The birth of a baby is a wonderful, yet very complex process. There are many physical and emotional changes that occur for both the mother and the baby. Alena Smith tells her story to the ladies this week of how she and her husband were blessed with two miracles that unfortunately arrived prematurely and experienced staying in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) 6 years apart.

While studying at St. Thomas University, Mrs. Alton worked for several different law firms in addition to her involvement in extra curricular organizations such as the Cuban-American Student Bar Association and the Intercultural Human Rights Law Review. Currently, Mrs. Alton enjoys being involved in her local community and is an active Board Member of the Miami Lakes Bar Association. She focuses her practice on personal injury and business law, and enjoys helping individuals realize their dreams and goals. As a small business owner herself, she prides herself on representing business owners who are growing within their industries and need the right legal documents in place to protect themselves, their business, and their assets. When she is not fighting for her client's rights, Mrs. Alton enjoys spending time with her husband, their three (3) wild children, and their lovable English Bulldog, Lupin.

She captures personal stories and intimate moments centering Black liberation, immigrant justice, and women's rights. An Afro-Caribbean artist who remains rooted in her community, St. Clair grounds her work in radical love, joy and the knowledge that a more just world is possible.

This week, the Ladies chat with Surayya Parker. Surayya Parker company, Olive's Organic Garden, is a tribute to her grandmother who first introduced her to the mindfulness of healthy and organic living. Olive's Organic Garden is Surayya's way of giving back to the communities that need it most. As a New York City-born and raised native, she knows firsthand how difficult it can be to have access to healthy and nutritious foods, especially in underserved areas. Olive's Organic Garden is more than a garden, it is a Healing Place.

After years of feeding people experiencing homelessness from her own kitchen, Jasmine founded Goodr in 2017, a tech company that combats hunger and food waste. Jasmine also gave a TED Talk where she called for a radical transformation to our fight to end global hunger -- challenging people to rethink the routine approaches to addressing food insecurity and sharing how we can use technology to gather unused food and deliver it directly to people in need. Jasmine is the author of "Everybody Eats", a story about a girl named Carter who volunteers at a food bank for the first time. Hunger takes on a personal note when she runs into one of her friends from school. After reading a book on how she can help fight against hunger, Carter goes on a journey through her community to do what she can and teach others how they can help, too!

The ladies speak with Michelle Gabriel-Caldwell this week about her doula services! Michelle and Brent have been married since 1997, they always knew they wanted children. Blessed with two great kids, they didn't realize how impactful the birthing experiences were until sharing theirs with friends and family. Michelle's first pregnancy was normal and perfect, she wanted the same for the labor and birth...normal, natural. She took Bradley Method Classes, hired a doula and had a low intervention, natural hospital birth. Second time around she was older and wiser, birth two would be at home on Christmas night...same birth team! Both ​of them were inspired to teach The Bradley Method and they have been doing so since 2006. ​ Michelle is also a Certified Labor Doula, Evidence Based Birth Instructor and National Black Doula Association Doula Trainer & Mentor. In her spare time she loves supporting The Birth Center of NJ as their Doula Coordinator and Childbirth Instructor.

Like much of the world, we, at the Ladies Building Legacies podcast, were shocked to hear of the passing of the actor Chadwick Boseman, who was much lauded for his performance in Black Panther as well as other hit movies over the past few years. Josie and Taneice sit with Kelli Lewis this week! Kelli has worked with small businesses for over 13 years doing bookkeeping and virtual accounting. Kelli is passionate about small businesses, as she gets to ride the wave of excitement with these entrepreneurs, while they expand and grow and exercise their creativity, passion and talent. She feels honored to be a part of their dream and help them reach their goals. Kelli grew up in South Orange, NJ and still lives nearby. Kelli’s favorite number is 7 and her favorite memory is walking to school in September on the first day of school. Having a full time job since the age of 14, Taneice has always been a hard worker determined to not allow her environment to limit her chances of being successful. She graduated from high school a year early at the age of 16, and with a full academic scholarship, went on to obtain her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Kean University. Taneice is an author, Real Estate Investor, and co-host of the wildly popular, Ladies Building Legacies podcast.

The ladies sit with future community leader, 20 year old, Dayjah Leneus this week as she shares the many traumatic events in her life that not many people in her age group will ever experience. Growing up, Dayjah has had plenty of support from her immediate family, as well as her extended family. If it wasn’t for all the support and love she had, she may not be where she is today. By the age of 17, she had a total of 5 brain surgeries. Those surgeries have affected her socially, mentally, and physically, but she pushed through it all she stayed positive. Now, she uses her experiences to help connect with others and motivate them to keep pushing themselves to reach their goals, even with their personal challenges in life.

The Shani Baraka Women's Resource Center is located in Newark, NJ and is a multi-faceted agency dedicated to providing comprehensive services to meet the needs of women and their families in crisis and transition. The goal of this center is to provide support, care, protection and empowerment for women of all ages in Newark, NJ. The Center provides a myriad of programs and services facilitated by the City of Newark and several community partners. Services will be designed to target the cause of the crisis, not just symptoms.
