B on how the Orlando Magic's search for a new coach is still wide open with many potential great candidates in the mix. Ross closes with his thoughts on two former NBA players facing off in an MMA match in Las Vegas over the weekend. 56:56 ... Ross wraps it up and says goodbye. In this episode of The Timeout with Dwyane Wade, Dwyane and Bob welcome Udonis Haslem to break down the playoffs. UD comes in with two stories that say everything about his championship mindset, playing through a broken finger in 2012 and snatching Jeremy Lin’s shoe out of Dwyane’s hand mid-game because he was “seeing red.” On the East, they focus on how Cleveland will try to wear down Jalen Brunson, the paint battle between Mobley, Allen, KAT, and Mitchell Robinson, and give Donovan Mitchell his flowers for bouncing back in Game 7. Out West, Dwyane says Wembanyama has no weaknesses on either end while UD breaks down why OKC’s trio of Holmgren, Jaylin Williams, and Hartenstein are built to handle him. They also debate Anthony Edwards walking off with eight minutes left and praise SGA’s back to back MVPs. Music Credit: Khari Mateen.
