Every year, tuberculosis claims over a million lives despite being curable. Tuberculosis or TB is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. About 5–10% of people infected with TB will eventually get symptoms. In the early stages a TB infection might cause chest pain, a cough, night sweats, and loss of appetite. But eventually it could create holes in the lungs and cause you to cough up blood. And of course, TB can be deadly. In this episode of Tiny Matters, Sam and Deboki talk with TB researcher Uzma Khan as well as John Green, the author of books including The Anthropocene Reviewed, Paper Towns, The Fault in Our Stars, and Turtles All the Way Down. John is also the co-creator of Crash Course and one half of the vlogbrothers — the other half being his brother Hank Green, who Deboki and Sam chatted with on the show last year. Although he's best known as an author and YouTuber, last summer John made headlines for something else: fighting for more equitable access to tuberculosis treatments, particularly bedaquiline, an incredibly effective and essential medicine for patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis. In this episode, Sam and Deboki cover the science and history of this devastating yet treatable disease, the recent public pressure on companies that is leading to increased treatment and testing access, and clinical trials that make John and Uzma hopeful that one day this humanity-plaguing disease could be gone. If you'd like to learn more, go to tbfighters.org. You can also subscribe to John's newsletter: tbfighters.org/newsletter. We have a YouTube channel! Full-length audio episodes can be found here. "You know, anonymity is a luxury as well.” - Mary-Kate Olsen, 2023On Nov 17th, 2023 (that's right THIS year, just a few weeks ago) Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen sat down for an extremely rare interview with Financial Times Fashion to discuss their brand The Row and the meaning of "stealth wealth." We so rarely get a peak into Mary-Kate and Ashley's lives these days, let alone a whole snippet of a conversation between the two of them, so we jumped at the chance to do a whole episode on this article. In this interview, we get a glimpse into Mary-Kate and Ashley's approach to their business, their dynamic as adults, and a few secrets about their brand's Instagram and distaste for interviews. Most importantly, we learn straight from Mary-Kate and Ashley themselves how The Row is and always has been directly influenced by the careers they had in the spotlight (for better or for worse). What stands out the most from this interview is the strength that Mary-Kate and Ashley yield now as women. We can't help but gush about how continually proud we are of them, and how inspired we are that they've been able to take back so much control and power of their lives and careers. And my god, the quotes in this interview are ZINGERS!We hope you enjoy our deep dive into this exclusive interview (major props to the writer Jo Ellison for this impressive feat), and don't forget to read the whole interview in all its glory on Financial Times. You can also watch the video version of this ep by subscribing to our Patreon here.Find us on Social Media!Instagram: @theythoughtiwasyouTikTok: @theythoughtiwasyouBecca: @beccarothLani: @laniharmsNext week's episode is a Q&A and we need YOUR questions! KEY TAKEAWAYS: The difference between performing on stage and recording in a studio is night-and-day. When you find like-minded artists who appreciate each other's talents, you have a winning combination. Sometimes it’s the accident that makes the music. It’s called working with what you have. BIOGRAPHIES:: SON LUX BIO: From the start, Son Lux has operated as something akin to a sonic test kitchen. The Academy Award® and BAFTA-nominated band strives to question deeply held assumptions about how music is made and reconstruct it from a molecular level. What began as a solo project for founder Ryan Lott expanded in 2014, thanks to a kinship with Ian Chang and Rafiq Bhatia too strong to ignore. The trio strengthened their chemistry and honed their collective intuition while creating, releasing, and touring six recordings, including Brighter Wounds (2018) and the triple album Tomorrows (2021). The result is a carefully cultivated musical language rooted in curiosity and balancing opposites that largely eschews genre and structural conventions. And yet, the band remains audibly indebted to iconoclastic artists in soul, hip-hop, and experimental improvisation who themselves carved new paths forward. Distilling these varied influences, Son Lux searches for an equilibrium of raw emotional intimacy and meticulous electronic constructions. Son Lux has most recently scored the new Daniels film for A24, Everything Everywhere All at Once (March 2022). The full score album features new collaborations with Mitski, David Byrne, Randy Newman, and Moses Sumney, among others. Based in New York, Rafiq Bhatia is the first-generation American son of Muslim immigrant parents who trace their ancestry to India through East Africa. Early influences such as Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane, and Madlib—as well as mentors and collaborators including Vijay Iyer and Billy Hart—prompted him to see music as a way to actively shape and represent his own identity, not limited by anyone else’s prescribed perspective. When Ian Chang describes his creative process, the phrase "third culture” keeps coming up. Born in the colony of Hong Kong in 1988, Chang has lived a nomadic life. Stationed out of New York for ten years and since relocated to Dallas, Texas, he built an impressive roster of progressive pop collaborators such as Moses Sumney, Joan As Policewoman, and Matthew Dear, among others, all while performing internationally and recording as a member of Son Lux and Landlady. Ryan Lott makes his home in Los Angeles but grew up all over the United States. Music was the one constant in his formative years spent at the piano. In addition to an extensive career writing music for dance, he has become a sought-after composer for advertising, television, and film. Lott’s feature film credits include The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby (2014), Paper Towns (2015), and Mean Dreams (2017). He has co-produced and co-written music for and with Woodkid, Sufjan Stevens, and Lorde. BIOGRAPHY: QASIM NAQVI Qasim Naqvi is a drummer and founding member of Dawn of Midi. Cara Delevingne is getting real about her addiction and recovery. Rumors immediately swirled about her well-being, with her friends and family allegedly contemplating an intervention. But now, in a revealing new interview in Vogue, Cara opens up about the drastic measures she took to get her life back on track after some very dark, and very scary times.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Jay and Silent Bob learned how to overstay their welcome from the SCREAM franchise. This seems like an appropriate lesson for TRILOGY IN THEORY as our little podcast just hit 100 episodes. Spoiler alert: we don't plan on stopping anytime soon because we have yet to make any money off of this crap. Unlike the SCREAM franchise which still is held in high regards by your hosts... though maybe not this entry. At least there is Parker Posey playing the best Courtney Cox in the entire series. We question just how much Francis Ford Coppola values family... ...and how little he valued Al Pacino's hair in THE GODFATHER PART III. Or is it The GODFATHER CODA: THE DEATH OF MICHAEL CORLEONE? Take your pick for we remain decidedly unhappy. Or are we happy in our unhappiness with the finale to the Corleone family saga? Because of this and search engine optimization #ReleaseTheSnyderCut gets mentioned and to a lesser extent our shared love of SCREAM 2. Which at least mentions The Godfather sequels. Did I mention that I'm going to see SCREAM 2 the 25th anniversary theatrical showing this weekend? I've earned this. For this represents 100 episodes of TRILOGY IN THEORY. And I also watched THE GODFATHER PART III: CODA: THE DEATH OF MICHAEL CORLEONE: BUT NOT REALLY. It was fun! Much like Albert Brooks... one host can't be happy with every version of cinematic heaven. As the host with the opposite opinion of THE MAJESTIC I'll take my cheap shots on my unwitting partner in podcasting. For I write the show notes. Which is clearly important. Maybe. With DEFENDING YOUR LIFE and THE DESCENDANTS joining us in our idyllic trilogy (in theory, of course) we debate the traumas of our various leading men as they attempt to keep their previous sins away from what should be paradise. As usual, George Clooney comes out ahead. Not much of a spoiler. What is a spoiler is that THIS is our greatest trilogy and can only be topped by our very next episode. Episode 100. We can only relate to the youth of movies with a reference to THE SIMPSONS. That's still hip right? We finish our tour of lying about sex in high school across cinematic generations by both justifying titillation (thank you, WILD THINGS) and condemning it (go kick rocks, ASSASSINATION NATION.) Which leaves us to say mostly nice things about the charms of EASY A while acknowledging that its setup only really works if you have the movie star charm of Emma Stone. Two old guys are scared of young women. So just another movie podcast! Unfortunately for us (and you, dear listener) we come to our final entry in our look at modern-ish high school life with ASSASSINATION NATION. One host maintained hope that he would like this film (both times!) before the hate settles in. For fans of this film we plead ignorance immediately by trying to apply the STAR TREK good/bad rules to the HEATHERS inspired entries to a world that has blissfully passed us by. So there's that. Enjoy? As means of apology here is a bonus episode to the high school cinematic experience that is pure joy for the hosts as they go back to talking PAPER TOWNS as they often do off-mic. The news dropped last week that Marvel has reportedly tapped Jake Schrier (Robot & Frank, Paper Towns) to direct a Thunderbolts movie, touted as basically Marvel's version of the Suicide Squad. Villains band together to complete missions dictated by the government. While there's little known about what Marvel's Thunderbolts will entail, the beginning of June brought She-Hulk's release date. The series will premiere on Disney Plus on Wednesday, Aug. 17. In other news in the multiverse of Marvel shifting schedules, The Marvels (Captain Marvel's sequel) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania swapped release dates. So Quantumania, the third Ant-Man movie, is set to arrive on Feb. 17, 2023, and The Marvels should open on July 28, 2023. source: Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4: The Full List of Release Dates - CNET --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/masseffect/support

Somehow wanting to jump ship from his dead-end job has him jumping through hoops for her instead. 2. Paper Towns by John Green - Realistic Fiction/ Christmas, FL When Margo Roth Spiegelman beckons Quentin Jacobsen in the middle of the night—dressed like a ninja and plotting an ingenious campaign of revenge—he follows her. Margo's always planned extravagantly, and, until now, she's always planned solo. And they're for Q. 3. Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard - Noir Crime / West Palm Beach & Miami This book is set about a not-altogether-blameless flight attendant on the run from her vicious gun-running sometimes employer who sees her as a troublesome loose end. But, if you've seen the movie, be prepared because there are some big differences between the book & the movie! The second book in a two-book series. The first is called The Switch about a kidnapping that went wrong. 4. Beyond Risk by Connie Mann - Romantic Suspense / Ocala Forest Former Fish & Wildlife Officer Charlotte "Charlee" Tanner still carries the guilt of a tragic drowning accident that occurred on her watch. She hoped moving back home to the wilds of central Florida would provide a safe haven-until she learns the death was no accident, and she's the intended target. Tough and decisive, Lieutenant Hunter Boudreau loves his new job as a law enforcement officer with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission. Charlee is his best friend, so when she comes under fire, he's not letting her out of his sight until the killer is caught. But Charlee won't sit by and let anyone else die for her. As danger closes in and Charlee and Hunter's attraction threatens to consume them, Charlee has to decide if she can trust Hunter. And to save Charlee, Hunter will have to trust her, too. 5. Tourist Season by Carl Hiaasen - PI/Mystery - Miami The first sign of trouble is a Shriner's fez washed up on a Miami beach. The next is a suitcase containing the almost-legless body of the local chamber of commerce president found floating in a canal... The locals are desperate to keep the murders under wraps and the tourist money flowing. But it will take a reporter-turned–private eye to make sense of a caper that mixes football players, politicians, and one very hungry crocodile in this classic mystery. 6. A Secret in the Keys by Hope Holloway - women's fiction / Coconut Key The last thing Beck Foster wants to do is attend a party for her estranged aunt in the Florida Keys. One month earlier, Beck's seemingly ideal existence imploded when her husband of thirty-four years announced he was leaving her. Now, she has to sell her house, get a job, and somehow put her broken heart and life back together. She can't do all that if she runs off to visit a woman she barely remembers. Or can she? Accompanied by her grown daughter who also longs for an escape, Beck heads to Coconut Key, where she'd lived the earliest years of her life. There, she forges a life-changing relationship with a woman she never really understood, dips her toes into the waters of a new romance, and begins the process of starting over. But when a secret kept for nearly fifty years comes crashing down on them, all of Beck's dreams are once again threatened. Can she forgive the lies that have shaped her life, or will the past ruin her chance at a new beginning in Coconut Key? 7. The Last Train to Key West by Chanel Cleeton - Key West/ historical fiction For the tourists traveling on Henry Flagler's legendary Overseas Railroad, Labor Day weekend is an opportunity to forget the economic depression gripping the nation. But one person's paradise can be another's prison, and Key West-native Helen Berner yearns to escape. After the Cuban Revolution of 1933 leaves Mirta Perez's family in a precarious position, she agrees to an arranged marriage with a notorious American. Following her wedding in Havana, Mirta arrives in the Keys on her honeymoon. While she can't deny the growing attraction to her new husband, his illicit business interests may threaten not only her relationship but her life. Elizabeth Preston's trip to Key West is a chance to save her once-wealthy family from their troubles after the Wall Street crash. Her quest takes her to the camps occupied by veterans of the Great War and pairs her with an unlikely ally on a treacherous hunt of his own. Over the course of the holiday weekend, the women's paths cross unexpectedly, and the danger swirling around them is matched only by the terrifying force of the deadly storm threatening the Keys. 8. Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom by Cory Doctorow - Disney / SciFi Fantasy Jules is a young man barely a century old. He's lived long enough to see the cure for death and the end of scarcity, to learn ten languages and compose three symphonies...and to realize his boyhood dream of taking up residence in Disney World. Disney World! The greatest artistic achievement of the long-ago twentieth century. Now in the care of a network of volunteer "ad-hocs" who keep the classic attractions running as they always have, enhanced with only the smallest high-tech touches. Now, though, it seems the "ad hocs" are under attack. A new group has taken over the Hall of the Presidents and is replacing its venerable audio-animatronics with new, immersive direct-to-brain interfaces that give guests the illusion of being Washington, Lincoln, and all the others. For Jules, this is an attack on the artistic purity of Disney World itself. Worse: it appears this new group has had Jules killed. This upsets him. (It's only his fourth death and revival, after all.) Now it's war: war for the soul of the Magic Kingdom, a war of ever-shifting reputations, technical wizardry, and entirely unpredictable outcomes. 9. Kingdom Keepers by Ridley Pearson Five young teens tapped as models for theme park “guides” (using a new hologram technology developed by the Disney Imagineers) find themselves pitted against Disney villains and witches that threaten both the future of Walt Disney World and the stability of the world outside its walls. Featuring a new cover design and additional content! 10. Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling While not set in Florida, you can head to Universal Studios and ride the Hogwarts Express, visit Hogsmeade & Diagon Alley, and of course, Hogwarts. Adaptations are tricky. Dan brings one from one of his favorite books, Paper Towns by John Green, and reflects on that author's role in his life. Join as Dan parses the thematic structure of the book and Brian pitches the film structure of "the crowded hour" to depict the quintessential Dan film. Together, they debate the merit of Cara Delevingne as Margo Roth Spiegelman and the improvised banter of the supporting cast. What a treacherous thing to believe that a podcast is more than a podcast. Today on The Neil Haley Show, The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview R. Keith Harris of SHIFTING GEARS. R. Keith Harris (Dr. Carson on "The Walking Dead"). Born in Tennessee, and growing up up in North Carolina, he always knew he wanted to be a performer. That drive and tenacity has since led him to a diverse range of roles. With over 70 film and TV credits under his belt, Keith has had major roles in TV and theatrical motion pictures alongside some of Hollywoods elite, including, Robert Redford, Emma Thompson, Burt Reynolds, Mikey Rooney, and more. In SHIFTING GEARS he stars as Tom, a man whose childhood dreams were long ago abandoned and then broken by corporate America and a desperate need to provide for his family unlike his own father. But a twist of fate brings opportunity to Tom's family in a way he'd never imagined. Tom (Harris) is a hard-working manager at a big box super store. He started in the stock room, always imagining himself at the helm. Now poised for a big promotion, he gets the news he always feared: “No college degree, no promotion.” In the face of this new reality, and lamenting the time he devoted to work over family, Tom and his wife, Carol (Langton), decide to change course and start a family business. They pack up their kids and move to a small town to take over a run-down garage bequeathed to them by Tom's estranged father, Clem (Drew Matthews, Paper Towns). They sink their savings into renovating the garage, only to get another unfortunate surprise - the title to the property has been contested and now must be sold at public auction, with arch nemesis Conrad Baines (Ratzenberger) poised to take over the land in the name of “economic development.”

We applaud the realistic portrayal of the high school experience in this story, and we discuss the John Green Cinematic Universe. We know text messages can be crazy. We know they can be cruel. We know they can be hilarious. And as at least 21 percent of Americans know, they can make us feel closer together. This week, we're going to examine those moments of closeness — when texting encourages intimacy between us, and when those messages really just create the illusion of deeper connection. Case in point: We're going to take a deeper look at a company called Invisible Girlfriend, fodder for countless Internet jokes. Users sign up for the service, create a bio for their "partner," and buy a package of 100 texts, ten voicemails, and one handwritten note for $25. It was conceived as a means of "proving" a fake relationship status to nagging family members or sleazy coworkers who just won't get the hint, and it runs off of a rotating workforce of actual humans behind the scenes, stepping in and out of different girlfriend and boyfriend characters. However, even its founders have been surprised by the way people have started to use it: as a safe, anonymous, always-reliable sympathetic ear to confide in at any time of day. Take a look at their FAQ: (Invisible Industries FAQ) Sure, it's the premise of the movie "Her." But 80,000 people have signed up for an invisible partner - and it's not the only sign that there is hunger for this kind of service. In China, millions of people are sending messages back and forth with Xiaoice, a "sympathetic ear" texting service powered by artificial intelligence. According to the experts, it's a social phenomenon that matters for anyone who wields a phone. The people you'll meet in this episode: Kashmir Hill, editor of Fusion's Real Future, who got a job as an Invisible Girlfriend for a month. She wrote a story about her experience, and followed up on it through some pretty eye-opening conversations with a user. "Quentin," a 30-something former customer of Invisible Girlfriend. He named his invisible partner Margo Roth Spiegelman, after the character in John Green's novel "Paper Towns." Kyle Tabor, CEO of Invisible Industries, who co-founded the company at a hackathon in St. Louis. Sherry Turkle, author of "Reclaiming Conversation." She says the desire for a sympathetic ear is growing, even though there are more and more places to "talk." EDITOR'S NOTE, 10/22/15: A number of listeners wrote in to say that our depiction of one of the main characters in this story – a man who uses a wheelchair – was not person first. They are all absolutely right. We are going to record a new version of the audio. Everyone should feel well-represented on our podcast.
