Veteran performance artist and Artistic Director of SPILL Festival, Robin Deacon makes self-disclosing work that deflects easy assumptions about who he is and what makes him tick. This discussion nevertheless locates two consistencies within his life/work: he has a penchant for avoiding rehearsal and a tendency to exemplify his perspective by talking about musicians and music rather than visual artists and art. In this roving conversation, Robin addresses the appeal of varied approaches to autobiographical practice, from the ironically humorous to the earnestly authentic; his feelings about success and mid-career status; the label, 'submerging artist'; and many wise anecdotes from his long and storied teaching career.Robin Deacon (born 1973 Eastbourne, England) is an artist, writer, filmmaker and curator based in Ipswich. His work, which has toured venues in the UK, US, Europe and Asia, is acclaimed for its innovative approach to the lecture as an art form. In his current role as Artistic Director of SPILL Festival, he emphasises unusual perspectives and untold histories. Oriana Fox is a London-based, New York-born artist with a PhD in self-disclosure. She puts her expertise to work as the host of the talk show performance piece The O Show.Credits:Produced, edited and hosted by Oriana FoxOriginal theme song written and performed by Paulette HumanbeingBackground music loop by Teddybeast6Photo of Robin Deacon by David LoneySpecial Thanks to Lara Perry, Sven Van Damme, Katie Beeson and Janak PatelSend us a textVisit www.theoshow.live for regular updates or follow us on Instagram.
‘Progress is a slow thing, but it is happening,' Marcel en Ireen kennen elkaar van jarenlange huizenruil en werden vrienden. Amsterdam voelt als een tweede huis voor haar vanwege de vrije manier van denken, de diversiteit en natuurlijk vanwege de coffeeshops en het bruisende uitgaansleven.Interview: Marcel Musters en Menke Visser. She was born and raised in St. Petersburg in a Jewish family, studied classical piano, but felt that performing classical music did not provide enough of an outlet for her to express herself fully. She wanted to dance, to communicate, to connect and collaborate with other people. She wanted to explore! So she left Russia in her early twenties to start a new life in New York, without speaking a word of English. But she immediately loved the energy of the city and discovered many other sides of herself within the world of ballet, theatre and fitness. In all the political conflicts going on in the world right now, she always chooses the side of humanity. Ireen believes that the America of Trump will in the end collapse, as long as we keep on fighting it. ‘Progress is a slow thing, but it is happening.' Marcel and Ireen swapped houses several times and became friends. Amsterdam feels like a second home for so many reasons! The free thinking, rational approach to solving problems, creative solutions, diversity and ofcourse the coffeeshops and the party spirit.
In this episode, Guy engaged in a profoundly moving and inspirational conversation with Suraj Holzwarth, a medicine woman and shamanic healer. The discussion explored the intersection of deep personal trauma and spiritual enlightenment, where Suraj shared her journey through unimaginable loss, the insights gained from shamanic practices, and her flash of enlightenment through plant medicine. Emphasizing the importance of spiritual connection, intuition, and accepting oneself as the embodiment of light, the episode invites listeners to contemplate their own purpose and path amidst life's tribulations. This powerful dialogue also delved into the current state of global consciousness and the collective initiation humanity is undergoing, urging a return to inner truths and the spiritual essence of being. Suraj's vulnerability, wisdom, and mission to guide others towards inner awakening through her work and upcoming programs make this episode a must-listen. About Suraj: White Eagle Medicine Woman (Suraj Holzwarth) adventurous life began early, when at the age of 19 she moved to Alaska and became the youngest woman to climb Denali, North America's highest peak. With a deep love for the earth, she spent most of her early years in the wilds, climbing the highest peaks and guiding wilderness expeditions and retreats throughout the world for over twenty five years. In the late 90's she received a vision in dreams with indigenous Grandmothers to create the world's largest healing drum and to travel promoting peace through music. Beginning in 2000 and taking over a year to construct, White Eagle and the multicultural Alaskan community built the seven-foot, crystal inlaid GrandMother Drum. In 2001, White Eagle and Grandmother Drum were launched on their first of many World Peace Tours inspiring unity, peace and “drumming up” awareness of earth sustainable projects with the theme “ The Heartbeat of One Family, One Earth. White Eagle is the founding director and Drum Keeper of the GrandMother Drum International Peace Project and the 501c3 non-profit Whirling Rainbow Foundation based in Homer, Alaska. She is internationally known as a shamanic healer, seer, trance-medium, author, speaker, teacher, ceremonial and performance artist of Native American and European ancestry. She has since traveled over a million miles touching a million people in 20 countries with the 7 ft, crystal inlaid, thundering heartbeat of the world's largest drum of its kind, Grandmother Drum, and promoting unity, peace, tribal reconciliation, and earth sustainability. Her award winning CDs include “Journey of the Heart”, “Songlines of the Soul”, “Living Waters of Grace” and “Holy Ground”. She is the author of “The Magic Bundle” children's book, and “Songs of A New Earth” songbook. White Eagle is also the director and co-producer of the award winning documentary film “GrandMother Drum: Awakening the Global Heart”, selected as the Top 20 Spiritual Films at the Tel Aviv Spirit Film Festival. She is the founder and director of the Rainbow Fire Mystery School (RFMS) operating in Alaska, Hawaii and Peru and has led thousands of shamanic workshops, ceremonies and training globally for over 35 years. Starting with the acclaimed “Language of One” and “Heart of One” online spiritual programs, White Eagle has now expanded the RFMS to over a dozen certified online shamanic training programs. She is also the creator, director and lead instructor of the certified shamanic methods of Balancing the Shields© Community Mother DrumKeepers Training© and The Crystal Skull Method©.In 2013, White Eagle launched the Global Blue Flame Planetary Grid ceremony, activating and renewing the earth's grid in a one day ceremony annually with 62 trained groups worldwide. Sarah is thinking of going on the dating apps, and we are psyched! But we hope she doesn't end up married to a hologram like some "performance artist" that we hate. We talk about a reality show from the aughts that had people competing for a donated kidney from a terminally ill woman that turned out to be a hoax and was meant to raise awareness about organ donation. We learn about a man who loved a bakery only to find out later that the owner was his biological mom. We discuss a New York Times article that explains the "grief" some people are feeling when their children choose not to have children, which means they won't be grandparents.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:For 10% off your order, head to https://www.jackblack.com/braincandy and use code BRAINCANDYCancel your unwanted subscriptions by going to https://rocketmoney.com/braincandyGo to https://www.greenchef.com/braincandy50 and use code braincandy50 for 50% off your first box plus 20% off your next two months! Joe Coleman, the legendary artist whose work digs into the darkest corners of the human psyche, joins us in the Crypt to discuss everything from painting serial killers like Carl Panzram, Albert Fish, and Ed Gein, to sharing the secrets of his controversial art. Join us as we delve into the contradictory beauty of the grotesque and the divine. Joe takes us inside his Odditorium, a personal collection as eerie as his paintings, where he houses macabre artifacts like a painting by John Wayne Gacy, the actual letter Albert Fish sent to Grace Budd's mother, a lock of Charles Manson's hair, and a Christmas card from Ed Gein. These relics serve as a tangible connection, DNA, to the energy that Joe channels into his art. We explore the paradoxes of life and death that permeate Joe's art, discuss his fascination with the redacted stories of the Bible, the corruption of the soul and flesh, and dive into his experiences selling art to icons like HR Giger, Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Iggy Pop. –

Welcome to Season 6, Episode 3 of Art Is… a podcast for artists. In today's episode, we're joined by Asia Stewart, a groundbreaking performance artist based in Brooklyn, NY, and the founding artistic director of Perform Vu.Join us as we explore Asia's creative origins and discover how her academic background at Harvard and Cambridge, studying government and sociology, along with her experience in theater, musical theater, and opera, uniquely informs her practice of performance art. Her work seeks to physicalize abstract concepts related to race, gender, and sexuality. Asia creates evening-length performances and duration works lasting hours or days, exploring the afterlife of colonial and patriarchal violence. In an open dialogue, Asia, Lauryn, and Isotta discuss the development of Asia's performance work and her early innovative use of digital participation from the audience. Asia opens up about the importance of authenticity and the mindset required in her art, as well as how she has coped with rejection throughout her evolving career. She emphasizes celebrating small wins and advocating for one's work.Asia introduces us to Perform Vu, “the netflix for performance art” and discusses how the platform addresses the often overlooked challenges performance artists face in sharing their work online, including issues of discoverability and compensation.Perform Vu is revolutionizing the future of art by connecting audiences to meaningful videos and films that highlight global cultural dynamics. It provides a sustainable financial solution for performance artists, addressing a significant gap in the market. Current media platforms like YouTube, Vimeo, and traditional streaming services such as Amazon Prime and Netflix fall short in offering the culturally relevant and impactful content that 66% of Gen Z and Millennials are actively seeking.Perform Vu fills this void by showcasing a diverse range of performances and artistic expressions that resonate with a culturally conscious audience. (We encourage you to explore Perform Vu. For just $4.99 a month, you can access the full collection of videos and films, including the powerful work of Asia Stewart!)As the conversation draws to a close, Asia asks Lauryn and Isotta how performance enters their lives. They discuss how performance plays into daily life as a person, as an artist, or even as an employee. Isotta shares some thoughts on how she sees marble sculpting as a performance, and Lauryn describes how performance enters her work leading workshops in rehabs and youth homeless shelters, as well as her journey being seen as a business, artist, advocate, and poet.Asia's innovative approach to performance art and her vision for a more supportive environment for artists provide invaluable insights and inspiration. Her passion is truly energizing, making this episode essential listening for any artist looking to refine their practice and engage with performance.Check out Asia Stewart's work and follow her at @asiastewart Check out Perform Vu https://www.performvu.com/ Watch this episode on Youtube or on SpotifyLearn more about Isotta at @isottapage and see her work Sign up for Isotta's Sculpture NewsletterLearn more about Lauryn @curatedsplash and her coaching work Curated Splash Resources Learn more and read podcast transcriptsFollow the podcast at @artispodcastOriginal music by Black Wonder TwinsFollow them @blackwondertwinsSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/art-is/donations

Passion of Suzanne. Easter message 2024Suzanne Muldowney (not Underdog Lady) has a very important message for all.
Watch any of his performances or study his visual art, the easy takeaway on Edwin Salas is he's one disturbed artist. And how could he not be?When I profiled him in 2019 for Asheville's public radio station, he told me about the rape he suffered 30 years earlier and about the murder of his mother when he was just 5 years old. Indeed, much of his creativity blooms from what he labels his “dark happy place” and is directly shaped by those traumas. The Asheville Fringe Festival is just around the corner, and Edwin Salas is about as Fringe as it gets in Asheville. He's presenting his twisted version of “Hansel & Gretel” in two performances of puppetry, with dolls he carved himself. We'll talk about why he never shields his audiences from death, even in his works for children. We'll get into his recent artistic explorations through virtual reality programming and Edwin's insistence that, despite his art, he's far from a scary person.SPONSOR: Greenland Pro Cleaning is a locally owned, eco-friendly, allergy-friendly cleaning company for homes, AirBnBs and offices. Marina Abramović is an artist renowned for performances and feats of endurance, in which her body is pushed to its limits. She has moved, scandalised and delighted audiences for half a century, and is now celebrated by world-leading galleries and institutions. Marina was born in Belgrade in 1946. Her parents were honoured as war heroes for their work for the Partisan resistance movement, and both took up senior roles in the post-war Yugoslav government. Marina became interested in painting during her childhood, and went on to study art. She first made her name as a performance artist in her 20s, creating events which often shocked viewers – and were equally traumatic for her. In 1974 she placed 72 objects, including sharp tools, a whip and a loaded pistol, on a table and invited gallery goers to use them on her, however they wished. She was attacked and left scarred, and part of her hair went white. For many years she led a nomadic existence, creating works with her partner, the German artist Ulay. In 1997, in response to the war in Bosnia, she created a prize-winning work for the Venice Biennale, in which for four days she attempted to scrub the blood from a vast pile of cow bones. In 2010 her exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York attracted almost a million people, many queuing for hours for a chance to sit opposite her in silence as part of her marathon performance The Artist is Present. More recently her work has been celebrated in a major retrospective exhibition at the Royal Academy in London, along with performances at English National Opera, marking the centenary of Maria Callas. DISC ONE: Aria from The Goldberg Variations. Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach German composer and musician, performed by Igor Levit DISC TWO: Norma, Act 1: "Casta diva". AUNTIE: Wa'tkwanonhweráton. Greetings, love, and respect from me to all of you. On this edition of The Aunties Dandelion we're visiting with Dr. Kahente Horn-Miller, a formidable Bear Clan educator from our Kanyenkehà:ka territory of Kahnawake. Kahente's name means she walks ahead - and she's the first Indigenous woman to receive a 3M National Teaching Fellowship – Canada's most prestigious recognition in educational leadership and teaching at the post-secondary level. It's actually Kahente's criticism of existing education systems that led to her win the 2023 3M prize. In order to fully engage her students at Carleton University, she's introduced Rotinonhsyón:ni teachings like consensus-based decision making and live performance of our traditional stories into her classrooms. KAHENTE: Beyond the skill of writing, beyond the skill of citing properly doing research, I think that one of the main skills our students need to learn coming out of institutions is how to talk to each other. Indigenous and non-Indigenous. You know why? Because of climate change. We are facing an uncertain future, right? And Indigenous folks and Indigenous communities – we have a lot of the answers. AUNTIE: Kahente's entire family makes it their business to walk ahead. Her mom, model and activist Kahentinetha Horn and her sisters were deeply involved in the 1990 Kanasatáke Resistance – also known as the Oka Crisis - and her sisters are Olympian Waneek Horn-Miller, actress Kahnietiio Horn, and Dr. Ojistoh Horn, a medical practitioner in Akwesasne. This familial, matriarchal power - along with the family's grounding in language and longhouse led Kahente to focus on her own community in her scholarship - which most academics shy away from. KAHENTE: Everything I did I wrote about my own people. So this was something that I learned how to do on my own in order to get through that system. AUNTIE: I'm Kahstoserakwathe and we are Yéthi Nihsténha ne Tekarónyakénare. The Aunties Dandelion. We're focused on revitalizing our communities through stories of land, language, and relationships. And we want to say Nyá:wenkò:wa – or big thanks – to Canada's Indigenous Screen Office – teyonhkiwihstekénha – for making this podcast possible through their New Media fund. It helps us a LOT if you share this episode with your friends, follow us on your favorite podcast channel and give us a review. As always, we're happy you are here to listen to your Aunties.
Marina Abramovic is an artist who for more than fifty years has pushed her mind and body to their limits - whether walking into a fire and almost dying from smoke inhalation, being stripped and attacked while passively allowing the public to manipulate her with tools and weapons, or sitting without interruption in MOMA for more than 700 hours facing the public. She's currently in London playing Maria Callas on stage at the English National Opera; and she's got a major retrospective of her work at the Royal Academy. We brought her together for a live ons stage interview with the director of the design museum, Tim Marlow, to talk about Nomadic Journey And Spirit of Places - her new book collecting notes, sketches, poetry, and doodles made while travelling. Jill Smith in conversation with David Eastauggh https://www.jill-smith.co.uk/ Born in London, Jill trained as an actress at RADA, and was later known as Jill Bruce. In the 1970s and early 1980s, she was a Performance Artist in partnership with the late Bruce Lacey. For five years they received funding from the then Arts Council of Great Britain. Evolving through science fantasy and alchemy, the performances were spectacular, largely outdoor, ceremonial, ritual celebrations of the turning cycles of earth and cosmos. Jill evolved her wonderful costumes as a form of living sculpture, wearing them to evoke the spirits and energies of the elements and forces she was honouring. The performances were at venues all over Britain: at fairs, festivals, art centres, colleges, art galleries; and alone at ancient sites – the documentation of these being later exhibited with installation and Performance at major exhibitions, including two at the Acme Gallery and one at the Serpentine.
