Only 12 minutes into the opening game of the Stanley Cup Final, it appeared as is the Carolina Hurricanes were going to cruise in a manner similar to what we've seen in the first three rounds.However, their Vegas opponents are a veteran team. Battle-hardened and only three years removed from a championship. Once they get their legs under them, the Golden Knights pressured the 'Canes in a manner that they have yet to see in the playoffs and used a late goal to take home-ice advantage away.Vic and Neil break it down and discuss the adjustments Rod Brind'Amour may need to make for Thursday's second game.We'll also talk about the GM moves affecting the Avalanche and Predators, a new head coach in Vancouver and the awarding of the Norris Trophy.X: https://twitter.com/NHLWraparoundNeil Smith: https://twitter.com/NYCNeilVic Morren: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vic-morren-7038737/NHL Wraparound Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nhlwraparound/#NHLWraparound #NHLWraparound.com #ShortShifts #NYCentric #CelebritySeries #HallofFameEdition #StanleyCupdate #SummerCoolers #Smith'sPix #NeilSmith #VicMorren #BZZR #NHL #SummerCoolers #AnaheimDucks # #BostonBruins #BuffaloSabres #CalgaryFlames #CarolinaHurricanes #ChicagoBlackhawks #ColoradoAvalanche #ColumbusBlueJackets #DallasStars #DetroitRedWings #EdmontonOilers #FloridaPanthers #LosAngelesKings #MinnesotaWild #MontrealCanadiens #NashvillePredators #NewJerseyDevils #NewYorkIslanders #NewYorkRangers #OttawaSenators #PhiladelphiaFlyers #PittsburghPenguins #StLouisBlues #SanJoseSharks #SeattleKraken #TampaBayLightning #TorontoMapleLeafs #UtahMammoth #VancouverCanucks #VegasGoldenKnights #WashingtonCapitals #WinnipegJets #NikolajEhlers #CarterHart #JaccobSlavin #JackEichel #JalenChatfield #JohnTortorella #SheaTheodore #KeeganKolesar #EricRobinson #ColeSmith #LoganStankoven #IvanBarbashev #FrederikAndersen #BrettHowden #MitchMarner #WilliamKarlsson #NoahHanafin #JordanMartinook #K'AndreMIller #JordanStaal #ShayneGostisbehere #DaveJackson #ColtonSissons #SethJarvis #AlexanderNikishin #RodBrind'Amour #ChrisMacFarland #BarryTrotz #JoeSakic #MannyMalhotra #AbbotsfordCanucks #GlenSather #AdamFoote #DanielSedin #HenrikSedin #RyanJohnson #ZachWerenski #NorrisTrophy #CaleMakar #RasmusDahlin #EvanBouchard

Larry Robinson was the cornerstone of the Montreal Canadiens' blue line during one of the greatest dynasties in NHL history, and the 1975–76 season was where he truly announced himself to the hockey world. He had already been part of the 1973 Cup-winning team, but it was the 1976 Stanley Cup Final against the Philadelphia Flyers where Robinson really made his mark. The Flyers were the feared Broad Street Bullies — a team that had built its identity around intimidation and physical play — and Robinson essentially said, not today. He scored a key goal early in the series and was so punishing with his body checking that, as Ken Dryden remembered it, "they had to bring hammers and crowbars to fix the dent in the boards." Scotty Bowman's Canadiens swept Philadelphia in four games, and Robinson's performance was so dominant that he ended up on the cover of Sports Illustrated on May 24, 1976, photographed delivering a check on Flyers forward Mel Bridgman. And that was really just the start of it. Robinson went on to lead Montreal to four Stanley Cups between 1976 and 1979, cementing the Canadiens as the defining team of that era. The season after the Flyers sweep, he put up 19 goals and 66 assists and walked away with the Norris Trophy as the league's best defenseman. He could skate, he could shoot, and he could absolutely flatten you if you got near his crease. For a stretch in the late '70s, there wasn't a more complete defenseman in hockey — and most opponents knew better than to test that. After 17 dominant seasons in Montreal, Robinson finished his playing career with the LA Kings before later returning to the organization as head coach, making him one of the more quietly significant figures in Kings history on both sides of the bench. Nick Nickson spent 44 years as the voice of the LA Kings, becoming as much a part of the franchise as any player who ever laced up at the Forum or Crypto.com Arena. Over that remarkable run he called more than 4,300 professional games and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015, receiving the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for excellence in broadcasting — putting him in the same company as his longtime Kings broadcast partner Bob Miller. For a generation of Kings fans, Nickson's voice is inseparable from the franchise's biggest moments, including the call of their first-ever Stanley Cup in 2012, when he memorably declared, "The long wait is over! After 45 years, the Kings can wear their crown!" He retired after the 2024–25 season, closing the book on one of the great broadcasting careers in LA sports history — and his appearance on Past Our Prime was a reminder of just how many chapters of hockey history this man lived through firsthand. Nickson comes on POP to talk with Scott, Bill, and Marc to discuss Robinson, the Montreal dynasty, the arrival of Wayne Gretzky in Los Angeles, and what that era meant for hockey on the West Coast as well as the two Cups won by the NHL's only monarchy— the Kings. Nickson had a front row seat for all of it and now he shares those insights with us as we take our weekly look back at the world of sports through the May 24, 1976 issue of Sports Illustrated. 50 years later, Robinson's dominance is still front and center and with the help of Nickson, we relive it all on Past Our Prime… Learn more about your ad choices. It's Friday afternoon, which means a fresh episode of Oilersnation Radio is ready to massage your eardrums with an hour of off-season Oilers talk. On today's podcast, the fellas discussed the Oilers' first-round exit, what changes to expect in Edmonton, line combinations, injury updates, and more.We kicked off the Friday episode of ONR with a delicious debate about who out of Stan Bowman, Darnell Nurse, Tristan Jarry, and Kris Knoblauch will be around next year. Given that there will be plenty of changes over the summer, the guys looked at the four most talked-about names and took a few swings at who they think will be around when October rolls around. That led to a debate about which of those guys are likely to be around, not because they're necessarily wanted, but rather because contracts make it likely. Shifting gears, the boys looked at Evan Bouchard being snubbed from being a Norris Trophy finalist. As you'll hear, Rick was very passionate about No. 2 not getting a nod for the award, and how it seems unfathomable that the year he had wasn't worth being named as one of the NHL's three best defencemen. The fellas also discussed Connor McDavid's Hart Trophy nomination and how Liam thinks it's all but a guarantee that he wins the award. Finally, we wrapped up the Friday episode of ONR with another round of Ask the Idiots, betting talk for our friends at bet365, and Hot and Cold Performers to look back on the week that was. With the playoffs firmly underway, the guys spent the bulk of the podcast moving through a range of topics, most related to the Oilers' off-season, some not, but that's the way things go on the Friday episode of ONR.
Who does Craig Button think that the San Jose Sharks should pick at No. 2? (00:04:32) Button is on the hot seat from the first question! If the Toronto Maple Leafs pass on Gavin McKenna, would Button take Chase Reid over McKenna? Is Reid his clear-cut top defenseman of the 2026 Draft over Keaton Verhoeff, Carson Carels, Alberts Smits, and Daxon Rudolph? Is Ivar Stenberg vs. Caleb Malhotra a discussion? Could Malhotra make sense for the Sharks? (00:27:44) Why is Reid so exciting to Button? Would Button trade the No. 2 pick for a star NHL defenseman? Button shares a possible target for the San Jose Sharks' No. 19 or 20 pick. What did Button think of Michael Misa and Sam Dickinson's rookie seasons? Why is he high on Leo Sahlin Wallenius and Eric Pohlkamp? (00:46:09) Dan Boyle and Zubair Jeewanjee jump on to talk about the playoffs! Why has Boyle been so impressed by Quinn Hughes? What did he think about the Norris Trophy voting? Boyle has no issue with Evan Bouchard getting passed up. He also shares his thoughts about potential UFA target Darren Raddysh. (01:11:27) Would we trade the No. 2 pick for Werenski? (01:32:22) We chat about the Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews to the San Jose Sharks speculation. (01:38:35) Our thoughts on how Toronto Sun reporter Steve Simmons approached the John Chayka press conference. Sheng Peng also recalls making Macklin Celebrini walk off in a post-game press conference this season and asking David Quinn about his job status three years ago. Who are realistic free agency or trade targets on defense for the San Jose Sharks this off-season? Keegan McNally wrote a great article about it recently! Host Brenden Escott takes a tour around the NHL playoff landscape and the league's biggest storylines in a jam-packed hockey conversation with the big boss over at SiriusXM NHL Network Radio, Peter Berce. The episode opens in Edmonton, where frustration continues to build after Evan Bouchard was left off the Norris Trophy finalist list despite another elite offensive season from the blue line. Was this simply a stacked year for candidates, or does Bouchard still face hurdles in how his overall game is perceived league-wide? The discussion then shifts to the broader state of the Edmonton Oilers and the mounting pressure surrounding a Stanley Cup-or-bust roster. How much scrutiny should be placed on management and coaching, and just how warm are the seats of GM Stan Bowman and head coach Kris Knoblauch as expectations continue to rise in Northern Alberta? In Toronto, chaos and excitement seem to be colliding at once. The Leafs followed one of the most polarizing press conferences in recent memory — surrounding the hiring of John Chayka and Mats Sundin — by winning the NHL Draft Lottery. The episode explores the public reaction to the moves, the debate now taking place inside Toronto's draft room and whether the Leafs should prioritize organizational need or simply take the best player available with the top selection. The Stanley Cup Playoffs also remain front and centre, with analysis of Montreal's Game 1 loss to Buffalo in the second round. What has stood out about the Canadiens' surprising playoff run, and how critical is it for Cole Caufield to rediscover his scoring touch? Plus, the Anaheim Ducks stun Vegas with a bounce-back win in the desert. What does Anaheim's response say about the belief and resilience of this young group? Thursday afternoon means a fresh episode of Real Life was recorded and edited, and it's ready to help you wrap up the week. On today's podcast, the guys discussed what comes next for the Edmonton Oilers, Evan Bouchard's Norris Trophy snub, the Leafs winning the NHL Draft Lottery, and much more. The guys kicked off the Monday episode of Real Life with a conversation about the latest round of drama in the Mike Vrabel and Diana Russini story and how TMZ just released another batch of photos and documents about their affair. Needless to say, the rabbit hole keeps getting deeper by the day, and it's going to be fascinating to see where this story ends up when the dust settles. With the Oilers out of the playoffs, the boys have a bunch more time to think about other things.Changing gears, the conversation turned to a bunch of movie talk. The boys really dove into the weeds on what they're watching these days and which movies can lure them back to rewatching, even if they've seen them a bunch of times. Even though the segment was meant to be only a few minutes, the boys ended up talking about movies and TV for much longer than anyone expected. Even though they acknowledged the segment was going on too long, it ended up running a few more minutes anyway. Finally, the guys wrapped up the podcast on the Thursday episode of Real Life with a run of topics, starting with the name rights for Rogers Place could potentially be wrapping up and whether any new companies would work their way in. Chalmers also shared the story of a WHL prospect who went 9th overall in the draft, and how it was such a cool moment for a young man he's known since childhood. Hosted on Acast. The mood in Edmonton hasn't lightened much since the handshake line. Gager is joined by special guest Reid Wilkins today as the fellas sift through the fallout of a disappointing first-round exit and a bombshell morning of NHL awards news that has Oilers fans—and the locker room—scratching their heads. The Norris Snub: The NHL officially announced the Norris Trophy finalists today, and Evan Bouchard was nowhere to be found. Despite leading all NHL defensemen with a staggering 95 points (60 at even strength), Bouchard was passed over for Dahlin, Makar, and Werenski. The boys debate: Did his defensive "lapses" truly outweigh a historically elite offensive season, or is there a genuine bias against the Oilers' blueliner? Edmonton Post-Mortem: It's been a heavy week of reflection. Reid and Gager recap the "concerned" and "average" comments from the stars and what they signal for the locker room's confidence. The Firing Line: We get into the latest rumblings regarding Kris Knoblauch and Stan Bowman. After taking what Leon Draisaitl called a "big step backwards," is a management or coaching change the only way to salvage the next two years of the McDavid era? Crunching The Numbers: We take a hard look at the roster, cap space, and the lack of assets. Is there a realistic path back to the Cup Final, or is the window closing faster than we thought? Round 2 Pulse: The bracket is moving on without Edmonton. We recap the action from the East and West: Canes in Command: Carolina holds a 2-0 lead as they head to Philly for Game 3 tonight. Avs' Offensive Explosion: Colorado is looking unstoppable after a 9-goal Game 1 and a dominant Game 2. Sabres vs. Habs: Buffalo takes the early advantage in a battle of young Atlantic rivals. 2 Guys & a Goalie is presented by GS Construction!
