Put on your prose tinted glasses and join us as we discuss fandoms, book opinions, and life through those lenses.
Bailey Uetrecht & Katie Phillips
We're back, baby!Join us as we discuss BookTok's most exciting and controversial new fave, Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. Is it as good as the 4.70 Goodreads Rating suggests? Is it as bad as the numerous TikToks calling it overrated would have you believe? Is it just The Fast and the Furious But With Dragons? What are the differences between Romantic Fantasy and Fantasy Romance, and which genre is called Romantasy????Also since we (as per usual) forgot to give the spoiler warning up top, SPOILER WARNING for all of Fourth Wing.
This week, a semi-reverse Prose Tinted Classic, where Bailey has read the book and Katie has not! First we deliver an Extremely Good Summary, As Always, then we go on to discuss Aldous Huxley's remarkable prescience in regards to contemporary consumer culture and the ways his dystopia compares and contrasts the Orwellian 1984 dystopia. We also manage to compare Brave New World to both Pride and Prejudice and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, somehow! And it wouldn't be a Prose Tinted Glasses Episode if we didn't get wildly distracted! This week's distractions include Hocus Pocus 2, anti-intellectualism, anti-anti-intellectualism, and the dumb tier naming conventions of streaming platforms.P.S. Sorry about Katie's audio in this one, she lost her Good Microphone (but she has since found it!)
This week, we discuss Don't Worry Darling, including our weird theater experiences, the extensive drama surrounding the cast and production, and how we just wanted a tiny bit more everything. The movie was Certainly Something TM. Katie breaks down said real-life drama before Bailey reveals how seeing this movie with no background information went. Katie tries to make Bailey guess the twist to another movie at the end, which doesn't go well (for the movie or Bailey.)
This week we are talking about the new book “The Sunbearer Trials” by Prose Tinted Fave, Aiden Thomas! We give one of our patented Very Good Summaries, talk Hunger Games/Percy Jackson parallels, and praise Aiden Thomas's comprehensive and effortless inclusivity. Please forgive our attempts to Pronounce Spanish Words, and stick around to the end, where we take a Buzzfeed Quiz to determine who our Sunbearer Trials Godly Parent would be!
We'll be honest, we didn't really have a plan for this one. Topics we cover in this episode include but are not limited to:our most anticipated reads for the rest of the year(ish)fandom cringeStranger Things shipping warsthe etiquette of coffee at weddingsCurrent High Fantasy Premiere Television And The Diversity Thereinwhether or not Harry Styles spit on Chris Pineand more!So come hang out with us while we take this one easy and enjoy each other's company!
An episode in which we finally tackle a genre we've referenced but never discussed in depth! This week we talk about thrillers as a genre and in particular three of our fave (or not) recent thriller reads from three juggernauts of the genre. Katie tries to convince Bailey to watch some of the Fast and the Furious movies by telling her that the most recent one literally had a car in space (actually!!!) but for some reason Bailey doesn't find that interesting. We touch on the intersection of thrillers and the true crime fandom as well as the growing and necessary discourse about Ethics In True Crime, and wrap it up with some quick YA thriller recs.
This week is somehow also mildly John Green-related as we read Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin, a novel John Green blurbed as "one of the best books [he's] ever read". We take some small detours to Bailey's Accursed Target and Hulu's new movie Not Okay giving content warnings for an Unlikeable Female Protagonist, but mainly we dive deeper and deeper into this beautiful novel about creativity, friendship, and life.
We're back to finish out our discussion on John Green! We talk about the rest of his books, some overarching themes we think are present in his works, and whether or not we agree with some of the criticisms often leveled against him. We also discuss being Cringe as teens and The Cult of Buc-ee's (Hail to the Beaver).
This week we talked about John Green for so long that you're getting a surprise (to all of us) 2-part episode! In this episode we give you A Brief History of John (and Hank) Green as well as talk about John's first 3 novels, our experiences with them, the ways in which we did (or mostly didn't) misbehave as Youths, and the correct way to spell Katherine. And it wouldn't be a John Green episode if we didn't talk about the Manic Pixie Dream Girl and whether or not we think John Green's novels contribute to or deconstruct the trope!
Casey McQuiston has done it again! Join us as we discuss their debut YA novel, I Kissed Shara Wheeler. We discuss things such as pop culture references in media works, Katie brings up Taylor Swift, Bailey discusses her high school dress code in comparison with Willowgrove, and there is a lot of talking about Paper Towns. Somehow, we manage not to get that sidetracked in this episode. There is no fun game this week, we just gush over the announced cast for the Red, White, and Royal Blue adaptation!
This week, Katie and Bailey talk about Nora Roberts' fantasy series: The Chronicles of the One. Join us as we get maybe a little too critical about a series we ultimately really like (story of our life???)! We talk about the inconsistent tone, the vague Bad Guy Motivations, Aggressive Heterosexuality, and, most importantly, how the very best character Deserved More (#JusticeForJoe).
DON'T PANIC! This week we're covering The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. In the spirit of absurdism and wild-ass tangents, we briefly become a John Oliver Fan Podcast, then go on a quick rant about deconstructing the capitalist Girlboss hellscape before reboarding the Heart of Gold with Arthur, Ford, Trillion, and Zaphod Beeblebrox. Grab your towel and hang out with us while we search for the answer (or maybe the question?) to life, the universe, and everything.
The Gay Pirate Show! You KNOW we had to watch this show and immediately take to tumblr like the blue hell site nerds we are. Then we had to tell all of you about it! Listen in for our takes on different aspects of the show (tone, romance, etc) and also Katie's absolute exasperation that Bailey can't tell actors apart. We all have our flaws, but at least we can agree on a favorite character. As usual, we play a little game at the end before we sign off.
It is time to talk about the dumpster fire that is Fantastic Beasts, on both a story level and a franchise level. We recap the movies, from the sweet first one to the incoherent second, and then the newest installment, Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore. We are left wondering why we aren't finding any Fantastic Beasts, and who is reviewing ANY of this content for errors. This episode required beers and thus results in a pretty hefty rant. TW: This episode contains discussion about transphobia, assault, and Nazis.
This week we discuss Netflix's big hit - Bridgerton! While Katie has read and loves Julia Quinn's novels, Bailey has only seen the show. We compare notes about likes, dislikes, and changes. Katie struggles not to spoil future seasons while explaining Bad Changes In The Show. Bailey mostly dislikes things reading the books would fix (who knew!). Stay tuned at the end for a fun little game and to hear what we are currently reading.
This week, we talk about receiving blue boxes in the mail: Book of the Month Club. The episode discusses the concept, the good, the disappointing, and features a rehash of one of our favorite rants. There's spite from Katie, Bailey volunteers to mod a subreddit, and more.
This week we talk about Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim! Join us as we give our thoughts on this book that made Katie's Top 5 Reads of 2021 and go through the fairy tales that inspired the author! We start the episode with a brief discussion of Brandon Sanderson's Kickstarter, which ends at 11:40 if you want to skip ahead to see if our abilities to summarize a book have improved.
Join Bailey & Katie as they describe types of fandoms, briefly detouring through ancient tumblr posts, before discussing a new fandom phenomenon we've experienced: flash fandoms. Is there a Next Big Thing in fandoms, or are we stuck in a cycle of putting down one toy and picking up the next?
Bailey and Katie reflect on an entire year of podcasting through a panorama! Join us as we talk about Real Life getting in the way, upping our social media game, and ultimately still just being obsessed with talking to each other about books and stuff.
We're back with a brief Prose Tinted Classic! Bailey has once again finished the book in the nick of time to discuss it with Katie. We give a short overview of The Picture of Dorian Gray, talk about Ben Barnes, and discuss a modern retelling that is somehow more gay than the original. Then we realize we aren't running an English class and run out of things to say without deep diving into themes and symbolism.
Come find out why we are mad at the internet this week! In this unhinged episode, we take on r/books, the youths on TikTok, and why you can like something without bashing it!
Join us as we do an APPROPRIATELY TIMED End of Year Wrap Up (looking at you, Unnamed Music Service That Puts Out Our 2021 Playlist When There's Still A Month Left In The Year)! We talk our faves, our least faves, our surprise delights, and the books that unfortunately did not live up to the hype. We also talk through some stats we kept this year, what helped us get through our reading slumps (or maybe didn't, in Bailey's case), and some reads we're looking forward to in 2022.Thanks for hanging out with us this year, we can't wait to see what next year brings!
Happy Holiday Season! Katie quizzes Bailey over the descriptions of "Hallmark Holiday Books," before we move on to other Christmas things. Bruce and Dolly make it known they would like to join the festive discussion. We then discuss the results of our Hot Holiday Takes survey from Twitter dot com. Happy Holidays from Prose Tinted Glasses!
It's a Prose Tinted Classic! We tackle Pride and Prejudice, which Bailey is reading for the first time and Katie has already read. After a quick "how did you like it?", we get into more details, then cover adaptations (THE HAND) and retellings. We briefly sidetrack, as usual, but once again bond over Hating The Same Characters.
Let's talk about one of our favorite releases of the year! A great slow-burn mystery collides with our sports world for to make awesome YA debut about community and identity.Check out some of these resources to learn about the harm caused by indigenous residential schools and where to donate or take action if you're able:The Orange Path: a set of resources for non-indigenous to learn and share, and support system for indigenous peoples' healing: https://www.orangepath.ca/your-journeyhttps://www.orangeshirtday.org/https://boardingschoolhealing.org/about-us/https://www.narf.org/cases/boarding-school-healing/https://action.lakotalaw.org/action/truth-and-healing-bill/?ms=ea&utm_source=ea&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=thcb&utm_content=pslink&sourceid=1049612
Vampires, werewolves, demons, oh my! This week, we keep spooky season alive for a little longer and discuss book boyfriends of the monster type. We look through trends in monster boyfriends, try to predict the next one, and contemplate non-human anatomy. We hope you are ready for all of that - and a few tangents along the way, of course!
We're back just in time for the best season of the year! It's Halloweentime and we're here to eat overpriced candy, read vibey books, and wear matching Halloween pajamas with our dogs (...that one might just be Katie).Join us as we talk about horror books, psychological thriller books, witchy books, and books that just fit the ~vibes~ of Spooky Szn.
That's right, it's a LIVE SHOW! And, uh, the audio does reflect that.Join us as we take a trip back to high school English class, where we talk about the Hero's Journey and how omnipresent it is in some of our favorite pieces of media. We also talk about spoilers (and how some of our friends are better than others about Spoiler Etiquette), Bailey almost gets in a Twin Fight, and at the end we take requests to sort some of your favorite protagonists into their Hogwarts Houses - and some of them don't even end up in Gryffindor!A huge thanks to Fretboard Brewing in Cincinnati for hosting us! We highly recommend checking them out if you're ever in the area.
Like a Sapphic Game of Thrones if GRRM Knew How to Finish a Series AKA Pacing is Not a Strong Suit 'Round Here AKA (Insert Interlude Here)This week we discuss Samantha Shannon's The Priory of the Orange Tree, and spend an hour sounding like we didn't like it but we actually really did. We talk the world-building, all the characters, creatures, and general high fantasy takes. We really struggled with pacing in this novel but loved the prominent role of women. Bruce makes his usual appearance. Plus, an ANNOUNCEMENT!
Grab you favorite comfort book and join us as we discuss re-reading YA novels from growing up as adults. While we read a fair amount of new YA, it's been some time since we re-read the novels we grew up with in YA. We were curious to see how our reactions changed, and if the books held up. Katie rereads The Hunger Games (and reveals something scandalous, maybe?), Percy Jackson, and more, while Bailey covers Artemis Fowl, A Great and Terrible Beauty, Uglies, and for a middle-grade bonus: The Clique. We also quickly cover some adaptations and how we think YA publishing and fandom has changed.
Join as we discuss how no story is new, but more specifically noticeable trends in retellings. There is Cinderella, Cinderella, and somehow more Cinderella. We also talk mythology (truly the origin of no story is a new story), and if mythology is inherently YA. We briefly cover monster retellings before settling into more serious classical re-dos. There is plenty of mayhem in this episode, if we're being honest.
It is fanfic all the way down, baby. Join us for a discussion about fan fiction, ranging from the history (started by women!) to the current publishing of fanfic, with a quick detour about us using the library. Did you know how many books were simply published Twilight fanfic? Neither did we. We also discuss our favorite: tropes! See all the published Twilight fanfic here: https://bookriot.com/published-fanfiction-books/amp/
Join us as we discuss one of our favorite YA Fantasy novels: Legendborn by Tracy Deonn. Highlights from this episode include speculation on shipping Merthur, a deranged trip through fandom.com wikis, and of course, a breakdown of this deeply American retelling of the Arthurian Legend. This weekend, Saturday June 19th, is Juneteenth. We are including resources for education and supporting Black-owned businesses and activism. Thank you to Alexis Williams (@alexisdenisew on IG and @lelegenevieve on TikTok) for this resource document: https://www.pb-resources.com/juneteenth.htmlEat Black Owned: https://www.eatblackowned.com/
Or "How a TikTok Sound Started a Discussion About the Changes in Representation," in which we try (and fail) to recall any LGTBQ+ representation in our nostalgic YA reads. We cover some tropes gay characters were subject to, the types of stories that were typically written when the protagonist was LGTBQ+, and how that has changed over the years. Finally, we cover some current books that are gay and slap. Shout out to @thelaynierose for coining the phrase we all needed to summarize book reviews.
Two grizzled Tumblr Veterans walk you through why Hank Green's brother is famous or something. Join us as we discuss differences and surprising similarities of TikTok and Tumblr, two infamous hell sites known for meta trends, discourse, and terrifyingly toxic fandoms. And remember, we like your shoelaces.
For once, an adaptation didn't crush our souls and love for a story. The Netflix show is finally here! We obsess over the cast (mostly Milo) and discuss the plot changes (again, mostly Milo). There's good, bad, and a lot of swooning.
Naming your blade is cool (becoming it is not). We continue our journey through the Grishaverse with the Dregs, covering heists, character growth, and Even More Bad Boys. Plus, we speculate on the upcoming show.
Join us for our introduction to the Grishaverse Trilogy. Bailey walks Katie through the order of the universe, and then Katie walks Bailey through Loving a Bad Boy Even When She Knows It Is Wrong.
Come join us for a reckoning of the differences between the new adult and young adult genres (and what the publishing industry may or may not want).
This week, we break down The Grace Year by Kim Liggett! Come join our discussion of this haunting "coming of age" thriller full of twists, secret flower messages, and commentary on womanhood. As always, fuck the patriarchy.
Join us for our first episode as we talk our introduction to fandom through Harry Potter and growing up as fans. We discuss our favorite (and least favorite) books and movies from the series, movie premieres, the industry of Snape Speculation, and Bailey's sin against a book.
A podcast for fans of being fans of stuff, join Bailey and Katie at Prose Tinted Glasses as we discuss books we love, books we hate, the fandom experience (shipping wars, drama, premieres, cons, and more). Our first episode comes out February 25th!
