In this episode of Laid Open Podcast, I welcome back Dr. Keesha Ewers, a specialist in integrative medicine and functional sexology. We discuss the critical yet often overlooked topic of menopause, highlighting how women's health issues, particularly post-childrearing, are neglected in society and underfunded in research.  Dr. Keesha and I provide insights into hormone replacement therapy (HRT), discussing various options like pellets, patches, and creams and emphasizing the importance of bioidentical hormones. We explain why not everyone needs HRT and the significant role of lifestyle choices, diet, and exercise in managing menopause symptoms.  Our conversation also delves into how the body communicates its needs through everyday signs like urine color, vaginal health, and bowel movements. Additionally, we explore the impact of trauma, stress, and genetic factors on hormone levels.  Dr. Keesha and I encourage listeners to tune into their bodies and get curious about their symptoms, offering practical advice on how to start addressing menopausal issues holistically. Every episode is now on YouTube, which you can watch via the link in my bio or by searching LaidOPEN.  Additionally, the best way to support my work is by liking, sharing, and leaving a review for my podcast.

Solving the Autoimmune Disease Puzzle Women are diagnosed with 80% of the over 145 identified autoimmune diseases (that number is still growing). Over 90% of the population has a form of autoimmune disease and inflammation. Several autoimmune diseases, including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, myasthenia gravis, and multiple sclerosis, afflict women anywhere from two to 10 times more often than they do men. Getting to the root cause to reverse autoimmunity is possible. There are 3 root causes that functional medicine doctors spend most of their time talking about. There is one more piece to the autoimmune puzzle that affects women more than it does men. Dr. Keesha Ewers calls this the “missing piece” of the complex autoimmune puzzle. Dr. Keesha is one of the 50 million Americans who received an autoimmune diagnosis. Dr. Keesha Ewers is a board certified Functional and advanced Ayurvedic medical practitioner as well as Doctor of Sexology, Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, Psychotherapist, and the founder and medical director of the Academy for Integrative Medicine Health Coach Certification Program. "I wound up having this trauma happen at the hands of the vice principal. Well, then every time the intercom goes off for every morning's Pledge of Allegiance and secretarial announcements, I go into freeze and terror. And the meaning I created is "I'm not safe." - Dr. Keesha Ewers   In this episode, Dr. Keesha Ewers joins me to discuss the connection between the freeze response and autoimmunity. We look at the body's freeze response during traumatic experiences and how those triggers lead to a pattern of nervous system reactivity. We also dive deeper into the freeze response and why it is more common in children. These traumatic experiences can lead to the formation of beliefs and adaptive behaviors that persist into adulthood.   We take a deeper look at unresolved anger, specifically unexpressed anger turned towards oneself, and how it is associated with autoimmune conditions. The question we want to answer is: How is the freeze response behind autoimmunity? Everything in nature is made up of five elements: air, water, earth, fire, and space… Likewise, we have five energy systems that we can tie to each of them. Everyone has at least one (but likely two or more) of these energy patterns that we pull from in response to stress, trauma, and day to day life.  By knowing our energy systems, we're able to better understand why specific emotions show through in stressful situations - it allows us to recognize subconscious patterning that we may have otherwise been unaware of. It also enables us to discover useful methods that work to balance that energy in a more positive way. In this episode, Dr. Keesha and Regan Claire dive deeper into the five energy systems - join them as they explore some of the most powerful healing practices for each of the patterns, so you can find balance and begin to heal from traumatized energy. Trauma is not physically held in our bodies - instead, it's tucked away in the memory and emotional centers of the brain. In order to protect ourselves, it becomes a signal for the nervous system to activate whenever a similar situation occurs...  The problem with that is - you will habitually look for it to happen again and when our nervous system is constantly replaying that response, it becomes overactive - eventually leading to a flood of unwanted symptoms, complications, and ultimately disease.  In this week's episode of Liberating Generations, Dr. Keesha and Regan Claire dive deep into the impact that trauma has on your immune system and why getting to the root of the problem is absolutely imperative for your health.  Tune in to hear more about: [00:44] - The missing pieces to autoimmunity[05:08] - Trauma and your nervous system[12:37] - Stress is a spiritual gymnasium [17:57] - What perceptions have to do with gut health[21:25] - Hypervigilant minds create hypervigilant immune systems  Connect with Dr. Keesha Ewers - Instagram: @dr_keesha_ewers TikTok:  @liberating_generations Facebook: Keesha Ewers Connect with Regan Claire - Instagram: @tasteofliberation

There are two types of expectations... Shared agreements made between people, like exchanging vows on your wedding day or signing a contract - you understand you have a responsibility and you expect something in return from the other person(s) involved.  And then there are implied expectations... For example, a mother expects her grown child to come home for the holidays or a waitress expects to be tipped well for good service - this is more of an unspoken assumption that was never actually "agreed" upon by everyone involved. This type of expectation is yours alone and it's simply not fair to hold others to it, even when you're left disappointed. In this episode, Dr. Keesha and Regan Claire talk about how our expectations play a huge role in our disappointment and the importance of not letting it stop you in your tracks - but to take your experiences and gain the wisdom you need to go from disappointment intolerance to tolerance of disappointment. Growing up in a dangerous household can breed challenges many kids and teens should never have to face. At only 9 years old, our guest Brian Vaszily witnessed his father turning towards alcohol and away from his family, creating a home that had no stability but a lot of uncommunicated pain.  Later on in life as he watched his father win the battle against addiction, Brian discovered that the real story is not WHAT substance people may take, but WHY they chose to “self-medicate” in the first place.  Dr. Vaszily took that lesson and ran with it. He has worked closely with many top doctors, researchers, and natural health organizations, trying to figure out how trauma and the toxic burden your body carries can affect your aging process and your skin health.
