Frank Weed, CEO of Panther National, joined Rob Thomas on the Club + Resort Talks podcast to discuss everything from the Jack Nicklaus/Justin Thomas-designed golf course to the spectacular clubhouse that's planned for the community. Swiss skiing legend Dominik Senn is creating a world-class experience in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Also on the podcast: Palmetto Bluff announced plans for a new Coore & Crenshaw golf course. Sited on approximately 500 acres in South Carolina Lowcountry and estimated to open Winter 2025-26, the yet-to-be-named course's first phase of construction will include the golf course, a maintenance facility and temporary amenities, with a clubhouse planned for a second phase. A bunker renovation is elevating the golf experience at this Tennessee club. Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn. enlisted Kris Spence and his team to improve bunker playability and drainage across the course. Spence and Superintendent Ryan Blair relied on a careful study of old aerial photos, course maps, and Donald Ross' original drawings to preserve the integrity of the original design. And last, but not least … Happy 25th Birthday to Mizner Country Club! The Grande Clubhouse, a two-story hub designed in old-world style, will soon undergo extensive renovations beginning in June 2025. This update will bring a fresh look and enhanced functionality to Mizner's gathering spaces, including: Lobby, Men's & Ladies' Bathrooms, One Mile Bar & Grill, The Dining Room, New Outside Covered Terrace, and Kitchen Upgrades.
Mark Bado, General Manager/COO of Mizner Country Club in Delray Beach, Fla. joins the Club + Resort Talks podcast to discuss plans for a comprehensive renovation of its main clubhouse, with construction slated to begin in June 2025. The renovation will encompass key areas of the clubhouse, enhancing the facility's aesthetic appeal and functionality. It will be designed to ensure members enjoy an elevated experience. The renovation will focus on several areas, including: – Lobby: A refreshed, modern design to create a welcoming first impression for all members and guests. – Men's & ladies' bathrooms: Upgraded amenities designed to provide increased comfort and style. – One Mile Bar & Grill: A reimagined space with updates to elevate both dining and social experiences. – Dining room: Enhancements that will further enrich culinary offerings and the overall dining experience. – New outside covered terrace: Adjacent to the One Mile Bar & Grill, this outdoor addition will provide new opportunities for alfresco dining and social gatherings. – Kitchen upgrades: New state-of-the-art kitchen equipment will better support both banquet and à la carte services. The walk-in cooler/freezer relocation will streamline the kitchen layout, improving efficiency and accommodating the increased demand for expanded services. Bado noted, “This marks another milestone in our ever-expanding commitment to offering our members services that exceed expectations. The main clubhouse has long served as a place for comfort, socialization, and the enjoyment offered by our superior culinary staff. We are confident these updates will elevate the quality and functionality of our facilities. These upgrades will also solidify Mizner Country Club's position as a premier country club for its members and guests, offering both enhanced amenities and a luxurious atmosphere.” Also on the podcast: The development of a proposed Sports Illustrated Resort in Tuscaloosa, Ala. has been put on hold after the city council opted to delay the project during their latest meeting. This decision comes in response to strong opposition from residents, which was voiced during a recent public hearing. Concerns raised by the community primarily centered around the design of the resort, infrastructure issues, and the potential increase in traffic. The development faced significant pushback from locals who felt the current proposal did not adequately address these concerns. Residents highlighted the need for additional due diligence on various aspects of the project, including the hotel's design and the anticipated traffic impact. Lastly, Sweetens Cove Golf Club, a 9-hole course in South Pittsburg, Tenn. known for its cult following and distinctive approach to golf, is set to expand. While the main course will remain at nine holes, the club is adding a par-3 short course along with a range of new amenities aimed at enhancing its appeal to traveling golfers. The expansion includes stay-and-play cabins, a restaurant, a distillery, a putting green, a fishing dock, and a skeet shooting range, designed to create a comprehensive destination experience. The original architects of Sweetens Cove, Rob Collins and Tad King, will return to design the new short course. Known for their work at Landmand in Nebraska, their new design will emphasize creativity and flexibility, allowing golfers to experience the course in multiple ways. Construction on the par-3 course is scheduled to begin in spring 2025, with an expected opening in 2026.

Adam Mizner & Damo Mitchell chatting about various aspects of Yang Taijiquan...
Episode: 1090 In which Edgar Allen Poe writes about conchology. Today, an act of plagiarism is not quite what it seems to be.
Adam Mizner & Damo Mitchell chatting about Taijiquan, Japanese culture, Karate, Qi development and a bunch of other stuff whilst they are in Tokyo. Of particular interest is the distinction between three forms of 'internal force' within these arts - body level practice, mind level skills and Qi development. One is the key method and the others become close methods that are not quite the true thing.
An episode from our colleagues at The Frontline Dispatch: Documenting the Siege of Mariupol 20 Days in Mariupol is an unflinching, first-hand account of the early days of Russia's invasion of the port city of Mariupol, which remains under Russian occupation to this day. Ukrainian-born director and journalist Mstyslav Chernov and his colleagues from the Associated Press were the last international journalists to remain in Mariupol as Russian troops attacked. His new film, from FRONTLINE and the AP, draws on Chernov's news dispatches and his reflections as he documented the devastation of his home country for the world to see. Chernov sat down with FRONTLINE editor-in-chief and executive producer Raney Aronson-Rath and editor and producer Michelle Mizner in February 2023, as we marked the grim anniversary of the war in Ukraine. In this episode of The FRONTLINE Dispatch, recorded at the Boston Public Library, Chernov recounts the decision to go to Mariupol, how he and Mizner created a documentary feature from his Pulitzer Prize-winning journalism, and what he hopes people will take away from the film — today, and in years to come. “I know that we form our understanding of the current events of the world around us by watching news and consuming news,” Chernov said. “ But [we] form our understanding of our past with documentary films… Film is a medium which carries meaning across time, for generations to come.” An earlier version of this episode was published in July. You can watch 20 Days in Mariupol on FRONTLINE's website, FRONTLINE's YouTube Channel, the PBS App, and the PBS Documentaries Prime Video Channel. In today's episode, we bring you a Q&A with filmmaker Mstyslav Chernov following the opening night screening of his film 20 DAYS IN MARIUPOL on July 14, 2023. Chernov is a Ukrainian video journalist for the Associated Press who captured unspeakable atrocities committed against Ukrainian civilians by Russian troops during their siege of the port town of Mariupol in Sprint 2022. This reporting, for which Chernov and his team were awarded the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service, is the basis for the film, which was produced by the AP and FRONTLINE PBS. The Q&A included the film's editor and producer Michelle Mizner of FRONTLINE and was moderated by CNN anchor John Berman. The screening was co-presented by the Ukrainian Institute of America, with an introduction by its executive director, Lydia Zaininger. Special thanks to Mstyslav Chernov, Michelle Mizner, John Berman, Lydia Zaininger, PBS Distribution, FRONTLINE PBS, Associated Press, and the Ukrainian Institute of America for making this event possible. “Ignorance of the law excuses no one from practicing it,” this is according to Mizner's most notable. It is always a smart move to educate yourself on the legal aspects to protect your business and your assets. According to our guest, Amanda Butler Schley, it is smart to seek legal advice during the early years of your business. Legal protection should be prioritized as your business grows. Tune in as Amanda shares her expert advice on tax and HR issues and even the legal backend of putting up your business. Who is Amanda Butler Schley? Amanda resides in Louisiana and works as a lawyer and is also a biz owner who spends her career inspiring entrepreneur clients to take fearless but educated risks in their business ventures. She is known as the “entrepreneurs' lawyer”. She eventually created her own law firm and continued working with entrepreneurs, providing them with legal advice around business aspects such as structuring entity property, HR issues, tax issues, operating agreements, etc. Amanda established her firm with the belief of having THE right team for the job is the most important factor in her business. Her daily 15–20-minute meetings should cover work-related agenda and the wellness of her team. Amanda's mindset encourages flexibility and diversity in the workplace. Amanda's Advice for Entrepreneurs According to Amanda, “There's no amount of protection against any taxes that are owed...so I say (legal advice of taxes) make sure you are paying all the taxes you should be paying.” One of the first steps for the first-time entrepreneur is to make sure taxes are filed properly whether or not you are selling goods online or in local stores. It is best to put on armor to protect you and your assets against fines and penalties. She encourages entrepreneurs to regularly book legal consultations to make sure your business is always complying to the law. Pull out Quotes: "The one issue with blazing your own path is that it gets a little lonely." "Every person likes to work a little bit differently and I think you let them work in the manner they want to work sometimes they bring you their best and if you create a construct that inhibits their flexibility you can end up not getting the best people." "People perform when they are much happier." "Regardless if they are an independent contractor or employee you need to have a contract with them that outlines the roles and duties and responsibilities." "There's no amount of protection against any taxes that are owed...so I say (legal advice of taxes) make sure you are paying all the taxes you should be paying..." Damo sits down with Adam Mizner of Heaven Man Earth Taiji to smoke cigars, drink whisky and chat about various aspects of the internal arts after they completed a month of practice in Bali, Indonesia. This was an informal chat where various topics were covered BUT we had a couple of issues: Firstly, there was an issue with Adam's mic which meant that it cut in and out. We had to edit the footage because of this and so some of Adam's parts were silent and so removed from the video. We managed to keep most of it though, but this is why you will see some edits in the footage when Adam is speaking. Secondly, as they became more drunk, so did the camera! This is why you will notice that it slips down in an inebriated slump towards the end of the discussion....Apologies for all this but still, we think it is a good and somewhat blunt chat between two friends at Christmas.

We're glad you're tuning in for the most informed conversations on Erie radio. On Tuesday, we had a conversation with our news partners at Erie News Now. We talked to some veterans such as Lisa Adams and Adam Snow, and some younger folks on the ENN team, including Elspeth Mizner, Ethan Kibbe, and Keelin Berrian. We learned their perspectives in reporting local news, and what they feel are stories that need to be told here.
As part of his 80th birthday celebrations in 2010, Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim looked back over his life and work, with Donald Macleod. The result is a fascinating retrospective of half a century of creativity, with the artist himself as tour guide. Along the way, he explodes a few myths about the inner workings of musical theatre. Sondheim starts by talking about his childhood, his parents' divorce, his near-adoption by the Hammerstein family and his apprenticeship with Oscar Hammerstein, the lyricist of Oklahoma! Then there's the rollercoaster ride of his early career: his first, abortive Broadway show; two amazing breaks, when he was commissioned to write the lyrics for first West Side Story, then Gypsy; his unhappy collaboration with Richard Rogers; and his major creative breakthrough with Company, a musical with situations and characters but no conventional plot, and the first appearance of characteristic Sondheim subject-matter - the virtual impossibility of forming good relationships. As one British critic observed, "It is extraordinary that a musical, that most trivial of forms, should be able to plunge as Company does, with perfect congruity, into the profound depths of human perplexity and misery.". Next, and in typical Sondheim fashion, Stephen expands the notion of what the musical could be, with razor-sharp language and cracking tunes to boot: Follies, in which a reunion of Ziegfield-style Follies stars in a derelict theatre becomes a metaphor for the death of the American dream; A Little Night Music, a musical about relationships written almost entirely in waltz-time, that spawned Sondheim's most famous song, 'Send in the Clowns'; and Pacific Overtures, a 'kabuki musical' with an all-Japanese cast - an exploration of the 19th-century westernization of Japan, seen from the Japanese perspective. Sweeney Todd is widely regarded as Sondheim's masterpiece, an extraordinarily powerful work which he has modestly described as "a small and scary evening about the need for revenge.". Sweeney Todd was a huge success and is widely performed today, from schools (in a special educational edition) to opera houses. Whereas Merrily We Roll Along, failed to catch the public mood. It is a tale of disintegrating friendships and compromised idealism, narrated, in a characteristic structural twist, backwards. Despite a marvellous score, it remains Sondheim's biggest flop to date. Among other topics, Sondheim also discusses his long-time collaboration with director Hal Prince, the logistics of working with an orchestrator, and the heart attack he suffered in 1979, just three weeks after the opening of Sweeney. Next, the musical that grew out of a painting; a tangled web of fairytales; and a positively murderous show about the assassins, and would-be-assassins, of US presidents. The painting in question is Seurat's hugely famous A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, and the work it inspired was the Pulitzer-prize-winning Sunday in the Park with George, a deeply personal show about the joys and the costs of creation. The fairytales are the ones familiar to every child, but in Into the Woods they are woven together in an extraordinarily intricate way, before completely unravelling in the second act. Assassins caused a huge furore when it was unveiled in 1990, not least because it happened to coincide with the opening salvo of the first Gulf War, Operation Desert Storm - under such circumstances, a show that climaxed with the assassination of JFK was bound to be interpreted as deeply unpatriotic. Sondheim also talks about the logistics of mounting a Broadway production, and the pleasures of "trancing out" during the creative process. Finally, Passion, a kind of reversal of the Beauty and the Beast myth, which Sondheim has described as "one long rhapsody, a straightforward, non-ironic love story"; The Frogs, a contemporary take on Aristophanes originally staged in the swimming pool at Yale University (with Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver in the chorus line); and Road Show, a musical about the Mizner brothers which proves the old adage that "musicals aren't written, they're re-written" - it's currently in its fourth incarnation.
A photo album from 1898 was the starting point for Sally to discover the amazing stories of a pioneer family who were instrumental in settling areas near San Francisco--The Mizners. In this episode you will hear about the seven Mizner children, some of the exploits of two who became quite famous, and the interesting story of the middle kid Henry-- the main subject of the photo album. He wasn't as well known as his younger brothers but his work impacted many people in a positive way and attracted a young society lady to fall in love with him. Their love story is remarkable and was truly one of "love over money".

Click to see the full video.Since the establishment of Wadia Associates more than 45 years ago, Dinyar Wadia and his dedicated team of designers have earned a reputation for designing and building high-end homes, gardens, and interiors. Over the years, they have helped sculpt the local environment to become an important regional proponent of Classicism. Their skillful design sensibilities have provided a seamless fit of their traditionally-styled homes into the eclectic fabric of Fairfield County, Westchester County, Rhode Island, Southern California, Boulder, CO, and now, Florida. Although avowed New Classicists, Wadia Associates have a pluralistic approach to traditional design that is not rooted in a slavish imitation of the past. More appropriately, it is based upon reinterpreting the past and updating it for the present. And while all of their designs feature the classic proportions and exquisite details of houses from a bygone age, the firm is still able to incorporate all the amenities and needs of a modern American family. As Dinyar is fond of saying, “It is traditional architecture for the modern world.” Our guest is Peter Michalsky, Head of Marketing and Business Development for Wadia Associates. With over 40 years in the architect and planning industry, Wadia Associates has earned a reputation for designing and building high-end homes, gardens and interiors. When reputation is not enough, to win new business you need a technology edge.We asked Pete...Beyond using technology to communicate your designs, how else are you using technology in your projects?"Regarding tech, we're also getting a lot of requests for interesting features. We just completed a recessed flat screen on a lift that rises out of the patio for a home on the water in Greenwich. We're getting ton of requests for completely integrated home kits that incorporate security, HVAC, product automation, etc. We can expand on that with some interesting examples.""As for VHNW and UHNW, they are changing a bit. They are gravitating to bigger lots up here, with more outbuildings, guest quarters, sports complexes, and compound-like objectives. In Palm Beach, they are asking for more West Indies and Bermuda styles, because every other house is Mizner inspired Spanish/Moorish/Gothic styles and they want to be different. As classicists, we like both but we're seeing a trend. Everyone wants the indoors and outdoors to blend seamlessly, which has been going on for some time, but it is the first thing they talk about."Use the Meeting ID: http://zoom.us/j/92135931351 Or, binge watch on: Youtube. The Glitter Island Gang hang out with friend Brian Sebby to explore openings for musical improv shows!
Welcome to Episode 51 of the RetroWDW Podcast: "Horizons - Part 3: The Legacy" - We appreciate your support and hope you have been enjoying each and every episode. Be sure to check out some of our previous shows. Listen to Horizons Part 1 - The PrologueListen to Horizons Part 2 - The Promise Corrections We had a correction about The Living Seas from @Futureport on Twitter, the name we were looking for was 'Moon Pool'. Last month, we discussed Mizner's - We had @DisneyFiedAsh tweet us about a Mizner's tour and his pet monkey! The people in the Mesa Verde scene from Horizons are brought up and their ages...interesting topic. Joe is up next, telling us that the Seal is connected to Carousel of Progress with the name, Rover. Listener Mail The mail bag is full and we love that! Every month, you can possibly get on the show, so be sure to write us! Jimmy wrote in to discuss some old souvenir items you would find in Tomorrowland. The bulb spinner and Spacewarp Toy Coaster were somewhat rare, but available places other than Disney. We get into these things and some other items being sold at WDW. Shaun wants to know if Morgana was the name of the fortune teller at the Fiesta Fun Center. Well, How tells us about this fortune machine and directed us to a Widen Your World article. Michael McClure is up next, letting us know about his binge listening and a big thank you for taking him back. BREAKING NEWS: We have discussed this in the past, but we now have confirmation on Stormalong Bay and the real fish tank styled pool. Patrick and I discussed a river ride with freshwater fish and snorkeling - think lazy river. This is the only pool of the three that has a loop. In May 1990, Patrick heard from a lifeguard that the fish wouldn't make it through the night - so they ditched the idea. This was in Birnbaum's though! David is up next and he stayed there, during this time period. The letter is from the GM of the resort, Antonio Torres. Super good stuff and a huge thanks to all of our sleuths on the case. Thank you for all the emails, tweets and comments you have sent our way. We try to respond to almost everything and do our best to pick unique questions for the show. [listenerfeedback] Audio Rewind Our audio rewind this month turned out to be Food Rapper from Food Rocks! Voiced by Tone Loc - Thank you for all the guesses and emails. We have a winner! RetroMagic We spend some time updating everybody on RetroMagic - This two day event is coming soon and tickets are on sale now! We also have some exciting news from MagicYourBand.com - they have some great covers for your Magic Band that feature RetroWDW, LBVHS & RetroMagic. Check them out! Main Topic Horizons: Part 3 - The Legacy We finalize the ride this month, as the last episode was just insanely long and had to be cut off. Todd gets us back in the ride vehicles and we talk about choosing your own ending. How has everything worked out in detail, as to how this worked as a ride.... Ted even chimes in with some official wording on how all of this functioned day in and day out, using the Horizons Ride Control System manual. Very techy stuff, part numbers, duty cycles and so much - insanely detailed. The Legacy though...We discuss our own personal rides and recollections related to Horizons. The closure is brought up, with how it was open, then closed then reopened. Disney World didn't bring much fanfare for closures, but Test Track being delayed kept Horizons opened even longer. Todd gets us talking about the Mesa Verde Times - which is an amazing story of documentation and danger! We hope from these efforts, Disney has learned to document better and also take note of the fanbase, as people have emotional connections to these attractions. The auction scene is a huge part of this closure, as we discuss and go over how much of Horizons went right to the trash bin. Todd tells us about a few products that feature the distinctive Horizons orange scent: My Shaldon Air Fresheners & Pacific Shaving Cream. 1983 Horizons Cast Member Guide With the help of Ted Linhart, we've reconstructed the original cast member guide that details each and every scene in Horizons. Corrections Rick wrote in, regarding The Timekeeper. At one point in the film, The Timekeeper mentions something about “If you had wings”. We find out if that was intentional or not from the director himself. Connor wrote in discussing “Century 3” and “Future Probe”. The vintage book called Horizons is discussed and some World’s Fair snippets as well. We discuss the possible connections to WDW, EPCOT Center and more. Read the Horizons Book by Norman Bel Geddes via Archives.org Listener Mail The mail bag is full and we love that! Every month, you can possibly get on the show, so be sure to write us! Park wrote in asking about Mizner’s and where the name came from. How discusses who it was actually named after and why… Adam asked us about the old Teacher Center brochures we mentioned some episodes back. They are here and here and are very snazzy – enjoy! If you have any of the Teacher Center materials, please contact us as we’d love to add them to the galleries and JT would really appreciate it! Ryan wrote in about aquatic areas at WDW – he really enjoys River Country! Ryan more specifically wants to know about the possibility of live fish at Stormalong Bay. We discuss the possibility of this, our knowledge on pools Stormalong Bay in general. Thank you for all the emails, tweets and comments you have sent our way. We try to respond to almost everything and do our best to pick unique questions for the show. Questions, Comments & Concerns We love feedback and hearing your memories! Drop us a line at podcast@retrowdw.com or call us and leave a voice mail at 978-71-RETRO. You can also find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Audio Rewind Our audio rewind this month turned out to be The American Adventure! (Listen to Episode 9 – Building the Golden Dream – American Adventure) We have a winner! Congratulations Heather Manning – you win the VHS copy of ‘A Day at The Magic Kingdom’. You can pick the version you want too! If you think you know the answer to this month’s audio rewind, email us! contest@retrowdw.com – This month, the winner will be getting a Vacation Kingdom Poster – All entries due 7/8/2019 and a random winner will be selected. For a Summer Bonus Prize, drop JT an email if you would like to win a new 6-month old ‘Speedramp’ Onesie. This doesn’t fit my son and is blue with the yellow Speedramp logo on the front. jt@lbvhistory.org Main Topic Horizons: Part 2 – The Promise The moment you have been waiting for is finally here. The classic attraction from EPCOT Center is finally getting time on our podcast and we couldn’t be more excited. Horizons is here and get ready: this is going to take more than one episode! For Part 2 – The Promise, this is the meat and potatoes episode, ride throughs, scene discussions and so much more. Our discussion starts though with a simple questions: Was Horizons under construction on opening day? Well we get into this with some aerial photography (footings, construction after opening). From here though, we start this main topic off walking through the front door. No waiting around and no discussion about the company who made the seals on the front door – although I’m sure some of you would enjoy that fact. The main entrance had an amazing quote, which has been a controversy for many, many years. The Disney Company misquoted it, many people claim ownership, but we have some BREAKING NEWS on the topic of “If you can dream it, You can do it“. The discussion continues and we discuss the queue, known as Future Port. How and Todd paint such a great picture throughout this ride, but be sure to look below at the various galleries and images we have on the site. Each scene is gone through in detail this episode, taking you back on the ride. How gives us a little behind the scenes information and Todd gets technical with some various facts and figures. This episode is the one you have been asking for with music, sound effects and everything in between. If you are a fan, have a foggy memory, never ridden or always dreamed of this ride coming back, you have to listen to this episode multiple times. This is one of our longest episodes, but it sure doesn’t seem like it as you listen. Enjoy! 1983 Horizons Cast Member Guide We’ve reconstructed the original cast member guide that details each and every scene in Horizons. Sup Nerds? April is Autism Awareness month, so I wanted to bring on someone that could help teach myself and my guests a bit about Autism and what it’s like to visit Disney with someone diagnosed with Autism. To do that, I invited my good friend and Registered Behavior Technician Elle onto the show. After a brief intro about Mizner’s Lounge, we discuss Autism, what it’s like for people with Autism to visit Walt Disney World, the accommodations that Disney offers to those families, and how you can be a good neighbor to those guests.
