Milliner. Topics ranges from one of Charles William's most praised works, The Descent of the Dove, to Dr. Milliner's recent book The Everlasting People: G.K. Chesterton and the First Nations, and the dangers of experimenting and re-inventing Christianity as a spiritual explorer.

In this conversation, Dr. Sandra Glahn, Dr. Matthew Milliner, and Christine Calareso Bleecker discuss the absence of depicting the body of the first person of the Trinity in Christian art and how it has shaped perceptions of women. Dr. Milliner explains that early Christian art depicted the Trinity through sarcophagi and male embodiments of Christ, but the depiction of the Father went underground due to the influence of pagan depictions of Zeus. The resurgence of depicting the Trinity in art in later centuries led to the physical depiction of God and the caricature of the bearded male figure. This had ramifications for women, as it emphasized one gender's resemblance to God and undermined the understanding that both men and women fully image God. The conversation also explores the visual literacy needed to identify Virgin stories in art, such as the depictions of Agnes, Dorothy, Catherine, and Agatha. The significance of depicting the Virgin Mary is discussed, highlighting her representation of the ecclesial nature of the formation of the body of Christ and the reflection on end-of-life issues. The conversation also emphasizes the beauty and redemptive power of these art depictions. It also explores the power of images in healing and restoration, the importance of lament and hope, and the role of Mary as a symbol of healing and response to violence. Plus, the conversation also touches on the Virgin of the Passion and Our Lady of Perpetual Help as icons of love in the face of violence while addressing the power of images in overcoming pornography and the historical tradition of Mary as a leader in the church.Key Takeaways: The absence of depicting the body of the first person of the Trinity in Christian art has shaped perceptions of women. The resurgence of depicting the Trinity in art led to the physical depiction of God and the caricature of the bearded male figure.Depicting the Father physically undermined the understanding that both men and women fully image God.Visual literacy is important for identifying Virgin stories in art and understanding their significance. Today on the show I speak to the wonderful Christie about her own freebirth as well as the launch of her children's book about undisturbed birth - ‘Birth is magic'. Christie tells us how she was physiotherapist in a hospital for many years and consequently ended up with a whole heap of indoctrination through the medical system. For her first she ended up with a traumatic vaginal birth in hospital, that was neglectful, full of medical coercion, screws in her babies head and a vacuum delivery. Knowing better the second time - Christie chose a wild pregnancy and had a powerful freebirth with an amazing, blissful postpartum. We end by talking about how her amazing Freebirth inspired her to write a book. She says she just wanted to scream it from the rooftops of how great it was and so she channelled that energy into her book. I'm really grateful to Christie for creating a children's book about freebirth, as it is so important what media we consume - especially our children. Through stories we create culture and ultimately our reality - so make sure you tell your kids a healthy story about birth. Below are details of how you can purchase her book and also a discount code for you. Introducing author Darry Fraser Darry Fraser - historical fiction that restores women's place in history Jenny Wheeler: Hello there Darry and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Darry Fraser: Oh, thank you, Jenny. Thanks so much for having me. Jenny Wheeler: Darry, you're a best-selling author, some of your books have reached the Top 100 lists in Australia. And you write “empowering feminist adventures.” That's the way you like to describe them. They're all historicals as well. So tell us, what do you like about writing feminist adventure stories? Darry Fraser: The first thing I hear quite a lot, especially when I'm doing library talks or bookstore events or something is, ‘Gee, all your leading ladies are well ahead of their time.' and so on and so forth. And I had to have a think about and about that and address that women back in the day were just like you and I are in our 21st century, except they had greater restrictions on what they were allowed to do by law or within the family or whatever. But I don't believe that too many women were just wimps. I think they had as strong a personality as people you might meet today. But what fascinated me was how they maintained their own strength and their feminist, - and we're not talking feminazis here, we're talking feminists - being your own true self, within the restrictions that they came across. And... I think when you step back in time, which is basically what I do, and I love doing that, you find these people dotted throughout history, because we don't often have a great glimpse of the ordinary person's day-to-day life. Finding fascinating historical stories That glimpse of strength comes through, and we're finding more and more stories about let's say Australian and New Zealand women who did their own thing within the...

Tell me where you spend your Sunday mornings, and then where your grandmother spent her Sunday mornings, and I’ll venture a guess at what you think Christian art looks like. In the realm of Christian art that involves basilicas and mosaics the icon holds a special place: by some accounts mainly a window through which one looks upon divine reality, the artistry of the icon nonetheless promises a different view of the world we inhabit, and the Virgin of the Passion, if Matthew Milliner is right, seeks nothing less than to set the world’s eyes back on the Christ who saves by suffering and whose passion does not begin on a cross but in his very infancy. His book Mother of the Lamb: The Story of a Global Icon, from Fortress Press, tells the story of that icon, beginning as it does with an artist who departs an imperial city and continuing in our day as his work journeys everywhere people call out to the heavens. Christian Humanist Profiles is glad to welcome Matthew to the show.

The Genealogies of Modernity project is organizing a reading group around Thomas Pfau's new book, Incomprehensible Certainty: Metaphysics and Hermeneutics of the Image. By way of advertisement, we are re-running this episode with art historian and theorist Matthew Milliner, where he talks about the book and the wider context of image theory. Milliner also recently published a review of Incomprehensible Certainty in “The Hedgehog Review.” His new book on Our Lady of Perpetual Help, discussed in the episode, is now available. If this episode and that review entice you, join the reading group! It will begin meeting Thursday, February 23, 7-8:30 pm, in person in Pittsburgh as well as on Zoom, and it will run through much of the summer. If you are interested, send an email to admin@beatriceinstitute.org and we'll put you in touch with the group organizers and get you on the mailing list. For now, please enjoy Matthew and Ryan's discussion on how the past can erupt into the present; why cultivating these temporal possibilities must be an ecumenical project; the way images reveal timeless truths that underlie our visible surroundings; and how the ideas of thinkers like Chesterton can converse with, and be informed by, ancient Indigenous mythology.

Merry Christmas to you and yours! Our guest to close out the season of Advent is friend of the podcast, Matthew Milliner, Professor of Art History at Wheaton College. His new book is Mother of the Lamb: The Story of a Global Icon. Mother of the Lamb tells the remarkable story of a Byzantine image that emerged from the losing side of the Crusades. Called the Virgin of the Passion in the East and Our Lady of Perpetual Help in the West, the icon has expanded beyond its Byzantine origins to become one of the most pervasive images of our time. It boasts multiple major shrines on nearly every continent and is reflected in every epoch of art history since its origin, even making an appearance at the Olympics in 2012. Matthew Milliner first chronicles the story of the icon's creation and emergence in the immediate aftermath of the Third Crusade, whereupon the icon became a surprising emblem of defeat, its own fame expanding in inverse proportion to Christendom's political contraction. Originally born as a Christian response to the Christian violence of the Crusades, it marked the moment when Mary's ministry of suffering love truly began. Having traced the icon's origin and ubiquity, Milliner teases out the painting's theological depth, and continues the story of the icon's evolution and significance from its origins to the present day. As the story of the icon moves well beyond Byzantine art history, both temporally and thematically, it engages religion, politics, contemporary art, and feminist concerns at once. Always, though, the icon exemplifies dignity in suffering, a lesson that--through this image--Byzantium bequeathed to the wider world. Encapsulating eleven centuries of development of the mourning Mary in Byzantium, the Virgin of the Passion emerges as a commendable icon of humility, a perennial watchword signaling the perils of imagined political glory. The Virgin of the Passion, emblemizing political humility, the powerful agency of women, and the value of inter-Christian and extra-Christian concord, is an exemplary Marian image for the fledgling twenty-first century.
Art historian Matthew Milliner (Wheaton College) reflects on one of the most powerful and moving Christian icons: “The Virgin of the Passion,” AKA, “Our Lady of Perpetual Help,” which he develops in his book, Mother of the Lamb: The Story of a Global Icon. First painted as a response to failed Christian Empire and the violence of the Crusades, then mass produced and proliferated as a norm of Christian aesthetic worship, the icon offers a unique filter for contemporary understanding of faith and power; the Christian temptation to nationalism, empire, and violence; the meaning and visual expression of suffering love; and the beauty of engaged, solidarity and prophetic witness. Deborah Kase Lillian always loved hats. She played dress up with her mother and grandmorthers' hats as a child. And she always loved rummaging through thrift stores to find unique hats. But it was the combination of an earlier move to Paris and her 60th birthday that convinced her to go back to school to learn the amazing craft of hat making (or millinery) late in life. In 2020 in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, she launched her own hat-making company called "Harris Pat" (which comes from a spoonerism in a Cole Porter song with the line "If a Harris Pat means a Paris Hat, okay.") As Deborah shared in this episode: "Elizabeth Zimmermann is a noted knitter and knitting teacher. And I will never forget that she said once, 'People will put something on their head for, it seems to me, two reasons. Either it keeps them warm or it makes them feel cute.' And I like my hats to make people feel attractive and pretty and cute and seductive and alluring." Click here to learn more about her work and hats. Dr Andie Siggers is a GP and Functional Medicine Practitioner. Carol Milliner is a Health and Lifestyle Coach. They make up half of Change The Change. They each have two children and an impressive passion for fitness having run ultra marathons together. It was this friendship and Perimenopause discussions through running that brought the team together to change the way Menopause was managed. With experts in Nutrition, Fitness, Lifestyle and Medicine, they look at the whole picture of how a woman can restore her whole being mentally and physically and give her ‘health for life'. Neither of them had the ‘traditional' hot flashes: Andie was poleaxed by uncharacteristic and debilitating exhaustion and Carol found many symptoms creeping into her life. Andie gives us an insight as to why the UK GP system operates as it does with regards to Menopause and tells us how to talk to your GP successfully.
