This podcast is for mi Raza. This is for my people and for anyone who would like to know a little about myself, and how I put it down for my community. Here you will find a variety of deep and personal topics, as well as educational and informative. I'm an undocumented first generation college student. My intention is to provide a safe space where our Brown folks know they have a voice! Where they can tell their stories without fear. The goal is to empower ourselves within each other. Whether it's teaching the youth about our culture, or getting our gente informed about the latest news!

    The Brown College Experience

Nationally, fewer than 20% of men of color possessed a four-year college degree in 2012 (Pérez Huber et al., 2015). These numbers have not improved in close to 10 years (NCES, 2020) and have drawn national concern—prompting responses from philanthropy, postsecondary institutions, and policymakers that address how college climates have diminished retention and persistence (Museus et al., 2017). Many colleges and universities are not fully aware of men of color's intersectional needs and have yet to develop appropriate institutional responses to address these students' depressed retention and graduation rates (Clark et al., 2013). Many college campuses also have not considered how the college environment and institutional factors contribute to students' lack of connection with faculty, staff, and administration (Museus et al., 2017; Huerta, 2020; Hurtado & Carter, 1997; Rendon, 1994). The disconnection leads to perceptions that individual student failure is outside the scope of professional and moral responsibility and that students “should know” how to navigate a “hidden curriculum.”  On this episode of the podcast I had the pleasure of sharing the mic with X'andri Bautista and Jaime Cortez Jimenez. Both whom are recent and soon to be university graduates. In this episode we had the chance to speak on behalf of our experience as men of color and the peer perspective of X'andri. Digging in further to why the statistics have continued to read very low in the number of men attending colleges and universities. We hope you enjoy this episode, feel free to reach out and hopefully we can continue to keep the conversation going. Alrato

How has your racial appearance affect your everyday life?

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 3, 2022 13:00

How has your racial appearance affect your everyday life? and if it does how have things changed in your favor? You see we as people of color (POC) often struggle with being accepted for who we are and are often given odd looks when stepping out in public. I remember being a youngster, walking into markets, stores, businesses and always having eyes on me and my family or friends. I remember being told by white people to not steal while I was shopping alone, I was told they could not sell to me because they think I couldn't afford the gallon of milk my mom would send me to buy. I was always looked as the "bad guy", to this day I will step into public places and those looks hit a lot too familiar lol. I let them stare all they want, I put myself out there, full of pride because I know that when someone tells me something. I know far too well how to respond. And yes its scary because you don't know what others are capable of. But I won't let their privilege or authority stop me from achieving what I want. If you see me and you feel threatened, that sounds more like a personal problem. I come from hard working immigrant parents, shit I'm undocumented myself, Qvo! thanks for running into this short episode, lets spark up some conversations??
