Topics that keeps bubbling up in conversations industry wide is burnout. Exhaustion. Dealing with the daily and unrelenting chaos. These feelings are coming from the stresses caused by the constant price increases, subscription increases, the lost art of customer service and yes, the overall chaos caused by a litany of factors and you know what I'm talking about. Sick of thinking about it. I want to feel like I did back in 2022. That was a good year. The pandemic was behind us and blue skies ahead. So, your tired. Yeah, me too. The thing that recharges my batteries? The interpersonal conversations that you hear on the show. I started Convo By Design to tell the stories behind design. To showcase the very design that makes me happy. It's that feeling I used to get when a new issue of Metropolitan Home arrived in the mail. It would be sitting there in the mailbox. I would spend a minute just looking at the cover, through the poly bag. I would spend a minute trying to imagine what will be in there. Then I would save it. Force the anticipation to build. Then put it down for a while and come back when I had a full hour or more to really dig in, read the Editors Letter, Pub Note, the Masthead, scour the ads. Did you know the advertising is really the best way to determine the forthcoming trends? The marketing, not the editorial is where you learn about future-thought. But the editorial is what has been happening for the past 3 months to 2-years while the projects were in process. I don't think I have ever spoken with you about how I hope you use Convo By Design. This show is offered as both product and service. My hope is that you will take me with you on your walks, runs, trips to discover at local design centers or at the airport as you are on your way to the next big event. I tell you this in support of the conversation you are about to hear with Lauren Reyes Lim, principal and founder of LVR Studios. Lauren's work, and that of her firm is both throwback and futuristic in thought and delivery. Pattern, color, texture, styling and presentation. That is very much how this chat goes as well. In addition to Friday being International Women's Day, March is Women's History Month, and that seemed the perfect time to have this series I've been concocting in my brain for a while called Women in Power. I am so proud and happy to share my conversations with you! Also, at the end of each episode in this series, I'll be sharing three books by three female writers whose collections I love, so stick around after the interview for that. Our first guest in the Women in Power series is a legend in the magazine space: Alexandra Shulman, who was editor-in-chief of British Vogue for 25 years. A full quarter century! She is the longest-serving editor in the position and took the helm in 1992; she has become one of the U.K.'s most respected voices in fashion since. Her 25 years at the top of the masthead included many iconic issues of the magazine, like the December 1999 “Millennium Issue,” which became the highest-selling issue of Vogue. You'll hear me speak about this with her, but I always respected Alexandra's stance that the magazine never publish pieces on diets or cosmetic surgery, as she didn't want to tell women a specific way they should look. While still editor in-chief, she published a novel, Can We Still Be Friends?, in 2012, and in 2016, highlighting British Vogue's centenary year, she published the book Inside Vogue: My Diary of Vogue's 100th Year. In January 2017, nearing the quarter-century mark in her role, it was announced that she would leave her role that June, and she was succeeded as editor-in-chief by Edward Enninful. Since then, she has published a memoir I loved called Clothes And Other Things That Matter, which came out in 2021. Today we talk about what she's up to these days (and it's a lot!), what she's reading, and, of course, about her time at Vogue. By Alexandra Shulman: Can We Still Be Friends? Episode 192 contains the Digital Marketing News and Updates from the week of Dec 18-22, 2023.1. Site Structure Strategy - Understanding the basics of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) can significantly enhance your online presence. Gary Illyes from Google has recently shed light on the importance of using a hierarchical site structure for SEO, a strategy crucial for making your website more accessible and understandable to both users and search engines.Illyes explains two types of site structures: hierarchical and flat. A flat site structure links every page directly from the home page, making each page just one click away. This approach was popular when sites relied heavily on web directories and reciprocal linking. However, as Google reduced the influence of PageRank as a ranking factor, the flat structure became less relevant. In contrast, a hierarchical site structure organizes content from general to specific. The home page covers the most general topic, with links to categories, subcategories, and individual pages that delve into more specific topics. This structure not only makes it easier for users to navigate your site but also helps search engines understand and categorize your content effectively.A hierarchical structure offers several advantages: Improved User Experience: It makes it easier for visitors to find what they're looking for, enhancing their overall experience on your site. Better SEO: By clearly categorizing your content, search engines can more easily index and rank your pages. Flexibility: It allows you to create distinct sections on your site, like a news section, which can be crawled and indexed differently by search engines. The choice between a hierarchical and a flat structure depends on your site's size and complexity. For larger sites with diverse content, a hierarchical structure is more beneficial. It allows for better organization and easier management of different content sections. He explained, "hierarchical structure will allow you to do funky stuff on just one section and will also allow search engines to potentially treat different sections differently. Especially when it comes to crawling. For example, having news section for newsy content and archives for old content would allow search engines to crawl news faster than the other directory. If you put everything in one directory that's not really possible."For small business owners, adopting a hierarchical site structure, as suggested by Gary Illyes from Google, can significantly improve your website's SEO performance. It's not just about organizing content; it's about making your site more accessible and relevant to both your audience and search engines. By implementing this structure, you can enhance user experience, improve search rankings, and ultimately drive more traffic to your site.2. Decoding the Dec 21 Spam Attack: Key Lessons to Elevate Your SEO Strategy! - On December 21, 2023, Google's search results were overwhelmed by a massive spam attack. This event highlights the vulnerability of search engines to spam tactics and the potential impact on businesses relying on online visibility. The attack involved numerous domains ranking for hundreds of thousands of keywords, indicating a large-scale operation. The spam was first noticed when almost all top search results for specific queries, like "Craigslist used auto parts," turned out to be spam, except for a few legitimate listings. The spam sites exploited three main opportunities within Google's ranking system: Local Search Algorithm: This algorithm is more permissive, allowing local businesses to rank without many links. Spammers used this to their advantage, targeting local search queries. Longtail Keywords: These are low-volume, specific phrases. Due to their low competition, it's easier for spammers to rank in these areas. New Domain Advantage: Google gives new sites a short period of 'benefit of the doubt' to rank in search results. Many spam domains were newly registered, exploiting this window. The effectiveness of this technique lies in the different algorithms Google uses for local and non-local searches. Local search algorithms are more lenient, allowing these spam sites to rank with minimal effort. he December 21, 2023, spam attack on Google's search results offers valuable insights for business owners looking to enhance their SEO strategies. This incident, where numerous domains ranked for an unusually high number of keywords, sheds light on the vulnerabilities and opportunities within Google's ranking system.Key Learnings from the Spam Attack Exploiting Low-Competition Areas: The spam attack targeted low-competition keywords, particularly in local search and longtail queries. For legitimate businesses, this highlights the potential of focusing on niche, specific keywords where competition is lower, increasing the chances of ranking higher. Understanding Google's Algorithms: The spammers took advantage of the local search algorithm's leniency and the initial ranking boost given to new domains. This underscores the importance of understanding how different SEO factors work, including the impact of new content and the specific requirements of local SEO. The Power of Longtail Keywords: The attack successfully utilized longtail keywords, which are specific and often less targeted by major competitors. For businesses, incorporating longtail keywords into their SEO strategy can capture niche markets and attract highly targeted traffic. Applying These Insights to Your SEO Strategy Focus on Local SEO: If you're a local business, optimize for local search queries. Ensure your business is listed accurately on Google My Business, and use local keywords in your website's content. Leverage Long Tail Keywords: Conduct thorough keyword research to identify longtail keywords relevant to your business. These keywords can drive targeted traffic and are generally easier to rank for. Monitor New Trends and Updates: Stay informed about the latest SEO trends and Google algorithm updates. Understanding these changes can help you adapt your strategies effectively. Diversify Your Online Presence: Don't rely solely on organic search rankings. Utilize social media, email marketing, and other channels to build a robust online presence. 3. Is Your Company Blog Google News Worthy? - Google's John Mueller addressed a crucial question: Can company blogs be eligible for Google News? This is particularly relevant for small business owners seeking to expand their reach and visibility online.Mueller clarified that while he works on search, which is somewhat separate from Google News, there's nothing in Google News content policies specifically excluding company blogs. This opens up an opportunity for business blogs to be featured, provided they meet certain criteria. To be considered for Google News, your blog content must adhere to specific guidelines. These include: Clear Dates and Bylines: Each article should have a visible publication date and author byline. Author, Publication, and Publisher Information: Details about the authors, the publication, and the company or network behind the content are essential. Contact Information: Providing contact details adds credibility and transparency to your content. While Google can automatically discover news content, being proactive can increase your chances. You can submit your blog URL for consideration through Google's Publisher Center. This step is crucial for small business owners looking to leverage their company blog for greater visibility.FYI: Google News does feature content from company blogs. For instance, GridinSoft company's blog and Adobe's company webpage have been shown in Google News. This demonstrates that while dedicated news sites are more common, company blogs that publish news are also considered. For small business owners, this information is a game-changer. It means that your company blog has the potential to be featured in Google News, provided it meets Google's content policies. This can lead to increased exposure, traffic, and potentially, a steady stream of advertising income. It's an opportunity to elevate your content strategy and expand your digital footprint in a meaningful way.4. Perfect SEO Isn't a Reality for Your Business - Google's John Mueller in his last SEO office hours of December 2023, where he stated, "no SEO is perfect." This insight is particularly relevant for business owners who may feel overwhelmed by the constantly evolving landscape of SEO.SEO is an ever-changing field, influenced by the continuous evolution of the internet, search engines, and user behavior. This fluidity means that what works today in SEO might not be as effective tomorrow. The technical elements like structured data and quality considerations are always in flux, making the idea of achieving 'perfect' SEO unattainable.Despite the impossibility of perfect SEO, Mueller emphasizes the importance of engaging in SEO practices. The goal isn't to achieve perfection but to adapt and evolve with the changes. SEO remains a crucial element in enhancing online visibility, driving traffic, and improving user engagement.Key Takeaways for Business Owners Adaptability is Key: Stay informed about the latest SEO trends and algorithm updates. Being adaptable in your SEO strategy is more valuable than striving for perfection. Focus on Quality and Relevance: Instead of chasing perfection, concentrate on creating high-quality, relevant content that resonates with your audience and adheres to SEO best practices. Continuous Learning and Improvement: SEO is a journey, not a destination. Regularly review and update your SEO strategies to align with current best practices and user preferences. Don't Be Discouraged: The complexity of SEO can be daunting, but don't let the pursuit of perfection discourage you. Even small, consistent efforts in SEO can yield significant benefits over time. For small business owners, understanding that 'no SEO is perfect' can be liberating. It shifts the focus from chasing an unattainable goal to developing a flexible, quality-focused approach that grows with your business and the digital landscape. Embracing this mindset allows you to navigate the complexities of SEO with more confidence and less stress, ultimately leading to a more robust and effective online presence.5. Does a Double Slash in URLs Affect Your SEO? - Google's Gary Illyes addressed a common query: does a double forward slash in a URL affect a website's SEO? Double forward slashes in URLs often result from coding issues in the CMS (Content Management System) or the .htaccess file. This can lead to the creation of duplicate webpages that differ only in their URL structure. Resolving this issue isn't as simple as rewriting the URL to remove the extra slash; the root cause must be identified and corrected.Gary Illyes clarified that from a technical SEO perspective, having double slashes in a URL is not problematic. According to RFC 3986, section 3, a forward slash is a standard separator in URLs and can appear multiple times, even consecutively. However, from a usability standpoint, double slashes are not ideal. They could potentially confuse users and some web crawlers. The usability of a website is crucial because it can affect user satisfaction and, indirectly, the site's popularity and visibility. If a site is difficult to navigate or understand, it may deter users and reduce the likelihood of being recommended or linked to by other sites. Similarly, anything that causes confusion for web crawlers can directly impact SEO. It's essential for a site to be easily crawlable and understandable. To avoid potential issues: Regularly check your website for double slashes and other URL anomalies. Consult with an htaccess expert or a developer to identify and fix the source of the problem. Use tools like Screaming Frog to pinpoint where the double forward slash issue starts, providing clues to the underlying technical issue. For small business owners, understanding and addressing these seemingly minor details can make a significant difference in SEO performance. While Google may be able to navigate through such issues, relying on this is not a best practice. Proactively managing your site's technical health ensures a better user experience and optimizes your site for search engines.6. DBAs Now Accepted for Advertiser Verification! - Google Ads has made a change to its Advertiser Verification Program and now accepts DBAs (Doing Business As) or trade names for verification. This development is particularly important for small business owners who often operate under trade names or DBAs.Previously, the Google Ads Advertiser Verification Program required advertisers to use their legal business names for verification. This posed a challenge for many businesses that operate under a DBA or a trade name different from their legal name. With this update, Google Ads acknowledges the common practice of using DBAs and adapts its verification process accordingly.Implications for Business Owners Broader Accessibility: This change makes the verification process more accessible to a wider range of businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises that commonly use DBAs. Brand Consistency: Businesses can now maintain brand consistency across their advertising and legal documentation. This is crucial for brand recognition and trust among consumers. Simplified Verification Process: The inclusion of DBAs simplifies the verification process for many businesses, reducing the administrative burden and potential confusion. To be verified under a DBA or trade name, the legal document submitted for verification must include both the legal name and the DBA/trade name. This ensures that Google can accurately associate the trade name with the legal entity behind it.7. Reservation Campaigns in YouTube Ads - YouTube/Google Ads has simplified the process of setting up reservation video campaigns, a type of advertising that offers fixed-rate impressions, ideal for brand awareness and product promotions.Reservation campaigns are a form of advertising where ad placements are purchased in advance at a fixed rate, typically on a cost-per-thousand impressions (CPM) basis. Unlike auction-based ads, where placements are bid on in real-time, reservation campaigns guarantee ad placement, making them ideal for high-impact advertising and ensuring visibility for crucial campaigns.Key Features of the New System Self-Service Options: Advertisers can now easily set up reservation video campaigns through Google Ads, streamlining the process of buying high-visibility ad placements like YouTube Select lineups and Masthead. Enhanced Targeting Options: The update includes advanced targeting capabilities, such as YouTube Select topic and interest-based targeting, along with demographic targeting, allowing advertisers to reach their desired audience more precisely. Access to Premier Content: Advertisers gain access to prominent placements like the YouTube Masthead and premier content via YouTube Select, ensuring a broader audience reach. Diverse Ad Formats: The system offers various ad formats, including non-skippable in-stream ads and bumper ads, catering to different campaign needs and audience preferences. Benefits for Business Owners Greater Control and Visibility: With fixed-rate impressions and guaranteed placements, reservation campaigns offer more control over ad impressions and higher visibility for your brand. Targeted Reach: The expanded targeting options enable businesses to tailor their campaigns more effectively, reaching the right audience with relevant content. Efficiency and Flexibility: The streamlined process saves time and effort, allowing businesses to focus more on the creative aspects and strategy of their campaigns. For small business owners, Google's update to reservation video campaigns on YouTube simplifies the process of creating impactful brand awareness and product promotion campaigns, leveraging YouTube's vast audience. Familiarizing yourself with this new system and aligning your campaigns with Google's policies will be key to maximizing your brand's exposure on one of the world's most popular video platforms.

Data warehouses are amazing things: you can toss all kinds of information into them then pull mind-blowing insights out the other end. This feat can happen because you're connected to outside systems holding their own database tables. A copy of whatever has recently gone into the table is taken out and shot through a data pipeline and pushed into your data warehouse. But today's data stacks contain Multiple clouds, hybrid environments, and so many data pipelines the programs in charge of monitoring and logging the flows almost can't manage them. It becomes overwhelming to manually check and ensure the quality and integrity of the data. The more sophisticated the systems, the more errors creep into the data. If we rely on flawed data, the outcomes and insights we generate will be equally flawed. This is where data observability comes in. In this episode you will hear about something called an observability platform. It identifies real-time data anomalies and pipeline errors in data warehouses. Now there's a twist here because we're in a cloud computing environment that charges by number of computing cycles. You don't want an observability tool that's another pipe accessing client data and running up the meter. The good news is there's an easier way to detect when data has gone awry, by comparing log files - basically metadata - they are just as effective at alerting you to problems. If you'd like what this is doing described in a completely non-technical way, think of Hans Christian Andersen's Princess and the Pea. There is a girl who comes to a castle seeking shelter from the rain claiming to be a princess. The queen doubts whether she is truly of noble blood, and offers her a bed, but this bed has twenty mattresses and twenty down-filled comforters on it. A pea is placed underneath the bottom mattress to test if this girl detects anything. The next morning, the princess says that she endured a sleepless night; there must have been something hard in the bed. They realize then and there that she must be a princess, since no one but a real princess could be so delicate. I spoke with Yuliia Tkachova, the co-founder and CEO of Masthead Data, a company which recently received $1.3M in a pre-seed round. Originally from Ukraine, Yuliia came to found Masthead after work that convinced her of the need for an observability solution. And that actually speeds up all the troubleshooting from hours to minutes. And this is the ultimate goal where we deliver. Because again, my belief that if you don't have this lineage piece was mapped anomalous in errors, it's not observability. It's monitoring. [...] What is also very unique to us, because Masthead operates on logs, it's triggered by logs. So, we do support streaming data. Unlike SQL-first solutions, as you can guess. We don't have to run SQL queries to see if they're anomalous, we're triggered by logs. And this is also what sets us apart.” – Yuliia Tkachova-------------------Episode Timestamps:(01:14): What got Yuliia excited about math and statistics(11:31): The basic human right to privacy(18:21): What open source data means to Yuliia(28:00): Yuliia's reason for building a solution focused on privacy and security(38:09): One question Yuliia wishes to be asked(42:21): Yuliia's advice for the audience(44:46): Backstage takeaways with executive producer, Audra Montenegro-------------------Links:LinkedIn - Connect with YuliiaVisit Masthead Data
After 116 years, the "dominion" masthead is disappearing from newstands in the capital. The capital's last surviving daily paper The Dominion Post - started 21 years ago as a merger of The Dominion and The Evening Post - is being rebranded The Post. Ruth Hill asks - what's in a name?
This week, it's interview time again. A few months ago, I sat down with Doren Tripp, Coworking Manager of a neat little place called the Masthead in Wilkes, my hometown. Through the course of the interview we'll discuss what coworking is, how the Masthead got to Wilkes, and how coworking can benefit people in today's world. Get up to speed with the Digital Marketing News and Updates from the week of Feb 3-10, 2023.1. YouTube: Buy Specific Time Slots Around Major Events Through Cost-Per-Hour Masthead Ads - YouTube's Cost-Per-Hour Masthead enables brands to own the most prominent placement in the app during the hour(s) leading up to, during or after priority moments. By using the Masthead Ads, brands and advertisers can maximize visibility, reach and impact, delivering their message to a captive audience and potentially increasing conversions. For example, “During the recent World Cup], McDonald's Brazil turned to the YouTube Cost-Per-Hour Masthead. Their strategy was savvy: reach anyone in Brazil who was watching YouTube an hour before the Brazil vs. Cameroon match and remind them to pick up McDonald's before the game started. This perfectly timed execution delivered tens of millions of impressions at the very moment fans were preparing for the match.”However, there's no indication right now how much the Masthead ads cost, or how much of the inventory is available. They may be a better option for national brands versus small or local businesses.2. Pinterest Posted Its Q4 ‘22 Earnings Report - Pinterest has posted its Q4 and full-year earnings for 2022, showing steady increases in both users and revenue. Pinterest added five million more active users – most of them coming from Europe – during the last quarter of 2022. Here are the user breakdowns: 95 million users in US & Canada (same as Q3'22) 124 million users in Europe (+4 million from Q3'22) 231 million users in Rest of World (+1 million from Q3'22) Pinterest's big winner on this front has been Idea Pins, its Stories-like option which presents uploaded video in a swipeable, full-screen display. The emphasis on this format has helped boost the platform's appeal with younger audiences, with Pinterest reporting that Gen Z was the fastest-growing demographic on the platform, increasing double digits year over year. On the revenue front, Pinterest posted a 4% year-over-year increase, after bringing in $877 million Q4'22. Revenue breakdowns: $722 million in US & Canada (+$147 mil from Q3'22) $123 million in Europe (+$37 mil from Q3'22) $32 million in Rest of World (+$8 mil from Q3'22) Average revenue per user (ARPU) is $7.60 for US & Canada, $1.01 for Europe, and $0.14 for RoW.Based on what I read, it feels cost of ads in Europe and Asia are significantly cheaper than it is in America & Canada. 3. Microsoft Ads Update - Here are the new products and features announced this week from Microsoft Ads: Last-touch attribution is also now available in all Microsoft Audience Network markets! This feature allows you to change your conversion goal attribution, which will allow Microsoft's Automated bidding solutions to take both click-based and view-through conversions into account. For all Automated bidding tactics, Microsoft Ads now also have data exclusions, which will help inform Microsoft Advertising's Automated bidding algorithms in case there's a data outage on your website or any other unintended conversion tracking changes. This will allow you to ensure your Automated bidding algorithms get precise information and maintain optimal performance! Google Import in Microsoft Advertising makes transferring Smart Campaigns from Google Ads over to Microsoft Advertising easy, helping you reach more customers instantly. And as of this month, this capability is now available in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, New Zealand, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, and Singapore. Save time and import your Google Smart Campaigns in just a few clicks today! 4. Google Recommends JSON-LD For Structured Data - Google updated the structured data guidance to explain that while any of the three structured data formats (JSON-LD, Microdata & RDFa) are acceptable to Google, however they prefer JSON-LD. Here is what they wrote:“Google Search supports structured data in the following formats, unless documented otherwise. In general, we recommend using a format that's easiest for you to implement and maintain (in most cases, that's JSON-LD); all 3 formats are equally fine for Google, as long as the markup is valid and properly implemented per the feature's documentation. In general, Google recommends using JSON-LD for structured data if your site's setup allows it, as it's the easiest solution for website owners to implement and maintain at scale (in other words, less prone to user errors).”5. Google Is Now OK With AI-Generated Content - Last year Google was against AI generated content and Google's Search Advocate John Mueller during April 22 SEO Office hour said that content automatically generated with AI writing tools was considered spam and is against its webmaster guidelines. However, ChatGPT has changed the game so much so that now Google has clarified that AI-generated content is not against its guidelines, revising its previous stance on AI-created material, and how it will, or won't be ranked by Google Search. This is what Google wrote in their search central blog post: “When it comes to automatically generated content, our guidance has been consistent for years. Using automation- including AI - to generate content with the primary purpose of manipulating ranking in search results is a violation of our spam policies. This said, it's important to recognize that not all use of automation, including AI generation, is spam. Automation has long been used to generate helpful content, such as sports scores, weather forecasts, and transcripts. AI has the ability to power new levels of expression and creativity, and to serve as a critical tool to help people create great content for the web…. Appropriate use of AI or automation is not against our guidelines. This means that it is not used to generate content primarily to manipulate search rankings, which is against our spam policies.”

Uber Testing “Journey Ads” - Marketers Can Target Riders By Destination - Uber, the ride-hailing company is expanding its advertising business and is testing out ‘Journey Ads' to its riders based on their travel history and their geographic locations. The journey ads will be shown in the Uber app at least three times during the riders' journey. Uber will allow brands to place ads using data drawn from riders' travel history and their precise geographic destinations. For example, if a user books an Uber to a specific retailer, cinema or airport, an advertiser could buy ads centered on that location. An Uber spokeswoman said, "Uber does not share user data with advertisers. The information that Uber shares is limited to aggregated information or other non-personal data, such as the percentage of users who clicked on an ad, or the number of users who visit the retail locations of advertisers using our platform. Users can opt-out of targeted ads on the Uber app at any time"3. New Features for Facebook Groups Announced In Communities Summit 2022 - Facebook has announced a range of new groups features during the Communities Summit 2022, including new Stories sharing tools, view-only chats, custom member profile displays, and more. The ability to share a public Facebook event for your community to your Instagram story. Whether you're a group admin hosting a meet-up to celebrate a community milestone, or a group member sharing your passion with friends, this feature can help you showcase your community more broadly. Facebook's also testing new customization options for people's 'About Me' section specific to each community, in order to better highlight relevant information for that audience, along with a new indicator that highlights whether you're open to private messaging. Facebook's also testing the ability for group admins and moderators to create view-only chats to send one-way communications to all of their members (without having to maintain or respond to messages in the chat), and a new process to highlight top contributing members, who'll be able to earn points by taking on group engagement responsibilities. Facebook's also trying out a new element within Admin Assist that'll enable group admins to implement automatic removal of posts containing information, as determined by Meta's third-party fact-checkers. 4. Instagram Announces ‘Creator Portfolio' Option - Instagram has officially announced its ‘Creator Portfolio' option, which will enable creators to build what's essentially a media kit type package, in order to showcase their audience reach, as well as previous brand work. It's similar to Instagram's Creator Marketplace listings where influencers are presented in a collective showcase – though a Creator Portfolio enables individual users to share their profile direct with potential partners in the app. 5. Google: The Importance Of Image Filenames And One Big Mistake To Avoid - Google's documentation doesn't say if image filenames are ranking factors. But they do say that Google takes note of them in order to help figure out what the image is about. For that reason it's recommended by Google that images be given meaningful filenames. It's also a good practice to give meaningful filenames to images because it makes it easier for organization purposes to be able to see the image filename and know what it's about. In Episode 48 of Search Off the Record podcast, Google's Lizzi Sassman and John Mueller discussed the importance of image filenames and here is the gist of their conversation: Image filenames that are descriptive are helpful from an Image Search standpoint because they help Google understand what an image is about. Alt text and the text surrounding the image provide a stronger and more important signal about the image than the filename. Changing the image filename of an already indexed image has a “minimal effect” and likely won't make it better. Changing the filename of an indexed image may result in the renamed image going uncrawled and not indexed for months. 6. Google : The One Thing To Do Before Implementing Geo IP Redirects - Geo IP based redirection is the process of automatically redirecting a website visitor by their geolocation (country, state or city). It works by detecting the visitor's location from their IP address by matching it against a database of IPs and locations. In the latest #AskGooglebot video series, Google's Search Advocate, John Mueller, shares that “this is a pretty complex topic and it can cause headaches depending on how it's implemented. So I'd recommend getting help from experts or reaching out to the Search Central help forum for advice. The most important aspect here is that Googlebot usually crawls and indexes a website just from a single location. If you're showing different content by location only one version will be indexed for search. Because of that, if there's something you consider important on your website, make sure it's on the default content that's shown to all users. And finally, if there's any page you want to have findable in search, make sure that you're not blocking users in other locations from reaching that page.”7. Google: To Have An Unique URL You Need A Character The /? - Google's John Mueller said on Twitter "Using just "/?" at the end of a URL is equivalent to not having anything after the slash. You need at least 1 character after the "?"."8. Google: There Is No Need To Use English URLs For Pages Not In English - Google's John Mueller wrote on Twitter "There's no need to use English URLs of the content isn't in English. That said, keywords in URLs are a bit overrated, so I wouldn't worry too much about it." The same information was conveyed back in 2018 in a video.9. Google: Spam Update Rolling Out - It has been 11 months since the last time Google released a spam update and now Google announced the October 2022 spam update. The spam updates help document reads:“While Google's automated systems to detect search spam are constantly operating, we occasionally make notable improvements to how they work. When we do, we refer to this as a spam update and share when they happen on our list of Google Search ranking updates. For example, SpamBrain is our AI-based spam-prevention system. From time-to-time, we improve that system to make it better at spotting spam and to help ensure it catches new types of spam.”Here are the important things you need to know about the October 2022 Spam Update: Name: Google October 2022 Spam Update Launched: October 19, 2022 at around 11 am ET Rollout: It will take several days to fully roll out Targets: It improves Google's spam detection techniques, Google said "sites that violate our policies may rank lower in results or not appear in results at all." Penalty: It penalizes spam techniques that are against Google's spam policies. Global: This is a global update impacting all regions and languages. Impact: Google will not disclose what percentage of queries or searches were impacted by this update. Recover: If you were hit by this, Google said you should review its spam policies to ensure they are complying with those. Refreshes: Google will do periodic refreshes to the spam update. It can take many months to recover, Google said. 10. These features will be available on November 10.11. Google Ads Updates “Unavailable Video” Policy - This week, Google quietly updated its “Unavailable Video” policy to give advertisers a clearer understanding of the disapproval reason and how to rectify the issue quickly. The four reasons why you may receive an ad disapproval with “Unavailable Video” policy are: Video status changed to “deleted” after submission. Video status changed to “private” after submission. Video marked live premiere. Videos marked sponsors or members only. 12. Google Ads: Seasonal Video Ad Templates Are Now Available - To support your holiday and seasonal marketing efforts, new seasonally-themed video ad templates are available in Google Ads. The templates have designs and music tracks that reference the following holidays and moments: Diwali, Hanukkah, Christmas and seasonal sales events like Cyber Monday and Black Friday. Videos you make may be used in any campaign that accepts video assets, like Performance Max campaigns, Video action campaigns and App campaigns. These campaign types automatically scale to YouTube Shorts inventory, where vertical video assets are most effective. You can browse all of the templates by clicking here.13. Google Ads : 3 New Reporting Columns - Google Ads has rolled out three new columns to reports that make it easier to understand how conversions impact campaign performance. Before this update, you would have had to apply custom segments to see each conversion action and the categories they fall under. Now the data is more readily available. The new columns are: Results : shows the number of conversions you've received across your primary conversion actions for each of the standard goals in your account. In addition, you'll also see the impact this campaign is driving against goals it's not optimizing towards. Results value : shows the calculated conversion values you've received across your primary conversion actions for each of the standard goals in your account. Conversion goals: shows the goals listed in your campaign-level settings that drive performance. 14. Google/YouTube Audio Ads Now Available - Google in their announcement cites data from Edison Research that finds YouTube is the second-most popular destination for listening to podcasts. Now, all Google advertisers can reach podcast listeners with audio ads on YouTube. Audio ads are also served to people who listen to music on YouTube. However, there's an option to limit targeting to podcast listeners if that's who you're primarily interested in targeting.

1. Microsoft Advertising Sunsetting ETAs Too & Auto-Generate Remarketing List - Following Google Ads footsteps, Microsoft Advertising announced that beginning June 30, 2022, responsive search ads (RSAs) will be the only search ad type that can be created or edited in standard search campaigns. introducing a new product that can automatically generate remarketing lists for advertisers. The three types of auto-generated remarketing lists are: All Visitors list: A list of users who visited the advertiser's website in the past 30 days. All Converters list: A list of users who converted within the past 180 days. Smart Remarketing list: A list of users likely to convert, powered by Microsoft Advertising's audience intelligence and designed to deliver a higher conversion rate. Advertisers can use one, two or all three lists simultaneously, along with their existing remarketing and audience targeting lists. Universal Event Tracking and active conversion goals will need to be configured to leverage the All Converters and Smart Remarketing list options.2. Pinterest Adds New Shopping Features, Including Brand Profile Details and Sponsored Idea Pins - Andrew @ Socialmediatoday.com writes - Pinterest is adding a new ‘Slideshow for Collections' promotion option, which will source products from your uploaded catalog “into an automatically generated, attention-grabbing collections ad”. The new Slideshow for Collections ad unit will appear in-stream in relevant searches, helping to reach people that have already shown interest in similar products. When tapped, the unit then expands into a more focused collection of your products, again, all automatically generated based on your inventory.Pinterest is also adding new merchant details to brand profiles, which will enable businesses to showcase their values in the app. This provides another way to facilitate stronger brand connection, especially among more socially-conscious, younger shoppers who are increasingly looking to buy from brands that align with their values.Pinterest is also expanding its Verified Merchant Program, which highlights businesses that meet Pinterest's customer service and brand connection guidelines with a verified checkmark in the app. Launched last year in the US, Pinterest's Verified Merchant program ensures that more businesses are linking their product catalog into the app, while also adhering to Pinterest's customer response standards. And finally, Pinterest is also testing a new sponsored content option for Idea Pins, which is Pinterest's take on the Stories format. Sponsored Idea Pins are displayed with a profile image of the creator, along with a “Paid Partnership” tag to disclose the brand relationship. Sponsored Idea Pins will also, importantly, provide Pinterest with another means to help creators earn money, and get paid for their efforts, which will ensure more, higher quality Idea Pins keep flowing.3. Snapchat Rolls Out Run for Office Mini - From socialmediatoday, over the past few years, Snapchat has been working to get its young user base more involved in the political process, through voting awareness stickers, polling location tracking, voter registration pushes, Discover programming and more. And now, Snap's looking to take the next step in civic engagement, by prompting its users to actually become politicians, and directly influence political shifts. The ‘Run for Office' mini provides a range of key insights into local political positions, as well as explainers on the steps that people need to take in order to nominate themselves for relevant local ballots and positions. The mini will also include info on filing deadlines and signature requirements, and provide contact information for local election offices.Snapchatters in the US can access the new ‘Run for Office' mini by opening Snapchat and swiping down on the camera screen to access Snap's in-app games, where the mini will be listed, or you can search ‘Run for Office' within Snapchat.4. Snapchat Announces New Creator Monetization Tools as it Seeks to Maximize In-App Engagement - From SocialMediaToday.com, Snapchat's launching new ‘Spotlight Challenges' (payment program for its TikTok-like Spotlight feed), which will provide cash prizes for users who post the best videos on a specific theme. The new Spotlight Challenges will outline the specifics of each trend, as well as the prizes on offer for the best performing clips in each category. It's a fairly straightforward process, and it could provide a means for Snapchat to fuel rising content trends, which is one of the key ways that users engage on TikTok. It could also provide a new revenue opportunity for the app, with brands eventually able to sponsor specific Spotlight trends relative to their promotions.“The total prize amount for individual Spotlight Challenges will typically range from $1k to $25k, although occasionally we may make available a larger sum for a particular Challenge, and the minimum prize a Snapchatter can win in a Spotlight Challenge is $250.”At launch, in November last year, Snapchat announced that it would pay out $1 million per day, to be shared among the top-performing Spotlight clips, as means to incentivize engagement, and kick-start the offering. Which worked – by the end of Q1, Spotlight had jumped to 125 million monthly active users (out of Snapchat's 280m total actives), but by that stage, Snap had already paid out $90 million in creator payments, with more to come, and the cost-to-benefit ratio was starting to look a little out of whack.Hindsight aside, with the costs continuing to mount up, in June, Snap announced an update to its Spotlight payment process, shifting from daily payments of $1 million for Spotlight clips to a more vague 'millions per month'. That's caused various problems for Snap creators, who had already raised concerns about delayed payments and other issues with the program. Maybe, then, this will be a more logical, and sustainable means of funding Spotlight clips, which could also entice a broader range of creators into the program, as opposed to the top creators taking the lion's share of the funding.5. Mailchimp Helps SMBs Optimize Email Campaigns - Mailchimp, the email marketing platform, has announced new functionality to help optimize email campaigns. Instagram Combines IGTV, Feed Videos Into Single Format, Instagram Video - From Instagram: “Starting today, we're combining IGTV and feed videos into one format - Instagram Video. We're also introducing a new Video tab on your profile, where this combined video format will live, to make it easier for people to discover new video content.”The new video tab, signified by a play button icon, will now display all of your uploaded videos in one place. The merging of IGTV and general Instagram video will also provide new playback functionality, with viewers able to tap anywhere on the video to enter full-screen mode, while users will also be able to keep scrolling “to discover new video content from creators that may interest them”.In addition, Instagram's also adding new trimming tools and filters for all uploaded video clips, as well as location tagging in videos (previously not available for IGTV).“Video previews in feed will now be 60 seconds long, unless the video is eligible for ads - in which case, the preview will still be 15 seconds.” That means users will be able to view more of your content without having to tap through, which could help generate more interest, and will have impacts for those looking to maximize engagement with their in-stream previews. And finally, Instagram's also changing the name of its video ads: “With Instagram Video, IGTV Ads are now called Instagram In-Stream video ads. Eligible creators can still monetize their long-form content, and brands can reach audiences engaging with long-form video. For businesses interested in boosting their videos to reach more people, videos must be no longer than 60 seconds in length.”9. Google Shifts AdSense to First-Price Auction. How Will It Impact Google Ads? - Per Google: “In the early days of online display advertising, ad space was sold to advertisers in a second-price auction, where the final price paid by the winner was determined by the amount of the second-highest bid. Over time, many ad selling platforms in the display advertising ecosystem, including Google Ad Manager and Google AdMob, switched their auction to first-price. In a first-price auction, the final price reflects the winning bid.”For example, right now, in AdSense bidding, the final price of each ad is 0.01c higher than the second-placed bid. So if two brands bid $5 and $6 respectively for an ad slot, the winning bidder ends up paying $5.01. Under a first price auction model, however, the winning bid would be the full top bid – so the advertiser would pay $6 for the impression. That will likely mean more revenue for publishers, and Google – though Google says that the actual impacts will be limited. You can read more about the coming update here.10. Google Adds Search Console integration to Google Analytics, New Data Attribution Modeling - From Google: “Search Console provides detailed information about your website's organic Search performance, including the site's rank in Search results, queries that led to clicks, and post-click data, like engaged sessions and conversions. With the new Search Console integration, you'll be able to understand the role that organic Search plays in driving traffic to, and engagement on your site, relative to other marketing channels like Search ads, email, or social.”Analytics has always incorporated various search insights, and for many, those will be enough to provide a picture of how Google search is driving traffic to your site (or not). But for those looking to further optimize their SEO processes, the new Search Console integration will provide more specific data, which could help you develop a more all-encompassing, and engaging, SEO optimization process. In addition to this, Google's also adding data-driven attribution, with no minimum threshold requirements, to Google Analytics 4 properties. BTW, we cover a lot more about data-drive attribution in episode 76 of the TWIMshow where we shared how Google is moving away from last-click attribution wherever possible, as it's not an accurate indicator of overall digital marketing performance. “Google's data-driven attribution models give you a better understanding of how all of your marketing activities collectively influence your conversions, so you don't over or undervalue a single channel. Unlike last-click attribution, where 100% of the credit goes to the final interaction, data-driven attribution distributes credit to each marketing touchpoint based on how much impact the touchpoint had on driving a conversion.”And finally, Google's also looking to counter the loss of attribution data, amid the shift to more data privacy controls, by adding new modeling prediction capacity to Analytics.“Using Google's advanced modeling technology, the new Google Analytics allows you to fill gaps in your understanding of customer behavior when cookies and other identifiers aren't available. It analyzes vast amounts of historical data, identifies correlations and trends between key data points, and uses those insights to make predictions about the customer journey.”11. YouTube Ads Available on Connected Television (CTV) Platforms - YouTube is looking to help advertisers tap into the rising consumption of YouTube content on home TV sets with the expansion of Video Action campaigns to Connected TV (CTV) placements. Video action campaigns now include CTV inventory to help advertisers reach new customers and drive more online sales. Per Google, “If your goal is to drive online sales or generate leads, we recommend using Video Action campaigns. Video Action campaigns make it easy to find new customers efficiently in a single campaign by combining inventory from across YouTube and Google video partners - and now YouTube CTV. For the first time, performance advertisers can take advantage of YouTube on CTV to drive and measure conversions.”Video Action campaigns display a URL at the bottom of the screen, prompting further action on the brand's website. Which, given that people can't click or tap on a URL link on their TV set, is one of the best ways to drive direct response – though it is less ‘direct' than the normal definition of that term. The expansion of Video Action campaigns is the latest advance on this, while YouTube also provides Masthead ads for CTV, and has improved its ad targeting options specifically for CTV campaigns. It's a good addition, which will be valuable for brands seeking traditional TV-like ad placement. And as CTV consumption continues to rise, TV-like ads are becoming more affordable, with better targeting and more specific audience options to better balance cost, and maximize efficiency. Pastor Bill: [0:13] Hello and welcome to Season 3 episode 46 of The Berean Manifesto. I'm Pastor Bill and I'm joined by Pastor Newms, as always, who is just cracking himself up over there. Pastor Newms: So, sometimes your internet, both your cell phone, internet and your... Pastor Bill: [0:40] Sometimes? You mean you mean on Sundays? Pastor Newms: [0:44] Especially on Sundays, but every now and then there's a little bit of a problem something about Sunday's so the whole pre-meeting it's been fine the moment you went hello, and you kept talking but you were right here so it was they actually they could actually see you you froze so it's just that funny situation of. Pastor Bill: [1:11] So all right this week we are we're going to be talking about Grace right and I'm not sure if Pastor Newms had anywhere that's he's going to be, "Hey I found this in the scripture let's talk about this," kind of guy. He's more of the saw this in real life I know there's a scripture that correlates to this. I'm like all this this and he's like yes I knew there was something I could remember but I wasn't sure yeah and I'm more of the well let's start here and then we'll go from there different mine, because it gives us this, you know we riff off of each other and it kind of escalates everything when we're talking and carries us forward I know you had said in jest, um you were talking about when we were talking about last week's topic you had said something about being under certain path, yada yada and I said okay but you're you're in my church like I'm the senior pastor but I don't think of you as being under me I think of you as, to me, together and you were like no no I've never I've never thought about it as you being over me or higher than me or and I was like Yeah because it was total cringe moment when I was thinking did he just apply that to our relationship, well this is I'm not over him, is not under me and he was like no no it's that whole you know iron sharpens iron crap or, exactly what it is you didn't say crap. Pastor Newms: [3:17] Sure I'm sure I said. Pastor Bill: [3:20] Now you probably you probably said the acronym for stow high in transit that's probably. Pastor Newms: [3:28] I am more crass than others no but what you're saying is really funny and it's true thing and I was like oh that's why I believe that and I didn't even realize it I had a similar moment this week we're like I was reading something and I. That's okay okay okay but yeah so now you have to ask me a question because we haven't done that yet. Pastor Bill: [4:06] I do have to ask you how was your week Pastor Newms? Pastor Newms: [4:09] It was good it was good little crazy starting the new job you know so everything's a little everything's busy because of that, and lots of meetings to get caught up and learn everything I need to learn and all that kind of stuff so I've been pretty busy, and, today I had to move a bunch of stuff in my house because one of my cats is misbehaving which is why in case you heard it on the Audio I don't know if you could or not but Mr Amy came through and was yelling at me because, he the boxes that he lays on in my office that are supposed to be bookshelves we haven't gotten them yet are gone, they're in the garage because one of the cats is not behaving herself and so he came in and he walked over to the window and looked up at it and then looked over at me and started meowing and that's why I was like oh sorry sir you're going to have to go lay down somewhere else and he just looked at me and walked away all like dude you got a like oh crap so. Pastor Bill: [5:20] Broke totally. Pastor Newms: [5:21] Overall it's good it's good we didn't stream at all I don't think just because I was very tired every night. Pastor Bill: [5:30] Now yeah you were tired all week just drained from the new job. Pastor Newms: [5:38] Just all the learning is you know it's rough when you're learning a new job and so getting caught up and it's going to be good really enjoying it love a lot of what they do as a company it's just, got to get there and so I've been swamped, how was your. Pastor Bill: [5:55] We will what we will be doing some streaming in the upcoming week though. Pastor Newms: [5:58] Yeah and I might break one of my Cardinal rules actually this week I might actually. Pastor Bill: [6:04] No don't do that no don't do it. Pastor Newms: [6:10] But the server launches at 8:00 a.m. Pastor Bill: [6:14] Okay you can wait until I get my the game fully downloaded before you play and then we can stream together. Pastor Newms: [6:22] I understand that but but that might not be 5 p.m. so we're as one of my Cardinal rules is you never stream during work hours depending on how my meeting is look, we'll see what happens. Pastor Bill: [6:44] No streaming during work hours. Pastor Newms: [6:46] Then it's going to be for 45 you better be ready to go because. Pastor Bill: [6:51] I can only go I can only install as fast as my internet will. Pastor Newms: [6:55] And now I realize after I just said that you're going to forcefully go whoosh no downloaded yet whoops no downloaded yet and that 501 your me like who get finished and so. Pastor Bill: [7:07] I would not lie to you. Pastor Newms: [7:16] No but you would purposely not check it so that way you didn't know if it was or not. Pastor Bill: [7:21] Maybe. Pastor Newms: [7:22] I know you homie neither one of us would lie to the other one but we real good we're like those Taffy pullers when we have to be you know the tech like I'm not going to break the Taffy but that Taffy. Pastor Bill: [7:32] Almost stretches. Pastor Newms: [7:34] The truth never got broke but man it it got works when it comes to the professional World sometimes that gotta get stretched a little anyhoo. Pastor Bill: [7:49] Some are weak so. Pastor Newms: [7:50] How was your week. Pastor Bill: [7:52] I discovered a new to me game outer worlds it is right there in your laughing because I know you can't hear him on the audio or see his face if you listen to the audio but, he's laughing because it's not a new game is an old game. Pastor Newms: [8:09] No to be fair it's only like two years. Pastor Bill: [8:13] It's two years old but it's new to me and it's right in the the vein and the niche of the things that I like like it's steampunk, but also site with some elements of cyberpunk and then it's like, you know the half-life type engine from the old Half-Life game so it's immersive and it's got all these elements. Pastor Newms: [8:38] Nothing it's the Unreal Engine but that's okay you know I can't let it go with it was a glaring technical issue like that but. Pastor Bill: [8:50] Dunno dunno Half-Life wasn't built on the Unreal Engine. Pastor Newms: [8:54] I'm fully aware it had its own engine. Pastor Bill: [8:57] It's only engine yes the Half-Life engine. Pastor Newms: [9:00] This was built on the Unreal Engine. Pastor Bill: [9:02] Right but this is reminiscent of the half-life engine Yeah a hundred percent. Pastor Newms: [9:04] Definitely a hundred percent hundred percent I just we're on Twitch and I didn't need the comment of you do know that was I don't I am not dealing with it not dealing with the super nerds no. Pastor Bill: [9:15] I deal with that all right so it's been really good for me it's right in them in my you know it's kind of thing that I like. Pastor Newms: [9:19] Mmm it's a terrible it's so satirical it's so much fun. Pastor Bill: [9:26] And it's a satirical and it's got lots of little elements that you can tell they pulled from their fans of this game their fans of that show and this and that you can see those almost kind of, you know when I wind it into the game and you're like hey this is actually just the recreated scene from that one show, um this whole kitchen is just recreated from that one show, I don't want to say the name of that one show on here because if I'm wrong I don't want you to get that go. Pastor Newms: [9:56] Thank you thank you we're not saying anyone did any copyright infringement but we're just saying. Pastor Bill: [10:01] Mmm we're saying hey looks just like to me it looks just like. Pastor Newms: [10:04] They gave a nod to and that was a conversation mean you had and that's like they didn't recreate it you're like fine they were heavily inspired by and they showed their love through I was like there you go yeah. Pastor Bill: [10:16] There ya go, all right so that's been fun I had in my free time I've been doing that, and I got to my mom this week you know post her surgery after surgery she's doing well so that's good I'm glad that she's doing well and that that's pretty that was pretty much my whole week I can't think of. Pastor Newms: [10:37] You tore apart the car console. Pastor Bill: [10:42] That was today but yeah that way I guess that counts as part of this week. I have never torn apart a car console that was so reinforced in my life every other car I've had, you give some pressure of the clips pop and then you kind of you know you do this number to loosen it up and pull it off, and this is got clips and bolts and screws and and I'm like what yeah it was crazy, but basically we have this this sensor that needs to be replaced and every time the sensor then, shows an alert it it dings, thing thing and so you'll be sitting at a red light and it'll literally just be going ding ding ding ding ding ding, because the alarm will go off and then come back on again off and come back on again off so every time it does it the screen also flashes, and then you get a message on little center console a new message on center console so it beeps as well so yeah ding beep ding beep ding bit as you're sitting them okay I gotta fix this. So you know since it takes a while to get in to see the mechanic sometimes because of working out schedules and Roxanne still gotta work and that car I pulled apart the dash and ripped out that speaker, that controls all the dings so no more dings for that or for low fuel or for seatbelt warning or for how your keys are in the ignition and the doors open we don't need any of those, they're all gone. Pastor Newms: [12:24] Which is great up until when you need one of those and I'm going to laugh when you're like, guess what happened. Pastor Bill: [12:33] Israel You Gotta Laugh. Pastor Newms: [12:35] Biggs is question I don't know where everyone else is no one else has shouted out that they're here so I don't know. Pastor Bill: [12:43] Is anyone else even here. Pastor Newms: [12:44] It shows that we have three viewers so I'm assuming they're lurking and that's okay. Pastor Bill: [12:50] I lurk I don't like to sound off either so don't don't feel bad if you're not sounding off because you just want to watch I'm the same. Pastor Newms: [13:00] So there's the other viewers Phoenix and Zaydiee are. Pastor Bill: [13:03] Just Phoenix, Zaydiee, and Biggs. Pastor Newms: [13:06] I'm not sure why Phoenix felt the need to yell at us, and rain is watching she doesn't count in the viewership because I haven't actually gotten her, twitch login which I should but I haven't yet, but they're upstairs watching I showed them how to log into twitch without let me get to Twitch without logging in and so she's like can I watch like sure. Pastor Bill: [13:41] Snacks, all right well that was my week that was your week, so now it's time for getting to know the pastor's and we are on an even-numbered episode and also, my card last week so aha said it before you did so this week is we pull a card from Pastor Newms is deck so what question are we going to be answer this week in get it's upside down and getting to know the pastor's. What about horses your name what you're just making stuff up what is what was this horse is your name. Pastor Newms: [14:24] It says what I was reading it backwards like if you were reading it the wrong direction and so the questions actually if you, could enter a race horse in the Kentucky Derby what would you name your horse and I'm not going there so we're skipping that card because those names are stupid they always are okay, if you were asked to make a top 10 list of the people you regard as the all-time greatest Americans, whom would you rank third. Pastor Bill: [15:00] Oh my God. Pastor Newms: [15:09] And then it says second and first but I just find it funny that they started with instead of saying who would you name first second and third it was just who would you name third, third favorite American. Pastor Bill: [15:24] Third would be Montezuma. Pastor Newms: [15:28] I guess it didn't it didn't specify United States okay. Pastor Bill: [15:33] Yeah you got North America, Central America, and South America. Pastor Newms: [15:36] You're correct and Phoenix I will invite you to the church's Discord server give me just a second well while we're talking. Pastor Bill: [15:47] Okay so Montezuma. Pastor Newms: [15:48] To do so you're saying Montezuma if I had to list, see I'm bad at picking and listing out, you know all these questions about list or or do or, things like that is is so I'm real bad at it so I'm just going to say my third favorite, of all times is, um just because these two names popped in my head either Stanley or Ryan Reynolds. Pastor Bill: [16:57] Okay so my third was one of zoom on my second would be Sally Fields and my first would be Richard Dean Anderson. Pastor Newms: [17:05] I don't know the first one. Pastor Bill: [17:09] MacGyver. Pastor Newms: [17:11] Oh oh my gosh okay I'll give it to you. Pastor Bill: [17:15] O'Neill on Stargate SG-1. Pastor Newms: [17:17] Yep no I got you okay, for my second and first I'd have to say like man I don't know I'm so bad at picking I've never been able to say like here's my list, like I'm terrible at it I can't make decisions like that, when someone says choose your favorite this I just I almost just want to be like okay I can't answer that I'll die now because that's that's easier than answering the question. I-I really like Einstein, cuz the dude was crazy as a loon. Pastor Bill: [18:12] Going for a German-American. Pastor Newms: [18:14] Yeah I know he didn't technically start here. Pastor Bill: [18:20] But he did get citizenship here. Pastor Newms: [18:21] He did your audio. Pastor Bill: [18:24] Since of thanks for coming. Pastor Newms: [18:26] Your audio got a little fuzzy but that's okay we'll fix it in post. Pastor Bill: [18:31] Well in pose so I'll just use what's recorded on Bertha over here. Pastor Newms: [18:35] Which I'm assuming is not why I'm assuming it's the send that's causing a problem it's just like it's almost like your audio switch devices though so you might want to check to make sure but. Pastor Bill: [18:49] I will double check. Pastor Newms: [18:51] But it's probably just the send the favorite part your top three people from the Americas Zaydiee and and that that would be my number one that would be my number one, what would be Zaydiee, she's my favorite. Pastor Bill: [19:08] Sadie would be your number one. Pastor Newms: [19:10] Sadie if you my favorite American yeah ghost. Pastor Bill: [19:14] I think we were given, gimme answers. Pastor Newms: [19:16] Go and just super stereotypical my wife is my favorite American. Pastor Bill: [19:22] Wife I like my wife I'm not biased or anything she's awesome. Pastor Newms: [19:30] Yeah yeah not biased at all. Pastor Bill: [19:33] Big zhanna Treach says Chuck Norris, and I don't want to roll my eyes because he might actually legitimately mean that because he's not as a lineal, but gen Z and Millennials are all like Chuck Norris hahaha but Biggs isn't even in that generation so he might legitimately. Pastor Newms: [19:56] We actually. Pastor Bill: [19:57] Generally mean Chuck Norris. Pastor Newms: [19:58] A whole lot of Texas Walker Ranger so he could actually mean like because I watched some of the old Chuck Norris movie. Pastor Bill: [20:04] Walker Texas Ranger was legit. Pastor Newms: [20:07] And same with like some of the older movies where it's like oh he could actually break your nose okay cool like oh yeah he worked that guy's arm out by accident oops. Pastor Bill: [20:17] He could he could he was pretty amazing Biggs in follows up by saying Abraham Lincoln as his second person, and Zaydiee says she doesn't think she has any top three favorite Americans family aside. Pastor Newms: [20:37] Zadie is like me she really struggles like my favorite if you want to break her just going in that go in there and be like pick your favorite this, and then just watch her facade crumble as her mind goes 10,000 different places that's a fictional person. Pastor Bill: [20:55] John Hurt. Pastor Newms: [20:56] No that's not someone from America's that's what I meant. Pastor Bill: [20:59] Okay I was like fictional person what. Pastor Newms: [21:02] I will allow Keanu Reeves but John Hurt is British, Bruce Lee I don't know if we can consider him I don't know if he was ever fully. Pastor Bill: [21:16] I don't think he was an American citizen. Pastor Newms: [21:18] I don't think he was Snape yeah try. Pastor Bill: [21:23] Definitely not. Pastor Newms: [21:24] That's not his name but I don't think the Al I don't think Alan Rickman was either I think he was European, but that's okay. Pastor Bill: [21:36] He's a British actor. Pastor Newms: [21:47] The question was American actors or American people which means North South Central America, I would have to say probably my favorite American though would be whoever in my in my past actually came here. Pastor Bill: [22:08] Hahaha the one that blessed you with being born and men in the Americas. Pastor Newms: [22:16] Because. Pastor Bill: [22:22] There's a lot of good countries out there though there's a lot of bad countries but there's a lot of good countries. Pastor Newms: [22:27] And you know mine didn't have to flee their country because they were horse thieves so you know we're it's okay. Pastor Bill: [22:35] I don't know what you're talking about. That was really low I don't care it's not me it was them Zaydiee says been Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, she's a big Supernatural fan, yeah except the new Walker Texas Ranger. Yeah it's pretty bad it's not. Pastor Newms: [23:11] I didn't I didn't want to I didn't want to even try it because it didn't seem like it would be oh wow even Zaydiee says it's hard to watch and that's literally one of her top 10s. Pastor Bill: [23:23] It's not written well for him and they took this concept this iconic concept that Chuck Norris played so well and then try to make it into a modern sitcom, and so it's got this cringe to it. Pastor Newms: [23:41] Mmm, and big said that our ancestors weren't horse thieves that I know of which now worries me a little, no we are definitely not blaming him as an actor some rolls just aren't made for people. Pastor Bill: [24:06] And I understand why he did it you know it makes sense even. Pastor Newms: [24:11] A bad scripts a bad. Pastor Bill: [24:12] Definitely wasn't written with him in mind. Pastor Newms: [24:15] I mean you can't there's been like there's some people like you're like I love this person and you watch this movie you're like they didn't read the script beforehand. Pastor Bill: [24:25] And unfortunately with TV shows there isn't always a script beforehand, there's a pilot and then yeah there's a concept and the writers are writing while you're recording, and you know sometimes they're coming in with updates as you're about to do a thing and you're like can I gotta learn these new lines for the same that I'm already recording that. Pastor Newms: [24:49] One of the one of the weird things though is when you realize some of the actors but you don't I mean some of the writers but you don't realize they're writers like today. Pastor Bill: [24:59] Speaking of riders Russell T Davies is retaking, the Masthead of Doctor Who what why are you being like that. Pastor Newms: [25:17] I don't know how I feel about it a hundred percent. Pastor Bill: [25:21] He wrote for nine he wrote for 10. Pastor Newms: [25:23] I know he's not a bad writer, he's not a bad writer it just it always worries me when someone exits whether by their choice or not and then comes back, because it can cause one of two things it can cause the show to have a visible switch, which it can be super fourth wall breaking, anytime someone changes but when it changes in the changes back it can cause some issues so I don't know how I feel about it until I. Pastor Bill: [26:03] But you do know why they're bringing him back right. Pastor Newms: [26:06] Because the current writers are doing so terrible is what I heard yeah. Pastor Bill: [26:12] No no it's not that you heard it it's that Chris Chibnall who is literally the head of the show right now set it, we are bringing him back hoping he can redo for Doctor Who now what he did in 2005. Pastor Newms: [26:31] Now was it his. Pastor Bill: [26:32] Revitalizing a dead show. Pastor Newms: [26:36] Was it his choice choice to leave. Pastor Bill: [26:38] As far as I know it is yeah. Pastor Newms: [26:40] Okay so maybe it wasn't bad maybe if it was his choice to leave and he doesn't hold any hostilities then maybe it'll be okay I just I've seen. Pastor Bill: [26:48] You find out later. Pastor Newms: [26:50] Yeah and. Pastor Bill: [26:52] Constant left and everything it was and they said oh he was playing you know to introduce regeneration to a new people and then later it came out that you know it didn't go down that way and. Pastor Newms: [27:07] But I was watching a particular show and this particular show does now they haven't always but recently they started in the last season at the end of the show the writers for that show make comments on the show and one of the writers, showed up and I went. I didn't realize that she wrote for the show like I love her comedy I love watching her do other things that she's done some of her DND stuff. Pastor Bill: [27:38] And what is her name. Pastor Newms: [27:41] I don't know that's yeah I don't I don't know. Pastor Bill: [27:47] Very much the same way I'll see it recognize it remember their work and then 10 minutes later I'll be like I don't know what that name was. Pastor Newms: [27:56] I can't even remember the main writer of that show and it's his production company. Pastor Bill: [28:02] I just now we were talking the second ago I had to go look up the names of Supreme Court Justices, just in case I got asked who's your number four so I could remember what the guys name is that is my number four so I had to go look up what his name is because I can't remember the name, I remember some of the opinions he wrote in decisions from when he was sitting in the Supreme Court but I can't remember his name. Pastor Newms: [28:27] I can never remember actress I have to IMDb a movie I can remember and hope I remember that name, and then get to the person there have been times I've had to IMDb another actor because I couldn't remember the name of the movie to then look up the act the person in the movie to then go look up with the. Pastor Bill: [28:47] You're like an oak I know Kevin Bacon's and that one movie with him wait that doesn't narrow it down, Samuel Jackson was in it no that doesn't narrow it down even. Pastor Newms: [28:57] This happened this happened to us the other day where we were watching Deep Space Nine and I was like is that person that person and I couldn't remember either person's name, and you're like yes so. Pastor Bill: [29:15] Is that that person from the Orville with the you know the lady yes that is the doctor from the Orville yes. Pastor Newms: [29:21] Which is supposed to be coming back very very soon on Hulu because it is now a Hulu exclusive but it's supposed to be coming back there supposedly finished the next season which. Pastor Bill: [29:32] I should I should hope so I mean he he was literally at one of the ground-floor people that got Hulu started so like if his own show can't find an exclusive home on Hulu. Pastor Newms: [29:46] Well it was when he did that, Orville I mean Hulu and fox worked extremely well together and all of his other shows were on Fox but I guess Fox decided they didn't, deal with the Orville right now even though they had ordered the run and paid for it to be done but because they're the major shareholder for Hulu it was like I will just put it there let's be honest that's where all, we're watching it anyway none of no nerd. Pastor Bill: [30:20] We're almost everybody was watching it just be honest. Pastor Newms: [30:23] No one's no nerd watches live TV we just don't like your sports people do your people who need the news. Pastor Bill: [30:30] Most of us who watch TV shows like you know the actual demographic they're going for for shows like the Orville we wait until the seasons done, and then binge the whole thing like, when when you when you're really sister dreaming and you're like we're going to release one episode every week until it's done and I'm like well then you're going to not see me in any of the viewership numbers until you've done releasing them all, just release them all and let me watch them anyway, current Contracting is tricky as far as residuals on streaming for paying actors and for paying production companies and until they update the way they contract for things like that, we won't see a lot of just dumps on to streaming. Pastor Newms: [31:29] But but we're seeing a lot more because the Actors Guild's and stuff are forcing it because they know it's the future because no one, especially Our Generation and especially the generation below us just don't even. Pastor Bill: [31:43] We'll see the thinking the thinking in the past was and they crunch actual written thinking about live TV if a show yeah if a show releases, then it can charge a certain amount for commercials and beginning and then as the buzz builds, it can can charge more for commercials which then is more Revenue which then puts more money in the actors Pockets so actors did make more money in the long run that way but now with streaming you've either got commercial free, or you've got commercials which you know there are some Hulu people that don't have the plus program they watch commercials even when they're streaming, and it ends up being just the opposite if you make this current generation wait the viewer numbers go down, as the season progresses not up because everything is so fast and available and it's right in front of our faces and, yeah so it just it doesn't really work for their benefit anymore to release them slow and drawn out. Pastor Newms: [32:52] So I'm mute myself when I take a drink from that particular drink because it's very loud. Pastor Bill: [32:57] It's awful it's awful. Pastor Newms: [32:58] And the funny thing is is when were on teams Discord doesn't care discords like cool you muted yourself that was nice, but teams is like hurry we can't hear you but we know you're trying to talk. Pastor Bill: [33:16] It's the big thing pops up. Pastor Newms: [33:18] And so because I have to capture your whole screen it actually happens on the stream to it's like I can't hear you you're like you're not supposed to um so I try to dismiss it as quick as I can but that just started happening again. Pastor Bill: [33:32] Oh man that's. Pastor Newms: [33:34] Week so I don't know what so. Pastor Bill: [33:38] People watching the live it's like we can't hear you we are not supposed to hear me I'm just watching a live show I don't know why why do you want to hear me. Pastor Newms: [33:44] I'm drinking a drink. Pastor Bill: [33:48] All right now we're really warmed up at this. Pastor Newms: [33:52] We're ten minutes past warmed up. Pastor Bill: [33:54] We're like well warm up is a feeling not a Time. Pastor Newms: [33:57] But let's be honest I mean there are times where we deserve to have Grace in the amount of time that we a lot for things and as, people will forgive us for running over in our warm up. Pastor Bill: [34:20] This silence is me contemplating going back to a one House show. Pastor Newms: [34:28] Come back we're good. Pastor Bill: [34:33] As I said we're going to be looking at Hebrews chapter 4 and if you want to turn there or queue there in your device, let's start in verse 14 of Hebrews chapter 4, "Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the son of God, let us hold fast to our confession, for we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin, therefore let us approach the throne of grace with boldness so that we may receive mercy and find Grace, to help us in time of need." Thoughts Pastor Newms? Pastor Newms: I've never liked that word. Pastor Bill: Confession? Pastor Newms: [35:44] Yeah so confession. Pastor Bill: [35:46] Statement of the mouth. Pastor Newms: [35:48] Um acknowledgement, profession Pro like you've professed something confession nowadays often means something different than what this word implies the KJV actually, uses. Pastor Bill: [36:05] Translated profession. Pastor Newms: [36:06] Profession yeah the Nasby and the CSB both do confession but it's homo Logan Logan Logan whatever. Pastor Bill: [36:18] Homo rgr. Pastor Newms: [36:22] That's what I said, which is acknowledgement or con. Pastor Bill: [36:29] Mmm. Pastor Newms: [36:32] Fashion and professed, what is I've read the word, I didn't think about reading the phonetic under it that would make more sense to try to read since I don't read so well but you know it works this is why I let you deal with the Greek homie, tell me that don't look like tell me that look like home home or login. Pastor Bill: [37:05] I don't know where you put it in there. Pastor Newms: [37:08] I'm not login. Pastor Bill: [37:09] You said homo login mmm. Pastor Newms: [37:11] Yeah like log in oh that's an a that's not an end, oh yeah I don't know man but no I, because at first I was like wait hold fast our confession but it's confessing the grace of GI okay I'm with us again. Pastor Bill: [37:34] Yeah it's a confession of Covenant it's, specifically it's it's it's from the word Hummel ugh vo at oh sorry oh almost log oh, Elmo low cheat IMA Logie gfo. Pastor Newms: [37:58] I said it so bad he could not read the phonetics that's plainly written on the screen. Pastor Bill: [38:03] I can't even read the phonetics anymore my brain is broken at this point I'm looking at the screen going I know how phonetics work I can't read this phonetics right now anyway it's it's a confession of your relationship but that's not where, are at the moment one of the one of the things that jumped out at me that I want to just hit on right quick is in verse 15 right. We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses but one who has been tempted in every way as we are yet without sin. So when you mmm when you feel tempted to do something that you know is feel like is suspect is wrong, right and we're not talking about oh so and so said this was wrong and and I don't think it is but when you feel tempted to do something that's wrong, think about the fact that Jesus also faced the same, now it may not have been exactly the same thing because Jesus didn't have cars TVs, you know computers so it may not be the exact same thing but the base of that Temptation the actual root of the Temptation how you apply the temptation to other situations, Jesus faced those same type of Temptations you know Temptations to steal temptation to kill temptation to, covet your neighbor's whatever you know I'm trying to tie these back into phrases that the Bible uses that we still face, but we might not see them the same way you know my only using the same scenarios. Pastor Newms: [40:01] Like my neighbor who's got the car that I really really want and when you press on the gas pedal it just goes vroom vroom and I want it so bad and, it's not mine but every time I every time she starts her car and I'm in my office I'm like so so pretty, I want one so bad now that's you know there is a line between I will do anything to get it and, true sinful covetousness but it sounds so pretty I get I get real close with that, Challenger next door of coveting my wife my neighbor's horse well that's what it is it's her horsepower. Pastor Bill: [40:44] It is her horsepower yeah yeah. Pastor Newms: [40:46] You sound so pretty. Pastor Bill: [40:47] All right so we're 16 therefore let us approach the throne of grace, with boldness so that we may receive mercy and find Grace to help us in time of, so often the terms mercy and Grace are used interchangeably, in modern vernacular but not so much in biblical vernacular. Pastor Newms: [41:21] No they they mean very different things. Pastor Bill: [41:24] These are two very different things right so, we're receiving Mercy what is Mercy. Pastor Newms: [41:40] I just clicked away from the exact definition. Pastor Bill: [41:44] In your words what is Mercy. Pastor Newms: [41:49] Um being merciful isn't the correct answer to what is Mercy. Pastor Bill: [41:57] No it isn't that. Pastor Newms: [41:58] Showing compassion being like, merciful is the only word coming to my mind and it's not it's not correct but, showing kindness showing compassion to people even when they don't deserve it. Pastor Bill: [42:21] When they don't deserve it, that's mercy and that's the key to Mercy Mercy exists when you don't deserve it if you deserve it it's not Mercy. It's no mercy right right and what is Grace. Make it easier for you we have um never credit card and your bill is due every month what is a grace period. Pastor Newms: [43:10] Is there withholding of the punishment. Pastor Bill: [43:12] It's a withholding of punishment within a certain window right. But Grace exists in Windows they always do, right there's graciousness they have such Grace and you know bestowing Grace, so basically Grace is this distance from punishment, and we come to the throne of grace, we come to the throne that is just tensed distance from punishment so that we receive Mercy, but we haven't earned, you haven't earned this Mercy not that we learned torture. Right but that we haven't learned the mercy, and we find there when we receive this Mercy we find there this grace, and so I always use the analogy of the highway the Mountain Highway right so someone built a Mountain Highway, and people were, hitting these curves too hard and flying off the mountain and dime so something had to be done, so somebody came along and they built a guardrail now what happens. Pastor Newms: [45:09] Depending on how fast you are going you might get saved by the guardrail. Pastor Bill: [45:14] You might or your plow right through it but you can see the Edge from a distance now right this is what God did when he gave the law, all I can see the edge, but the law is not going to stop me from going over the edge and the edge is still there all the law did was make it easier for me to see The Edge, The Edge was already there but now I can see the edge, Mercy is after you've gone over the edge the emergency responders coming and pulling your busted but back up onto the road. And that's what Jesus did, he came and pulled our busted butts back onto the road when we fall off when we fell off if we're all in a bus together and that bus goes down the road and it falls over, this is what Jesus did he when he got down there and he pulled us back up onto the road and now we have a decision, we can stay on the road or we can jump back in the ditch now the analogy is kind of getting muddy but let's get to the grace part, imagine someone came along and said there's a lot of people dying on this road what if we dig into the mountain, and we create more Lanes so if people want to drive next to the guardrail they can, but if they wanted to distance themselves from the guardrail and drive over there where it's safer they also can, that's Grace choosing to drive over there away from the guardrail, is there anything wrong with driving next to the guardrail no not if you're being responsible. Right, this is Grace these extra Lanes all these extra Lanes this is your choice you've been given Grace you exist in Grace, and you choose am I going to drive over there and my going to drive over here, it doesn't matter which part of that distance from the Intermountain you're driving you're still driving on the road within Grace, and what happens when you do plow through the guardrail Mr. Mercy is down there, taking you back up Dustin you off putting you back on the road go in hey this isn't a problem this we dealt with this we dealt with this problem, and now we're all driving down the road under grace we have to decide now, what destination are we driving tour. There's only two destinations faith or not safe. Right I use it a lot. Pastor Newms: [49:08] You do I don't a hundred percent agree, the window is is freaking out and it's making my eyes. Pastor Bill: [49:42] Come on man you got like five minutes. Pastor Newms: [49:44] I know I know so for for me you know Grace is always been, you know God gave us the law we know what the law is we some of us, we know what Sin is Sin is missing the mark not being perfect there are things that are in the law that are sin there are things that are, just out of the law and then still sin you know we have all these things and I think that, the grace is that, ability that God has through Jesus what you know him covering us is that covering that we have so that we don't, receive the eternal punishments for sin which, works on your analogy but I think takes it a step further that the people who built the highway also included awnings to protect from hail. Pastor Bill: [50:59] You mean you mean you mean fire and brimstone. Pastor Newms: [51:02] Hail hail hail hail hail hail mean. Pastor Bill: [51:04] Sulfur fire Brimstone blood big says. Pastor Newms: [51:10] I got well Bloods the covering. Pastor Bill: [51:13] Oh oh oh. Pastor Newms: [51:14] I got I got scolded earlier because I said high knees you know what high needs help with that. Pastor Bill: [51:20] And you meant high knees. Pastor Newms: [51:22] Jaime's yeah he kicking kick you know hitting your hands with your knees high knees and and my wife and Phoenix both looked at me and went, how's her heinie going to help and I'm like no no doing high knees How would. Pastor Bill: [51:42] What are you gonna do to the hiney. Pastor Newms: [51:44] What are you wanting or nine-year-old to do, and I'm like no like when you standing you do like this and you touch your high knees yeah. Pastor Bill: [51:55] Yeah yeah. Pastor Newms: [51:57] Up to Country, hail can mean both both the physical and the spiritual so to me that's, always what Grace has been I get the guardrail I understand, and agree with you I just think it takes it that step farther of that covering us from the Eternal punishment which I know you, equate to Mercy as well and sanctification and when you get to the end that's when those decisions are made they're really again. Pastor Bill: [52:31] They're not interchangeable the words aren't interchangeable but they're really Tangled. Pastor Newms: [52:35] I made it I made it 57 and a half minutes before I say it, English is a bad language so because of that the. Pastor Bill: [52:47] Surprised you made it that far. Pastor Newms: [52:48] Get fuzzy, but I think that that to me that's the grace is that that covering of you know, certain amounts of our sin has consequences you know as Paul says you know anything is permissible but not everything is uplifting or healthier I can't move which word to you, beneficial thank you so there are consequences for things not everything uplifts you but Grace helps cover some of that, and allows us to move through it now. Pastor Bill: [53:26] But not not physically. Pastor Newms: [53:28] Not physically now I will say in that there is this concept that is taught in some, modern churches very very modern and some old of hyper Grace yeah. Pastor Bill: [53:42] Grace as I would shocking about hyper Grace. Pastor Newms: [53:45] Which you know as we believe here. Pastor Bill: [53:49] In this analogy. Pastor Newms: [53:51] In the. Pastor Bill: [53:52] Somebody filled the valley with concrete. Pastor Newms: [53:54] And there's no way to run off the road the hole. Pastor Bill: [53:58] No way there are other. Pastor Newms: [53:59] Abel. Pastor Bill: [54:01] It's all concrete and it's inside of a giant warehouse now and we're all running circles on the left. Pastor Newms: [54:07] So Pastor Bill: [54:08] Hyper Grace. Pastor Newms: [54:09] We don't as as myself, and I know Pastor Bill so I could technically say the brand Manifesto as a whole does not condone hyper Grace of there is no such thing as consequences and God will cover all of our, consequences both now later forever nothing hurts your spirit nothing hurts your soul nothing has any effect. Pastor Bill: [54:37] And we see evidence here of Jesus needing to wipe away every tear in the end when we're in our spiritual bodies and it's like well what are we crying about, did you miss the bay my part, did you miss the Judgment part where your where your judge your spirit is judged and it carries all that stuff with did you miss that part like. Pastor Newms: [55:02] Great Grace has him looking at us and going you messed up a lot but, you did I like you made the right decisions in the end you messed up a lot o and. Pastor Bill: [55:17] If my if my son came to me and he said I've been hiding it but I like men, he would say boys he would say men Grace would look back and say okay, it doesn't change anything you still have the security of your bed you still live in my home you still eat my food you still have my love that's Grace. Mercy, is when he goes out and he gets some girl pregnant he comes home and says I messed up I got so and so Pregnant Mercy says all right you and I were team, this doesn't change anything we're going to deal with the consequences we together that's Mercy. Pastor Newms: [56:26] Interloping interlocking inner weaving of you know the terms of grace and mercy and sanctification in just not justification, not salvation not sanctification, me moving my hands up and down or not going to help me find it so I don't know why I'm doing it. Pastor Bill: [56:56] Jurisprudence I don't know where you going with this. Pastor Newms: [56:59] Man I don't know I don't either but there's so much that it in your intertwines that it becomes very hard to separate them all into Concepts sometimes, and so but yeah I think that's a really big deal of grace and mercy and we have to continue to show it. Pastor Bill: [57:33] Not just to others, one of the steps to loving yourself is allowing yourself some Grace and some mercy, continue with what you were going to stay there. Pastor Newms: [57:49] I don't need that today I don't need you preaching at me while we're sitting here I thank you so I was I was in the the the family bible study this week and, the the lady that's teaching it. Pastor Bill: [58:08] Are you sure you want to talk about this all right. Pastor Newms: [58:10] Yeah I do I do. Pastor Bill: [58:13] I'm not gonna stop you I just want to make sure you thought this through. Pastor Newms: [58:16] Not someone in the family I don't mean like. Pastor Bill: [58:18] No just the whole topic just the whole situation I just want to make. Pastor Newms: [58:24] I know what I'm doing um if I could. Pastor Bill: [58:27] What I'm afraid of. Pastor Newms: [58:28] If I go too far I'll hear about it Saturday jerk family but she brought up a verse and was talking about this particular verse, and then she, jumped ahead and used another verse but the verses in between the two verses that she used see I handled it the verses in between talked about how we have to use gentleness, with others, outside of and it was really funny because you know it's one of those moments where when you read it you're like oh that's what I've been basing some things on because the language and how it's used I'm like, this is what I've said to people I forgot we're like you last week we were like I found this thing that I've based this huge part of my life on it I don't getting remember it for me this is this part in 2nd Timothy 2:20, for is where this particular thing starts so that second Timothy 2:24 because I know I put a lot of extra hose in that. Pastor Bill: [59:45] Which says. Pastor Newms: [59:46] Which says the Lord's servant must not quarrel, but be gentle to everyone able to teach and patient instructing his opponents with gentleness perhaps God will grant them repentance leading them to the knowledge of Truth, they may come to their senses and escape the Trap Of The Devil who has taken them captive to do his will and, you know there's a lot of extra words in there than I don't you know aren't the point. I was making they're all important but not where I was going which is you know, we have to when we are instructing or when we are preaching or when we are helping people we have to do it with gentleness and it just brings to mind, so often there are people who don't, we've all dealt with it to hell fire and brimstone preachers, in the Evangelical Community now I'm not saying preaching hell is bad because hell is a place you have to preach it but the whole like, you know taking it that step too far, where you're like n because you've ever sinned you're gonna you know and Europe you're this and you're that and attacking the person, when they take that step past talking about the wages of sin is death when they take that step past it and start talking about the person and attacking people that don't agree with them, so we have you know there's a lot of ministry that happens to people who know the Bible. And have walked away from it their teachings there upbringings or never accepted it because, found flaws over taught other things and so often Christians. Pastor Bill: [1:01:52] Let's back up they didn't find flaws with the scripture they didn't find Falls with Jesus, well they might have some flaws with the Bible because a lot of people have a hard time understanding how things tie in and what things culturally okay but the main thing that people have had a problem with, is what's being taught in the church that doesn't reflect. Pastor Newms: [1:02:20] Right often yes so but in that you get these people that, don't use gentleness they they there's this particular person I'm not going to name names because I won't speak ill of a pastor in a forum like this but this particular person, has made national headlines with some of the things he said and done. He's here in this area where I live because I know him from high school that's beside the point, he very much attacks, people groups and people around him as opposed to dealing with people that disagree with him with gentleness if you disagree with this person or people like him, you don't get gentleness now that being said this is something I struggle with, Pastor Bill can tell you on multiple occasions when we have been dealing with people that I disagree with including Pastor Bill I do not, approach it with gentleness all the time I tell my children often Daddy has one emotion and it tends to be anger, and so once I get to a certain point it's just sorry everyone's so. I love this verse and I've always loved his thought processes of of as we talked about so much faith hope and love with the show love through gentleness when we're dealing with people who are our opponents, people that disagree with us and I love what it says in there, perhaps God will then will grant them repentance leading them to knowledge of the truth, it's not up to us to grab someone by the shirt drag them to the water, when in this case water is Jesus and shove their head in it and water boredom to the point where they believe what we're trying to teach, harsh as Paul who tend to say things very very black and white was like we do have to be gentle though and sometimes you're like, is this the same dude who said like other things. Pastor Bill: [1:05:01] Is this the same dude who at the stoning of Stephen volunteered to hold people's coats so that he could get a good seat to watch. Pastor Newms: [1:05:10] Yeah. Pastor Bill: [1:05:11] And serve the people who were stoning this man to death is this the same person who crucified Christians upside down at this the same person ooh. Pastor Newms: [1:05:21] It shows his maturity as he aged, in leading Timothy as Timothy was taking on a mantle of being in leadership it's very interesting to watch him go now when you're talking to people that don't like you you have to be nice about it and, I'm sure this is one of those things that Peter Peter was like I don't agree with Paul all the time because in my mind that something people. Pastor Bill: [1:05:46] So some of those things that Paul teaches are hard to understand. Pastor Newms: [1:05:52] But I struggle with this of being gentle but this is where I get the idea of friendship evangelism as opposed to, now I'm not saying street preaching is bad because I've done it too but the style of Hellfire and brimstone what we all know when I say that term preaching. Pastor Bill: [1:06:14] Yeah street preaching without compassion is bad. Pastor Newms: [1:06:19] And so when that something that it hit me this week and then you were like we're going to talk about Grace and I'm like I'm talking about gentleness just wrong, and so it was just interesting that this got brought up because it wasn't even something that, I was in the study I was working on it was around it and it was funny because someone else in the Bible study one of my family members brought up this passage also and I was like oh that's so great to hear you say that because that means you did the same thing I did where she said read this verse of this verse and you read all of these verses and went huh and so I thought that was really cool also and set, but it was just you know I wanted to bring that up, the whole thing about showing Grace is not just we get Grace from God we have to show Grace to those around us also, because we should and then, wow interesting nope not going to go there. Pastor Bill: [1:07:41] Okay. Pastor Newms: [1:07:45] But yeah the KJV says in meekness which is interesting. Pastor Bill: [1:07:54] Speak softly but carry a big stick. Pastor Newms: [1:07:56] And the Nasby doesn't do instructing they say correcting so I find that to be that that even adds more hmm, to what I just I just I was like what's the Greek word that they're using their for gentleness and it's the same one that can be used for meekness in the same one that can be, anyway I just I wanted to end with that just because be nice to people please because, Paul said to. Pastor Bill: [1:08:28] It's almost like you're saying allow them some Grace. Pastor Newms: [1:08:35] Days what I'm saying is I said that. Pastor Bill: [1:08:39] He said that, alright so that was great if you want to join us when we record this live on Sunday evenings we do that every Sunday evening when we do it, if you show up and we're not here then we're probably not doing it that week don't worry you'll catch up. Pastor Newms: [1:08:58] Or if you're like Biggs and you show up 1 minute early we're just running behind. Pastor Bill: [1:09:04] What is running back so it's every Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. Central Standard Time or Central Daylight time either way it'll be 6:30 by the clock where I live, that we go live and you can join us on Twitch, I almost said Periscope because restream was talking about Periscope this week it's twitch Facebook and YouTube yeah restream was like periscopes officially going away so you should add Twitter, to your streaming and I was like Twitter No thank you, I'm fine with the static posts that we post to Twitter I really don't want to go live video to Twitter that's not. Pastor Newms: [1:09:48] Like garbage people I don't like Twitter I've never liked. Pastor Bill: [1:09:53] The land it's the land of post Malone sorry you said garbage people and so that's who I. Pastor Newms: [1:10:01] Post Malone is not garbage people, I like post Malone. Pastor Bill: [1:10:05] I'm aware that you like garbage people it's okay. Pastor Newms: [1:10:08] He likes my favorite restaurant and I agree. Pastor Bill: [1:10:11] Fine there was a whole series of of dolls made about him when he was a baby, that's okay they were called the Garbage Pail Kids anyway so you can join us on Sunday evenings. Pastor Newms: [1:10:27] When I come back into town I'm going to go to mine and post Malone's favorite restaurant without you you're not invited. Pastor Bill: [1:10:32] No I want to go to. Pastor Newms: [1:10:34] Now you don't get to you don't get to go to the restaurant where post Malone has a picture with the owner you don't get to go. Pastor Bill: [1:10:40] You you don't get to tell me when and where I can't go if I just happened to show up at the same time that you're there and sit at the same table as you do there's nothing you can do about it. Pastor Newms: [1:10:52] The worst part everyone out there in in everywhere land, is he's going to go at some point to my favorite restaurant because he can and I can't and I'm going to get a picture of just the buffet and him going so I can. Pastor Bill: [1:11:11] That's probably going to happen this. Pastor Newms: [1:11:13] I can foresee it the neck. Pastor Bill: [1:11:15] Just because you said that. Pastor Newms: [1:11:16] Wednesday when you're in North Richland Hills and I don't get to go to. Pastor Bill: [1:11:19] So like I was saying, join us on Sunday evenings from record live so you can be part of the conversation in the chat and why are you pouting now. Pastor Newms: [1:11:31] Cuz I don't have a Mongolian restaurant here and now I'm depressed in one Mongolian. Pastor Bill: [1:11:37] I saw I don't know if this is true but I saw a infographic this week and it was talking about populations, and it asserted the claim that the population of Tennessee is smaller than the population of Dallas and Fort Worth combined. Pastor Newms: [1:11:58] If you're talking about the whole Metroplex I could honestly agree with that because there's only. Pastor Bill: [1:12:03] Of Tennessee. Pastor Newms: [1:12:04] There's only three big cities in Tennessee. Pastor Bill: [1:12:08] That is mind-boggling to me. Pastor Newms: [1:12:10] No makes perfect sense to me I've lived. Pastor Bill: [1:12:12] And it was like here's all the states that are smaller than the DFW metroplex and I'm not kidding you there's only like four or five states that have populations bigger, then the two cities in Northern Central Texas. Pastor Newms: [1:12:30] I had a conversation with someone they're like the job market about the same for Nashville and and DFW and I'm like you don't understand the scale of DFW obviously but. Pastor Bill: [1:12:40] Obviously yeah all right I blew my mind I was like Shirley. Pastor Newms: [1:12:46] Big says five so I think he might have seen the same infographic and he's saying you're wrong on. Pastor Bill: [1:12:51] I'd have you know what I was pretty clear on the disambiguation of the number that I was using with the. Pastor Newms: [1:12:59] Just saying Biggs called you a liar. Pastor Bill: [1:13:02] The relative or and you know the tone of my voice. Pastor Newms: [1:13:07] Biggs said you're a liar. Pastor Bill: [1:13:09] Okay he's welcome to his opinion so, come and join us on Sunday night see I keep trying to get through this thing where I'm inviting people to join us and we keep getting sidetracked come and join us when we record live if you prefer to listen to this on the podcast wherever you're getting your podcasts, more power to you I'd like to hear feedback if you have feedback you can send it to me email it to me or go find me on, Tick-Tock or or when the new Wisdom app drops later this month you can go find me on there or, whatever go find Pastor Newms on Twitch and bother him all right so we love you guys have a great week. 1. Instagram Launches Reels Ads - If you have been following our #TWIMshow, you know that I had predicted that Reels Ads will be coming on the day we covered IG Reels. Then they tested Reels Ads in select countries. Well IG Reels Ads are available globally as of June 16, 2021. According to IG, “ Reels is the best place on Instagram to reach people who don't follow you and a growing global stage where brands and creators can be discovered by anyone. These ads will help businesses reach greater audiences, allowing people to discover inspiring new content from brands and creators.”Reels ads will be full screen and vertical, similar to ads in Stories, and will appear in between individual Reels. As with regular Reels content, these ads will loop and can be up to 30 seconds. People can comment, like, view, save and share Reels ads.2. Group Fundraisers on Instagram - Instagram has added a group fundraising capability that allows people to raise money for a social cause, and every donation goes directly to the nonprofit. As explained by Instagram: "Offline fundraising is often a group activity, from things like walk-a-thons, to bake sales, to concerts, and we wanted to bring that same sense of community to Instagram fundraisers so people can activate together around a single cause. 100% of the funds go directly to the nonprofit you're raising money for, too."When you set up a fundraiser on Instagram, you will be able to invite people to join the effort and have more people promote it. The question is, will this replace GoFundMe or be an addition to GoFundMe? Listen to the podcast to find our take on this feature.3. Google Launches Search Console Insights - Google is introducing a new tool called Search Console Insights which is designed to help site owners better understand their audience. SCI combines data from both Search Console and Google Analytics in an effort to make it easy to understand content performance. The user interface is pretty simple to understand which means that even novice users would not face all that much trouble while attempting to wrap their heads around it. Data in Search Console Insights will help site owners answer question such as: What are your best performing pieces of content, and which ones are trending? How do people discover your content across the web? What do people search for on Google before they visit your content? Which article refers users to your website and content? 4. Shopify's Shop Pay is Now Available to Online Stores Who Don't Use Shopify - On Jun 15, 20 Shopify announced that they have made their one-click checkout service available to all merchants on Facebook and Google, even if they don't use Shopify. Starting with Facebook and Instagram later this summer and followed by Google in late 2021, Shop Pay will be available to more than one million merchants across both platforms—even if they don't use Shopify's online store. Each day, more than 1.8 billion people log on to Facebook and a billion shopping sessions take place across Google. By bringing Shop Pay to all merchants regardless of the commerce platform they use, they are making an industry-leading checkout more accessible to independent brands at a time when finding and converting customers has never been more important. The merchant benefits of Shop Pay include: Faster, more efficient, and secure payments: Checkout on Shop Pay within the Shopify platform is 70% faster than a typical checkout, with a 1.72x higher conversion rate. This means fewer abandoned carts and increased conversion. Convenient order tracking and management: With 430+ million orders tracked over 450 billion miles, our global order tracking service enables consumers to track all of their important purchases, receive updates, and manage orders with Shop, Shopify's shopping assistant. Carbon emissions offset on every delivery: One of the first carbon-neutral ways to pay, Shop Pay offsets 100% of the delivery emissions for every order. 5. Shopify's New Feature Will Help Your Store To Become More SEO Friendly - Shopify store owners are now able to edit their robots.txt file, which gives owners more control over how search engines crawl their site. Per Tobi Lutke, Shopify CEO, all shopify stores start with the same robots.txt, which the company says works for most sites, but now the file can be edited through the robots.txt.liquid theme template. Now you can make the following changes to the robots.txt file: Allow or disallow certain URLs from being crawled Add crawl-delay rules for certain crawlers Add extra sitemap URLs Block certain crawlers P.S: Shopify recommends using Liquid to add or remove directives from the robots.txt.liquid template, as it preserves the ability to keep the file automatically updated.6. YouTube Bans 4 Business Types From Advertising on its Masthead - Google will no longer allow certain types of ads on YouTube's masthead. In case, you are unfamiliar with Google's Lingo and are unsure what a masthead is then YouTube's masthead advertising unit is ad appearing at the top of the YouTube home page. Per Google, “This is a video ad that appears at the top of the YouTube homepage. The YouTube Home feed is a very important destination for viewers, and the Masthead ad allows you to be first and foremost in that home experience. Buying a Masthead ad means targeted reach across a campaign with budget and frequency controls. Masthead ads bought are available on YouTube across desktop, mobile apps, and the YouTube app for TV.”The affected verticals that are known so far are: Alcohol sales Gambling Prescription drugs Election and political ads In my opinion, this makes sense as YT is gaining popularity in mainstream (big screen TV). 7. New Ad Formats in Microsoft Advertising - Microsoft is introducing new ad formats called Tours and Activities that they say will be unique to the platform (at least for now until this format gets copied by another platform). The ads are made in real-time by the Microsoft's AI (thus no keywords are not required) for relevant queries using unique feed files that include images, price, reviews and videos. Advertisers in the U.S. and UK can sign up for the open beta by filling out this form or getting in touch with their Microsoft Advertising representative. You can learn more about the required and optional attributes at Microsoft Advertising's Tours and Activities ads help page.8. Integrating Your Podcast to Your Facebook Page - Facebook is providing podcasters with more ways to promote their content by connecting it back to their Facebook page. After you connect your podcast's RSS feed into your Facebook page, facebook will automatically generate connected, playable News Feed posts all episodes published moving forward. And users will be able to listen to every episode directly on Facebook. And Facebook is also planning to add a feature that'll allow listeners to create clips from their favorite shows.9. Facebook Adds New Features to Group Admin - Facebook adds new tools for Facebook Group Admins, including improved comment moderation processes , ‘Conflict Alerts,' and an updated overview dashboard that will highlight group tasks that require attention. They also made the Admin Home customizable that admins can tailor to their needs. The comment moderation feature will enable group admins to set up their own criteria around what they want to moderate, and even automatically moderate both posts and comments based on these rules. For example, admins can setup a rule to automatically decline comments that include a link to a third-party site, which could be good for branded communities and avoid conflicts with competing options.Group admins will also be able to restrict people who don't qualify to participate based on a range of options (including how long they've had a Facebook account and/or how long they have been a member of the group), while the tool will also provide access to Facebook's advanced anti-spam tools. ‘Conflict Alerts' will use Facebook's AI to detect and notify admins when there may be contentious and unhealthy conversations in their group, so that they can take action as needed. And then admins can take actions such as temporarily limit how often specific group members can comment, and control how often comments can be made on certain posts that admins select. Other things Facebook added are: a.) new overall management and insight tools for groups, including new member summaries, which provide an overview of each group member's activity, b.) a new appeal process for group admins, covering content that they or other admins have posted, or that they have approved from members.c.) ability tag group rules within comments and posts for clarity, while group members will also be able to tag specific group rules when they report posts and comments to adminsd.) and finally, making pinned comments and admin announcements notifications available in all groups.10. Facebook Launches Program to Provide Opportunities for Independent Artists - Facebook's Independent Artist Program will help unsigned musicians earn money from their music by making their content available on Facebook and Instagram through Facebook's partner platforms DistroKid and TuneCore. Facebook will also provide data insights to help artists track their content performance over time. Remember, back in April we covered on our TWIMShow how TikTok provided similar opportunities to independent artists through their partnership with UnitedMasters.
Instagram explains its algorithm, Facebook Watch coming next year, TikTok gets positive, YouTube bans alcohol, gambling, and political ads on its Masthead placements, and more.

From the publisher: In 1971, Robin Green had an interview with Jann Wenner at the offices Rolling Stone magazine. She had just moved to Berkeley, California, a city that promised "Good Vibes All-a Time." Those days, job applications asked just one question, "What are your sun, moon and rising signs?" Green thought she was interviewing for a clerical job like the other girls in the office, a "real job." Instead, she was hired as a journalist. With irreverent humor and remarkable nerve, Green spills stories of sparring with Dennis Hopper on a film junket in the desert, scandalizing fans of David Cassidy and spending a legendary evening on a water bed in Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s dorm room. In the seventies, Green was there as Hunter S. Thompson crafted Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and now, with a distinctly gonzo female voice, she reveals her side of that tumultuous time in America. Brutally honest and bold, Green reveals what it was like to be the first woman granted entry into an iconic boys' club. Pulling back the curtain on Rolling Stone magazine in its prime, The Only Girl is a stunning tribute to a bygone era and a publication that defined a generation. Martin’s interview with Robin Green was recorded on October 2, 2018.

Our 27th episode is recorded from Jordan’s 8th-floor, luxury apartment in North Olmsted! With a view of the gorgeous North Olmsted skyline, which features Great Northern Mall and Walmart, the boys started the episode off discussing the beer of the week, which was Sibling Revelry’s Ohio Native Festbier. The first topic of the night, our Top Five, deals with heartbreaking sports memories. Jordan, who’s not a native Clevelander, focuses on Houston teams and Tottenham Hotspur, while Jimmy and Dan give their top five saddest Cleveland sports moments. Buckle down, folks — this one gets really depressing really quickly. We then transition into the LOTL Poll of the Week, which has to do with the Browns: do you think the Brown’s look better or worse after the first two games? Around 80 percent of Facebook and Twitter followers said they feel better about the Brown’s situation after two weeks. After that, LOTL reviews the agonizing Browns’ loss to the Saints on Sunday, the disaster of Zane Gonzalez, the Josh Gordon trade, and then they preview the Browns – Jets game on Thursday night (9/20/18). We conclude by previewing some fun events in Cleveland coming up soon, including IngenuityFest, Ohio City Street Festival, and the Solon Fall Festival. As always, follow us on social media (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram at @thelotlpodcast) and give us suggestions for places to eat, drink, and hangout in Cleveland. We’ve worked hard to have our design projects published nationally and regionally many times over. To us, it’s a stamp of approval from the highest level of our peers – the editors of the magazines we covet. Our first national publication was a 6 page spread in Southern Lady Magazine. We were (and still are) so proud of that feature! Our next feature is coming up in August/September issue of Southern Cottage which is published by Engaged Media, Inc. To be totally honest though, we’ve never received a single new client from being published, but it has certainly built our credibility in the eyes of those prospective clients that care about that kind of thing. So consider this what we call a “teaching episode” for our fellow designers and new designers as we share what we’ve learned along the way on HOW TO GET PUBLSIHED. 2. DESIGN WITH AN EYE FOR PUBLICATION I remember taking a coaching class from Arkansas designer Tobi Fairley and she said, “When I walk into a home of a new client, I’m designing with the end in mind. With how my design will look when it’s photographed and published.” I didn’t quite understand that as a new designer, but I do now. This is the approach we now take as well. It helps us to focus on every wall and every corner to make sure that the design is balanced and “full”. When you look thru a camera lens, you see flat and dull areas of a space right away. So if we design with this viewpoint in mind, we won’t miss anything. 3. LEAVE THE SPACE "FINISHED" - IN OTHER WORDS, DESIGN FULLY A. We aim to leave a space fully designed so that our client has nothing left to worry about. Of course we leave picture frames to be filled and small details like that, but we work hard to incorporate many of the clients personal and important accessories, art and chatkes into the design from the beginning. When we stylize on install day, we include cozy throws, fresh soaps, laundered linens – you name it! This way, the client is thrilled and when we come back to photograph, we don’t have a ton to do. 4. INVEST IN QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHY A. This is our #1 piece of advice not only to have for your website but to have to offer editors. i. Average costs ii. Research photographers and pay for the best iii. Scouting shots vs. providing professional photography to editors 5. HOW TO PREPARE FOR A PHOTO SHOOT A. Prepare your client – clean and tidy the space, no need to be home (this will take hours). B. Fresh flowers the day before – make your own or order ahead – all one color is best i. Kinds that looks best ii. Containers that look best C. Take photos on install day and look back for “holes” or areas that need to be “full” for magazines D. How to dress a kitchen E. It’s ok to remove furniture – look thru the lens with your photographer and offer your eye – participate in your shoot 6. REACH OUT TO EDITORS, MEET & GREET! A. Don’t be shy! They are people too. B. Get used to the names on the Masthead of each shelter magazine. Reach out on social media. C. Post original work on social media especially Instagram. Editors are trolling! D. Don’t be afraid to start locally – blogs, newspapers, etc. E. Read Amy Flurry’s book “Recipe for Press”.

As designed by international award-winning artist Herbert Dreiseitl, the water component of the installation is a demonstration of the cycles of local rainfall. When the storage tanks are low, the pumps stop circulating water over the surface of the sculpture until the next rainfall. However, the energy-efficient lights continue their cascading display. In order to conserve water from evaporation, the pumps generally operate during the daylight hours. Go online for information on the plaza's rain gardens and adjacent green roof, too. There are now three additional short-term, metered parking spaces on the southeast (Huron Street) side of the municipal center site, which is located at 301 E. Huron St. These new spaces are especially convenient for after-hours visitors to the site. Just cross the bridge through the municipal center plaza to reach either buildings' entrance. The science of road constructionAfter nearly six weeks of construction, Huron Parkway, between Hubbard and Fuller, is now complete, and the road is reopened. Still, with plenty of other road projects underway, here is some insight into road construction planning in the City of Ann Arbor.PrioritizationWhen choosing which roads will be reconstructed, the city first calculates the best return on investment, to make sure street millage money is invested in the most economical way. This includes taking into account the condition of the city's utilities. For example, it is prudent to repair water and sewer lines ahead of street resurfacing projects, so the streets do not have to be opened again shortly after the reconstruction. If a water main is identified to need replacement, the city adjusts road project priorities to minimize the overall expenditure.DetoursWhen it comes to rerouting traffic due to construction activities, the detour options are admittedly limited. A street map of Ann Arbor will clearly show the general "wheel and spoke" shape of the city's road system, with some areas in a grid pattern. As a result of this configuration, there are few substitute routes capable of providing convenient detours.Perhaps the best route to take when construction project “season” approaches is to know the facts. Be sure to subscribe to receive road and lane closure email updates. In addition, some of the larger-scale projects may have their own, specific subscription topics. See a complete topic list on the city website at www.a2gov.org/subscribe. Updates may also be posted to the City of Ann Arbor Facebook and Twitterpages. Farmers Market makes healthy food available for allThe Ann Arbor Farmers Market, 315 Detroit St., is one of the oldest, largest producer-only markets in Michigan, turning 93 years old this year. As part of its mission, the market began a collaboration in 2009 to help ensure locally grown, nutritious offerings are available to the entire community by accepting state-aided purchases through the Michigan Department of Human Services Bridge Card. The process is simple … Holders of a state-issued Bridge Card can visit the market office to get tokens to use for market purchases; request a dollar amount to use at the market; swipe the Bridge Card; the requested amount is deducted; and market tokens are issued to use at participating market vendor stalls. The Bridge Card can be used to buy fresh food including fruits, vegetables, meat, cheese, bread, eggs, and plants to grow vegetables and herbs in your own gardens (please note that hot food items are not eligible for Bridge Card purchases). Look for a "Bridge Card Tokens Accepted Here" sign in vendors' stalls, which will identify those who accept Bridge Card tokens.More good news for Bridge Card holders: The Double Up Food Bucks program will begin Saturday, June 2 at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market, allowing you to double your Bridge Card dollars. For added convenience to all shoppers, the token system is also available for any market guest who wishes to have a credit card swiped in exchange for market tokens. The Ann Arbor Farmers Market is open year round on Saturdays, and May through December on Saturdays and Wednesdays. A dynamic evening market takes place Wednesday evenings in the spring and summer. Go online for more information. DEQ brownfield grantThe Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has awarded a $1 million brownfield redevelopment grant to help clean up and return the former Georgetown Mall site to commercial use. Past development efforts of the 6.7-acre site on Packard Street on Ann Arbor's south side have been hindered by contamination of soils under the building from a dry cleaning business that previously operated in the mall, thus the reason for the brownfield classification. The grant will be administered by the Washtenaw County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority to facilitate the site's reuse, including removal of contaminated soils, demolition of the existing buildings and the development of mixed-use space. The new development will be pedestrian friendly, with a bus stop, secure bicycle parking, a pocket park and will have on-site stormwater management. For more information on this project, visitthe city's website (PDF). Details about the DEQ Brownfield Redevelopment Program is available on the DEQ website. Recycling electronicsDid you know electronics, such as televisions, computers/monitors, etc., are prohibited from Ann Arbor's trash and recycling carts and dumpster collection program? That's because toxic chemicals can be released during the refuse-collection (crushing and compacting) process. Instead, please take note of other, safe ways to dispose of these items.Michigan has an e-waste take back law which requires manufacturers to offer free and convenient take back programs to ensure that all televisions, computers, and printers are fully recycled. (Before you recycle your computer, just be sure to erase the unit's hard drive to eliminate personal data. Best Buy's website, under “recycling,” offers a brief video showing how to erase data from a hard drive.) Visit the city website to learn about electronics disposal programs available in the Ann Arbor area. There are also several mail-back options for computers and televisions offered by the different manufacturers posted atwww.michigan.gov/deqewaste. The Newsletter for the City of Ann Arbor, Mich. • May 2012 • Volume 6 • Number 5 City administrator presents proposed FY 2013 budget to City CouncilOn April 16, City Administrator Steve Powers presented his recommended Fiscal Year 2013 budget. City Council will consider the proposal during the next few weeks and vote on May 21.Budget overviewThe FY 2013 budget is the second year of a two-year budget plan. While the city administrator's proposed budget is similar to the spending plan approved by City Council last year, adjustments were made to respond to current City Council priorities and community needs.Among the highlights:Planned reductions in police and fire staffing are eliminated.A police recruit program will supplement sworn officers and assist with public safety concerns in downtown. Park mowing will move from the current 19-day cycle to a 14-day cycle. Seasonal park monitors will be added.Street repair and resurfacing work will be at an all-time high. These investments in services and infrastructure do not compromise the city's financial policies. During the past several years, City Council provided the policy discipline to manage through a very difficult economic environment. The city administrator's proposed FY 2013 budget recommends the same fiscal discipline in the coming fiscal year. Recurring expenditures are funded by recurring revenues. Help prevent stormwater system pollutionStormwater is runoff from rain or snowmelt that flows off streets, rooftops and lawns into storm drains, which lead directly into streams, lakes and rivers. Stormwater receives no treatment before being discharged to surface waters. If polluted, stormwater can negatively impact the local water resources used for drinking water, recreation and wildlife habitat. The City of Ann Arbor's “A Resident's Guide to Clean Water” features 10 easy tips to use at home and on the job. From using phosphorus-free lawn fertilizer to painting tips (washing latex paint brushes in the sink, not outside), these actions add up to significant reductions in pollutants entering the stormwater system and help protect the water quality in the Huron River, the source of 85 percent of Ann Arbor's drinking water. Find these tips online, and an index to related stormwater issues is available at www.a2gov.org/storm. Meetings will take place:Monday, April 9, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Ann Arbor Senior Center, 1320 Baldwin Avenue.Wednesday, April 11, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Cobblestone Farm Center, 2781 Packard Road.Monday, April 23, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Leslie Science & Nature Center Nature House, 1831 Traver Road.Thursday, April 26, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Ann Arbor Public Library Traverwood Branch, 3333 Traverwood Drive. The meeting agenda will include a brief background on the parks millage and how it is used by the park system; an explanation of how the park system is funded; and information regarding the proposed millage renewal process. The Park Maintenance and Capital Improvements Millage is a six-year millage for 1.10 mills that was approved by residents of the City of Ann Arbor on Nov. 7, 2006. The millage expires in 2012. Each year, the millage generates approximately $5 million in revenue.Between 60 and 80 percent of the annual millage funds support city park maintenance activities, such as forestry and horticulture; natural area preservation; park operations; park equipment repairs; park security; and recreation facility maintenance. Between 20 and 40 percent of the annual millage funds is designated for city park capital improvements in the following areas: active parks; forestry and horticulture; historic preservation; neighborhood parks and urban plazas; pathways, trails, boardwalks, greenways and the Huron River watershed; recreation facilities; and park equipment acquisitions. If you are not able to attend a public meeting, you can share your comments or questions via email. A website dedicated to the parks millage will go live to the public during the week of April 2, 2012, atwww.a2gov.org/parksmillage.Spring hydrant flushing resumesThe City of Ann Arbor water utilities division conducts annual fire hydrant inspection and system maintenance. The seasonal hydrant work begins April 2, weather permitting. Hydrant-flushing schedules will be posted on the city's “news” Web page; and more information is available on the city's hydrant-flushing website. Why is it helpful to know when hydrant flushing is happening in your neighborhood? On occasion during the hydrant-flushing process, the water in area homes may have an orange or rusty appearance. The discolored water does not pose a health or safety risk, but the water can cause stains to laundry. If water appears discolored, please run the cold water for several minutes to clear your lines. You should also flush your toilets once or twice. The water should run clear within a few minutes. The iron sediment in the water main being disturbed by the hydrant flushing causes the discoloration. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the hydrant-flushing process, please visit the website, or contact the City of Ann Arbor field services unit at 734.794.6350.Planning and development services debuts mobile websiteA new mobile website is now available for the city's construction and building customers. This new site enables people to use their Smartphones or tablets to access building records and general planning and development information, as well as to schedule and obtain inspection results and plan review status. This service is a complement to the eTRAKiT system, which currently allows users to access this same information from a website and through its interactive voice response system for phones.Save this URL as a favorite on your phone: http://etrakit.a2gov.org/mobile. This feature will allow customers greater access to construction and building information to a user base that does a great deal of their work in the field and on location.Seasonal siren testingThe City of Ann Arbor's 22 outdoor warning system sirens are tested every second Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m., with one minute of steady wailing. Testing of the sirens is performed March through November. Please remember that the sirens are an outdoor warning system only and are not intended to be heard indoors. The city's outdoor warning system sirens are activated for the following situations: tornado warning, hazardous materials spill or terrorist attack. In the event that the sirens are activated, they will sound for three minutes, and citizens should seek cover immediately.During a local disaster emergency, residents can tune into Community Television Network channels 16, 17, 18 or 19 for local emergency information and updates. In the event of a power outage, residents should tune their battery-operated radios to WAAM 1600 AM, WEMU 89.1 FM, or KOOL 107.1 FM.Start paddling! The Gallup Canoe Livery and the coffee shop will open early this season, on Sunday, April 1 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Boat rentals will be available for paddling the 2.5 miles of Gallup Pond.
