The iconic folk duo met at an audition for the only country music band at a prestigious jazz school in Boston. They immediately clicked, and joined the rich lineage of Americana artists that stretches back centuries. In their 20s, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings discovered they had something special when they sang together, a sort of eerie emotional resonance that is usually confined to the blood harmonies produced when siblings sing together.Ever since they've been making music together which draws on the bluegrass, country and folk traditions they love.In their historic recording studio in Nashville, Tennessee (which has withstood three tornadoes in the last century), they craft haunting songs about the ugly and beautiful parts of humanity. For Gill and Dave, the DNA of folk music is something we can all contribute to, and which contributes to all of us.Gillian Welch and David Rawlings are currently touring Australia's eastern states. Today I'm chatting with acclaimed producer and music artist DJ Bill Bennett, who's set to drop his fantastic new album, "DILF Part 1," on February 14. Bill began his music career in the 1990s as a much-in-demand DJ in Detroit. Then Warner Brothers came calling - and Bill handled DJ duties for part of Madonna's Drowned World Tour, which spun into official remixes for “Frozen” and “Erotica.” It was only onward and upwards for Bill since then. With "DILF Part 1," Bill delivers deeply human lyrics about his own experiences in love and loss; rich tribal rhythms, soaring vocals, a very relatable perspective as a gay man who's lived some life, and, of course, top-shelf production. We also chat about his eye-catching, next-level music videos that have attracted a whole new legion of fans. The story of Hawaii's hip hop isn't a straight line—it's a flow that bends through island reggae, battle rap, day parties, and studio nights that run past last call. We sit down with Rappa Nui to trace that path from Puna to Oahu, where a poetry-loving kid grew into a meticulous writer who prefers the booth to the spotlight but still knows how to light a room when it counts. We dig into process first: how stacked notes turn into finished verses once the right beat shakes the walls, why he sometimes shifts from pure rap to island reggae textures, and what it takes to “shop” for a studio sound that feels like home. Along the way we give flowers to local pillars—Fiji, Angry Locals, Osna—and unpack how battle rap made sharper writers and braver performers in Hawaii long before algorithms could push a clip. There's a standout chapter on collaboration too: the Kanaka Fire link-up that became a radio moment and proof that one hook can move from Hawaii to global feeds in a day. It's not all highlight reels. Rappa Nui is candid about industry and the discipline it takes to keep the art clean: family over everything, clarity over chaos, and humility as a strategy, not a slogan. We trade top-five island vocalists and essential tracks, talk nightlife then vs now, and kick around a “verses” concept for island reggae that would pack any venue. He shares goals—bigger collabs, stronger reach, and songs that carry Hawaii's voice without dressing it up for export—and drops practical advice for up-and-comers: shake every hand, learn from doers, and keep going when platforms reset.Cue up this conversation if you love craft talk, local-to-global stories, and the sound of a scene leveling up without losing its roots. Stream, follow, and share with a friend who needs a spark. If it hits, leave a quick review and subscribe so you catch the next drop.

A left-handed guitar from a beloved grandpa. A band with grit and groove. A songwriter who lets chords decide the weather of a verse. That's the heart of our conversation with Corey Hooker, where Americana isn't a label so much as a living room: folk honesty, rock momentum, and stories that start one way and end somewhere braver. We trace Corey's path from Ohio stages to a decisive leap toward Colorado, a move designed to meet strangers and grow beyond a friends-and-family ceiling. He opens up about the craft behind his catalog—why a melody often leads the way, how a single “keyword” unlocks a chorus, and what happens when an angry draft flips into a sad truth, like in Perfect Family. We also get practical: Taylor versus Martin for stage and studio, the heirloom Austin that breaks writer's block, and how live shows sharpen arrangements faster than any DAW. If you care about songwriting, there's gold here: tight feedback loops with trusted critics, resisting the trap of perfectionism, and using crowd engagement to turn covers into gateways for original songs. The chemistry with the Cadillac Preachers powers much of this trajectory. Their partnership adds rock muscle to Corey's folk roots, landing in a space fans have called fugitive folk rock. That dynamic opened doors at Laurie's Roadhouse—first through a contest win, then with higher-profile slots—and now a direct support date for Mark Chesnutt. It's a blueprint for independent artists: build community, test songs in the wild, and record when the performance lives in muscle memory. Through it all, Corey's gratitude rings clear for the people who keep him grounded: a wife with blunt, loving notes, a mom who never misses a chance to show up, and bandmates who share the load.Hit play for an honest, energetic look at modern Americana, from writing rooms to big stages and the mountain roads in between. Her father Jack Roderick was the last mayor of the borough of Anchorage prior to the unification of the municipality in 1975. Libby recorded her first album in 1990 which included the song, “How could Anyone,” which has been featured on CNN, CBS, and the Associated Press. Her music has been featured at the U.N. Conference on Women, with Coretta Scott King and Walter Cronkite in Washington D.C., and played on Mars by NASA. Libby has also been the director of the University of Alaska Anchorage's Difficult Dialogues Initiative since 2006; through that initiative she has helped reinforce and protect civil discourse at centers of higher learning and beyond. According to former UAA Chancellor and governor of Alaska Sean Parnell: “Libby's work is a critical keystone in the university's service to students and to Alaska. The democracy-threatening polarization of the American public, social media's influence on our inability to find common ground, and the difficult but necessary discussions related to human dignity and educational access have combined to maker her leadership paramount to meeting the mission to the university.”

Pop can sparkle and still say something. That's the throughline as we sit down with recording artist Kayn Falcon, who blends Connecticut calm with New York urgency to craft synthwave-leaning pop that moves the body and nudges the mind. Kayn opens up about producing his songs from the beat up, guarding his creative sessions like sacred space, and trusting a small team of specialists to elevate his mixes and masters without diluting his vision. If you've ever wondered how minimal rooms and maximal ideas can coexist, this is a masterclass in focus. We dig into the art of writing upbeat tracks with hidden depth—why tempos over 100 BPM don't have to mean shallow, how “Automatic” disguises social commentary inside a danceable hook, and what it takes to balance immediacy with meaning. Kayn also shares how a long-lost freshman-year hard drive reshaped his path, proving that early instincts can carry surprising power years later. Along the way, he talks image and branding, why he embraces a bright falsetto that once drew criticism, and how owning what makes you different can become your defining edge.Looking ahead, Kayn sketches a bold live vision: dancers, story-driven staging, and projector visuals to keep the narrative front and center without breaking the budget. Offstage, he's navigating algorithms with playful “confessionals,” building real community one post at a time, and turning work ethic into momentum through multiple jobs and relentless craft. If you're curious about synthpop, DIY production, artist branding, and the grind behind meaningful music, you'll feel right at home here.Loved this conversation? Big lights, bigger grit. That's the pulse running through our conversation with country-rock artist Jonny James—a former college football player who built a million-stream career the hard way: booking his own shows, designing his own merch, and recording between a home base in Indiana and sessions in Nashville. Jonny takes us inside the moments that shaped his sound, from pop-punk roots and Eric Church's rule-bending to the raw ache of writing Shotgun in the Sky after losing his father-in-law. The result is a voice that straddles red dirt swagger and rock energy, and a live show that pivots from intimate acoustic to full-throttle electric depending on the room.We dig into process, not just polish. Jonny explains why melody usually comes first, how wordplay turns scenes into songs, and what 75 Hard has done for his voice and stage stamina—pre-show runs, no drinks until the last chord, and sharper, stronger sets. He shares the origin of his fan-favorite baseball jersey “cape,” the realities of opening for legends from Night Ranger to the Oak Ridge Boys, and the art of reading a crowd without losing yourself. Family is the throughline: coaching early baseball after a midnight gig, carving creative time around mill shifts, and teaching his kids that work beats talent when talent doesn't work. Then there's the whiskey. Born from a smoked old fashioned and refined through relentless tastings, Jonny's 80-proof bottle carries applewood-cherry smoke and a subtle cinnamon edge—no syrupy shortcuts. We talk partnerships, scaling from local distilleries to full ownership, and the grind of distribution as an independent spirits brand. It's the same DIY ethos as the music: build the thing, earn the fans, keep going when the easy path says stop.Episode LinksJonny James: https://www.officialjonnyjames.com/Send us a text Support the showLinks Jay Franze: https://jayfranze.com/ The Jay Franze Show: https://thejayfranzeshow.com/ JFS Country Countdown: https://jayfranze.com/countdown/ Contact Reach Out: https://jayfranze.com/contact/ Mailbag: https://jayfranze.com/mailbag/ Question of the Day: https://jayfranze.com/question/ Sponsor the Show: https://jayfranze.com/sponsor/ Socials Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jayfranze TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jayfranze X: https://x.com/jayfranze YouTube: https://youtube.com/@jayfranze Services Consulting: https://jayfranze.com/services/ Books Stand Out or Fade Out: https://jayfranze.com/books/

A trunk ride with Billy Gibbons, a pair of “blessed” boots, and the moment a lyric became a band name—this one has stories. We sit down with American Mile's Eugene Rice for a fast, funny, and unfiltered tour through the making of a modern Southern rock band built on grit, harmony, and a never-quit work ethic. From a Vermont town of 1,500 to SoCal stages, Eugene traces the path: sleeping in rehearsal spaces, selling a bike to buy an RV, and logging 200+ dates a year—often in four-hour marathons that would break most bands. He breaks down how “American Mile” emerged mid-take with producer Keith Nelson (Buckcherry), why a bison ended up on the merch table, and how thrift-store scarves became a signature stage move that also solved the hated-iPad problem. We get into sound and influence—Allman Brothers and Skynyrd bones with modern threads from The Black Crowes and Blackberry Smoke. Eugene spotlights the B3 and harmony vocals as secret sauce, plus the rotating “fifth member” who steps in for showcases. Then it gets practical: the economics of LA gigs, the reality of casino anchors, and why a vintage guitar day job keeps the dream alive and the tone honest. He opens the hood on the business too—band democracy, equal pay, and a vesting path to ownership that rewards the grind—while telling road-war stories about blown control arms, stolen catalytic converters, and welding fixes that saved shows.Underneath the laughs and lore sits a clear message: the American dream is still there if you work for it. Mentors matter. Systems matter. Saying yes matters. If you're building a band, a creative career, or any longshot, you'll leave with playbook-level tactics and renewed fight. What happens when a childhood nickname becomes a musical identity? Josh Gale and Sean from the band Gale Byrd join us to share how football fields in Texas, marsh sunsets in Charleston, and the everyday struggles of marriage have shaped their distinctive sound. The conversation dives deep into the creative heartbeat of this Charleston-based band. Josh reveals how his football nickname "Gale Bird" eventually became their band name, while Sean explains the meticulous production process that transforms their raw inspiration into polished tracks. Most touching is the story of how Josh's wife Melissa, silenced by childhood criticism, found her voice again through marriage and now stands as a vital part of their musical identity.Charleston's natural beauty plays a starring role in their creative process. The marshlands, harbor sunsets, and coastal atmosphere provide both inspiration and therapy for the band members. This connection to place infuses their music with an authentic spirit that fans immediately recognize. After a decade-long hiatus to focus on raising families, Gale Bird has returned with a renewed sense of purpose, crafting songs that speak directly to the heart of adult relationships.Their upcoming single "Roses" carries a powerful message: "Don't hold your roses till the funeral, take every chance to tell her she's beautiful."       Have you ever wondered what it's like to busk with a red ukulele at nine years old—and end up headlining festivals before even finishing high school? On this week's episode of Love University, we sat down with Aspen Jacobsen—an 18-year-old Americana-folk prodigy and award-winning recording artist. With her finger-style guitar, mandolin, and raw vocals, Aspen's debut LP Arsonist Daughter is turning heads with its fearless lyrics on relationships, mental health, and social justice. Here are a few highlights from our conversation: • Origins of a prodigy. Aspen shared what she sang for tips as a 9-year-old busker—and why music called her even without a family influence. She described herself as an “old soul” drawn to lyrics that spark reflection and change. • Why fire? We asked why her debut album carries the title Arsonist Daughter. For Aspen, fire symbolizes transformation—controlled destruction that clears the way for rebirth. She even pointed out the lyric that burns hottest for her personally. • Music as medicine. Anxiety often threads through Aspen's lyrics. She opened up about whether performing soothes or stirs it—and how songwriting itself gives her a tool for healing that therapy alone could not. • Staying grounded. From sold-out shows to industry recognition, Aspen stays centered by leaning on close friends, mindfulness practices, and remembering why she writes: to spark thought, ignite conversations, and inspire change. • Takeaway from Arsonist Daughter. Each track, Aspen says, is a spark meant to ignite reflection—on faith, climate grief, mental health, or identity. Her goal is for listeners not only to hear her music but to feel compelled toward empathy and action. Aspen left us with one lasting truth: songs aren't just melodies—they're matches. When you strike them, they can light up the dark corners of your heart. Catch the full interview now on Love University to hear Aspen's remarkable journey—from street corners to festival stages—and why she believes music can still change the world, one lyric at a time.

Christopher Wyze's remarkable journey from advertising executive to blues musician proves it's never too late to follow your passion.Growing up in Indiana, Christopher's introduction to blues came when his college-aged brother brought home BB King and Bobby Blue Bland records. Though the music resonated with him, life took him in a different direction – building a career in marketing, running an advertising agency, and writing books. Music remained a distant memory until a chance encounter at a church wine dinner twenty years ago led to an impromptu performance that changed everything. When invited to front a local band, Christopher embraced the opportunity despite having been away from music for decades. Feeling he needed to contribute more than just vocals, he taught himself harmonica and eventually found his way to Clarksdale, Mississippi – the heart of delta blues country. There, he met Ralph Carter, former musical director for Eddie Money, who became his producer and collaborator. Their partnership led to recording sessions at the legendary Muscle Shoals studios and a record deal with Big Radio Records, a company with direct ties to Sam Phillips, who discovered Elvis and Howlin' Wolf. What makes Christopher's story particularly fascinating is how his life experience shaped his music. Unlike genres where youth dominates, blues benefits from the authenticity that comes with age. As Christopher puts it, "This music doesn't happen without experience." His background as a writer and marketer gave him unique tools for songwriting and promoting his music. Perhaps most remarkably, his song "Three Hours from Memphis" – written while driving to meet his producer – unwittingly predicted his own journey before it fully unfolded.Ready to be inspired by a second-act success story? Listen as Christopher shares how embracing the blues led him to find joy, purpose, and unexpected friendships in the later chapters of his life.LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.comVirtually You: https://www.virtuallyyouva.com/Christopher Wyze: https://christopherwyzeandthetellers.com/ Support the show

Send us a textFew artists bring a perspective to country music as unique as Chris Erasmus. Growing up in a game reserve in Zimbabwe before relocating to South Africa, Erasmus developed an authentic connection to rural life that most country singers can only romanticize. On this captivating episode, he shares stories of herding buffalo on horseback, working as a genuine cowboy in Montana, and how these experiences naturally translated into a country music career based in London."I didn't set out to do country music," Erasmus reveals with a laugh. "I wrote music and everyone was like 'oh, this is country.'" This organic evolution speaks volumes about the authenticity underpinning his work. Drawing inspiration from storytellers like Johnny Cash and Bruce Springsteen, Erasmus brings a global perspective that challenges conventional genre boundaries while honoring country music's narrative traditions. What truly sets Erasmus apart is his multidisciplinary approach to performance. A former national-level decathlete who studied business at the University of Queensland, worked as a stuntman, and performs in musical theater, he applies the discipline from these varied pursuits directly to his music career. "If you stop practicing guitar, you're going to get worse. If you stop singing, you stop writing," he explains, drawing parallels between athletic training and musical development. "When you're not working is the time you've got to be working hardest to be ready."Currently working on a new album featuring collaboration with diverse musicians and producers, Erasmus offers fascinating insights into his creative process, alternating between starting songs with lyrics or exploring melodies on various instruments. From his resonator guitar to experimenting with cello instead of traditional fiddle, his willingness to push boundaries while respecting tradition creates a sound that's both familiar and refreshingly different.Listen now to discover how Chris Erasmus's extraordinary journey across continents has shaped a musical perspective that stands out in today's country music landscape. With a new single dropping this month and album on the way, this is the perfect time to familiarize yourself with this rising global talent.LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.comVirtually You: https://www.virtuallyyouva.com/Chris Erasmus: https://www.chriserasmus.com/ Support the show
