In this weeks episode Monica Monique and Zeee try to get through a day without breaking down. Monica talks about a client order that she regrets taking and how that order turned out. Monica and Zee get into a conversation about their friend Will who worked at the fabric store next door to Monica's Boutique. Will was the best friend, the best business neighbor and just all around a good human. For the 8 years Monica has had her store she has seen Will 5 days a week. He was often her store body guard, pest control and pretty much volunteer employee. In those years for the past 5 years Zee has also gotten to know Will as a friend and confidant in so many ways. He was a part of our daily routine with work, laughter and conversations about life. In all our future plans we included Will. Monica often talked about opening a fabric store of her own and having Will run it. As well as Zee made sure to let Will hear our podcast first before we ever aired it. We knew in our hearts that as we got older and more successful that Will would be a part of our success. Our hearts are truly broken by the loss of our dear friend. We can still hear his laughter and his loud voice having joyful conversations throughout the business neighborhood as we walk up the streets. We know he is and will be truly missed by his friends, family, neighbors, business neighbors and even the people just walking up the street who won't see his smile anymore. We will love Will forever and he will stay a part of our businesses as we go on, he is still a part of our success. Episode 23:33 More People Are Dying Young. Why??? Last week a 16 year old girl (Callie Marie Mitchell) from Texas died after suffering cardiac arrest at cheerleading camp. The very next day a 17 year old High School basketball star from Alabama (Caleb White) also died from cardiac arrest while playing basketball. Hearts suddenly stopping for no apparent reason… in HEALTHY teenagers. Huh??? Unfortunately, these are NOT isolated cases. For example, just a few weeks ago Lebron James' 19 year old son Bronny also suffered cardiac arrest while playing basketball at his college (University of Southern California). But that's not all. According to the research group Our World in Data more Americans died than expected in the past year (May 1, 2022 - April 30, 2023). Specifically, more than 104,000 deaths occurred than expected. Deaths that were NOT RELATED to Covid-19. Similar research from Life Insurance companies and actuary groups confirm the unexpected increase in deaths, post Covid-19… especially in ages 18 - 64. The big question now becomes “WHY?” WHY are more people dying… and why are they dying at younger ages? No one in a position of authority seems to know the answer. Heck, no one in a position of authority wants to even ask the question. No government officials. No health authorities. No members of the main stream media. No medical doctors or medical associations. On this episode WE not only address this question… we provide answers. Be sure to give this episode a good listen and then share it with a friend. He served during the Cold War in the Berlin Border Patrol in Wildflecken at the East and West German border and three other tours of duty. Nick's family had four generations in the U.S. Army: His grandfather rode with the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War; his father is the last driver for General George Patton from the beaches of Normandy to the outskirts of Berlin during World War II; and his son was a sniper in Special Forces during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflict and gave his life for his country. During Vietnam, he was what was known as a “Tunnel Rat” which we go into in a great amount of detail. After serving Vietnam, Nick decided to try his hand in Hollywood. Nick Sanza is known in the entertainment industry as “Napa Nick”. He started in the film and television industry with the television series Falcon Crest (CBS) as a second unit production manager, location scout and script development. During his time with Falcon Crest from 1982 to 1989 he also was a stuntman and stunt coordinator for Francis Coppola Productions, Paramount Studios, Castle Rock Production (Rob Reiner), NBC, CBS, Universal Television Productions and Dick Wolf Productions. When Falcon Crest went off the air, Nick became a production manager, location manager and stuntman for over 60 national commercials and “Movie of the Week” for ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and Universal Studio Television Productions. In 1992 Barbara Walters, working for ABC, hired Nick as a production manager and location manager to set up a television special for ABC's 20/20 spotlighting Julia Roberts who was filming in the Napa Valley in a feature film called “Dying Young”. Two months after this special was aired, Nick was hired as a producer and investigative journalist for ABC's Good Morning America.

A recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that American life expectancy is the lowest it's been in two decades at 76.4 years. And Americans live shorter lives than people in other wealthy nations like Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom. That's across all demographic groups, meaning even the richest Americans live shorter lives than their counterparts in other countries. There are a lot of reasons for this, including poor diets, lack of access to health care, gun violence, car crashes and deaths from COVID-19. But there are also many potential solutions, some the United States could borrow from other countries. Guests: Jeremy Ney is the author of American Inequality, a newsletter that uses data visualization to cover inequality in the United States. He was previously a macro policy strategist at the Federal Reserve. Colin Planalp is a senior research fellow at State Health Access Data Assistance Center, which is a state health policy research center in the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. Paul Mellick is an associate professor and the chair of the Department of Health and Exercise Science at the University of St. Thomas.
Trump's indictment made history this week but will it make any difference to his support -- or lack thereof -- among various groups of Americans? We're looking back through over seven years of Marist Polls to see what history tells us.Then, there's been a precipitous -- even shocking -- drop in U.S. life expectancy. Dr. Scott Kush from the Life Expectancy Group is here to help us understand why. The obvious answer, COVID-19, doesn't really hold up since other countries quickly bounced back from declines. And, ever thought about life beyond Earth? This week's fun fact gets a little extra-terrestrial.

Not all stand-up comedy is spot-cleaned and pre-packaged for the masses. Like the legends who were born out of smokey, booze-soaked nightclubs of decades past, Doug Stanhope spews his own brand of moral outrage in an unmatched style that borders on self-destruction. Nothing is sacred, no subject off-limits and most importantly nothing is contrived. From critically acclaimed appearances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to regular appearances on The Howard Stern Show, Stanhope always shows an intelligence and brutal honesty in his comedy, no matter how viciously graphic or unsettling the material may be. Taped live at the Gotham Comedy Club, this appearance is an unflinching look at one of the few voices left standing in the dark, punk-rock underbelly of stand-up comedy. NY Times Bestselling Author and Oxford University Creative Writing Tutor, Marti Leimbach, on the art and craft of writing and plotting a novel. She shares her journey across two decades within publishing from being on a film set with Julia Roberts to dealing with family loss, and writing about difficult subjects. Also lessons learned including how writing a draft is like being in a ‘sandbox', what it takes to finish and move beyond the first draft, and why some of the best works of art are great because of their imperfection. *ABOUT MARTI LEIMBACHMarti Leimbach is known for her bestsellers Dying Young which was made into a film starring Julia Roberts, and Daniel Isn't Talking. Her interest in science influenced her eighth novel, a YA thriller, Dragonfly Girl. She teaches on the Masters Programme in Creative Writing at the University of Oxford.*QUOTES FROM MARTI:“Novels are never perfect. And some of the best work of art works of art, whether it's novels or screenplay or paintings or whatever else are very imperfect, actually, if you analyze them, that's what made them a great work of art. And Picasso has something to say about that. In fact, he said that the really original work, the important work never looks as good as its imitators. And the reason is that there's something in that first thrust of creativity that is ugly and raw, and the people who imitate you come after you.”*RESOURCESConnect with Marti:Twitter: @MartiLeimbachInstagram: @Marti LeimbachMarti's website*Books mentioned in the show:Daniel Isn't Talking by Marti LeimbachDragonfly Girl by Marti LeimbachSave the Cat by Blake SnyderThe Story Grid by Shawn CoyneBird by Bird by Ann LamottPeople mentioned in the show:Connor O'Brien - ComedianJulia Roberts - ActressJoel Schumacher - DirectorLeonard Cohen - Songwriter*For show notes, transcripts and to attend our live podcasts visit podcast.londonwriterssalon.comFor free writing sessions, join free Writers' Hours: writershour.com*FOLLOW LONDON WRITERS' SALON:Twitter: twitter.com/WritersSalonInstagram: instagram.com/londonwriterssalonFacebook: facebook.com/LondonWritersSalon*CREDITSProduction by Victoria Spooner. Our next guest is someone I had the honour of standing alongside on the TEDx stage in Brisbane earlier this year. Maggie James is a music therapist with 18 years' experience in paediatric healthcare and has worked extensively in intensive and palliative care. She believes that music provides a meaningful connection with the dying child, and the death of a child should be with dignity and love. Her TEDx talk named Dying Young in the Arms of Music, moved many people to tears – an absolute must watch. Lukas and Maggie share so many beautiful and heartfelt moments in this episode. They talk about the role of music as therapy, how music provides an opportunity to play, and honouring children and their families through music in their child's last moments. Plus, so much more. https://www.ted.com/talks/maggie_james_dying_young_in_the_arms_of_music https://www.austmta.org.au/ https://www.childrens.health.qld.gov.au/?s=music+therapy https://hummingbirdhouse.org.au/

It's a well known fact that life in the medieval era was nasty, brutal, and short. Well known it might be, but is it true? And how can you tell what the life expectancy of people hundreds of years ago was anyway? In this weeks episode David looks at the evidence for the idea that people in the Middle Ages lived only into their thirties and were old well before their time. Content Warning: This episode contains discussion of infant mortality and complications of childbirth.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today we pay our respects to Joel Schumacher, who passed away on June 22, 2020. A costume designer-turned-director, Schumacher made a name for himself with St. Elmo's Fire and The Lost Boys in the mid-to-late 1980s. As demonstrated in those hit films, the filmmaker had an unparalleled eye for young talent. We examine four of lesser-remembered pictures: Cousins, Dying Young, Flawless, and Veronica Guerin. There's plenty of tangents here, as Schumacher was quite an outspoken sort. There are many interviews to reference and admire. We discuss his championing of young star Julia Roberts during her tumultuous rise to fame, the deep love he reveals for his characters (as evidenced in Cousins especially), the passionate failure of Flawless, and the complicated canonization of the title character in Veronica Guerin. We also take the time to celebrate good pal Jason Bailey's piece in which he reminds his readers that Schumacher saved Batman for a moment there. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide. Also enter our giveaways, get access to our private Slack channel, and support new episodes by becoming a Patreon contributor. We are also now on Spotify and Stitcher. Enjoy!

This week, Niki Matt, Morten and Rowena chat all the latest movie news + all the latest from our partner cinema, Genesis. Reviews this week include Love, Simon, A Quiet Place, Blockers and Thoroughbreds. Our guest this week is Nikki Williams aka The Celluloid Sorceress defending Dying Young (1991) in this weeks In Defence Of… This week’s soundtrack of the week comes from Ready Player One. @GenesisCinema @HoxtonMovies @SorceressOfFilm
*Spoiler warning - the entire film is discussed in the special feature. The Hoxton Movies team bring you "In Defence Of..." - a bonus feature in which we invite a guest to defend a film of their choice with less than 6 on IMDB and/or 60% on Rotten Tomatoes. Dying Young (1991) boasts a score of 6 on IMDb but just 23% on Rotten Tomatoes so perhaps more love from the audience side than the critics. Nikki Williams AKA The Celluloid Sorceress is in the studio to defend Dying Young - does she convince the sceptical Hoxton Movies crew? Hey everybody, we're back. That's right, Spotty Translation is back, and it didn't take singing dinosaurs to make it happen. In fact, all it took was some simple social engineering to convince Whales are Whales co-founder Bryan Kelly to bring back the show, and he even agreed to come along for the ride! How exciting! Now, season two of Spotty T is gonna be a little different from when Stephen was sitting in the anime chair. First things first, we got rid of the anime chair and replaced it with a puppet chair like Chairy from Pee-Wee's Playhouse. We're also not gonna be watching an episode per series each week instead focusing on a single program through its entirety which brings me to my next point. We're not technically watching anime in season two instead opting for Taiwanese-Japanese collaboration Thunderbolt Fantasy that brings Pili's hand puppetry into the world of celebrated Japanese writer Urobuchi Gen. Zachary and Bryan recap the first episode, share some thoughts and discuss how the puppets are made and move. It's highly recommend that you watch the first episode if you haven't before listening, and you can do so over at Crunchyroll. Oh, and be sure to watch episode 2, Attack of the Xuán Guǐ Zōng!, before checking back in two weeks time when the next episode of Spotty Translation goes up. On a final note, here are all the characters who appear in the first episode of Thunderbolt Fantasy with their Chinese, Japanese and English names. It's important to keep track of in this multi-lingual (and cultural) series. From the beginning, Warren understood and accepted the fact all things must die. Mortality was a part of life, he always said. But, then he went and got himself a good life. And now, his position on death has evolved. His new philosophy has many ins and outs that he will probably not touch on here tonight, but the ten-peso version is: Warren doesn't want to die!!! On today's show we discuss the topic of stress and how living in urban cities appears to affect our brains. A recent study shows that people who were raised in cities versus rural areas process stress differently. Another study examines the mental benefits of walking in nature. We talk about how our self-talk and tendency to over-generalize can cause us mental distress. And, a recent report by the World Wildlife Fund indicates that animal populations around the globe are also under stress...and dying at a fast rate. The Moment of Paleo segment is called "Becoming You." And, the After the Bell segment features a TEDx Talk, "Nature as Source Code." Claire Vaye Watkins is the guest. Her debut story collection, Battleborn, is now available in paperback from Riverhead. Antonya Nelson, writing for The New York Times Book Review, says “Although individual stories stand alone, together they tell the tale of a place, and of the population that thrives and perishes therein… The historical sits comfortably alongside the contemporary and the factual nicely supplements the fictional… Readers will share in the environs of the author and her characters, be taken into the hardship of a pitiless place and emerge on the other side—wiser, warier and weathered like the landscape.” And The Millions says “As if Watkins’ prose embodies the desert landscape of Nevada itself, the stories are stony, unkind, and harsh, though never unattractive… Beneath these confessions runs a spiritual undertow—that salvific beauty can arise when brutality is brought to light… All of her stories left me feeling purged and oddly cleansed, easily making Battleborn one of the strongest collections I’ve read in years.” Monologue topics: titles, titling, Dying Young, nakedly depressing titles. We explore mortality beliefs by eliciting individual-level belief distributions for participants’ remaining lifespan. Across two independent samples, from Germany and the USA, we find that individuals—while accurately forecasting their life expectancy—substantially overestimate the likelihood of dying young (100 years). In other words, the modes of the belief distributions are relatively accurate, but the tails of the belief distributions are significantly ‘fatter’ than the corresponding tails of distributions obtained from demographic data. Our results are robust to variations in belief elicitation techniques, and to assumptions underlying normative longevity forecasts. The results have implications for a range of questions of economic behavior—including intertemporal choice, consumption smoothing, saving, and risk management.

To An Athlete Dying Youngby A.E. HousmanThe time you won your town the raceWe chaired you through the market-place;Man and boy stood cheering by,And home we brought you shoulder-high.To-day, the road all runners come,Shoulder-high we bring you home,And set you at your threshold down,Townsman of a stiller town.Smart lad, to slip betimes awayFrom fields were glory does not stayAnd early though the laurel growsIt withers quicker than the rose.Eyes the shady night has shutCannot see the record cut,And silence sounds no worse than cheersAfter earth has stopped the ears:Now you will not swell the routOf lads that wore their honours out,Runners whom renown outranAnd the name died before the man.So set, before its echoes fade,The fleet foot on the sill of shade,And hold to the low lintel upThe still-defended challenge-cup.And round that early-laurelled headWill flock to gaze the strengthless dead,And find unwithered on its curlsThe garland briefer than a girl's.Podcast

This paper examines the factors explaining the very different relationship between anthropometric shortfall and child mortality in South Asia and Sub Saharan Africa. While in the former, very high rates of anthropometric shortfall coexist with comparatively lower child mortality rates, rates of anthropometric shortfall in Sub Saharan Africa are much lower, yet under five mortality is much higher than in South Asia. This puzzle is examined using a panel data set of undernutrition, mortality, and their correlates. The analysis suggests that the unusually high rates of anthropometric shortfall in South Asia are partially due to the use of a US¡based reference standard which appears to generate misleading international comparisons of undernutrition. The very high rates of under five mortality in Africa seem to be mostly due to very high fertility, high and rising HIV prevalence, and a possible multiplicative interaction of risk factors.
