Great Quotes for Coaches Podcast

The catalyst for today's quote is the off-season that my team is currently in. As a basketball coach, I often tell players that basketball players are not made from November to March; they are made from March to November. (Maybe that's a quote I should talk about in the future!) Of course, what I'm talking about when I say that is that players must put in time in the off-season to becoming better players. But we also talk about the idea that you don't just "put in time." You need to make sure that you maximize the time you are putting in by working extremely hard at what you need to work on to grow, develop, and improve. This quote comes to us from Bruce Brown, the director of Proactive Coaching. As you probably know, I am one of the members of the Proactive Coaching speaking team. I first heard this line about 20 years ago when I heard Bruce give our "7 Ways to Lead" presentation. Since 2008 (when I joined the speaking team), I have been saying this line whenever I give that talk or whenever I do our "Captains & Coaches Workshop." It is a great line about the impact that those who are committed to your programs have on those who are not as committed. You're going to love this one, and you're going to want to use it with your teams. . . immediately! For more information to help you on your road to becoming your best, check us out at SlamDunkSuccess.com or email me at scott@slamdunksuccess.com.As always, our background music is "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass.

This week we continue Season 3 with another episode where I will be talking about an impactful quote. This is  Part 2 of a 2-part episode that I began last week. Today's quote and last week's quote are quite similar to one another, but their focus is just a bit different, so I thought I would talk about each of them over these two weeks. This week's quote carries on the concept of getting more improvement in the areas where we want to improve by focusing our attention on them. The difference is that instead of focusing on "measurement" like we did last week, this week we focus on "rewarding" the behaviors and skills that we want to see more of.I first heard this quote from Bruce Brown of Proactive Coaching in the presentation "First Steps to Great Teams" and later in "Team-Building through Positive Conditioning." I absolutely love this quote, and I have used it ever since hearing it for the first time. I think it is one that you are going to love, too. You should definitely check out both of those presentations and the booklets that support them at www.proactivecoaching.info. Proactive Coaching is a valuable resource that you will want to go to for help & guidance throughout your career! Also, last week we introduced you to some new new intro and outro music for our show, and we continue that this week and will do so on into the foreseeable future. The song is called "Dance in the Sun" by Krisztian Vass. I think it's a nice, lively, upbeat tune for our show. Thanks to Krisztian for a great song!

We have finished all the blocks of the Pyramid, and we are now into what Wooden called the Mortar that holds the blocks together. We covered the first three mortar elements already, Ambition, Sincerity, & Adaptability.Today we move to Mortar Element #4 - Honesty. Is there really much that needs to be said about the importance of honesty if we are going to be considered truly successful? If we climb some type of ladder of success, but we have been dishonest in doing so, have we really been successful? Not if we are trying to live by all of the other elements of the Pyramid of Success. You will hear a few great stories today in support of the importance of honesty. A couple of them will focus on a term called, "Honor Calls." I first heard the term from the director of Proactive Coaching, Bruce Brown. Both stories will illustrate players who demonstrated the concept of an honor call perfectly, one in the biggest game of a high school athlete's career! You will also hear six quotes today in support of the concept of Honesty.

Today we get to hear from one of my coaching mentors, Bruce Brown of Proactive Coaching. I have had a few coaching mentors in my life. Like all coaches, I have had long-distance mentors who I have followed and learned from, like Coach K at Duke University. But as far as in-person coaching mentors, while I have coached with many great coaches, learned a ton from many of them, and feel they contributed greatly to who I am as a coach, I have only had a few people who I consider as actual coaching mentors of mine. One of them is Bruce Brown.Bruce became a mentor for me in the second half of my career after I met him in 2002. While I could write so much about Bruce to explain what has made him such a great mentor to me, space here prevents me from doing so. Suffice it to say that I learned so many new and different ways to deal with kids, parents, fellow coaches, building teams, creating and living by Core Covenants, and so much more from Bruce. I only wish I had met him at the beginning of my career, so I could have implemented the things I learned from him earlier. In today's episode, you will get a glimpse as to why he has had such a big impact on me. Bruce discusses a quote that he heard very early in his coaching career from a high school football coach in Washington named Rich Rowe. In many ways, it set a tone for Bruce in his coaching and then in his life. The quote is "What you have, give. What you save, you lose forever." I love this quote for a variety of reasons, and you will hear some great ideas that Bruce shares with us, plus a GREAT story about the first time Bruce met Coach John Wooden when Bruce was early in his coaching career. This quote also fits right in with the servant-leader types of quotes we have had in some of our recent episodes. In fact, it is very close to the quote by Albert Pine that Kathryn Geouge talked about in episode 37, "What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal." I love how many of the quotes we have discussed in our show so far have great connections and can help illustrate and reinforce the other ones.If you would like to connect with Bruce, he can be reached at bruce@proactivecoaching.info. Today we have our second "Interview Episode" where I interview another coach/leader about a quote that s/he found inspirational, motivational, or helpful in some way. Today's guest is Rob Miller from Proactive Coaching. I have known Rob for about 10 years, as I am also a speaker with Proactive Coaching. Rob's resume is varied, and you will hear a bit about it in the interview.More importantly, you will hear Rob discuss the quote he has selected. It is from the movie "The Shawshank Redemption." The quote was uttered by the character, Andy Dufresne, played by Tim Robbins. He is speaking to Red, played by Morgan Freeman, about getting out of the prison they are in when he says that it comes down to two choices: "Get busy living or get busy dying." In the episode, Rob talks about the impact that quote has had on him and how he has used it. We also talk about various ways that quote can be applied to all of us in our lives. If you are interested in finding out more about Proactive Coaching or would like to order materials or book a presentation, check out the website at www.proactivecoaching.info. Today's episode is the sixth and final episode in our short series on Integrity. This quote comes to us from Former US Senator Alan Simpson. "If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don't have integrity, nothing else matters." I wanted to wrap up this series with this idea that no matter what else you say and do and live by, if you have integrity, none of the other ones will matter all that much because you are living the right way. Conversely, if you don't have integrity, nothing else will matter because people will not care what your other qualities are; they will never be able to get past your lack of integrity. In the episode, I mentioned that I am a speaker for Proactive Coaching and that we usually use this quote as part of our wrap-up of our presentation called, "Life Lessons for Athletes." Brown has been a Teacher, Coach, and Athletic Administrator with 35 years experience working with youth from junior high through the college level. He is the Director of Proactive Coaching, an organization which conducts workshops and furnishes materials designed to instruct coaches, parents, businesses, school districts and athletes in how they can be effective in building teams and promote character and competence. Brown has coached several sports including football and basketball and was employed by the NFL for 24 years. Brown currently travels the country giving presentations on character based coaching. He believes that developing character in our youth can help change the culture of our nation. It’s that belief that motivates this coach and educator to spend countless hours and thousands of miles on the road, speaking to athletes, parents groups, coaches and businesses. Sports, which can play a vital role in the development of our youth, is the foundation upon which Brown builds his presentation. As Brown puts it, “The culture of sport is out of perspective.” Every night on SportsCenter, we see $8-million athletes who say, “I don’t have to practice”. They have a sense of entitlement. The danger is in the trickle down effect of that attitude from the professional athlete to the 10-year-old kid. What they see affects how they react to a coach, teammate or official. Brown has produced six instructional character based coaching DVD’s and six basketball instructional DVD’s. He is the author of eight coaching books and 17 booklets. Some of his accomplishments are: * A Teacher, Coach, Athletic Administrator with 35 years experience working with youth * Director of Proactive Coaching * Coached several sports including football and basketball * Employed by the NFL for 24 years * Was the former special presenter for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics * Clinician, speaking to Athletes, Coaches, Parents, School Districts and Corporations Nationwide * NAIA National Co-Athletic Director of the Year – 2002

'You get what you reward, and it perpetuates itself' My Cringe Moments Using bad language when coaching Once, when mad in practice, Scott yelled 'There is nothing fun about this!' - in retrospect he realizes the irony of that statement, considering the #1 reason kids play sports is to have fun. Another practice Scott once had them do conditioning during a lightning storm My ‘Ah-Ha' Moments Learning from Proactive Coaching about creating a culture. 75+% of teams let their culture happen 'by accident.'  Instead - create Core Covenants - that are the standards for what your team is going to be. Involve the captains when creating these. Check out Proactive Coaching's guide to creating Core Covanants: First Steps to Building Successful Teams From a parenting point of view - Kids least favorite part of sports is the post-game analysis from their parents on the ride home from games From a coaching point of view - Are your post-game talks too long? Are you over-analzing the game in your post-game talk? Mental Toughness/Achieving Peak Performance 'This is a relationship business.' How do I react when one of my players makes a mistake? The 3 C's of Trust: Competence Caring Character 'Focus on the process not the outcome.' When Lebron James was struggling with free throws a few years ago- he went to a shooting coach, and the coach asked him what he was thinking about when he went to the line. Lebron said he thought about making it. The coach said- 'Don't think about making it, think about your process.' The key to confidence is preparation Create a mistake-recovery ritual HUGE IDEA: Use these words: 'Look what you've become!' or 'Look what you were able to figure out' - instead of taking any credit yourself Culture – Discipline/Rewards/Teambuilding Have standards not rules. Kids can rise to standards. Discipline is focused attention and focused effort 'You get what you reward, and it perpetuates itself' HUGE IDEA Positive Conditioning - The winners get to run! You have to put all your attention/effort into recognizing the kids who are earning the right to run. For poor effort: 'You guys just lost your chance to become better. You lost your chance to condition.' Year-end Award Banquet - Instead of MVP - reward the MVT - Most Valuable Teammate. Or even better - have 6 awards: Most Improved, one for each of your 4 core covenants, and one for who best exemplified all 4 core covenants. And the same kid can earn multiple awards. Favorite coaching book/quote 'Success is a peace of mind that is the direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.' - John Wooden Coach With Character
