“High protein” has turned into a bit of a marketing buzzword. I'm seeing it plastered on everything from snack bars to cereals and even crisps. Is this actually necessary? Are we getting enough protein in our diet, or are some of us actually under-consuming this vital macronutrient? Do we need supplements and powders or are whole foods enough? And what about the debate between animal based proteins and plant based? That's why I've put everything I've gleaned from the research and years of cooking into my new book, Healthy High Protein, which is out tomorrow.I'm sitting down with our Science Content Lead, Sakina, to share my take on some of these big questions about protein. We'll discuss:Why I think the protein guidelines are set too lowHow eating more protein affects brain health, metabolic health and energyHow to eat more protein in a healthy way that supports your gut and reduces inflammationPlus, my favourite protein sources and how I use them in recipesBuy Healthy High Protein here

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit bequranic.substack.comWelcome back to Day 4 of the BeQuranic 2025 Challenge! This January, we're diving into Surah Al-Mulk—one ayah a day. We'll break down the Tajweed rules, explore its meaning, and reflect on the timeless lessons it holds for our lives. For those of you taking up the extra challenge, you'll also be memorising an ayah a day so that, by the end of January, you'll have memorised the entire Surah. And don't forget: reciting Surah Al-Mulk every night is not just a habit—it's a protector. As the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, it will guard us from the punishment of the grave. Now, before we get started, a quick note—I'm feeling a little under the weather today. My voice and tajweed aren't quite up to scratch because of this stuffed nose! But Alhamdulillah, I've got Sakeenah with me today, and she'll be reading ayah 4 from Surah Al-Mulk for us.Be Quranic is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Tajweed BreakdownIn this ayah, we come across a new tajweed rule: Mim Mushaddada, where the mim has a shaddah on it. This rule is called Wajibul Ghunnah, meaning it's compulsory to make a ghunnah—that lovely nasal sound. Now, because of my stuffed nose, I can't give you a proper example today, but Sakina demonstrated it perfectly. The ghunnah lasts for two harakat, like a double beat.We also see Ikhfa here, which involves merging the sound of noon saakinah with the following letter, Qaf, but maintaining the nasal tone. Then we have Qalqalah, a bouncing sound with the letter Ba.Each of these rules brings beauty and precision to the Qur'anic recitation. It's a reminder that even in the way we pronounce the Qur'an, there's perfection and harmony.Meaning of Ayah 4Now let's reflect on the meaning of this powerful ayah.In ayah 3, Allah directed us to observe the heavens, marvel at their perfection, and reflect on the vastness of His creation. In ayah 4, He doubles down on that message:“Thumma raji' il-basar karratayn yanqalib ilaikal basaru khasi'an wa huwa haseer.”“Then look again and again; your gaze will return humbled and exhausted.”Allah challenges us: Keep looking at the universe, examine it deeply. You won't find a single flaw. The deeper you look, the more you'll be awestruck by its precision and beauty. This ayah reminds us of the two types of revelation Allah has given us:1. The Qur'an—the recited revelation that connects us to Allah through dhikr (remembrance).2. The Universe—the observed revelation that inspires tafakkur (deep contemplation). When you pair dhikr with tafakkur, you create a cycle of spiritual growth. You recite the Qur'an, which inspires you to reflect on Allah's creation, and that reflection brings you back to the Qur'an with renewed understanding. It's a journey that continually deepens your connection to Allah. The Power of ContemplationThink about this: The universe we observe stretches 13.8 billion light-years in all directions. That's just the observable universe! Beyond that, it's even greater, far beyond what we can measure.

Today we give you our third pediatric clinical case with Dr. Sakina Butt. Sakina is a neuropsychologist and the neuropsych postdoctoral fellowship training director at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital; she is board certified in clinical neuropsychology and in the pediatric subspecialty.  For this case, Sakina talks about a toddler with neonatal abstinence syndrome whom she saw for a neuropsychological evaluation.

I personally love my airfryer, I've been using it at home and in the Doctor's Kitchen studio since the start of the year, but can they be considered a ‘healthier' cooking method? This is a question I'm often posed online so we did some research and looked at a few studies. Air fryers aren't a new invention, in fact they've been around for a number of years but the popularity of them has soared over the last 2 years. The way air fryers cook foods is by circulating hot hair containing tiny droplets of oil around the foods. It actually mimics the effect of submerging food in hot oil but using significantly less oil. So, it allows quick and even cooking and creates crispy coatings on the outside of the food, with less calories, hence the reputation for being a ‘healthier alternative' to frying. On todays episode we looked at the pros and cons of airfrying across a number of domains including:Cost and conveniencePreservation of nutrientsThe detrimental impact of excessive heat on the oils and fat usedHow they compare with other methods including oven roasting and sauteing The environmental impact considering the materials they are made fromPlus our overall take on how I'm now using my airfryer and newer gadgets to look out for!

“How to eat with friends and be healthier”When was the last time you sat down at a dinner table and shared a meal with friends over laughter and stories? If you're lucky, you'll be able to remember a time in the last couple of days. And if you're averse to the idea of going through the effort of having to find someone to share a meal with, research shows it has benefits!Recent studies found that regularly eating with others is linked to feeling happier, more satisfied with life and trusting of others. For children and adolescents, frequent family meals were associated with better health outcomes. But why? We'll talk about the evidence based reasons for the health benefits of sharing food around a table, including the evolutionary link as an adaptive benefit from our hunter-gatherer ancestors to the psychological reasons as well as practical benefits!I'll certainly be eating with friends twice a week from now on! A common question I get is whether the sugar in fruit could be as dangerous and toxic as the sugar we find in canned drinks, sweets and other sources of added sugars found mostly in processed foods. And sugar has been a hot topic of discussion in the past few years particularly as people become more aware of the importance of regulating blood sugar levels and avoiding large & frequent spikes. In addition, we hear regularly from health organisations and experts that we should eat less sugar because of its deleterious effects on the body. But we're also told we should eat more fruit, which naturally contains sugar. So is sugar in fruit bad or is there more to it?Today we talk aboutThe science behind the sweetness: why plants produce sugars, the types of sugars and amounts found in different fruitHow sugar in fruit is handled by the bodyWhether fructose is better than glucoseSome tips to enjoy fruit while being aware of blood glucose levels

At first glance, the book I'm talking about today seems like the ultimate odd-couple pairing – a insightful analysis of the condition & economic prospects of women in India, combined with the adoration of a national movie icon. However, as it turns out, these two subjects might not be so disparate after all. Today I had the pleasure of speaking with Shrayana Bhattacharya, an Indian economist about her 2021 book, Desperately Seeking Shah Rukh. The book follows Shrayana's time spent collecting data on women's ambiguously defined and chronically undervalued employment across India. Over time, she started to notice a thread common to many of the women and girls she spoke to: a love for a certain Bollywood superstar called Shah Rukh Khan – a love which she in fact shared. Unlike other male action movie stars in India who are big on muscle and short on emotion, Shah Rukh, with his sad, gentle eyes, slighter frame, and willingness to help his cinematic leading ladies peel carrots and wash dishes, has struck a unique chord with the country's women. A lack of financial freedom and bodily autonomy hangs over the lives of the women Shrayana talks to – eighty percent of Indian women need approval from a family member to go outside the home to visit a health centre (171), and three in five adolescent girls feel unsafe in public places (196), she tells us. However, what shines through this text is the off-the-charts wattage of respect and affection with which she tells their stories – allowing both the harsh realities of these women's day-to-day lives and their playful, pragmatic crush on a good-looking movie star to exist simultaneously. Even though the book is a rigorous and detailed sociological analysis, the writing is accessible, fun and witty. It would be a perfect read for someone who is interested in feminism, economics and politics, but who might equally be a little apprehensive about approaching the drier tomes that tend to populate non-fiction bestseller lists. Books mentioned in the episode: One book about India (non-fiction): (50.10) Dreamers: How Young Indians are Changing the World, Snigdha Poonam, about the dreams of various segments of Indian youth. One book about India (fiction): (51.55) Ghachar Ghochar, Vivek Shanbhag (translated by Srinath Perur), a family rags to riches story set in Bangalore. Favourite book I've probably never heard of (52.33): The Higher Education of Geetika Mehendiratta, Anuradha Marwah a coming of age story about a young girl. Best book she's read in the last 12 months (53:22): Sakina's Kiss, Vivek Shanbhag (translated by Srinath Perur), (54.01)  Book she has found disappointing in the last 12 months (54.10): She found a whole genre disappointing – nonfiction accounts of very powerful men writing about themselves and the economy, vanity trip stories about themselves and how they became powerful Desert Island Book (55.24): The Odd Woman and the City, Vivian Gornick, a memoir about friendship and aging, set in New York City, published in 2015 Book that changed her mind (56.15): Future Sex: A New Kind of Free Love, Emily Witt, a guide to modern sexuality, published in 2016 Find Shrayana: Instagram: @bshrayana Twitter: @bshrayana Buy her book: https://amzn.eu/d/2YpWR4A Follow me @litwithcharles for more book reviews and recommendations!

In this episode we talk about a forthcoming graphic novel adaptation of C.L.R. James' play Toussaint Louverture: The Story of the Only Successful Slave Revolt in History.  The text of this graphic novel is a play by C.L.R. James that opened in London in 1936 with Paul Robeson in the title role. For the first time, black actors appeared on the British stage in a work by a black playwright. In this conversation we talk to Sakina Karimjee and Nic Watts who adapted James' play into graphic novel form and illustrated it. We talk about how C.L.R. James dramatized the Haitian Revolution and its various contradictions and characters and how they sought to tell this story through a graphic novel, using James' script. Along the way we talk about many aspects of the revolution, about the story's protagonist Toussaint Louverture, about the relentless imperialist pursuit of Haiti, which was ongoing throughout the revolutionary period and continues into the present day. And we also discuss why the Haitian revolution is so suppressed in popular culture and popular representations of history, despite being one of the single most important events in world history.  The book will be out on October 10th from Verso Books, but in the meantime you can pre-order it wherever you buy books. Today's guest is Sakina Arsiwala, Co-Founder of Taki. We begin our conversation by discussing Sakina's experience working at NextDoor. Sakina explains how NextDoor enabled trust by ensuring the users of the platform were verified and how that helped create a flywheel effect for getting users to use and trust the platform. We discuss the lessons blockchain startups can take from NextDoor's success. We transitioned our discussion to focus on Taki. Taki is an engage-to-earn social network which aims to create a better community by rewarding users with a stake in the network itself. Traditional social networks have become stagnant and exploitative: bombarding users with advertisements, operant conditioning for engagement, and preventing free movement. These problems stem from a fundamental incentive misalignment between the users who create value and the platform that extracts it. The new tools and paradigms of web3 offer an opportunity to create a better system. Engage-to-earn rewards user contributions. Free-flowing tokens enable low-friction value transfer. User coins deepen creator-audience relationships and create new engagement vectors. Decentralized organizations grant users governance over their own platform. Composability on-chain unlocks the interoperable potential of the whole blockchain ecosystem. Taki promises a better social network, shifting focus from the social graph to the value graph. Sakina has held Product and Growth leadership positions at Nextdoor, YouTube (She took Youtube International, launched 22 countries, including India), was Product Lead on Google Search Internationally. She also co-founded a social startup that was acquired by Groupon, where she led Social Product Growth for Groupon. She loves building products that help level the playing field. We discuss Taki, Web3's promise, the future of Social Networks, the Creator Economy, and much more. Sakina explains who is currently their core user base and how they imagine expanding their user base over time. Sakina goes on to explain Taki's value proposition to content creators and how web3 enables them to have more control over their careers. We discuss why Taki is focusing on UX and why simplifying the user experience is how you onboard the next wave of crypto participants. Sakina explains engage-to-earn and why this model can be so powerful for both creators and their fans. We discuss the importance of thoughtful token economics and Taki's approach to ensuring proper token dynamics. We discuss the future of advertising in web3 and how web3 can help create a better advertising experience. Sakina discusses the mission of web3 and the importance of building products and services that enable web3's core ethos. Our final conversation topic centered around the importance of interoperability and synergy for the long term value proposition of web3 to come to fruition. Sakina stresses the importance for protocols to strive to be self-sustaining. Please enjoy my conversation with Sakina Arsiwala

He is also one of the very few consultants in the UK who holds a certification in musculoskeletal, pain medicine and is board certified in lifestyle medicine. Longcovid, Pain Medicine and Trauma informed practice are subjects that Deepak is passionate about and today Sakina chats to him about:DIY vs DWY medicineSleep and it's impact on chronic painSetting the circadian rhythm, sunlight and caffeineMaking complementary therapy more accessibleHe hosts the PainSpeak podcast and is the author of the Best Seller “The Pain Free Mindset” released in 2021 and it's by far one of my favouroite books. It's aimed at patients suffering with pain but it's also immensely useful for all healthcare professionals in understanding all the recent advances around pain management in a trauma informed manner.

Dr David Unwin is on the podcast with Sakina today. Many of you will recognise him as the GP from the Norwood Surgery in Southport, who is a strong advocate of lifestyle medicine and a low carb diet. To date 110 of his patients have achieved drug free remission of their T2 Diabetes. He is the RCGP National Champion for Collaborative Care and Support Planning in Obesity and Diabetes and a RCGP Clinical Expert in Diabetes. His work on diabetes has been published in multiple journals and it is pretty impressive. But Dr Unwin's work is unconventional and doesn't come without criticism from many academics who fear that a low carb strategy is not an appropriate diet longterm. What I like about Unwins approach is the simplicity of it and how achievable it has proven to be for many of his patients. I also believe he genuinely cares about this huge problem. What I feel this conversation lacks is a deep dive into mechanisms behind low carb diets, the applicability of it to the wider population, the pitfalls and where people can slip up. For example I know many patients who start a low carb approach on a Monday and fall back to high sugar consumption later in the week which is a dangerous combination of high fat, high sugar and is essentially a standard American diet. We'll have to get Dr Unwin back on the pod at some point in the future but for now I'm sure you'll enjoy listening to him talk about how he started getting interested in nutritional interventions and how we could start using them today.
