Send us a textThis week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am proud to welcome Josh Christina, Recording Artist, scene-stealing, piano-wielding frontman, and veteran headliner of several cruise lines. Listeners know I am as passionate about music and comedy as I am about cruising so when I get a chance to have a conversation with someone who has performed on cruise ships, I am in my glory. Josh Christina is a dynamic and passionate musician whose love for piano rock has taken him on an incredible journey. His musical story began at the age of 7, inspired by the iconic sounds of Elvis Presley in Disney's Lilo & Stitch. It wasn't until age 15, after seeing the Broadway show Million Dollar Quartet and discovering the electrifying Jerry Lee Lewis, that Josh began playing piano, igniting his path as a pianist and performer. Josh's talents caught the attention of Grammy-nominated producer Kent Wells, who has worked with legends like Dolly Parton and Reba McIntire. Kent describes Josh as “such an old soul,” praising the way “the music just pours out of him.” This connection led to Josh recording in Nashville, creating music that resonates with the soul of classic rock and boogie-woogie. His single “Kayla Ann” topped several independent radio charts, and Josh's album Instincts (recorded at the historic Sam Phillips Recording in Memphis, TN) was a testament to his mastery. Produced by Josh and Grammy-winning pianist Jon Carroll, Instincts received high praise, with Jon calling Josh a performer who “does it real well and means every note.” Josh's high-energy performances have taken him across the globe, including a UK tour where he graced the stage of Ireland's Late Late Show. He's headlined major cruise lines, bringing his piano rock show to fans of all ages worldwide. He's also shared the stage with some of the world's top boogie-woogie and rock ‘n' roll pianists, earning admiration from both peers and fans for keeping the genre alive. His latest album, UFO's Over Phoenix, recorded live at Stages Music and Arts in Maryland, has already captured attention for its unique sound. Daryl Davis, former bandleader and pianist for Chuck Berry, describes the album as striking “the perfect balance of a scent of the familiar while being creatively and refreshingly new.” Josh Christina's infectious energy, undeniable talent, and deep respect for rock and roll history have earned him a dedicated following. His music is a celebration of the past, present, and future of piano rock.Support the showSupport thejoyofcruisingpodcast https://www.buzzsprout.com/2113608/supporters/newSupport Me https://www.buymeacoffee.com/drpaulthContact Me https://www.thejoyofcruising.net/contact-me.htmlBook Cruises http://www.thejoyofvacation.com/US Orders (coupon code joyofcruisingpodcast)The Joy of Cruising https://bit.ly/TheJoyOfCruisingCruising Interrupted https://bit.ly/CruisingInterruptedThe Joy of Cruising Again https://bit.ly/TheJoyOfCruisingAgainIntl Orders via Amazon

Send us a textWhat happens when a Broadway performer steps away from the stage for a decade to raise children, then reemerges as a recording artist? In this candid conversation, Ann Kittredge reveals the unexpected twists in her artistic journey from theater to acclaimed vocalist. The heart of Kittredge's approach lies in her commitment to storytelling above all else. "I don't ever want it to be about my voice," she explains, detailing how she molds her vocal style to serve each song rather than imposing herself upon it. This chameleon-like flexibility allows her to move effortlessly between genres - from jazz and swing to country and folk - creating albums that defy easy categorization but maintain emotional authenticity.Kittredge shares a particularly moving story about her determination to record Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" as a love letter to music itself, despite her team's initial resistance. After bringing the song to planning meetings four separate times, she finally issued an ultimatum: "I have to do this song...if you really don't like it, you have my permission to not be involved." The song eventually became one of her most requested numbers, illustrating how creative conviction can overcome collaborative doubt.Perhaps most revealing is Kittredge's honesty about returning to performing after a decade-long hiatus to raise her children. "Confidence has been a big challenge," she admits, describing how she initially knew she "wasn't good" but recognized that improvement required persistence through discomfort. This vulnerability transformed into strength when her pandemic-inspired debut album - originally intended just for her children - unexpectedly garnered over a million streams on Spotify.Whether discussing caring for her mother with Alzheimer's, navigating her marriage of nearly forty years, or reimagining classic songs, Kittredge demonstrates that artistic growth often emerges from life's complexities rather than despite them. Her story offers powerful encouragement for anyone considering a creative reinvention at any age. Listen, be inspired, and then seek out the extraordinary work of independent artists like Kittredge who deserve your support.LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.comAnn Kittredge: https://www.annkittredge.com/ Support the show

Send us a textWhat happens when a 19-year-old vocalist joins forces with seasoned musicians spanning six decades of life experience? In this riveting conversation with Awaiting Abigail, we discover how musical chemistry transcends age barriers and conventional wisdom. The Dallas-Fort Worth hard rock band shares their remarkable origin story - from guitarist James finding vocalist Abby through a "musician dating app" to their first high-profile gig at Trees in Deep Ellum. Abby reveals how she turned instrumental tracks into fully-formed songs from her home studio, delivering one powerful composition weekly to increasingly impressed bandmates who initially worried about the 42-year age gap between their youngest and oldest members.Behind their powerful sound lies a fascinating recording process with producer Alex Gerst at Empire Sound. The band details their transition to modern gear like the Quad Cortex for silent-stage performances while maintaining authentic rock energy. Their rapid ascent includes upcoming performances with LA Guns at the legendary Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood, Lillian Axe's Texas tour, and a biker rally alongside Texas Hippie Coalition. Most compelling is how this self-described "island of misfit toys" functions as a cohesive unit despite their generational differences. As Abby puts it, their diversity "gives us different genres and time periods and mixes it together really well." What began as an uncertain collaboration has evolved into a musical family united by shared passion and mutual respect.Want to witness this unique rock phenomenon yourself? Send us a textWhat happens when Arizona's rugged landscapes and life's harshest challenges shape a country music artist's authentic voice? In this captivating conversation, Shari Rowe takes us behind the curtain of her musical journey, revealing how personal tragedy transformed into creative resilience.Shari opens up about recording at Nashville's renowned Ruckus Room studio with producer Jamie Tate, working alongside session legends like Tommy Harden, Jeff King, and Jimmy Mattingly. Her stories paint a vivid picture of Nashville's recording scene while offering fascinating insights into the collaborative magic that happens when talented musicians gather in a studio. The heart of our conversation explores how Shari's upbringing in a challenging Phoenix neighborhood and painful family experiences became the foundation for her songwriting approach. After losing both parents, she made the conscious choice to channel grief into creativity rather than pausing her career. This led to writing "The Woods," a deeply personal song about her father and the mountain escapes where her family found moments of redemption amidst difficult times. What makes Shari unique is her ability to straddle two worlds - maintaining her Arizona identity while navigating Nashville's commercial music industry. Together with her husband Kevin on bass, she's built a tight-knit "band family" that tours internationally, finding particularly enthusiastic reception for country music in Poland. Her recent production work with fiddle player Stephen Bowman reveals yet another dimension to her artistry.Whether you're fascinated by the inner workings of Nashville's music scene, inspired by stories of turning pain into art, or simply love authentic country music with depth, this episode delivers powerful insights about perseverance and finding your creative voice. In 2018, Austrian trumpeter Selina Ott made history by becoming the first woman to win first prize in the 70-year history of the prestigious ARD International Music Competition in Munich. That landmark achievement launched a remarkable career that has taken her to concert halls around the world, performing both as a soloist and with major orchestras. Her debut album, Trumpet Concertos, was honored with the Opus Klassik Award in 2021, and she has since released two more acclaimed solo recordings. Though still early in her musical journey, Selina has already established herself as one of the leading voices of her generation. In this conversation, I had the great pleasure of speaking with Selina about some of the defining moments in her life and career so far. In part one, we begin with her recent experience performing Wynton Marsalis's Trumpet Concerto with the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Marin Alsop. She shares what it was like to collaborate with Marsalis himself and how that experience left a lasting impact. We then reflect on her preparation for, and participation in, the ARD Munich competition—what it took to succeed, and how her life changed overnight following her win. From there, we rewind even further to talk about her early beginnings on the trumpet as a young girl, and the important influence of legendary trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger.[Subscriber Content] In part two, we shift our focus to the balance between orchestral and solo playing, and what it really means to be a well-rounded soloist in today's musical world. We also touch on Selina's relationship with social media and why she chooses to keep a relatively low profile online. One of the more unique aspects of her life outside of music is her passion for horses—she owns several—and we explore how that love for animals complements her musical life. Selina also gives us insight into how she chooses her concert repertoire, both for solo recitals and orchestral performances. And finally, I ask her what advice she would give to a 10-year-old girl dreaming of becoming a musician one day.DoricoProfessional music notation and composition software from Steinberg. Send us a textThe struggle between head and heart shapes every artist's journey, but for rock vocalist Gina Fritz, this internal battle birthed "Chemicals" – a powerful anthem about perseverance in today's complex music landscape. When faced with the exhaustion of simultaneously playing creative and businesswoman, Fritz chose to follow her passion despite the uncertainty.Fritz draws inspiration from female-fronted powerhouses like Halestorm and Flyleaf while crafting her distinctive brand of rock that occasionally throws in "a breakdown or two" to keep audiences guessing. Though Connecticut's scene leans hardcore, her sound carves its own path, resonating with fans seeking authentic, emotionally-charged rock music.Behind every great artist stands a trusted team. Producer Christopher Paquette understands Fritz's vision, avoiding the "Disney princess" sound some producers force on female vocalists. Her band members function as true partners rather than hired musicians, each contributing beyond performances – from sound engineering to fan engagement. This collaborative spirit extends to her merchandise design and social media strategy, where covering songs by bands she opens for has proven surprisingly effective at connecting with new audiences. The modern musician's battlefield includes more than just stages and studios. Fritz navigates the content demands of platforms like TikTok with strategic purpose, seeing past the exhaustion to appreciate genuine connections with fans. When someone approaches her after a show saying "I found you through TikTok and now I love your music," the digital grind suddenly feels worthwhile.Ready to experience rock music that balances raw power with vulnerability? Send us a textConnor Daly brings fresh perspective to Nashville's music scene as an Americana artist who made the leap from Virginia to Music City just eight months ago. Despite being relatively new to the area, he's already conquered some of Nashville's most revered songwriter venues, including the legendary Bluebird Cafe. The contrast between these iconic venues reveals much about Nashville's songwriting culture. As Connor explains, "The Bluebird felt very casual... like I was playing in a living room somewhere," noting how the venue's unassuming strip mall location belies its worldwide fame. Meanwhile, The Listening Room placed him under bright lights on an actual stage—both experiences offering different creative energies while sharing an audience that truly listens to the lyrics.Connor's debut album "Colors Fade" showcases his songwriting talents developed long before his Nashville move. Recorded across prestigious studios including Reba McEntire's Starstruck and the renowned Castle Studios, the album represents years of creative development. His songwriting process offers fascinating insight into how songs naturally evolve: "I like to start out with just playing chords... start humming a melody... try not to think too hard, try to leave my brain out of it and just start thinking of words and feelings that the melodies are bringing out."Nashville has introduced Connor to the collaborative art of co-writing after years of creating alone in Virginia. This adjustment highlights the relationship-like dynamics between songwriters who must find creative chemistry. His duet "Fake One Tear" with Mary Heather Hickman demonstrates how social media connections can lead to meaningful artistic collaborations in today's music industry.Ready to discover an authentic voice in Americana music? Guest and HostGuest: Precious Perez, President at RAMPD | On LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/precious-perez-a0548915b/ | Website: https://preciousperezmusica.com/Host: Sean Martin, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine and Host of Redefining CyberSecurity Podcast & Music Evolves Podcast | Website: https://www.seanmartin.com/Show NotesThe intersection of music, technology, and accessibility is shaping how artists create, perform, and share their work. In this episode of Music Evolves, host Sean Martin speaks with singer, songwriter, and educator Precious Perez, a Berklee College of Music graduate with degrees in music education and vocal performance. As a blind Latina artist and disability advocate, Perez shares her journey in music, the role of technology in her creative process, and how she works to increase opportunities for musicians with disabilities.A Life Shaped by MusicPerez's passion for music started early, surrounded by the diverse sounds of her Puerto Rican household. From salsa and reggaeton to R&B and pop, her exposure to various genres helped shape her identity as an artist. She recalls her first songwriting experience in fourth grade, when she transformed a poem into a song with the help of a music teacher. That moment solidified her desire to pursue music professionally, leading her to Berklee, where she refined her skills in both performance and education. As a blind musician, Perez explains how she interacts with music differently from sighted artists. She describes her early experiences learning Braille music and how tactile memory plays a role in understanding composition. While she primarily relies on her ear, her knowledge of Braille notation helps her analyze rhythm and structure in a unique way.Technology as a Tool for InclusionFor Perez, technology has been both a gateway and a challenge. She demonstrates how she uses a BrailleSense note taker, a device that allows her to type lyrics and read them in Braille while composing. She also shares how screen reading software enables her to navigate recording software like Logic Pro and Pro Tools, ensuring she can produce and edit her music independently.Beyond the studio, accessibility in live performance is another key consideration. Whether using in-ear monitors or giving cues to her bandmates through verbal or physical signals, Perez emphasizes that clear communication and collaboration make performances seamless.Advocating for Disability Representation in MusicPerez is also the president of RAMPD (Recording Artists and Music Professionals with Disabilities), an organization founded by recording artist Lachi and NPR Tiny Desk Contest winner Gaelynn Lea. RAMPD is dedicated to amplifying disability culture, promoting accessibility, and ensuring that disabled artists have equitable opportunities in the music industry. The organization consults with major industry events like the Grammys, NAMM, and Folk Alliance to improve accessibility and representation. She stresses that disability is an often-overlooked part of diversity and that anyone, at any time, could join this community due to illness, injury, or aging. Through RAMPD, Perez and her colleagues are breaking down barriers and proving that disabled musicians are just as competitive and professional as their peers.A New Era of MusicPerez is embracing a new era in her music, blending her Latin roots with her pop and R&B influences. She performs her latest song, Rosé, a Spanish-language track about embracing the present moment with a loved one despite life's difficulties. With plans to record a new project with We Could Be Music in Costa Rica, she is leaning into the Latin music space in a way she has always envisioned. Her story is one of resilience, innovation, and passion. From navigating music education as a blind student to advocating for industry-wide accessibility, Perez is proving that talent and determination—not sight—define an artist's success.Listen to the full episode to hear Precious Perez's insights on technology, performance, and advocacy in music.SponsorsAre you interested in sponsoring this show or placing an ad in the podcast?Sponsorship
