Mark Vicente is an author, speaker, and award-winning Writer/Director/Producer from Johannesburg, South Africa. His passion for filmmaking began early, taking his first photograph at age four, he worked his way up through the ranks of the camera department to become a director. Because of the atrocities in his native South Africa, he found himself propelled to question certain fundamental assumptions at a very young age. Beliefs about human behavior, morality, cosmology, existentialism and mysticism. Unifying his love of science, philosophy and film-making, Mark's dream of creating cinema to inspire and provoke thought began to emerge with the creation of “What the BLEEP do we Know?!” Several books have been written about the film's remarkable grassroots marketing campaign, which led to its unprecedented success. Later, Mark released ‘Encender el Corazon', a film about the rampant kidnapping epidemic in Mexico. It was bittersweet victory; while the film touched many people deeply, it was by association supporting the criminal enterprise NXIVM. Mark made the difficult decision to pull the film from distribution and, with a small band of whistleblowers, exposed their criminal behavior, resulting in multiple arrests and prosecutions. This journey is captured in the 15 part HBO Documentary Series “THE VOW”. He has since developed a keen and passionate interest in exposing the coercive and duplicitous environments of high-control groups. He is currently in post-production on ‘Empathy Not Included' (The Narcissist's Playbook) a feature-length documentary exploring one of the most pervasive and often misunderstood mental pathologies in our culture: Narcissism. Shot in seven countries and viewed through the lens of four self-confessed, self-aware malignant narcissists who openly share the secrets of how they operate with uncensored candor, the film follows their disturbing stories, juxtaposed with the growing body of wisdom from victims, survivors, scientists, and mental health professionals. Welcome back fellow spiritually-homeless, skeptical seekers! You're in for a treat. Why? Well, the Skeptical Shaman podcast is kicking off 2025 with a real bang: no more walking on eggshells, clenching our jaws, or tip-toeing through the metaphorical tulips of cognitive dissonance, coercive control, or mass formation psychosis!Said another way? "Behold the field in which we grow our f*cks, for it is barren!"To kick off this new season of the pod, host Rachel White (of TOTEM Readings) interviews award-winning film maker and NXIVM cult survivor/ whistleblower Mark Vicente, prominently featured in the HBO documentary series 'The Vow'. But Mark's not just a "cult survivor"-- he's actually a whole, dynamic human being that is currently leveraging his considerable talents as an author, speaker, and award-winning Writer/Director/Producer to create the film ‘Empathy Not Included' (The Narcissist's Playbook), a feature-length documentary exploring one of the most pervasive and often misunderstood mental pathologies in our culture: narcissism. Shot in seven countries and viewed through the lens of four self-confessed, self-aware malignant narcissists who openly share the secrets of how they operate with uncensored candor, 'Empathy Not Included' follows their disturbing stories, juxtaposed with the growing body of wisdom from victims, survivors, scientists, and mental health professionals.Previously, Mark unified his love of science, philosophy and film-making to create the wildly successful independent film, “What the BLEEP do we Know?!”. As he tells Chino Y Chicano host Enrique Cerna, it's a journey that began at Washington State University where Bobo was a standout wide receiver in th early 90s. After deciding to leave WSU after his junior year for a shot at a pro career, Bobo found himself facing challenge and adversity. Still, he pursued what he wanted to do most in his life, a career as a writer and producer in Hollywood, receiving mentoring from an Oscar winning actor, and discovering a new attitude and purpose in life. If you're doing anything in film right now, over the past year or so, you've probably come across a plethora of posts and threads written by filmmakers bemoaning the broken model of independent filmmaking today. If you can even raise a budget to make a film, how do you even break even once you've completed it? Unless you're friends with an A lister or B lister or your uncle's a billionaire, you're pretty much consigned to the graveyard of filmmakers who give up having bet their house on their passion project. So goes the tenor of these observations. But could there be an alternative to this picture of gloom and doom? Recently I came across a filmmaker who not only thinks there is, he's proving there is. For his film Woodbridge, writer, producer director Stephen Meier had the inspired idea to cast influencers who could act. Why is that a smart idea? Because these influencers have a big and dedicated following. I got together with Stephen to find out more about his business strategy and of course his journey from script to screen and beyond. ==Boost your mental performance in a single shotI was looking for a way to boost my energy levels, without resorting to more coffee, tea or snacks, when I came across Magic Mind. This unique energy drink comes in these handy, little bottles and works like a shot. Lindsey Anderson Beer wrote and executive produced the hit Netflix original dramedy Sierra Burgess is a Loser before making the jump to direct the horror genre with Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, starring Jackson White and Natalie Alyn Lind. The story is based on an untold chapter of Stephen King's self-proclaimed, scariest property of all time. Up next, she will helm Paramount's Sleepy Hollow reboot as the writer, director, and producer. She also has several projects in various phases of development and production, including Disney's live action remake of Bambi, New Line's Hello Kitty, and Universal's Fast and Furious spinoff, which she wrote with Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Under her production banner Lab Brew, Lord of the Flies will be directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Patrick Ness for Warner Bros."For me, I don't start a project unless I have a really clear understanding of who the main characters are and why this is a journey that's necessary for them to take. And why are these both the best and the worst people to be in this series? That's the question I ask myself all the time because you need to know: What are their strengths? What are their weaknesses? What are the dramatic tension points going to be where these specific people can really succeed or really fail in this scenario?I love people who are passionate, and Quentin Tarantino is just so passionate. And I've never been in a writer's room or even really in any kind of development experience where a director was just so passionate and so full of kind of energetic ideas. And that was really inspiring. Somebody who just completely knows their own point of view and gets excited by their own ideas is just fun to watch.I was about to shoot Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. I was finishing up my work on Star Trek 4, which I had to leave to do Pet Sematary, so I had been working with J. J. Abrams closely for a while on the script, and so I just asked if he had any advice, in terms of just practical stuff on set. And I mean, I've been on so many sets, but still, he's a director who's done so many projects. So he did give me some great advice just about, you know, making it through such long days and taking time for yourself and just kind of keeping your sanity that was kind of the focus of the advice. And he was just very generous and sweet about that.”www.imdb.com/name/nm5170222/www.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

And could a man write and direct like a really funny Barbie movie? Of course. But do I think that a man could have ever created the phenomenon that is Barbie? I don't. Because it was so infused with her authentic female experience in the patriarchy. And she put so much of that into it. And that's really what shines in that movie. And I think that movies like that where you kind of trust in one human creative and let their artistry and humanity shine is when you create these standout pieces of art that really capture imagination and attention.I just don't know why humans always seem intent on replacing themselves. You know, whether it's the industrial revolution or now, the AI revolution, we just can't help ourselves. But I think we need, we need to have we need to have strong regulations in place because there are certainly lots of professions where we certainly will be able to replace people with AI, but why? Why would we want to do that? Having a sense of purpose and the pride we all get from working, regardless of what that job is, is obviously so important. In addition to the money, I don't understand sometimes where people's motivations come from."www.imdb.com/name/nm5170222/www.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

Under her production banner Lab Brew, Lord of the Flies will be directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Patrick Ness for Warner Bros."It's such a difficult and huge, huge, huge issue. And for me, it's absolutely not one-sided. And it's not a simple answer. Anybody who thinks that AI is going to completely save us is fooling themselves. And anybody who thinks that AI is just evil or harmful is also overlooking the very obvious benefits from drug and cancer research and other illnesses. And there are so many things that AI can help us solve very quickly that we don't yet have solutions to. That said, AI is made by us and it is filled with our own biases. And when you enable an incredibly smart, but biased and flawed thing to rule your life, that's never going to end up with a good outcome. So I think we need a lot of regulations and that we should be very scared of what happens when we allow AI to become too smart because at that point regulations aren't going to help. I honestly don't know if we've crossed that threshold. If we haven't, we're very close to crossing the threshold, in my opinion, of not being able to control what we've created, and that does scare me.For the creative process in particular, beyond the fact that it wouldn't make any sense for people to use AI because you can't copyright it, so studios and networks wouldn't own their own material, I can't even begin to tell you how many problems I see with using AI in the writing or directing process.I think science fiction is its own animal. This is why it has always been my first love. And it really allows you to think about our connection to the universe, to kind of be a futurist and think about what society could look like or has looked like. And I think there's no other genre for me, at least, where I feel like action and consequence and forecasting and imagination, all of those things can kind of come together in one story. Stories are inherently subjective. There's only one way to tell a great story and that is for the subject and the storyteller to have an authentic and strong point of view."www.imdb.com/name/nm5170222/www.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

So many experiments fail the first time or the second time or the third time. Also, so many startup companies in Silicon Valley fail and then they innovate and they innovate and they innovate and they become big hits. And I think it's the difference between what's called a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset where people think that they either have a fixed amount of talent or they believe that they have a growing amount of talent where more practice and more input can affect the outcome. And I don't believe that human beings have fixed talent. I believe that human beings have growing talent and that they shouldn't be so fearful of just trying and learning and growing."www.imdb.com/name/nm5170222/www.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Jeff Lieberman, Writer, Director, Producer, “BELLA! This Woman Belongs In The House” About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Jeff Lieberman, is an award-winning journalist, producer and filmmaker whose documentary films have won him world wide acclaim. His 2013 film entitled “Re-emerging: the Jews of Nigeria” got rave reviews at the world's most prestigious film festivals and was proclaimed by critics as one of the must-see documentaries of the year. In 2015 he released his celebrated film entitled, “The Amazing Nina Simone”, which had a hugely successful theatrical run in 10 countries and is widely considered to be THE definitive cinematic tribute to this legendary music artist. And now, our guest is about to release a monumentally important film about the first and the greatest female trailblazer in the history of American politics: the unstoppable force of nature known as Bella Abzug. In 1970, when America – and the world – was a patriarchy ruled by men, Bella Abzug challenged the status quo, running a groundbreaking grass roots campaign from the streets of Manhattan, that elevated her all the way to the halls of Congress from 1971 to 1977. With her irrepressible energy, fearless Bronx swagger, and captivatingly blunt oratorical frankness, she was determined to break up the “old boys' club”, and that she did. She battled for women's rights, seniors' rights, children's rights, gay rights, racial equality - in fact, she fought for civil rights for everyone. She fought vigorously against the Vietnam War. She endured the mounting forces from both the right and the left, and the powers of the Nixon Administration, the CIA, FBI, and of course, the media. The film is entitled, “Bella: This Woman's Place is in the House”, and it won the prestigious Library of Congress Ken Burns Prize for Film. This fascinating and compelling film includes never-before-seen home movies, audio diaries, newly-discovered news footage, and interviews with Hilary Clinton, Barbara Streisand, Shirley MacLaine, Lily Tomlin, Gloria Steinem, Marlo Thomas, and many more.
