Raiders of the Podcast

This week... Insurmountable obstacles, unfortunate events, and darker obsessions collide in four films about love that wounds and scars and ends unavoidably tragic.     When a young woman is found murdered after leaving his house, down on his luck and violently tempered screenwriter Dix finds himself squarely in the police's frame. Only the testimony of his beautiful neighbor keeps him from immediate arrest. As his prosecution drags out, a relationship between them blooms. Can the blossoming relationship withstand the suspicions and outside glances? Did Dix succumb to his rage fueled impulses and will he do it again? An existential noir masterpiece with a towering lead performance, In a Lonely Place.     In the summer of 1972, young Vada Sultenfuss lives with her widowed father. Vada has a tendency toward hypochondria and a fascination with death, likely from losing her mother at birth and growing up in the town funeral parlor. This summer, Vada begins growing into her own and suffers many of life's first times. Widely considered a classic of the 1990s with a pair of fantastic child lead performances and a final act that scared a generation, My Girl.     Young Douzi is abandoned by his mother at a Peking Opera troupe. His youth is spent training to play dan, female lead, roles while his best friend, Shitou, learns jing, heroic male roles. From the brutal violence of their training, the oppressive occupation of the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the crushing repression of the Cultural Revolution, Douzi and Shitou's relationship carries them through 50 years. Beautifully shot, delicately edited, and widely considered one of the best films produced in Mainland China, Farewell My Concubine.     Two households, both alike in dignity, in fair Verona Beach, where we lay our scene, from ancient grudge break new mutiny... the star-crossed lovers draw the conclusion of Baz Luhrmann's Red Curtain Trilogy of theatrical motif. Hyper stylized with an energy that has few equals and a cast that matches it beat for beat, The Bard's most well known work's third major film adaption that still brings tears of joy to long suffering High School English teachers everywhere... William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet.     All that and Dave loses a letter, Tyler feels new emotions in a fetal positions, and Kevin likes to watch... everything. Join us, won't you?   Episode 410- Love That Scars

As an educator and mentor to young people from over 20 countries, I've developed a profound understanding of how to be human and bring forth our innate greatness using the relationships we have with ourselves and between our families, communities, and the world around us. Now, I support parents of preteens using 'The SHOW UP Framework'. This is so a parent can support their child during the preteen's 'first identity breaking', and bring forth their child's greatness. I was also a High School English teacher, so I know how to creatively simplify complex ideas to engage even the most distracted minds. I work with Certain Future to support parents of preteens (10-14 y.o.) so they can show up and maintain a meaningful relationship with their child during these natural 'identity-breaking' years. We work with parents who know the value of doing hard things and want to be present with their son/daughter before it's too late to bridge the gap. Using The SHOW Up Framework, parents benefit when working with us because: They're confident in their communication when their tween starts having big emotions. @http://www.marcushiggs.com/#ParentChildBonds #GenerationalParenting #FamilyDynamics #ParentingAdvice

Have you ever found yourself at a networking event awkwardly waiting for a break in the conversation to deliver that perfectly polished elevator pitch? Or maybe you've had a one-on-one meeting where you only received polite nods and “interesting” as feedback? On today's episode, we discuss the art of creating genuine connections and becoming a person others can't stop talking about – in a good way! The fact is, most of us understand networking and referrals to be integral to business success, but not everyone recognizes that the right way to go about them can make a world of difference. The fine line between a forgettable interaction and one that leaves a memorable impression often comes down to the way we share our expertise and engage in conversations. That's what makes today's talk especially important; it's about transitioning from formulaic pitches to fostering conversations that organically generate interest and lead to referrals. So how do you become truly referable without resorting to aggressive tactics that can turn people off? This is where our guest, Michael Roderick, comes into the picture. Michael Roderick is the CEO of Small Pond Enterprises which helps thoughtful givers become thought leaders by making their brands referable, their messaging memorable, and their ideas unforgettable. This episode was orginally recorded in November of 2022, just as we were hearing about ChatGPT and AI in education. Many of us were wondering what will happen to the way we teach and the way students learn. This is the first part of my exploration about AI in Education. My views on it, my concerns, my hopes have all changed many times over the last year and 1/2. It's interesting to go back and see how far we've come. Here is my original description of the episode: There has been an explosion of handwringing among educators and academics, and cheers from students about the strides and easy accessibility of Artificial Intelligence that will probably change the entire nature of how we educate. What can we expect? How do we adapt?  Can anything good come out of this? This is just the first in a series of examinations of this incredibly important topic that will certainly affect every aspect of education at least from middle school through higher education. On this episode it's just me and AI. We even had fun playing The 5-Minute Game Show! Well, at least I did. I can't speak for my friendly AI. I want to especially thank Tuvia Frankel for clueing me in to the importance of dealing with this issue right away, and for writing the fauxmercial! Loving him was like…what? You may know all the words to this old favorite song, but do you know what they mean? In today's deep dive, we're unpacking “Red” from Red (Taylor's Version). After our previous episode on Fall where we talked about why this is an autumn-coded song, our hosts spend more time trying to understand the many (many) metaphors (or is it similes? Analogies?) Taylor Swift uses to describe this relationship. We'll get a High School English lesson, references to some Millennial-favorite TV shows, and a chance to explore Red as an analogy for Taylor's transition from country to pop. And then we realize…there's no right answer!   Mentioned in the episode:  “Red,” Red (Taylor's Version)  “Shortcut: How Analogies Reveal Connections, Spark Innovation, and Sell Our Greatest Ideas”, John Pollack Aesop's Fables “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” “august,” folklore “Bridgerton” E2: Deep Dive - Enchanted E6 - Deep Dive - It's Time to Go  “Picture to Burn,” Taylor Swift “The Hills: New Beginnings” “Complicated,” Avril Levigne    *** Episode Highlights:  [00:20] Introducing today's deep dive song, “Red”  [01:42] 1st person, 2nd person…whose experience is this? At the time, Anne's students were using Google Slides, but they were simply filling the slides with text, leading to a lack of engagement. Anne decided to introduce Canva to her students and teach them how to use it effectively to captivate their audience.Anne explains that it took small steps to get her students to remove excessive text from their presentations, resulting in a significant improvement in their engagement levels. By the third semester, she noticed that the only text on the screen was the film title and perhaps a term, allowing the students' presentations to focus on visual storytelling rather than relying on written information. Over the years we've heard LGBTQ people say that they didn't know what life might look like for them as an adult. Many haven't had LGBTQ role models that provide examples of a potential future, and a lot of fear that parents of LGBTQ children experience comes from the unknown as well. We thought it might be helpful for parents to get to know some of the amazing members of the LGBTQ community, just a few at a time, so that they can provide a realistic view of what life could look like for our children. Today, Jen joins guests Marshall Shearer, Craig Watts, and Candice Green in this episode of World of Possibility. Special Guest: Marshall ShearerMarshall is a proud trans man who's been living life to the fullest for the past 8 years since transitioning. When he's not busy being an awesome dad to five adopted kids, aged 14 to 24, or spoiling his adorable 2-year-old grandson, you can find him crushing it at board games, giving his all on the softball field, or just soaking up the sun at the beach. Marshall's a foster care superhero with 11 years under his belt and 10 placements along the way. Life's a journey, and he's loving every moment of it!Special Guest: Craig WattsCraig grew up in a conservative Christian community in Utah, where everyone he knew lived in traditional families. When he realized he was gay at 18, he thought he'd never have kids or have a place in his community. So, after completing a Master's Degree in Chicago, Craig ran away to Asia and spent the next two decades as an out gay man living and working in Japan and China before deciding to have kids via surrogacy. Craig had hoped to find a partner before becoming a parent, but he had strong support from his parents and siblings, and the biological clock was ticking, so he took the solo parent plunge at age 46. A Bangkok-based clinic helped Craig find a Thai egg donor and surrogate mothers for his three kids who are now aged 11 and 9 (twins). Craig and his kids lived for a few years in Beijing, then moved home to his parents' basement in Utah, and now live in the heart of San Francisco. They attend a Chinese immersion school where Craig teaches 7th grade. It's been a tough decade, but Craig loves being a parent even when the kids gang up on him!Special Guest: Candice GreenCandice is a High School English teacher and mother of two. She loves Marvel movies, her book club, and going on adventures with her friends and kids. Links from the show:Utah Foster Care's LGBT Resource Page: utahfostercare.org/lgbt  Join Mama Dragons today www.mamadragons.org In the Den is made possible by generous donors like you.Help us continue to deliver quality content by becoming a donor today at mamadragons.org.Connect with Mama Dragons:WebsiteInstagramFacebookDonate to this podcast

Jerry Lovelady is an American poet, a Texas native living in Beaumont, Texas where he teaches High School English. He is married to his lovely wife of 27 years, Kristi, who is the subject of many of his poems. Jerry has two books out, the first in 2021 titled Other Worlds, in Other Words and Grief and Her Three Sisters published in November, 2022. Both were published by the independent publisher Atmosphere Press. Lovelady draws much of his inspiration from the "Mystic" poets: Walt Whitman, Emily Dickenson, and Robert Frost who got their inspirations from Nature and man interacting in spiritual ways which they recognized as important. Frost, in particular, impressed Lovelady early on with his amazing rhyming ability and the quaint, down to earth characters he wrote about. Lovelady is prone to personify the stars, the rivers and mountains in much of his poetry to good effect. He believes Nature has much to teach us if we would only listen and open our eyes to what is going on around us.   Lovelady has lived in Florida, New Jersey, California, Georgia, and Arizona and is just as at home in a large city urban environment as he is on a river bank in the woods. He and his wife are well travelled enjoying their trips to Europe. They equally enjoy relaxing at their rustic cabin on the Sabine River in deep East Texas which has been a source of inspiration to Lovelady for two decades. Lovelady began writing poetry in 1997, working sporadically until he accumulated enough to publish in 2020. He is currently working on his third book of poems which should be ready to publish by the end of 2023. https://jerryloveladypoetry.com https://instagram.com/loveladyjerry https://facebook.com/lovelady_jerry

Massapequa ,Long Island makes sure its high school students know that mindfulness is important. High School English teacher, Lisa Davi proves in all she does that mindfulness matters. Lisa has developed and implemented a high school English elective course, to help students learn to love themselves and go your own way.  What's up everyone? Welcome to episode two hundred four of Above Ground Podcast. This week we talk mindfulness, Don Miquel Ruiz and The Four Agreements, High School English and how we can learn to connect and stay connected to ourselves.  Lisa's inspired idea sprouted when she started to notice a shift in students levels of anxiety, overwhelm and loneliness. Inspired by Tim O'Brien's, The Things They Carried, Lisa proposed the question to her tenth grade pre -AP class of what do you carry everyday? Then the second day she asked what do you carry mentally and emotionally?  This assignment was issued for three years and Lisa was noticing a difficult trend to ignore, our teens were hurting. It was being exacerbated every year by culture, social media  and our unwillingness to change the way educate our adolescents. In a world that is on hyper speed and it's harder to compete on every level, we as parents have an important role to play. We have to acknowledge and fix our shit. We owe it to our children and the world.  The foundation of Lisa's Mindfulness Matters class is The Four Agreements by Don Miquel Ruiz. The district even goes as far as providing the students who enroll in this class their own copy. In turn, they take it out and spread it to parent, grand-parent, caregiver and society.  Into the Magic Shop written by Dr. James R. Doty,  Rhonda Byrnes book The Secret, which is about the Law of Attraction, and Ruiz's sequel, The Fifth Agreement round out the reading list for her English elective. An elective that not only is making the school district notice. CBS 2 Long Island News recently spotlighted the class on a broadcast and is bringing attention to this young but hopeful and needed program to be picked up District wide.  Lisa Davi is a true change agent exemplifying Gandhi's words of, be the change you wish to see. Above Ground Podcast is grateful to be able to bring you these important InnerViews with mental health agents of change all over the globe. Please support and Buy AGP a Coffee. Career and technical education (CTE) is frequently touted as an effective strategy to encourage high school students to persist to graduation and set themselves on a path to jobs that pay a family-sustaining wage. For English Learners (ELs), who disproportionately come from low-income families and are less likely than their peers to graduate on time, participating in CTE can be especially rewarding—if they have meaningful access to such classes and support to successfully complete them. Federal rules and state oversight play important roles in ensuring ELs are allowed to enroll in CTE, but challenges to serving them are numerous, from student schedules already packed with required classes to faculty unprepared to meet unique learning needs. ELs' meaningful participation in CTE requires a holistic approach to program planning and student recruitment. For example, school counselors—who play a gatekeeping role in determining the courses students can access—can benefit from working closely with EL specialists to understand student and family perspectives. Regular, two-way communication with higher education and industry partners ensures that high school staff understand local opportunities, and that those partners are ready to take advantage of the assets current and former EL students bring with them and to support their continued career growth. This webinar marks the release of a report from MPI's National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy on CTE and ELs that describes federal and state policies that support EL inclusion in CTE, as well as local challenges and opportunities. The conversation highlights a Texas school district program in which collaborative practices between the CTE and multilingual departments are taking place to ensure ELs are appropriately supported.

ELLIE GREENWICH -SONGWRITER HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE- 1991Ellie Greenwich is one of the most successful songwriters of the modern pop music era. She was one of the major influences on the 60's rock and roll, a music that continues alive and well today. Her songs, which have sold in the tens of millions, have earned her 25 gold and platinum records.Born in Brooklyn, her young life was filled with singing and dancing recitals and winning first prize in a local newspaper's poetry contest. At 11, she moved to Levittown, Long Island, and her musical career became serious when she took up the accordion and by 13, was writing songs. Along with two high school friends, she formed her first "girls group," The Jivettes, and the trio performed original songs at hospitals, schools and charity benefits throughout Long Island.About this time, Greenwich's mother arranged a meeting for Ellie with Cadence Records president Archie Bleyer (of Everly Brothers and Chordettes fame). His advice to "keep writing but finish school... the music business will always be there," stuck in the young writer's head and she did just that. She attended Hofstra University, was its Spring Queen and graduated with top honors with a BA degree in English, and a listing in "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities."During her latter years in college, she met Jeff Barry at a family gathering and the two became good friends almost immediately. "He was the first male I could actually harmonize with," she recalls. Eventually, the couple married and went on to become co-writers of some of the most memorable classic rock hits. After graduation in 1962 and following a High School English teaching career which lasted three and one half weeks, she began free-lancing and working out of the offices of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, a pair of hot songwriters in their own right, in Broadway's Brill Building, one of the music business headquarters of that time. She wrote songs with Doc Pomus and Tony Powers and enjoyed her first chart successes with "This Is It," by Jay and the Americans, and "He's Got the Power," by the Exciters. She and Barry formed The Raindrops, who skimmed the top 16 with "What a Guy" and "The Kind of Boy You Can't Forget."Teaming with Phil Spector, the two managed number one hits with "Be My Baby," "Da Doo Ron Ron," "And Then He Kissed Me," "Chapel of Love" and "River Deep, Mountain High." Greenwich and Barry also continued their successes with such number one smashes as "Hanky Panky," and co-written with Shadow Morton, the epic, "Leader of the Pack." During these years, too, Greenwich reigned as one of New York's top demo singers and session vocal arrangers/singers, working with artists ranging from Dusty Springfield and Lesley Gore to Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby Darin and Frank Sinatra. During one of the many demo sessions in which she was involved, Greenwich met and "discovered" Neil Diamond and went on to co-produce such early Diamond hits as "Cherry Cherry" and "Kentucky Woman," doing background vocals as well.During the latter part of the 60's, Greenwich found continued success in collaborations with Bob Crewe, in writing for The Hardy Boys TV series, and in singing on popular commercials for Cheerios

Joined today by runner, journalist and New York Times Best Selling Author, Christopher McDougall. Chris talks about growing up in Philly, moving out to Lancaster and then settling down in Hawaii. Chris tells me how he was recruited for crew during his basketball practice and how he parlayed that into rowing for Harvard. We hear how as a failed High School English teacher, he decided to backpack through Europe and before he knew it he was the Associated Press‘ war correspondent in Angola and the Congo. Chris and I open up about the importance of not holding in your feelings and what he saw in Rwanda that made him come back home to the States. We hear how a writing assignment about a Mexican pop star turned into him being immersed in the Tarahumara Tribe and eventually witnessing "The Greatest Race the World Has Ever Seen". As a first time author, Chris recalls checking the reviews on the book, how he starting selling the books himself and how he got booked on the Jon Stewart Show. Chris talks about his newest books "Born to Run 2: The Ultimate Running Training Guide", what we should expect with this sequel book and why every runner needs to get this book. I deep dive into the aspects of Chris' writing: how it was collaborating on this book with Eric Orton, adding sneaker and scientific talk smack in the middle of Born to Run, and the difficulty of writing about himself as the main character. From texting with Rick Rubin, running with the Amish, and just a great conversation with the voice of running, Christopher McDougall.
