Episode #555! Blazing Combat and Atlanta! We are finally back with a new episode! Fresh off his trip to Atlanta, Scott tells us all about it and some shops he might have visited. In 1965, publisher Jim Warren and writer/editor Archie Goodwin produced Blazing Combat magazine. Each black and white issue was illustrated by the top comic book artists of the time including Wally Wood, Gene Colan, John Severin, Alex Toth, George Evans and Russ Heath. Although only four issues were completed, all featured covers painted by Frank Frazetta. We check out Fantagraphics' Blazing Combat HC which features each issue and interviews with Warren and Goodwin. Definitely check it out!

"Don't forget what was sacrificed. And keep fighting in the ways you can. You are still occupied. You are still here. You are born of real survivors. So go live.” These are the powerful words from my guest, comic book artist Jim Terry (Ho-Chunk), in his book “Paper Cut”. I really enjoyed this casual conversation with Jim, who lives not far from me in Chicago. He opened my eyes to the history and presence of the Ho-Chunk people — “people of the big voice.” You might also know them by the name once given to them: Winnebago. And by the way — did you know “Chicago” (or chicagoua) most likely comes from the Algonquin word for onions… or maybe even garlic? Jim and I also talked about his life as a freelance artist, the funny (and sometimes awkward) conversations between Native and non-Native people, and the deeper, more personal themes behind his book “Come Home, Indio”. In it, he opens up about feelings of not belonging and a lifelong journey toward making peace (or something like it) with the treatment of our Native American ancestors. We also touched on the story of Edward E. Ayer — a lumber baron who, in 1911, donated 17,000 Native American manuscripts, photos, and artifacts to the Newberry Library. Today, that collection has grown to over 130,000 volumes. (Some of those items also found a home at Chicago's Field Museum.) Jim was honored to be commissioned by the Newberry Library for their Indigenous Chicago program, creating artwork inspired by those thousands of historical documents. It follows Michael Theodore Mouse (stage name: "Mickey") who feels lost. A huge star for decades, he's now the burnt out CEO of a massive company, and he longs for the happier days of his youth.  In Part 1, we discuss the origin of Cheer Up, Michael!, real-life experiences that have impacted the story, the balancing act of writing characters, and strategies for writing characters who have both affection and annoyance for the main character. Check out Cheer Up, Michael!, we highly recommend it (plus, it's free)! To hear more about Sarah's career, then please also listen to S04E24.  The Runs Podcast Season 2 Finale!  We're closing out strong, with another deep dive into Peter Bagge's Indy comics canonical series, Hate, with Whit Taylor (Fizzle, Dead Air, The Nib), who is one of my very favorite people to dish comics with.  We get into the nuts and bolts of this series, which really arrives at its fully-formed self in these issues.  Great character development, compelling stories, and unique and expertly crafted cartooning is present in each issue.  We also discuss some of the aspects of the series that are more difficult to talk about, as what was controversial in the 90's may be unacceptable for some audiences today.  Does it hold up?  Listen and find out! Thanks so much to everyone who listened to this season!  Drop me a line if you want me to do another one.  Here's a link to The Runs Comics Podcast on iTunes.  And here's the link to the show on Spotify.  Nth Man: The Ultimate Ninja is a series that I never gave a chance as a kid, and it would have stayed that way if Zack Soto (The Secret Voice, Power Button. Study Group) hadn't chosen it for this episode.  This series is an early 90's deep cut, featuring World War 3, a Stevan Seagal-esque American Ninja, and some rather overt parallels to Akira. Was I pleasantly surprised, or is this another episode where I complain about the run the entire time?  Either way, Soto declares this to be Larry Hama's masterpiece, and this episode could be the start of an online campaign to finally have this series collected in a nicely bound book.  You heard it here first!   Here's a link to The Runs Comics Podcast on iTunes.  And here's the link to the show on Spotify. This is one of the most divisive runs in Spider-Man History, as evidenced by Mark declaring that it's the run that made him a Spider-Man lifer and me dumping all over it.  In a very unintuitive-for-the-internet approach, things never get heated, we just each present our opposing point of views of praise and scorn for this love-it-or-hate it run.  I will, however, apologize in advance to all of Mark's regular listeners for being such a negative Nancy.   Here's a link to The Runs Comics Podcast on iTunes.  And here's the link to the show on Spotify. Show Notes Provided by Joe Peluso   Our fascination with pop culture affords us many pleasures. We get to regularly experience stories of wonder, excitement, and hope. We gape in awe at the images that leap from the minds and souls of creatives that transport us to "strange new worlds", and "never-ending battles". But perhaps the greatest pleasure derived from our immersion in pop culture--old and new--is something that never gets old; Our enjoyment of the shared experience with friends.    Bonds are forged, and friendships are created when we discover there are more of "us" out there looking to discuss and dissect the latest issue of Batman, or the most recent episode of Star Trek: Picard. And every so often, through the magic and majesty of comics, TV, and movies an old friendship, sundered by time and geography, is renewed.    I'm your apologetic, long-winded host, Joe, who through the auspices of my good friend, James Louie, was given the opportunity to renew a friendship of my youth.    What follows is an interview with Keith Williams, a forty-year veteran of comics and comic strips. Keith is an award-winning creator who has worked for DC, and Marvel, and studied under Will Eisner--WILL EISNER! He's worked with Joe Sinnott, and John Byrne, and plied his skills for ten years on Lee Falk's Phantom comic strip. And those are just some of Keith's accomplishments.        With this fun-filled interview, I think it's no secret here that I got to accomplish something also. After almost forty years, I got the opportunity to speak to a buddy I worked with in my Barnes and Noble Bookstore days. I experienced the "wonder, excitement, and hope" that stems from our shared devotion to pop culture--a common bond that led me to a renewed friendship. I think I'm a lucky guy!       I sincerely hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did.
