The final major of the year is over and the champions are the same as in January: Aryna Sabalenka stakes her claim as hardcourt queen while Jannik Sinner dominates mere days after being cleared in an anti-doping case. We recap some of our highlights from week two, which had a ton of potential but didn't deliver many (any?) classics. We dig into why disliking billionaires is actually totally fine; conflicts of interest and their sometimes humorous results; online mean girl/mean boy behavior from some famous commentators; and more observations from the site. We finish up with a look at commentator Nick Kyrgios and the complacency that led broadcasters, journalists, and commentators to excuse his misogyny; plus the ongoing lawsuit over Ben Rothenberg's reporting on the Zverev abuse allegations. 0:35 Not the most brilliant three weeks of tennis in history but OK! 3:00 The women's final was fun! Aryna Sabalenka bookends her year with hardcourt Slams 7:35 Billionaires, they're just like us! 14:45 Notable week two matches: Navarro d. Badosa; Zheng d. Vekic; Aryna evolving into the most consistent Slam player on tour 19:00 Rennae cooks coach/commentator Brad Gilbert on air, and why that's totally fine 26:55 An unseasoned final 30:50 The American narrative + Frances Tiafoe getting so close again 44:50 Penko a first-time Slam doubles winner; Taylor/Katka, Mladenovic/Zhang, D. Young 52:10 “Little grim reapers” and a few more observations from the grounds 63:40 ESPN commentators discover player name pronunciations and immediately get mean about it 71:10 Nick Kyrgios, misogyny, and the insider hypocrisy that protects him 79:45 Ben Rothenberg appeals a lawsuit from Alexander Zverev + its broader implications for journalism

In July 2021, Naomi Osaka—world number 1 women's tennis player—lit the Olympic Cauldron at the Tokyo Olympic Games. The half-Japanese, half-American, Black athlete was a symbol of a more complicated, more multiethnic Japan—and of the global nature of high-level sports. Osaka is now about to start her comeback, after taking some time off following the birth of her child. She's not just an athlete: She's a media entrepreneur, venture investor, and mental health advocate—with that latter label coming with difficult conversations about the wellbeing of high-performance athletes, and their obligations to the media. Just in time for her comeback tour, tennis writer Ben Rothenberg is here with a new biography of the tennis star: Naomi Osaka: Her Journey to Finding Her Power and Her Voice (Dutton, 2024). Ben Rothenberg is a sportswriter from Washington, D.C. who has covered Naomi Osaka around the world since she emerged onto the WTA Tour in 2014, both in print for The New York Times—for which he covered tennis from 2011-2022—and on his podcast, No Challenges Remaining. His longform writing has been published in outlets including Slate and Racquet. On January 16th Ben Rothenberg and I hosted a full house at the best coffee shop in Melbourne for a live podcast/book signing. The Osaka book was available for purchase and Ben signed books, and Naomi's agent Stu Duguid joined us . We talked in length about the Osaka comeback, the book, and then we hit the hot button topics of the day including gambling in tennis and the Zverev situation. It was an awesome Australian Open kickoff. The Craig Shapiro Tennis Podcast is Powered By DiadoraRecorded 1.16 Released 1.19 Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Ben Rothenberg is one of the most prolific and influential tennis journalists of the last several decades. He covered tennis for the New York Times for over 10 years, has contributed to The Racquet, and has been featured on BBC, CNN, and many other major news networks.I wanted to have Ben on to talk doubles and discuss his new book, Naomi Osaka: Her Journey to Finding Her Power & Her Voice. I recently listened to Ben on Craig Shapiro's podcast where he said he thinks “doubles is in a position that's not sustainable.”In this conversation, we discuss:The problems facing the doubles tour including the lack of star power, poor marketing, small fan bases at many tournaments, and more. What the ATP & WTA might do to help doubles. What doubles players need to do to grow their fan base and help the sport. Why the Bryan Brothers were so successful in “marketing” themselves and doubles.Ben also has lots of great stories that he shares with me. I'd encourage tennis fans, anyone involved in professional tennis, and especially ATP and WTA doubles players to listen to this episode. Whether you agree with Ben or not, he has opinions worth listening to as someone who understands our sport so well.In my opinion, many of the ideas should be taken into consideration by both the tours and the players, particularly as the rumors around Saudi Arabia enter the scene.Follow Ben: Twitter | InstagramBen's new book, releasing January 9, 2024: Naomi Osaka: Her Journey to Finding Her Power and Her VoiceBen hosts the No Challenges Remaining PodcastFull shownotes for this episode here: Ben Rothenberg Interview-----**Doubles Strategy Courses** These video courses will help you play smarter doubles and make winning easier.25 Winning Doubles Tactics Video Course: https://the-tennis-tribe.teachable.com/p/25-winning-doubles-tacticsLeague Doubles Training Masterclass Video Course: https://the-tennis-tribe.teachable.com/p/league-doubles-training**Doubles Ebooks** These guides offer proven advice to improve your doubles strategy.25 Winning Doubles Tactics: https://www.thetennistribe.com/25-winning-doubles-tactics/Return Strategy for Doubles: https://www.thetennistribe.com/return-strategy-for-doubles-ebook/Serve Strategy for Doubles: https://www.thetennistribe.com/serve-strategy-for-doubles-ebook/Net Play Strategy for Doubles: https://www.thetennistribe.com/net-play-strategy-for-doubles-ebook/

Contestants: Meredith MacVittie, Ben Rothenberg, Nikhil SonejaFrom the semi-logical to the semiological, this episode examines the JAMES BOND phenomenon at all angles, turning a spyglass on the world's most famous spy. As we celebrate the rich legacy of the Bond franchise while also reflecting on its many problematic aspects, we additionally draw connections to geography, politics, probability theory, radical feminism, horse racing, the Olympics, Willy Wonka, Orson Welles, and of course gambling and music. Come to witness Ben's quest to become Recreational Thinking's first ever 3-time loser; stay for an abrupt downer ending that would be right at home in On Her Majesty's Secret Service or No Time to Die.As always, if you like what you hear, consider donating via PayPal or Patreon and remember to leave a review and/or rating on iTunes!
