And American Legion honors veterans Bonner and Johnson Plus, Brian Giffin with have a Cobb Sports Report powered by Powers Electrical Solutions   All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage to listen and subcribe! Commercial : CUofGA   STORY 1 Hit n run   Kristopher Johnson, a Kennesaw man, turned himself in to Cobb police after a hit-and-run incident in Mableton that killed a 60-year-old pedestrian, Artie Dumas. Johnson is charged with hit and run. The incident occurred at Floyd Road and Maran Lane, adjacent to the Mable House Arts Center. Preliminary investigations indicate that the pedestrian was crossing Floyd Road outside the marked crosswalk when a Hyundai Elantra, allegedly driven by Johnson, struck him. Witnesses reported that Johnson briefly stopped before fleeing the scene, and Dumas was pronounced dead at the scene. Johnson posted a $25,000 bond and was released. The police investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact Cobb police......read more about this story at mdjonline.com. ......................……... read more about this at mdjonline.com   Story 2: books   Cobb County officials plan to establish a book club for incarcerated youth in the Cobb Youth Detention Center, in partnership with the Cobb County Public Library System and the Department of Juvenile Justice. The initiative is part of the American Library Association's Great Stories Club, designed for underserved teens. The club discussions will explore themes of race, equity, identity, and history through selected titles such as "Piecing Me Together," "I Am Alfonso Jones," "The Poet X," and "Anger is a Gift." The library will receive a programming stipend and copies of the books for the participants. The program aims to encourage empathy and engage youth in meaningful discussions about their lives and the world around them.   Story 3: honors   American Legion Post 296 held a dedication ceremony to honor Air Force veterans Jesse Bonner and Lucius Johnson. A plaque commemorating their service to the post and their country was installed at the entrance doors to the blue room, a designated space for post meetings and ceremonies. Both veterans played key roles in expanding Post 296, leasing a new building, and financing its construction. Jesse Bonner, a retired chief master sergeant, and Lucius Johnson, who passed away before the event, were recognized for their contributions. The ceremony was attended by community leaders and former government officials, expressing gratitude for the veterans' impact on the community.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Despite efforts to raise starting pay and implement a step-and-grade pay plan, there remain 90 to 105 openings among the budgeted 716 full-time sworn officers. VanHoozer has engaged in community outreach, explaining his policing philosophy, and gathering feedback from civic groups and officers. The department has also focused on improving technology, including the use of a real-time crime center to enhance crime-solving capabilities and precision policing. The chief is also working on initiatives like the Community Assistance Response Team (CART), a civilian program to respond to low-level calls and free up sworn officers for serious crimes. Additionally, efforts are being made to increase community engagement, particularly with high school students and communities experiencing higher levels of crime. The ultimate goal is to create a safer community and build trust between the police and the public.   STORY 5: cabin   Cobb Landmarks arranged for a log cabin restorer, Vic Hood, to evaluate the Power-Jackson Cabin in east Cobb. The purpose was to assess if the cabin could be preserved and to determine the scope of restoration work needed. The cabin is a rare example of a "rived log house," where logs are split, creating a rounded exterior and a smooth interior surface. The cabin's preservation was in question as a developer had proposed an 18-home development on the site, but the application was withdrawn in May. Cobb Landmarks awaits Hood's report on the cabin's potential restoration.   Story 6: rugby   Atlanta's professional rugby team, Rugby ATL, will be relocating as it has been acquired by a new ownership group. The specific location of the team's new base has not been disclosed yet. The team was originally founded in 2018 by Marcus Calloway and played its games at Lupo Family Field at Life University in Marietta. After suffering flooding damage, the team's home venue was moved to Silverbacks Park in Atlanta. Rugby ATL had a successful run, including two consecutive playoff berths and winning the Eastern Conference Championship in 2021. The new ownership group's decision to relocate the team marks the end of its time in Atlanta, but the league CEO didn't rule out a potential MLR return to the city in the future.   We'll be back in a moment   Break: Drake- Ingles 4- Powers   Story 7: SPORTS   (Piece will have intro-outtro pieces built in)   *****Sports Report*****   We're back with final thoughts after this     Break: JRM - Henssler 60 Signoff- Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Marietta Daily Journal podcast. Playoff fever in the NBA & NHL continues to rise as baseball, the NFL schedule and the Preakness will follow as another jam packed podcast has arrived. On deck: (3:04) We're down to a familiar final four in the NBA as the conference finals are set. Jayson Tatum & the Celtics were able to overcome a 3-2 series deficit as they defeated the Sixers to move on and play the Miami Heat for the third time in four years for an Eastern Conference Championship. The Nuggets and Lakers advance to the Western Conference Finals which sets the stage as these four teams were also the last ones standing the year of the bubble in 2020. I'll recap the recent events for these said teams, as well as, the aftermath for the Sixers (including another James Harden meltdown), Knicks, Suns (Coach Monty Williams got a raw deal as he was fired) and Warriors (the end of a dynasty? Was this really a dynasty?) I'll preview both series with predictions. I'll talk about Ja Morant's indefensible behavior as another video surfaces of him holding a gun on a social media feed which drew a team suspension. And the NBA Draft Lottery which'll take place tomorrow night to see who will have the #1 overall pick with potential generational player, Victor Wembanyama on the horizon. (44:19) As for the NHL, the conference finals won't have the same sex appeal that the NBA has. We're still awaiting the winner of an upstart Seattle Kraken team vs. Dallas Stars as they have a Game 7 to play tonight. Whomever comes out victorious there will face the Vegas Golden Knights in the West. In the East, you have division rivals squaring off, but it's Carolina vs. Florida. Not the sexiest matchup, to say the least. Will this generate any interest to the casual sports fan? (51:43) MLB had a very interesting weekend as you had comebacks (Yankees rally from 6-0 deficit to beat the Rays on Saturday) a near miss comeback (Aaron Judge missed a game tying HR by thismuch) a couple of surprising sweeps (Blue Jays over Braves, Cardinals over Red Sox) and benches emptying in Colorado between the Phillies-Rockies. (58:10) I share my displeasure on a few dates of the upcoming 2023 NFL schedule. THREE Monday night doubleheaders? You know I'll go off on this, the Thanksgiving & Christmas Day slates, opening night in KC and why the Packers are on primetime aplenty? (1:06:40) In a bit of a surprise, Kentucky Derby winner Mage will run in the Preakness this coming Saturday. Is it possible that this horse is primed for a Triple Crown run? We have a great show for you this week! Barry Trotz, a Stanley Cup champion and two-time Jack Adams award winner who is third on the NHL's all time wins list with 914, joins us for episode 189. You're going to need a notepad for this one. While most should be familiar with his long list of accomplishments, what truly stands out about Trotz is that he is regarded as one of the true gentlemen in our sport. Trotz grew up in Dauphin, Manitoba, and began his coaching journey as the head coach of the local junior team, the Dauphin Kings, when he was just 23-years-old. By 25, he was the head coach of his alma mater, the University of Manitoba. From there, Trotz began scouting for the Washington Capitals and was eventually named an assistant coach with the Baltimore Skipjacks, Washington's then AHL affiliate, a position he held for half a season before being promoted as the team's head coach. Trotz continued to lead Washington's farm team for five more seasons, which included a relocation to Portland, Maine. Then in 1997, David Poile, then General Manager of the Capitals, was named GM of the expansion Nashville Predators and offered Trotz the chance to be an NHL head coach. Fifteen years later, he was the longest active tenured coach in the NHL. Following his time Nashville, Trotz returned to Washington to lead the Capitals to their first Stanley Cup Championship in 2018. The next season, he joined the NY Islanders and guided them on back-to-back Cinderella runs to the Eastern Conference Championship, losing the Tampa Bay Lightning on both occasions. In this episode, we discuss his expansion season with the Predators, leaning into getting uncomfortable, and why you should always take the party to the streets following a Stanley Cup Championship.

You are going to have to earn everything here. All the other schools were telling me you can start right away.”    4:05 - 5:42 Drew’s experiences in being a high level recruit and playing in Sonny Vaccaro’s famed ABCD Camp.   5:46 - 7:02 How did Drew get into basketball and how much of an influence was his dad growing up? Diego Maradona was an iconic, enigmatic and tragic figure all of which is captured in the documentary, "Diego Maradona." Academy Award winning director Asif Kapadia tells Pro Soccer USA's Glenn Crooks that he discovered 500 hours of archived footage which provides the essence of the man best known for his slalom through England in the quarterfinals of the 1986 World Cup and the "Hand of God" goal in the same match. “I can tell you that having done so much research on Diego Maradona I’ve seen him do it three or four times," Kapadia said. Half the time he gets away with it, half the time he gets caught.” Kapadia explains that his film spends considerable time on the incredible seven years Maradona played for Napoli. “The most expensive player in the world goes to one of the poorest cities in Europe and takes a team that’s never won anything before, was about to be relegated and within three years wins a championship. That is the less well known part of his story.” Also in this episode, the post match thoughts of coach Dome Torrent, goalkeeper Sean Johnson and defender Sebastian Ibeagha after New York City FC clinched their first Eastern Conference Championship. City lost their match at New England but then got a little help from their friends in Columbus.

The Stanley Cup Final is almost here, Nashville is heading there for the first time and the Penguins appear to be almost ready to defend their Cup. Ryan, Geeta and Black Ace Cole join you this week to discuss the ups and downs of the Eastern Conference Championship. From Guy Boucher's unconventional tactics pulling his goalies, Marc-Andre Fleury losing his net to Matt Murray... again and quite possibly for a final time as the expansion draft looms. They discuss the dull trap played by the Ottawa Senators and how affective it has been through two and a half rounds of the playoffs... but then the Penguins appeared to have awoken. They also discuss throwing items on the ice. From octopi, to catfish, mallards and BC Salmons, there's a tradition of playoff tomfoolery. They also discuss the uproar caused by Vancouver bar 'The Pint' offering free wings to people in Edmonton Oilers jerseys during their playoff run earlier this month. They're also discussing how quiet it is on the Canucks from. With the rookies in town training with Canucks coaches and a month until we learn who's been exposed in the Vegas expansion draft, it is a dull time for Canuck fans. But they discuss the positives of the Larscheiders, the Vancouver Canucks supporters section that debuted earlier in the season at Rogers Arena and the positives they bring to the fanbase during a darker time. Finally, they discuss Ryan Getzlaf's $10,000 fine for use of a homophobic slur to an NHL referee. They discuss the magnitude of the word and what the penalty means for the league going forward. Big news in the Twin Cities. Ahead of MLS and Minnesota United’s major announcement on Friday(Live stream at MLSsoccer.com, 7 pm ET), the guys bring in FiftyFiveOne’s Wes Burdine to give the lowdown on soccer in Minneapolis-St. Paul, the ethos of the club and its fans and the stadium designs that have the Dark Cloud’s hyped for the future. In the second segment, it’s back to the business at hand. The MLS Cup Playoff races are in full swing, and there are plenty of marquee matchups this weekend that could push teams above or below the red line. With the Galaxy headed to the Bronx, who’s having the better season: Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard? With the Sounders and Nicolas Lodeiro set to host the Timbers, which side will walk away with their heads held high in what amounts to a six-pointer? Plus, Atlantic Cup action and a Toronto-Philly matchup that could be a preview of the Eastern Conference Championship.  The mailbag begins with some USMNT news in Europe, then the guys ponder questions about Kei Kamara’s role in Crew SC’s tough season and Jozy Altidore’s resurgence as he comes back from injury.

It's the best Thanksgiving weekend an MLS fan could ever want: a Conference Championship second leg on Saturday and another on Sunday to cap off the long holiday weekend. We get you set for both of them starting with the Seattle Sounders vs. LA Galaxy saga in the West which comes to a close on Sunday night. According to Mr. Sounder, Zach Scott, it's the biggest match in club history.    And while the Western series still rests on a knife's edge, the Eastern Conference Championship is decidedly tilted toward the New England Revolution, who are at home with two away goals to defend vs. New York Red Bulls. Revs right back Andrew Farrell feels like this is his team's big chance to finally get their due on the national stage.   Also, what Landon Donovan will we witness in what may be his last game ever? Who should the Red Bulls start in place of Bradley Wright-Phillips: Saer Sene or Tim Cahill? And is Austin the new Columbus? Lastly, if you listen to ExtraTime Radio in your car, one listener shares a cautionary tale in the mailbag.

The Cup Finals are here, and while we'll likely be stepping up the radio game during the next two weeks or so, we're here with our typical Wednesday show this week. On the show this week, Ben, Geoff and I spend a few minutes on the celebration of an Eastern Conference Championship, but much like the team itself, we quickly turn the page to the Chicago Blackhawks. What are their strengths? Their weaknesses? What are the big matchups we should keep an eye on? Do the Flyers stand a chance? We'll tell you right now that, yes, we make our predictions for the Final on this week's show, and yes, Geoff does pick against the Flyers again. It's working. But for Ben and myself, it's a pretty insane question. It's not just making a prediction. It's asking the question "will the Flyers win the Stanley Cup? Absolutely wild.
