Buc-ee's — the chain of road stops with a beaver mascot and a die-hard fanbase — is looking to expand westward. Its next stop is Palmer Lake, Colorado: a small, rural town known for its lush greenery and outdoor recreation. But some local residents are looking to “heave the beave.” And they have a powerful billionaire backing them: ‘cable cowboy' John Malone. WSJ's Jim Carlton reports on this standoff over development and the future of the American West.    It's always silly when somebody says something true and it creates a controversy.  Patrick Mahomes has belly fat.  He's also changed the way the game is played and is the greatest player of his generation.  Reaction to my buried in the back of the podcast comments Monday went viral after Mahomes' trainer came after me on social media.  He's the first trainer in history to argue that belly fat is a good thing and, like a great democrat politician, the fanatics actually believe him.  It's your option to find it charming and good... it's my job to point out the belly fat will be gone someday when Mahomes gets serious like other athletes in their 30's.     Kansas extended their STAR bond offer to the Royals and Chiefs and immediately Chiefs president Mark Donovan says it will take nearly a year to put something on the ballot for the team to stay in Missouri.  This is insane.    The Royals are rolling but it feels like too little too late.  A Pirates player in KC has an awesome list of no trade teams in his contract as he obviously hates income taxes.  Ron DeSantis has a better plan, a perfect plan, for Elon Musk.    Mayor Q takes a dip in a new pool with a shirt and tie on and I think it's a very cool thing for him to do.  Buc-ee's construction at the Speedway is delayed a couple months and Amazon Prime Day is now bigger than Black Friday.

After Tim's recent experience at Buc-ees, they unpack how leaders who regularly interact with frontline teams gain deeper trust, uncover blind spots, and make smarter decisions. Disney's guest-first culture includes leadership visibility, which they both experienced as Cast Members. On the night of November 8, 1983, David Hendricks returned home from a business trip to find his wife, Susan, and their three young children brutally murdered in their beds. They had been killed with an axe and a butcher knife—both from the family home. Investigators quickly turned their focus to David. There were no signs of forced entry, the burglary attempt seemed staged, and there were no other viable suspects. It was called the “cleanest bloody crime scene”. David's unemotional demeanor, strange midnight business trip, and seemingly rehearsed account raised suspicions, and the coroner's estimate of the time of death—based on the children's stomach contents—suggested the murders occurred before David left for his trip. Prosecutors theorized he was growing restless in his strict religious life and may have killed his family to escape it. Few companies have inspired more fanatical devotion among Texans than the convenience chain Buc-ee's. Described by the New York Times as both a “Disneyland of roadside capitalism” and the “through line of America's second most sprawling state,” its iconic, buck-toothed beaver mascot has been spotted not just on billboards, but on wedding cakes and tattooed arms of its most loyal customers. Founded as a small-town gas station, today it boasts 47 locations across the South known for massive floor spaces brimming with souvenirs, fudge, BBQ stations, cases of jerky, and walls of branded snacks like “beaver nuggets.”  Yet unlike other treasured Lone Star enterprises like Whataburger, Blue Bell, or the grocery chain H-E-B, Buc-ee's ascendance has been a fast, recent phenomenon. They are also far from the first convenience chain to endear themselves to travelers through reliably clean restrooms, kitschy gifts and road food. In fact, one could argue they stand on the shoulders of the Georgia-born Stuckey's, whose nutty treats sparked a mid-century rest stop empire.  Today, both brands find themselves at a crossroads. Buc-ee's is rapidly expanding, while following years of corporate mismanagement and decline, Stuckey's is rebuilding itself one pecan log roll at a time.  In this episode we'll ride shotgun with Gravy producer Evan Stern as he explores how food has shaped these companies' brand identities, how they're grappling with change, and what their stories reveal about the past, present, and future of snacking on the American road. Along the way, we'll step inside a Buc-ee's that sprawls over 65,000 square feet, get to know some devoted customers, and hear from journalist Eric Benson, who argues this chain has come to symbolize 21st-century Texas. We'll also meet Stephanie Stuckey, who, following a career in politics and environmental law, now serves as the chair of Stuckey's. She shares her grandfather's journey from pecan broker to gas station magnate, how she envisions Stuckey's evolving, and why the road trip remains ingrained in the company's DNA. The resulting piece is a profile of two brands that have shaped and continue to make American highways a “corridor of consumption.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In the 1980s, it was pay-at-the-pump technology. But 40 years later, another technological risk has emerged in the form of electric vehicles. But while there's an additional bevy of other external threats to foot traffic like impulse purchase rapid delivery startups…it all comes back to how best can convenience stores draw consumers inside. And I believe the strategic answer is focusing on “controlling your own destiny.” So, what do Buc-ee's, Sheetz, Wawa, and Casey's have in common? They've garnered considerable loyalty nationwide (beyond their regional origins) with exceptional foodservice options. Similarly, many c-store brands (like 7-Eleven and Love's) are accelerating their private label growth…building customer loyalty and repeat visits. The fact is…within the last century, convenience stores have faced countless threats and successfully evolved into one of the most important U.S. sales channels with over 150,000 total locations.
