Today's episode comes to you on Memorial Day, so I thought I would do some quotes on "Sacrifice" as a way to honor and recognize those people who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep us free and to help others in the world live freely, too. However, only one of the quotes is about that kind of sacrifice. The rest of them are great quotes for you, as leaders, to use with your teams to help them understand the importance of sacrificing some things in order to help your teams have a chance to become the best they can be.For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.

However, I wasn't able to upload it to my podcast host's site that morning, and I planned to do it later in the day. Well, as my days are always busy now (even Saturdays and Sundays!), I didn't get to it. Then on Monday morning, I left the house at 5:30 for a meeting in Helena. From then on until Wednesday night, I forgot that I had not uploaded the episode. My wife and I flew out to Newark, New Jersey to spend time with our son over the Thanksgiving holiday. I thought about the episode at some different times, but whenever I did, I was not near my computer, so I never uploaded it. It is now Sunday morning, and I am sitting in the Newark airport ready to fly home (already have had a 3-hour delay, but hoping that it all works out). I was going to upload and release this episode on whatever day I finished all of the technical parts (like writing this!), but now that it's Sunday, it will come out on Monday, exactly one week after it should have been released.Anyway, great ideas in here from someone I have quoted before and know I will quote again. really good stuff, some of which I have already used with kids, coaches, and parents while communicating with them. You might recognize the title of this episode as a quote by Marcus Aurelius, and you would be right in doing so. However, in today's episode, I am actually talking about 10 points and a few quotes from the Introduction to Brene Brown's book, Dare to Lead, that I mentioned a few weeks ago.In the Introduction, she mentions Aurelius's quote, but she does it to introduce 10 behaviors and cultural issues that leaders identified as getting in the way of their organizations becoming the best they could become. Check out the 10 things she talks about and see if you find that the organizations and teams that you are involved in have many of those same issues that are keeping you from achieving all that you are trying to achieve. Really powerful stuff here, and I'm sure I will be doing more from this book at some point in the future. You won't hear the introduction and the closing comments that I have been saying for four years of doing the podcast. It's just me starting things off and closing things down. Yes, there is still the music by Krisztian Vass at the beginning and end, but much less of it and no canned comments from me over it.As usual, I'm going to be bringing you great quotes to help you in your leadership realm, but also just in living your life. And today is no exception. Today, I am talking about two paragraphs in a book I have just started reading by an author who is no stranger to this podcast - Dr. Brene Brown. I have talked about and read quotes by and done a series of quotes by Brene Brown, so if you've been a regular listener to the show, you should be familiar with her work.I am just starting her book "Dare to Lead," and already, just in the Introduction to the book, I have gotten a lot out of it. Today's episode focuses on two paragraphs in the Introduction that are huge for us as teachers/coaches. I highly recommend you check out the book. While I'm not planning on doing a series on the book right now, I can't fathom I won't be taking quotes and ideas from the book and talking about them on the podcast. even if I don't do that, I think you will find (like I think I'm going to find) lots of great things in this book for your own leadership/coaching journey. For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.

I don't remember the first time I ever heard this quote, but it was one of those that stopped me in my tracks and got me thinking, trying to figure out exactly what it meant. I have used it ever since then as a great message for young people (and old people, too) to not get so caught up in comparing themselves to others, yet to use comparison as a means to drive yourself to become the best you that you can become. For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.

The catalyst for today's quote is the off-season that my team is currently in. As a basketball coach, I often tell players that basketball players are not made from November to March; they are made from March to November. (Maybe that's a quote I should talk about in the future!) Of course, what I'm talking about when I say that is that players must put in time in the off-season to becoming better players. But we also talk about the idea that you don't just "put in time." You need to make sure that you maximize the time you are putting in by working extremely hard at what you need to work on to grow, develop, and improve. This quote comes to us from Bruce Brown, the director of Proactive Coaching. As you probably know, I am one of the members of the Proactive Coaching speaking team. I first heard this line about 20 years ago when I heard Bruce give our "7 Ways to Lead" presentation. Since 2008 (when I joined the speaking team), I have been saying this line whenever I give that talk or whenever I do our "Captains & Coaches Workshop." It is a great line about the impact that those who are committed to your programs have on those who are not as committed. You're going to love this one, and you're going to want to use it with your teams. . . immediately! For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.

For those of you who aren't Christian or who are not people of faith, this is not a religion-focused episode or anything along the lines. I'm talking about a great quote that our Pastor, Shad Durgan, said in his sermon that can be applied to all of us in much more than just a religious context. He was talking about what true greatness is and where you find it. This week's quote comes to us from an unlikely source. Well, I should say it's an unlikely source, only because I had not heard it until late last week. I was scrolling through my Twitter feed (Arrgghhh! I hate how Twitter sucks me in like that!), and I came across a video of the British actor, Michael Caine. I don't remember who posted the video; I thought it was Brett Ledbetter of "What Drives Winning," but I can't find the video anywhere on their site, so I'm not sure where it came from. No matter where it came from, though, the quote and the idea behind it are outstanding, and I knew the moment I heard it that I needed to talk about it.
