How far is too far? Parents and youth sports coaches ask this question all the time. Can pushing your kid tot he max make them a better athlete? Patrick O'Sullivan was one of the best hockey players in the country growing up. On the outside he was a talented scorer who had the potential to make it to the NHL. Inside it was a far different story. O'Sullivan endured years of physical and mental abuse, some might even call it torture, at the hands of his very own father. How does this happen? How does this end? Most importantly how much of this is going on without anyone even knowing? O'Sullivan needed security to protect him from his father at the 2003 NHL entry draft. Even though he had top ten ability, O'Sullivan fell to the 2nd round before being selected by the Nashville Predators. This came on the heels of O'Sullivan finally fighting back after his dad literally pulled him off a team bus following a game in the Ontario Hockey League. A fight that would land O'Sullivan's dad in jail. Meanwhile O'Sullivan made it to the NHL suiting up with multiple teams. But how good could he have been and how much of his career was stolen away because of a terrifying upbringing? O'Sullivan has been out of hiding for several years now. He wrote a book, has done countless speaking engagements, and told his story. Listen to it from O'Sullivan himself, hear it from him as he takes us through his childhood and a hockey career that included a World Junior Championship, an AHL rookie of the year, and an impressive OHL career. The conversation he has with Cam and Strick will leave you both riveted and heartbroken. He also touches on pst friendships with Dan Carcillo and what he thinks of former Vancouver Canuck Alex Burrows.
Dan Carcillo has played 9 years in the NHL, playing for the Chicago Blackhawks and La Kings during his career. He played the role of an enforcer on the ice and has had over 100 fights in the game and won 2 Stanley Cups. Dan, along with other rookies, was physically, sexually and emotionally abused at 17 years old by veterans as a young athlete coming through the ranks, because of ‘hockey culture' and the unwritten understanding of ‘what goes on in the room stays in the room'. Dan has also had 7 diagnosed concussions… He had a friend called Steve Montador who passed away from CTE (a disease which is triggered by repeated brain trauma). From seeing this happen and struggling with his own concussion, Dan now has a new purpose in shedding light on treatments he has experimented with and how concussions should be handled better in sport. Psilocybin and which is the active ingredient in magic mushrooms are now in breakthrough stages of research to help treat severe depression and anxiety. Dan is at the front of a new way of thinking - that psilocybin and medicinal mushrooms can help heal concussion and improve brain health. The interview covers Dan's career in hockey from his time in junior to his 11 seasons in the NHL. We also discussed his injuries he sustained in his career and how that has helped to shape his work since retiring from the NHL and so much more.

In the 74th installment of the DeanBlundell.com Podcast Dean and Daren are in the house, literally…in Deans house. Jimmy the Prince joins the boys as well. How lucky are we? The boys compare the weird places they have hair. Jimmy has a very hairy butthole and wants hair plugs. We discuss Deans butthole too. If you haven't stopped listening yet, Jimmy brings up some very good points about the Toronto Maple Leafs and their current situation…seriously Daren didn't shit on him. Who is more likely to be a Maple Leaf at this time next year? Patrick Marleau or William Nylander? Vladimir Guerrero Jr. made his first appearance as a Blue Jay over the weekend, it was a national event. The worst it over!! The Toronto Raptors handled the 76ers, Kawhi Leonard played flawlessly. Dean is all in on the Raptors. The Raptors are really good. We need to remember how far we have come. Dean is convinced Drake got his jacket from his neighbor who is a seniors model for Asian clothing. Dean has some question about Game of Thrones. Jimmy tries his best to break it down. Daren gives us his thought on Deans interview with Dan Carcillo. Enjoy! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Welcome to episode #73 of the DeanBlundell.com Podcast. We switch gears a bit and decide to shelf the jokes for today and discuss something very serious. Long-story short, Dean called Brian Burke a turd, Dan Carcillo retweeted it and followed Dean. Dean loves Dans' story, Dan is now a guest on the show today. Funny how life works. Recently, more and more players are joining the fight in hockey. However, these fights aren't against other players, but rather, against the NHL itself. Daniel Carcillo is one of many players who is now suing the NHL for withholding information about traumatic brain injuries. Dan who is no stranger to head injuries was heavily affected by the death of friend Steve Montador. Since his retirement, Dan has dedicated his life to studying the effects of head trauma and educating the masses. Dan hopes his message is heard by our youth and parents when deciding whether or not to put their kids into hockey. The boys discuss Steve Montador, chapter 5, self-medication, his career, mental illness, the NHL, seeking treatment and recovery. Dan gets into "return to play protocol" and doctors with strong relationships to teams serving the sport over the well being of the player they are diagnosing. Enjoy this very controversial, candid and educational conversation with Dan Carcillo. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On this week's second edition of Stanley Cup Playoffs Chiclets, the boys talk about Thursday's Game 4 of Pens/Caps, Tom Wilson and his effect on the series, the highly entertaining San Jose/Vegas series, who should be fired in Columbus for letting Wild Bill Karlsson go, the Bruins bad start in Game 3 killing them, getting booed by an entire arena (home and away), and more. The guys also provide "live" updates on Nashville's big Game 4 win as well as discuss that series. Whits also addresses the sound issues and sound issue complaints, RA and Biz bitch about the horribly-named 'Like' feature on Twitter, and Biz gives his take on being called a "phony" by Dan Carcillo then dunking on him with receipts. Tune in.

Tally and Lexi drink drinks and talk about 24/7 and boys. Topics from Episode 003, in no particular order: – #HotterThanPatrickSharp – Pie Chart of Hockey Affections (of course Lexi’s pie chart doesn’t equal 100%, she’s bad at math) – Dan Carcillo plays chess? - Ginger Marshmallow Men – Tally talks about her “love” for the […]
Nine games into the season! We recap the game versus the Dallas Stars and break down what’s working and what’s still stuck in a cesspool about the Kings’ play. Jonathan Quick is a trendsetter among NHL goalies, Kings centers continue to be denied goals, and Dan Carcillo has been a pleasant surprise despite looking like the Ottawa Senators mascot. Plus, how badly do we want to see a Brown-Richards-Williams line someday? More than Keaton Ellerby wants to crack the lineup.
The Breakout! is back with another packed episode of hockey talk. Topics on this week's show include the precarious state of the Atlanta Thrashers and what it means for the league and the fans, the Conference Finals so far, the curious case of Dan Carcillo's suspension, and the tragic death of Derek Boogaard. On this week's edition of Broad Street Hockey Radio, we jump in right off the bat and talk about Dan Carcillo's beatdown of Marian Gaborik last week. Should Gaborik have dropped the gloves with Carcillo? Should a teammate have stepped in? Was there a lack of honor in it, as John Tortorella said there was? We then bring in Frank D from Pensburgh and fromtherink.com to talk all things Pittsburgh Penguins, mostly surrounding the game from this past weekend. He talks about goalie Brent Johnson. Is he really a decent goalie or did the Flyers just not get the job done against him on Sunday? What about the fledgling Pens power play? Are the Flyers even considered a threat to the Penguins anymore?Moving on, we peer into the future and try to figure out what the Flyers may do at the trade deadline. Paul Holmgren has said he's looking for a defenseman, so who's available? Should the Flyers even do anything? Is trading for prospects instead of roster players a smarter idea? And what about this offseason? What's the plan there?Much shorter show this week, but you'll have to deal. Thanks for listening as always, of course.
