A palliative care worker who had a best-selling book—her name is Bronnie Ware— she wrote a book that got translated into 31 different languages around the world, called "The Top Five Regrets of the Dying: A Life Transformed by the Dearly Departing." Her book is a series of stories of people that she took care of. She was in palliative care and had a window into their lives. Some of them were in their 90s, some of them were in their 30s and younger. And all of them had some similar regrets, and it's one of the things she talks about, especially in her book. So that's what Stephen Covey talks about for managing anything is: begin with the end in mind. So why not do it with your life? Because we know it has a beginning and an end, and if we try to pretend otherwise, then that's a kind of ostrich philosophy—putting one's head in the sand and just forget about it. It's better to be fully cognizant and prepare for death. She points out that you can have a much fuller life, actually, when you go with eyes open and don't consider death or the subject taboo. This is pointed out—that it's taboo or something that we stuff psychologically—meaning we just put it out of our mind and into our subconscious, and then it comes out in very unhealthy ways, by a conversation with Yudhiṣṭhira and Yamarāja in the Mahābhārata that everyone's familiar with, I'm sure. This is in the context of the Pāndavas becoming uncharacteristically thirsty and coming to drink water, being warned by a stork—is it a stork or a pelican? Or what kind of bird is it? A stork? Okay, a stork—that said, "Don't drink the water, it's poison," but they were so thirsty, they drank it anyway. But Yudhiṣṭhira abided by the warning, and the stork said, "First you answer my questions, then you can drink." And one of the questions the stork asked... Ed Jackson says he has lived two lives. For ten years he was a professional rugby player, who was defined by his physicality and performance. But in 2017, at a family friend's barbecue, an accident ended this old life forever. He dived into a swimming pool, not realising it was three feet deep. On the way to the hospital he had to be resuscitated three times. Not long after, he was told he'd never walk again.Incredibly, just three years from this moment, Ed was standing on the world's highest trekking peak, Aconagua. He shares this rollercoaster story, from the initial devastation of his prognosis to the slow flicker of hope, from long rehabilitation to a level of recovery he didn't think was possible. It was a fundraising expedition to Snowdon that then sent his life in an entirely new direction, when he saw the opportunity to use his experience to help others in a similar boat. Now, as co-founder of the Millimetres 2 Mountains foundation, such is the purpose he has found, he says he no longer regrets the accident that led him here. Hosted on Acast. Now, if you're not sure what freeride skiing is, it involves navigating the most challenging mountain terrain, and due to its dangerous nature, it's a sport for only the most highly skilled skiers. One wrong move could be fatal. What is incredible about Hedvig - and one of the reasons I was keen to invite her onto the show - is her general outlook on life: the approach she takes to following her passion and living her truth.   In our conversation, we cover so many different topics that - although discussed in the context of being a World Champion skier - I believe, have huge relevance for each and every one of us. We talk about conquering negative thoughts, how to manage anxiety, the importance of exploring our own personal limits, and how we can best overcome fear, and turn our struggles into growth.   Hedvig shares her inspiring journey to becoming world champion, and we discuss how pursuing our own passions can lead to a more meaningful and purposeful life. We explore the rituals Hedwig uses to prepare for competition, the importance of trusting our instincts in critical moments and how spending time in nature has shaped her perspective on life and death.   We also discuss why Hedwig chooses to work with an Ayurvedic health coach, why she has decided to stop competing despite being the reigning world champion, and she shares a powerful visualisation exercise that she uses to make difficult decisions. This conversation is a masterclass in purposeful living, following your passion, and the power of self-reflection. Hedvig's insights on pushing limits, overcoming fear, and living with intention will inspire you to approach your own challenges with renewed courage and clarity. Gerald highlights the value of long-standing relationships between clients and advisors, with Tina reflecting on her pride in working with clients for decades. Episode 84: Mary Dibble lives a life of purpose

Compassionate Climb

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 11, 2024 37:43

Mary Dibble is a life coach who helps busy moms live better lives by prioritizing themselves and their needs, allowing them to show up fully not just for themselves but others, too.  Her life started with adversity that taught her a great deal of resilience. Growing up with financial insecurity with a single mom and an absentee father, she had low self-esteem and felt like she was desperate for attention from others. This led her down the path of substance abuse. Through finding a new connection with spirituality and being saved by God, she was motivated to become sober, though this was not an easy path for her. She found herself in an abusive relationship but thankfully was able to leave it. Her next relationship ended when she became pregnant and refused to have an abortion. However, she says her son saved her life. He was the biggest motivation she had ever had to finally get sober and put her life on the track for her success and healing.  Since then, she received her own life changing mentoring through a life coach, became a life coach herself, found her soulmate, and had had two more children. Her life has completely turned around and she credits that to the many turning points she has had that pushed her further and further along the path, closer to her goals. By learning that she was worthy of what she wanted out of life, she has found she's become a better mom and partner, and has been able to help others do the same. Learn more about Mary's amazing story on this week's episode of the Compassionate Climb Podcast! Key highlights:  Her son was her most powerful motivator to get sober and she has been ever since. “He taught me love I never really knew existed, he gave me purpose”. When she started focusing on the fact that she was the common denominator in many of the difficult aspects of her life, she realized she needed to work on herself and change things. This was pushed further by her experience with getting life coaching. It helped her realize that she was worthy of the things she wanted out of life. “I have a wonderful, healthy marriage that I never thought possible.” She does remind us that no relationship is perfect, however! Healthy relationships are all about good communication, compromising, and doing things for each other. She had always had a dream of helping people and receiving life coaching helped show her a potential path to that dream. She wanted to show people that they don't have to be defined by their past or history and that they can change their lives. People, moms especially, need to prioritize their needs more. “You can't pour from an empty cup”, Mary says, and notes that it's difficult to take care of others when you're burnt out and exhausted.  She even says that many of us “hinder ourselves from really living life”.  She worried people wouldn't take her seriously because of her lack of a higher education. But she learned that she does have value to give to others through her own experiences in life. She is constantly learning and taking more classes to become a better life coach and help as many people as possible. Website

How do you build a life of purpose and resilience? Join us as we explore this profound question through the lens of Jesus's transformative teachings in the Gospel of Luke. This week, we emphasize the importance of constructing our lives on the solid foundation of Jesus's teachings, such as the Beatitudes and the radical command to love our enemies.Discover the revolutionary nature of Jesus's Sermon on the Plain in Luke 6:27-36, where we're challenged to bless those who curse us and love our enemies. Applying these teachings in our daily lives, especially with difficult neighbors or unfair bosses, is no easy feat. But Jesus's call to turn the other cheek and give generously, even to those who wrong us, was groundbreaking during his time and remains so today. This radical love reflects God's unconditional love for us and urges us to live visibly compassionate lives, even when it's inconvenient or uncomfortable. We'll also dive into what it means to build a lasting foundation on Jesus, moving beyond material success to embrace kingdom values and purposeful living. Real success, as Jesus taught, lies in humility, reliance on God, and using our resources to serve others. We'll discuss the importance of generosity—not just with our finances, but in our actions and choices. By taking proactive steps to live out Jesus's teachings, redefining success, extending forgiveness, and releasing bitterness, we can build a resilient and enduring foundation. Let's support each other in aligning our lives with Jesus's teachings and take one tangible step towards a life of true purpose and blessing this week.Support the showIf you enjoyed this episode, consider subscribing to Madison Church on your favorite podcast platform.
