I'm joined by artist and author Yumi Sakugawa to dive deep into the healing energy of the Sun tarot card. We explore what it means to truly embody your inner light, how to reclaim authenticity beyond self-shrinking narratives, and how creative expression becomes a powerful act of spiritual truth. Yumi shares her journey of healing, speaking out, embracing "delusions of grandeur," and creating her Cosmic Comfort oracle deck
Yumi is a Japanese Okinawan American interdisciplinary artist and author. In our conversation, we ground various ideologies into our lived experiences and understanding. Yumi speaks from a deeply personal place of coming from both an occupied and occupying nation and sees the echoes of her history in what we are seeing throughout the world today. We talk about the toxicity of capitalism, the interconnectedness of all oppression, and the inherent radicalism of artists. It was such a comfort to hear Yumi's thoughts that there is no right or wrong way to be in the liberation practice. All of our unique roles are needed because we work together in community. Yumi reminds us that it is revolutionary to rest and to trust that the work will continue through the collective. Please enjoy — the radical artist that is Yumi. We had the most incredible conversation with Yumi Sakugawa (she/they) in this week's episode! Yumi is a second-generation Japanese-Okinawan-American interdisciplinary artist based in Los Angeles and the author of several published books including, I THINK I AM IN FRIEND-LOVE WITH YOU, YOUR ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO BECOMING ONE WITH THE UNIVERSE, THE LITTLE BOOK OF LIFE HACKS, and FASHION FORECASTS. Yumi's journey is filled with joy and connection, inspired by a fearless pursuit of creativity, play, magic and experimentation. In this very special conversation we explore the importance of getting back to play and even get to hear about Yumi's recent experience in clown school! Yumi invites us to examine what creativity can become when we let go of expectations and attachments to output, opening us up to new perspectives and ways of connecting to our own creativity through exploration. “When we broaden the definition of creativity and start off with the world view that everyone is creative, and creativity is simply disrupting old patterns to consciously co-create new ones, then it makes me think–well, just the whole act of being human from the day we are born to the day we die we are creative, because just our very existence is disrupting old patterns.” We left this conversation feeling so fulfilled and excited to cultivate new spaces to play in. Get inspired and connect with Yumi on IG @YumiSakugawa ! Yumi's multimedia installations have also been exhibited at the Japanese American National Museum, the Smithsonian Arts & Industries Building, and the Peabody Essex Museum. Welcome to your Boosted Meditation. As we reflect on the current state of the world, there's no denying this extraordinary time we're living in. Although the year is now 2021, no matter how much we'd like to leave 2020 in the dust, there's no un-learning, no un-seeing, no un-doing the bombshells that made up the infamous year. There's a wonderful quote from artist Yumi Sakugawa. It goes: “While the outside world rushes to move on, the experience of the pandemic has yet to fully leave my body. Parts of my body, my mind, my spirit are still trapped in the limbo of pandemic despair, pandemic depression, pandemic numbness, pandemic survival.” The world is ramping back up and maybe you're not so comfortable with the pace things are moving. Or perhaps you've been eager to get back out, and now it's finally happening, but something's off—and it could be you, or it could be them, or it could be everything.A lot of crazy shit went down in 2020, but this meditation isn't meant to be a recap. This meditation is built for the present, to truly dedicate just a few minutes—to help you take the world you've always known, and reconcile it, with life after 2020.As your city takes flight once again, for your own well-being, let's take the time to get your wings back. Let's light this candle!Thank you for listening! I speak with comic book artist and author Yumi Sakugawa. Yumi’s book, Your Illustrated Guide to Becoming One With The Universe is a gem and has made it onto a couple of my book recommendation lists. A good portion of our conversation is centered around one of the ideas in that book: having cake and tea with your demons. This is a metaphor for the spiritual and psychological principle that, instead of avoiding the dark or undesirable parts of yourself, you should face them. Or, as she says: "Invite your demons to sit down and have a slice of cake and a cup of tea." It’s an interesting and powerful idea that shows up in psychology, philosophy and religion. It’s also an idea that isn’t talked about nearly enough in the world of self-development. I’d like to change that.

Yumi Sakugawa explores the possibilities of a not-so-distant future where fashion can be intergenerational, Asian American, divine feminine, environmentally conscious, community building, ancestor worshipping, and possibly bring you closer to enlightenment. Turning Japanese (2D Cloud) In 1995, 22-year-old Mari has just exited a long-term relationship, moving from Mill Valley to San Jose, California. Soon enough she falls in love, then finds employment at an illegal hostess bar for Japanese expats, where she is determined to learn the Japanese language and culture. She hopes to finally connect with her Japanese relatives without her mother as a translator and filter. Turning Japanese is a story about otherness, culture clashes, generation gaps and youthful impetuosity. Praise for Turning Japanese “It is a tremendous blessing to read anything that comes from a skillful graphic memoirist like MariNaomi. In Turning Japanese, her unflinching honesty, open heart and hard-earned wisdom challenges us to embrace the unexpected detours that unfold in our own lives. The empty spaces in her minimalist artwork contain many wells of unspoken feelings that linger with you long after you finish reading her book.” -- Yumi Sakugawa, author of Your Illustrated Guide to Becoming One with the Universe Praise for MariNaomi’s Past Work “Refreshing and poignant...” -- Publishers Weekly “In Dragon’s Breath and Other True Stories, MariNaomi weaves a crazy-quilt of despair, hope, lost loves, new beginnings, horrible regrets, hilarious memories, and above all else, survival. Her beautiful, spare line is stripped of all but the most important details in order to impart the greatest emotional impact in a given story, creating a delicate storytelling rhythm built on restraint, subtlety and total vulnerability. Her short autobiographical anecdotes create a gestalt of a person who has lived and viewed life with a curious intellect and her heart on her sleeve.” -- Rob Clough, The Comics Journal “...just how a girl does it in this day and age.” -- ELLE Magazine “Packed with wisdom and raw experience.” -- BUST Magazine MariNaomi is the author and illustrator of the SPACE Prize-winning graphic memoir Kiss & Tell: A Romantic Resume, Ages 0 to 22, the Eisner-nominated Dragon's Breath and Other True Stories, and her self-published Estrus Comics. Feminism has always had a cyclical momentum, both in the broader movement and in our personal lives. And so this episode is about how we revolt, and also how we revolve, how we change and transform, the ways we rotate and orbit around the same feelings, or how we get over it, evolve, & move on.
