After the smoke clears from some much needed post-slaughter fumigation, Dave and Jeff finally lumber their way to the end of the epic. At last we get a proper reunion between husband and wife in which Penelope wins the battle of wits. The occasion? Odysseus gets artichoked up when Penelope treats their bed like an IKEA futon. Now, roll the credits, right? WRONG. There's a whole other book to go! We see the suitors take the slip-n-slide down to Hades where Agamemnon gives them the raspberry. Back on Ithaca, Odysseus goes into "metis mode" and decides to test his aged dad with yet another false identity! But why? Does Odysseus even know who he himself is anymore? And be sure to stick around for the surprise, dea ex machina ending.

In this first of countless (?) episodes on the Odyssey, Jeff and Dave wash ashore on the opening books, Castaway style. Here we find Odysseus’ wife and son, Penelope and Telemachus, besieged in their home on Ithaca by greedy, gluttonous, mindless suitors, and with no idea when Odysseus is ever coming home. As with the Iliad, we consider the first word of the poem — ἄνδρα (andra, man) — and investigate how this might be a guidestone for understanding the epic’s deeper themes. Other key questions: will Telemachus rise to the occasion? How do the meanings of names (glint-eyed Athena) give us insight into character? And what’s Lazy Steve doing in this neck of the woods? Don’t miss the concluding yogurt.

Let's get realpolitik. Hear clips from Jordan Peterson and some other guy!

In Homer's Odyssey, Odysseus, struggling to get home from Calypso's island, is shipwrecked. Naked, destitute, looking for all the world like a vagabond, he is nonetheless welcomed by Alkinoos, king of the Phaiakians. Alkinoos and his people treat him like a king, take his story to heart, and transport him to his home Ithaka with a vast trove of gifts. That is, they treated him with hospitality. These days we think of hospitality in much less grandiose terms. There's hospitality hour after church: donuts, coffee, and small talk. We might offer hospitality as a meal or a night or two in our spare bedroom, but only for those we know—or relatives of those we know. For everyone else, there's "the hospitality industry" to provide rooms, beds, and meals. Thus Odysseus' adventures and misadventures provide a whole new perspective on how we treat guests, even those who are strangers to us. Prof. Adam Cooper is new to Wyoming Catholic College this year and is in the midst of teaching The Odyssey to our freshmen, drawing their attention to this major theme in the poem: hospitality.

Penelope is one of the most compelling characters from ancient Greek mythology. And yet her intelligence and agency in Homer's Odyssey is seldom appreciated. Towards the end of the epic, Penelope comes face-to-face with Odysseus, who has finally returned home disguised as a beggar. After they exchange a few stories (with Odysseus still maintaining his disguise), Penelope sets in motion a chain of events that seals the fate of all the major characters in the story. Since antiquity people have debated whether Penelope realizes who this beggar is or not. Obviously, how you come down on that question is going to profoundly affect how you see her as a character. Is she naive and passive or is she discerning and cunning? Homeric scholar Olga Levaniouk has a unique take on this question and other aspects of Penelope's role. She joins us to illuminate the complexities of Penelope's character and mythological background. Levaniouk is Professor of Classics at the University of Washington in Seattle, and author of the book Eve of the Festival: Making Myth in Odyssey 19. ------------------ Support Ancient Greece Declassified on Patreon: patreon.com/greecepodcast Or make a one-time donation: paypal.me/greecepodcast ------------------ Scholarly works mentioned during the conversation: Elizabeth Barber, Prehistoric Textiles: The Development of Cloth in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages with Special Reference to the Aegean, Princeton University Press, 1991. Discuss on Reddit ➤ Support the Show ➤ With September just around the corner, it seems like the best time to tackle Schmidt and Jones’ ‘The Fantasticks.’ Currently the longest running musical in the world with a staggering 17,000+ performances, ‘The Fantasticks’ has been a bit of an enigma in the musical theatre world in more ways than one. The boys try and pull apart why it lasted so long, discuss the problems that come with musicals running for a long time, and share some personal stories when reflecting on the themes of youth and love in the show. The Fantasticks (New Off-Broadway Recording) Amazon / iTunes / Spotify SHOW NOTES If you’re as fascinated as us about why The Fantasticks lasted as long as it did then check out this documentary. What do you think about the movie adaptation of The Fantasticks? Does it work? Or can this show only exist on a small Off-Broadway stage? Here are some great interviews from the revival of the Off-Broadway production, from backstage and from the cast recording! Are you as befuzzled as us as to why Aaron Carter appeared in this? Here he is appealing to his pop fans… If you’re into the obscure/creepy/weird/all of the above, then The League of Gentlemen will be right up your alley. Fantastic one? Fantastic two? Fantastic three? Fantastic 4: The Musical! The Bible of the beat generation in many ways is ‘On the Road’ by Jack Kerouac and the Homer's Odyssey is ‘Howl’ by Allen Ginsberg However, Jimi’s favourite piece by Kerouac is ‘Lonesome Traveler’ and one of his favourite things in existence is this painting inspired by it. Be better than Jimi and Tommy and learn all about the basics of commedia dell’arte from this National Theatre documentary. A Fierce Quiz Question The Tony winning star from this musical caused Jeff Bowen to say the word fierce for the first AND second time. What show?
