Have you ever had a great idea, wanted to try something new or had something you believed in-but the world said you couldn't do it or it won't work? Ever struggled with uncertainty or self doubt?? Well so did 3x Emmy winning talent Crystal Chappell. Crystal is a powerhouse actress you've seen on Days Of Our Lives. She was Dr. Carly Manning - 1 part of the super couple Bo and Carly. She was also on Guiding Light as Olivia Spencer, trailblazing as one of daytimes first lesbian characters with a ground breaking storyline featuring a same sex love story with Jessica Leccia's character Natalia Rivera —also lovingly nicknamed Otalia. At a time when web series and streaming weren't terms anyone knew about or understood. Crystal wanted to bring a whole Daytime series onto the web. Bringing ANY show onto the web was unheard of-let alone a traditional soap . It simply hadn't been done before. Also, creating a series from scratch and taking it all the way to fruition was not something Crystal had done before. Crystal was faced doubters and some who would even try and take her down. On top of that she had a long list of challenges —everything from learning the legal procedures of putting a show together, technical know how to the endless challenges and rules of production--all the while she was a full time actress. These are staggering mountains to climb but she believed in her concept so much she took it on. What became of her vision was a digital series called Venice, in which she created, wrote, produced and end up taking multiple awards like the prestigious Emmy. Today, our conversation takes us beyond the daytime arena, and you'll hear some of the herculean challenges that Crystal faced. She will share how she created new pathways not only for herself but for an entire genre. And she talks about some of the moments that made her realize her body of work had transcended into something impactful and life changing for others. Listen in and you'll be inspired and empowered by what Crystal has accomplished but also how you can also take on new challenges and overcome the doubters. Learn more about your ad choices. I’m so honored and delighted to welcome one of my closest friends whom I truly admire, love, and adore, our friendship spans over three decades., Today, I welcome Emmy Award-winning Actress, Director, Producer, and Author Crystal Chappell.Crystal is currently working on the successful soap opera digital series “Venice”, which is going into its 7th season, She’s also working on, “It girls on the stoop” and “Beacon hill”. BIO: Chappell's first daytime appearance was as a day player on All My Children in 1989. In a July 2006 interview in industry magazine Soap Opera Digest, Chappell recalled actor Maurice Benard helping her through her first scenes. After a brief run on Santa Barbara in 1990, (she played a classmate of Eden's who died of an ice overdose), Chappell was cast as Dr. Carly Manning Alamain (Katerina von Leuschner) on Days of Our Lives. She portrayed the role from June 1990 to October 1993. Chappell and future husband Michael Sabatino met on Days of Our Lives, where he played villain Lawrence Alamain.Chappell was front-burner for most of her time on the show, first when her character Carly was featured in a romance with lead character Bo Brady (Peter Reckell, Robert Kelker-Kelly), and then in a complex, Byzantine storyline that featured her heretofore unknown secret identity as a European blueblood. The story culminated in a controversial plot that had Carly buried alive by Lawrence's aunt Vivian (Louise Sorel)Chappell's next role was as Maggie Carpenter on One Life to Live from October 1995 through September 1997. The character of Maggie was created for Chappell, and she was again paired with a romantic lead on the show, Max Holden (James DePaiva). Her main storyline revolved around the tension between her burgeoning romantic relationship and her plans to profess vows as a nun. From July 2, 1999 to September 18, 2009, she played complex villainess/anti-heroine Olivia Spencer on Guiding Light. The role of Olivia was initially only intended to be a short-term role, but Chappell's portrayal was so popular she was signed to a contract. She won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Daytime Drama for her work as Olivia in 2002 and was nominated again in the same category in 2005 and 2006. In 2007, she earned her first nomination in the Outstanding Lead Actress category.
Leslie and Crystal dive deep as they discuss Crystal's path from her character Olivia on Guiding Light to producing her very successful web series "Venice." Crystal has taken control of her career by launching Open book Productions, a digital production company., which is currently making their first feature film. But that's not all, Crystal also co-founded the streaming platform "Real Women's Network." This episode is packed with inspiration and information.More about Crystal:Three-time Emmy Award Winning actress Crystal Chappell never stops! She won an Emmy in 2002 for Outstanding Supporting Actress as Olivia on CBS-TV’s “Guiding Light” as well as a 2011 Emmy for Outstanding Special Class Short Format for her web-series “Venice,” which she wrote, produced and created and a 2014 Emmy for Outstanding New Approaches Drama Series for “Venice.” The web-series “Venice” revolves around a warm community of people who reside in Venice Beach, California. In 2009 Ms. Chappell founded Open Book Productions, a successful digital media company. Recognizing that media was moving in a new direction she developed and executed an in-house subscription-based business model to monetize the web. Using motion picture production techniques, Emmy winning talent and state of the art technology she created and stars in the award winning Venice the Series, the digital pilot The Grove, and most recently she partnered with Bella Productions for season 2 of Beacon Hill. Season 7 of “Venice” will film in 2021.Crystal continued to break new ground by Partnering with Perfect Features in 2016 to star and produce Open Book Productions first film, A Million Happy Nows.
