This is Part 3 of a three part conversation Dominique and I had in March, 2024. In part 1 we talked about puzzle solving and this led to a great real life experience using back chaining that Dominique shared with us. e between forward chaining and back chaining. In Part 2 the spotlight was on rope handling. This week we are changing topics yet again. Dominique wanted to talk about agility. I begin this episode with an overview of clicker training. Clicker training has three phases. These phases don't have clear distinct lines separating one from the other. You aren't in phase one, and then you come to a demarcation line and you're in phase 2. Instead they merge one into the other. The first phase introduces the horse and the handler to clicker training. I use the six foundation lessons for this. Horse and handler learn are introduced to the use of marker signals; food as a reinforcer; loopy training; cues; chaining, and many other important concepts, principles, and teaching strategies. In phase 2 you use the foundation lessons to help teach the universals. We've talked about this in many of the podcasts. The universals are those activities which horses need to understand and be comfortable with regardless of the performance goals a handler may have. It doesn't matter if you ride English or western, or you don't ride at all, we all need to take care of our horse's feet. So foot care is an obvious universal. It's easy to think of other universals, activities we want our horses to be comfortable with - such as grooming haltering, and other husbandry activities. The foundation lessons make it much easier to teach these skills. Phase Two merges seamlessly into Phase Three. Phase Three begins to look at performance goals. What do you want to do with your horse? For some people what they want is a great relationship. Just being around their horse and taking care of him, is what they want. Using clicker training to create cooperative care is the main goal of training. Basic ordinary grooming becomes elevated to the level of performance. Medical care isn't something the horse tolerates. He becomes a consenting partner in whatever needs to be done. The goal is deep friendship. The training transform everyday tasks into Grand Prix level performance. In Phase Three we're also looking at skills needed for specific performance-related goals. One person may be interested in jumping, another dressage, a third person may like reining. All three riders need to know the basics of riding walk trot canter. And there may be many overlapping skills as you begin to explore your chosen sport, but if you are interested in jumping you may want to go to someone who specializes in this sport to help you set up gymnastic grid patterns that can teach a horse how to jump well. That's true for all the different sports. My area of interest is balance. If someone is starting into my work with an interest in classical dressage, they will find that our interests and goals are very much aligned. But that doesn't mean that you have to be interested in dressage to work with me. Those first two phases are designed to prepare you for your long term training goals. By the time you have taught your horse the universals that are important to you, you will know how to teach your horse new skills. You will know how to approach your performance goals constructionally. My role is not to direct you to a specific performance goal, but to support you as you explore a wide range of activities. Some of these may require specialized knowledge so you will need to seek out trainers who can help you with these goals. You may also discover that clicker training has already given you the teaching skills you need to succeed. That's what this week's conversation is about. Dominique wants to talk about agility. Let's see how that fits into this overall view of the three phases of clicker training.

Today's episode is about clicker training...for CATS. You don't often hear about training cats, but it's not only possible -- it's also not that hard to do! Clicker training can help you strengthen your bond with your cat, potentially solve behavior problems they may be having AND... wildly impress your friend, family and social media fans. Learn all the ins and outs of cat training from Dr. Marci Koski, founder of Feline Behavior Solutions. Dr. Marci L. Koski is a certified feline behavior and training consultant in Vancouver, Washington. She earned specialized and advanced certificates in Feline Training and Behavior from the Animal Behavior Institute, and established her business, Feline Behavior Solutions, in 2014. She also has a doctorate (Ph.D.) in Fishery and Wildlife Biology from Colorado State University and had a career as a biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for over ten years, where she worked towards the conservation and recovery of threatened and endangered species. Dr. Marci is also involved in the local cat rescue community in southwest Washington; she's a member of the Board of Directors for Furry Friends (a no-kill cats-only rescue) and worked with the Humane Society for Southwest Washington to design and implement their cat socialization program that took place in a local prison. Dr. Marci believes that the number of cats who are abandoned and/or euthanized in shelters can be significantly reduced if guardians better understand cat behavior and how to meet their cats' specialized needs. Keeping cats in homes and out of shelters is Dr. Marci's goal, and the mission of Feline Behavior Solutions. Thanks for listening! Check out our sponsor, PetHub for more great pet parent resources. This is Part 3 of a conversation that was sparked by the on-line coaching session that I host once a month for people in my on-line clinics. In Part 1 we talked about resets - what they are and how they can be used to help horses rebalance so they are more in sync with their handlers. In Part 2 this led to a discussion of shaping on a point of contact, the WWYLM lesson and visualizing your horse as a marching band. In part 3 explore some useful metaphors that help in understanding lateral work. We'll begin with Merry-Go-Rounds and then move on to railroad tracks. Dominique has been discovering how useful these images to help her understand lateral work. At the very end of the podcast I talk about the connection between the horse training and my children's books. Everything is connected to everything else. I hope you listen all the way to the end to understand the connections. Clicker training really is Modern Horse Training. It represents a shift in attitude towards horses. When I'm thinking about Modern Horse training I'm thinking about the contrast between today and that time when horses were beasts of burden. Our relationship with horses is different today. The reason why we have horses has changed. Our horses are our companions and our friends. They aren't pit ponies down in the coal mines forced to haul coal out of the mines. They aren't the London cab horses that were written about in Black Beauty. Thankfully, those days are behind us. We have the luxury to really examine our training and to update it to make sure that it really does work in the best interest of our horses. When I'm sharing clicker training, I want to touch more than the lead rope you hold in your hands. I want to touch your heart because that's how we truly, deeply connect to one another and change forever how people train horses. The children's books for me are part of that. So thank you for indulging me as I continue to talk about the Kenyon Bear Books. I encourage you to order them to see what they are about. Everything is connected to everything else. Dogs repeat behaviors that get them what they want. That's why positive reinforcement dog training focuses on rewarding your dog for the behaviors you want to see. If you give your dog a treat for giving you a paw, for example, your dog will be more likely to give you a paw in the future. But where do clickers and markers fit in? You may have heard of clicker training, also known as mark and reward training. Is it an unnecessary gimmick? Quite the opposite. A clicker (or marker) is a tool that can make positive reinforcement training more efficient. After being repeatedly associated with a treat or reward, a clicker becomes a conditioned reinforcer. Learn how clicker training can help you better and more effectively communicate with your dog during training sessions. What Is Clicker Training? Clicker training is the same as positive reinforcement training, with the added benefit of a clicker. A clicker is simply a small mechanical noisemaker. The techniques are based on the science of animal learning, which says that behaviors that are rewarded are more likely to be repeated in the future. So rather than focusing on what your dog is doing wrong, and taking good behavior for granted, clicker training flips the script and concentrates on what your dog is doing right. By telling your dog what to do, instead of what not to do, you can have an incredible effect on how your dog chooses to behave. The value of the clicker is that it tells your dog exactly which behavior you're rewarding. By clicking at the right time, you can “mark” the moment your dog did what you wanted. So rather than having to guess what you liked, the click tells your dog precisely what they did correctly. For example, if you're training your dog to sit, you would click at the moment your dog's butt hit the ground. What Is the Meaning of the Click? The clicker is merely a way to mark a moment. There is nothing magical about that specific noise, except that you likely never make it around your dog outside of training. Therefore, you can substitute anything as a marker as long as it's distinct from other ways you communicate with your dog. For example, you could snap your fingers, blow a whistle, or cluck your tongue. Many people use a marker word, like “Yes” or “Good.” For a hearing-impaired dog, you could use a light or a gentle tap on the shoulder. Of course, the click or other marker itself is meaningless until it's paired with a reward. The click simply indicates a reward is on the way. Although edible treats are the best incentive for most dogs, a reward is anything your dog values. So if your pup would rather work for a game of tug-of-war than a chunk of chicken, play that instead. The important part is timing and consistency. The click must mark the correct moment and every click must be followed by a reward. How Does Clicker Training Help? In positive reinforcement training, a dog is rewarded after performing a desirable behavior. Without the use of a clicker or other marker, it might be obvious to the trainer what is being rewarded, but is it obvious to the dog? For example, when teaching a dog to lie down, how do you make it clear you are rewarding the belly on the ground? You have to make sure the reward is given while the dog is lying down rather than the dog getting up to get it. Otherwise, the dog might think the reward is for standing up or walking toward you. That's easy with food treats, but impossible if the reward is a round of fetch or tug. What about dogs who pop up from a down as soon they touch the floor? You can't possibly get the reward to them fast enough. Or, what about more challenging behaviors like those performed at a distance? How do you get your dog a reward for jumping through a hoop at the exact moment they pass through the hoop? That's where the power of the click or other marker comes in. The click marks the moment you are going to reward, then bridges the gap in time until the reward arrives. Your dog knows exactly what action was correct. But couldn't you just use praise in the same way? You could, but it's not nearly as clear. You communicate with your dog using praise all the time. In fact, it's a wonderful part of rewarding your dog. Plus, there is nothing about praise that is specific to the training situation, nor would you want that to be the case. Gushing over your dog is part of the joy of dog ownership. Using a clicker or other training-specific marker prevents confusion about the reward to come. On top of the benefit of clarity, clicker-trained dogs tend to love learning. They want to train and work hard to earn a click. From your dog's point of view, mark and reward training makes teaching new behaviors a game. It takes the pressure off the trainer too. Looking for clickable moments means you focus on your dog's good choices, rather than dwelling on mistakes. Like any form of positive reinforcement training, clicker training boosts your communication, builds your bond with your dog, and makes training fun. How Do You Use Clicker Training? To use a clicker or other marker, you'll first need to teach the dog what the marker means. Sometimes called “loading the clicker,” you pair your chosen marker with a reward. So, click, then immediately treat. After about 10–20 repetitions, your dog will understand that the marker predicts a coming reward. Now you're ready to put the clicker into practice. You can use your marker with lure-and-reward training, where you use a reward to lure your dog into the behavior you're looking for. But it's also useful for shaping behaviors. Shaping involves building a complex behavior through baby steps. The clicker is also a great way to capture good behavior. So if you see your dog lying quietly on a mat instead of begging at the table, click then reward that behavior. Or if your dog has all four paws on the floor when the doorbell rings, click that moment before your dog has a chance to jump on guests. Last but not least, clicker training is a great way to teach tricks. Eventually, when your dog has learned a new behavior, you won't need the marker anymore. After all, it's simply a teaching tool. But whenever you want to lure, shape, or capture a behavior, the clicker or other marker will help you communicate clearly with your dog so the behavior you want is the behavior you'll get. If you've heard of clicker training but you're not quite sure what it is, this episode is for you. “Clicker training” has become shorthand for positive reinforcement training, and marine mammal behaviorist Karen Pryor is credited with bringing this incredibly effective technique to the dog training world. Here, we talk about Pryor's classic book “Don't Shoot The Dog,” and cover why, how and when to use a clicker.
