Oklahoma Round Two: Ringers, Teal, & Late Season Reality

Upduck Podcast

The Upduck crew is back with a full recap of Oklahoma Round Two—our second trip south chasing late-season ducks with RedBeards Waterfowl Outfitters. This year looked a lot different than last: warm temps, stale birds, teal chaos, ringneck action, and the kind of hunts that remind you why nothing in waterfowl is guaranteed. We break down all three hunts—from a ringer-loaded opener to a blink-and-you-miss-it teal bomb and a final morning that perfectly captured the grind of late season. Along the way, we dive into dog work, shot decisions, guided hunt expectations, jump shooting, and why sometimes the best part of a hunting trip isn't the bird count. Add in Buc-ee's culture shock, Oklahoma catfish, gas station debates, and post-season reflection, and you've got an episode that's equal parts hunt recap and reality check. If you're missing the blind, battling duck depression, or planning your next out-of-state trip, you'll enjoy this episode. AAPL President Kyle Reynolds sheds light on the landman compensation crisis that's threatening the industry's future. While attorney salaries jumped 76% since 2000, field landmen still earn the same $400-500 day rates they have for the past 25 years. That puts them below the living wage in most markets. A viral clip from Sandringham has American viewers fixated on an unexpected detail: what appeared to be a Buc-ee's plush toy in the crowd behind Prince William and his children during the Christmas Day church walk. The Texas convenience-store mascot has no UK footprint, making its appearance at a royal moment both baffling and instantly memeable, with speculation over how it ended up so close to the royals. We also revisit claims from Rob Shuter that Prince William objected to King Charles including Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie in the Christmas walk, with sources framing the disagreement as a wider clash over judgement and authority.Meanwhile, Kate is being described as an “eternal influencer” after recognition from British Vogue, as commentators point again to the so-called Kate effect on brands.Plus, renewed scrutiny of royal security after an intruder allegedly breached Kensington Palace grounds twice in the days before Christmas and has now pleaded guilty, with former royal protection officials raising questions about why he was able to return. We wrap with honours list headlines including Idris Elba's knighthood and Cynthia Erivo receiving an MBE, a redesigned British passport now bearing King Charles's coat of arms, and a new Amazon Prime Video documentary on the King's environmental work, narrated by Kate Winslet.Palace Intrigue is your daily royal family podcast, diving deep into the modern-day drama, power struggles, and scandals shaping the future of the monarchy.Hear our new show "Crown and Controversy: Prince Andrew" here.Check out "Palace Intrigue Presents: King WIlliam" here.

RV CONVERSATION OF THE WEEK - The RV Accident That Changed Everything Andy and Joanne Larrimore are longtime RVers who, earlier this year, set out on what was supposed to be their biggest adventure yet. They packed up their Class A, hooked up their toad, and rolled out of southeast Massachusetts bound for Florida. The trip started exactly the way RV dreams are supposed to start, sunshine, family time, and a memorable stop at Disney with loved ones in Orlando. But a couple of weeks in, everything changed. Andy came down with a serious upper respiratory infection. Then word came that Joanne's mom, who was in a nursing home, was not doing well. They made the tough decision to cut the trip short and head back north. Somewhere in South Carolina, the unthinkable happened. Andy blacked out behind the wheel, and their rig crashed. Both Andy and Joanne were med-lifted separately to the hospital. They suffered serious injuries, and the road to recovery has not been easy. Thankfully, they are both doing much better today. And here is the part of their story that really matters, they are not done with the RV lifestyle. The Larrimores have chosen to share what they went through, what they learned, and the lessons that could help every one of us travel safer and smarter. This is a powerful conversation about resilience, preparedness, and why even life-changing setbacks do not have to mean the end of the road. RV NEWS OF THE WEEK Forget Candy Bars—This Iowa Mall Vending Machine Dispenses Starlink So we've heard of getting a can of soda or maybe a Snickers bar from a vending machine, but a Starlink system?? Yet that is exactly what happened in Iowa! A self-serve vending machine quietly appeared at a shopping mall's food court in Des Moines. It is designed to dispense a standard Starlink dish and accessories, including mounts and the Wi-Fi router. Word is that more are coming. No More Reservations: Glacier National Park Rethinks Summer Access This is a big story for fans of Glacier National Park… Reservations will NOT be needed at Glacier for the summer of 2026. Why, because the National Parks Service says the system did not work as planned. The reservation system, started four years ago, was supposed to cut down on long afternoon lines by requiring people to register to enter between 7 am and 4 pm. What happened is mid-day traffic was much better, but the early morning crowds trying to beat the registration time became problematic, causing new issues. So now the popular park is doing away with reservations altogether. Trump on the 2026 Park Pass? Lawsuit Says Not So Fast Okay… we try to steer away from politics but this is a story we couldn't ignore. An environmental group is suing to remove President Donald Trump's picture from the 2026 National Park Service's Annual Pass. The 2026 Annual Pass features a picture of President George Washington and President Trump and the number 250 for the country's 250th birthday. The Center for Biological Diversity's lawsuit claims the design violates a law that requires the America the Beautiful pass to feature a photo taken on public lands that won an annual photo contest. The Secretary of the Interior says the photo winner will be on the pass for foreign visitors, while Trump's picture will be on the one for U.S. residents. Stay tuned.  Only in Gatlinburg: Black Bear Steals the Show at Christmas Parade Did you hear about what happened as crowds gathered to watch the Gatlinburg Fantasy of Lights 50th Annual Christmas Parade last week?  A lone black bear meandered in. The black bear casually cut through the crowds and walked down the parade route for a bit, as stunned onlookers sat along the curb watching in disbelief. Some visitors captured video - after all, this is not something you see every day!  Buc-ee's Goes Big Again: 17 New Mega Stops on the Way The ultimate road-trip stop, Buc-ee's, is planning to open 17 new locations across the country over the next few years. In 2026, the gigantic convenience store and fuel stop plans to open locations in Huber Heights, Ohio, San Marcos, Texas, and Goodyear, Arizona. Eight more stops are planned for 2027, five for 2028, and one for 2031. Get a free, personalized quote at wholesalewarranties.com/rvlifestyle RV QUESTION OF THE WEEK QUESTION: from Despina… In my 2023 Unity Leisure Travel Van the TV power won't turn on and the recliner controls do not work. Is this a fuse or breaker issue? Open to suggestions to fix the problem. RV connected to shore power. ANSWER: This happens a lot with RVs. It's almost always a tripped GFI plug. On the Unity, I believe it's on the side of the passenger pass-through storage area or in the bathroom. Just push in the little recessed switch between the plugs and you'll be good. QUESTION: From Larry: Why are Class B campervans so expensive? The one we want is almost $250,000. I can get a Class A for that, or a luxury fifth wheel and a brand new heavy-duty truck. I don't get it. Campervans are small. ANSWER: You're absolutely right to be scratching your head at those price tags. When you see a campervan that's basically built on a cargo van chassis hitting a quarter million dollars, it feels ridiculous, especially when you could roll into a dealership and drive out with a gorgeous 40-foot Class A motorhome for the same money. Or like you said, snag a top-of-the-line fifth wheel and a fully loaded F-350 and still have cash left over. Here's the deal: you're paying a massive premium for engineering magic in a tiny space. Think about it: those Class B builders are cramming a full bathroom with a real shower, a kitchen with actual counter space, sleeping accommodations, storage, and all your systems (electrical, plumbing, heating, cooling) into what's essentially a walk-in closet on wheels. That level of space efficiency doesn't come cheap. The other factor? Volume. The big RV manufacturers are pumping out hundreds or thousands of Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels every year. They've got economies of scale working for them. Meanwhile, Class B builders are producing these things in much smaller numbers, often with semi-custom features and higher-end components. You're not getting the mass-production discount. Plus, that Mercedes, Ford Transit or RAM ProMaster base chassis aren't exactly cheap to begin with, and then you're adding premium materials because everything has to be lightweight and compact. Those fancy European-style cabinets, that space-saving toilet, that innovative bed system: it all costs more than the standard RV stuff. And let's be honest, there's a lifestyle tax baked in too. Class B campervans became the hot ticket for a certain “van life” demographic who wants to look like they're just driving a cool van while secretly having all the amenities. That "stealth camping" capability and the ability to fit in a regular parking spot? The market will bear a premium price for those benefits. Does it make financial sense?

In this episode, Adam Daigle, Business Editor of The Acadiana Advocate, returns to break down Lafayette and Acadiana's top five business stories of 2025. With years of experience tracking economic trends, major developments, and the people shaping our community, Adam offers an inside look at what's driving growth—and what challenges remain. From the long-awaited arrival of Trader Joe's to manufacturing growth, real estate trends, and the future of North Lafayette, this conversation is packed with insight. A Post-Covid Economy: Stabilizing but Still Shifting Adam notes that Acadiana has mostly returned to pre-pandemic normalcy, but some sectors continue to adjust: Restaurants: Sales are outpacing inflation overall, but performance is uneven. High-traffic corridors like Kaliste Saloom are thriving, while many locally-owned restaurants still struggle with tight margins, rising costs, and increased competition. Retail: Still strong—people are spending, and parish retail sales continue to grow. Manufacturing: One of the region's most promising economic bright spots. Well-paying jobs, steady growth, and diversification beyond oil and gas continue to strengthen the sector. Manufacturing Momentum—Even After Setbacks While Acadiana added thousands of manufacturing jobs since 2020, the closure of SafeSource Direct was a painful blow. The PPE manufacturer, built during the pandemic, couldn't compete with ultra-low-cost Chinese imports. The result: 700 local jobs lost, many held by women and graduates of drug court programs. Even so, Adam emphasizes that manufacturing remains a major growth engine. Companies continue to diversify away from oil and gas, and Louisiana's industrial corridor—from I-49 to Hwy 90—remains active and expanding. Real Estate & Housing Trends Adam continues to follow Lafayette's housing market closely: Higher-end homes that once sat on the market are now moving again. Sales volume is rising month-to-month. Rental demand remains extremely high, driven by population growth and a historic low in first-time homebuyers (just 21% nationally, with the average of a first-time homebuyer being 40 years of age nationally). Lafayette continues to see brisk apartment construction to meet demand. The market is tight—but not dangerously overbuilt. Adam Daigle's Top Five Business Stories of 2025 1. Trader Joe's Is (Finally) Coming to Lafayette The biggest story of the year: Trader Joe's is officially in the works for the corner of Bluebird Drive and Camellia Blvd. in Lafayette. Because the company is notoriously secretive, even the appearance of a permit created excitement. The land deal is expected to be finalized soon, with construction likely leading to an opening in late 2026 or early 2027. Fun fact: Lafayette will become one of only three cities in the U. S. that have both a Buc-ee's and a Trader Joe's. 2. Northgate Mall Sold to Local Investor Jacoby Landry North Lafayette's aging Northgate Mall has new life ahead. Entrepreneur Jacoby Landry purchased the property with a long-term vision for transforming the site—not simply filling it with retail, but creating a mixed-use redevelopment with potential for office, residential, and community uses. Jacoby is rebranding Northgate Mall as “The Hub,” inspired by Lafayette's nickname, Hub City, and the I-10/I-49 cloverleaf, which will be reflected in its new logo. The redevelopment will focus on mixed-use commerce, green spaces, and lighting to ensure safety and create a welcoming atmosphere. Years of deferred maintenance mean slow, steady work ahead, but the project is finally backed by a local owner committed to revitalization. The first major opening recently announced is Xtreme Health Club, a full-service fitness facility taking over the former Planet Fitness space. Owned and operated by Jacoby Landry’s sister, Rachel McCorvey, the facility will feature a nutritionist, weight management services, Botox, IV drips, sauna, hot tub, salt room, cold plunge, a health bar, and two indoor pickleball courts. Pilates and boxing fitness will also be offered, bringing Red's Health Club-like amenities to North Lafayette on a smaller, community-focused scale. It's expected to open in early 2026. 3. Buc-ee's Delayed… Again The massive travel center planned for I-10 is still happening, but Buc-ee's has pushed back construction. The company is re-evaluating store designs nationwide, impacting multiple projects—not just Lafayette's. The new projected opening is 2028. Even with delays, the development will be a major economic catalyst, generating hundreds of jobs and significant sales-tax revenue. 4. SafeSource Direct Closure One of the biggest economic losses of the year was the shutdown of SafeSource Direct's facilities in Broussard and Lafayette Parish. Global PPE competition, especially from China, made U.S. glove manufacturing unsustainable. Key impacts: 700 local jobs lost Loss of a major employer of graduates from local drug court programs Decrease in regional PPE manufacturing capacity 5. The Passing of Red Lerille Lafayette lost an icon with the death of Red Lerille, founder of Red Lerille's Health & Racquet Club and beloved community figure. Adam reflected on: Red's unmatched work ethic His legacy as Mr. America in his youth His lifelong devotion to improving Lafayette The enormous public response to stories about him Red's influence on local fitness, business, and civic life is irreplaceable. Yet, his family follows in his loving footsteps and Red Lerille’s Health Club will remain a bedrock of our local fitness community. Community Leaders to Watch: Mandi Mitchell of LEDA Adam highlights Mandi Mitchell, CEO of the Lafayette Economic Development Authority, as one of the region's most impactful leaders. “She’s got an incredible background working as an Assistant Secretary with the Louisiana Economic Development. It was a great grab to get her back here in Lafayette.” Her accomplishments include: Reviving the long-stalled Buc-ee's project Supporting the Northgate Mall redevelopment and mentoring owner Jacoby Landry to achieve great success Recruiting new business and manufacturing opportunities Expanding LEDA's role into urban planning and talent development Empowering local entrepreneurs through mentorship programs Mandi Mitchell’s philosophy that has inspired Adam Daigle and his favorite quote of the year: “If you want to change Lafayette, you have to build the people here to do it. The cavalry's not coming.” What's Ahead for 2026 Adam anticipates several big developments in the coming year: • Major Youngsville Mega-Development A massive mixed-use expansion planned south of Chemin Metairie—bigger than Sugar Mill Pond. • Continued Manufacturing Expansion Projects like First Solar's facility in New Iberia and partnerships with companies such as Noble Plastics will bring hundreds of new jobs and long-term growth. • New Downtown Hotel An 84-room boutique hotel breaking ground at the former Don's Seafood site—adding much-needed lodging to downtown Lafayette. • Drone Technology Hub Two drone companies, DMR Technologies and Drone Institute, LLC, are moving into the former Reptile Tannery Facility which was originally the L. A. Frey Meat packing plant building at 105 Dorset Avenue, positioning Lafayette as a future leader in drone manufacturing, training, and emergency-response tech. • Proposed Indoor Sports Complex A public–private partnership near the Cajundome and Cajun Field could bring a regional-scale sports facility to Lafayette, boosting tourism and event hosting. Restaurant Closures & Market Saturation Lafayette continues to lose 20–30 restaurants per year—a typical number, but Adam notes rising oversaturation and operating costs. Fast-casual and takeout remain strong, but dine-in restaurants face higher risk and shrinking margins. Even kitchen-ready restaurant spaces are sitting vacant longer than usual. Pinhook Road & Redevelopment Questions Despite frequent headlines about dilapidated hotels and blighted property, Adam does not expect major redevelopment along Pinhook Road in the short term. LCG is focusing instead on stabilizing the city's expanding “empty urban core,” particularly the Evangeline Thruway and Johnson Street corridor near UL Where to Read More from Adam Adam continues to document Acadiana's economic story through: The Acadiana Advocate The Advocate Business Newsletter Regular digital reporting at theadvocate.com You can subscribe to the Acadiana Advocate either digitally and/or print editions here. Phillip finally explains the long-running mystery of why he was banned from the Robertson duck blind 35 years ago and hasn't been invited back since. It's the FIRST Smack-Dab Center of the Holidays episode, a town profile of Mifflinburg!  The holiday episode is about...Mifflinburg? Yes! For a couple reasons, but the biggest one is the Mifflinburg Christkindl Market, the annual recreation of an authentic German Christmas market on Market Street. Crafts and goods (many handmade, many unique), indulgent foods and drinks for the young and adult, music, entertainment, and Hilby the Skinny German Juggle Boy (click on that link for a New York Times profile of Hilby) all in one place, a wonderful festival.  We've also got a wonderful interview with Nikki Keister-Hornig, the proprietor of Gable House Bakery, where we wander surprisingly far afield (Hong Kong, Italy) but then bring things back home with Nikki's insights on cookies: it's hard to bake just three, so baking is so often a communal activity. She'll also tell you her secrets on how to bake great pastries with supermarket ingredients, and the best thing she's ever made at Gable House (BOURBON was involved!).  I'll also tell you about a trip I took to Asheville, NC for the release of Sierra Nevada Celly Drippins, a brewery-only beer made from the "drippins" from the huge hop sacks they use to dry-hop Sierra Nevada Celebration. There's a short interview with Sierra Nevada's Brian Grossman (chief brewer at North Carolina, and son of founder Ken Grossman) about how Celly Drippins is made, and a report on my first visit to Buc-ee's, the famously gargantuan Texas-based "convenience store" chain. Hey, remember the scalloped oysters I told you about last episode? I made them for Thanksgiving, and had the leftovers for breakfast on Friday!  Remember: today is Small Business Saturday, and there's a growing list of central Pennsylvania small shopping suggestions for you at the new website! That's SeenThroughAGlass.com! Once again, huge thanks to my daughter Nora Bryson for building the site, with a merch store, a blog, Corgi pix, and more to come.  What I'm Drinking Today is hyperlocal. Boal City Brewing Cream Ale is a delightfully delicate but flavorful way to savor a beer that won't fill you up; perfect with your big holiday meals.  The Smack Dab In The Centre segment is getting into the cold: where to find the best cup of hot chocolate in State College! I have notes about three American Whiskey Master Class signing events in central PA in December, including one next Sunday that's a fundraiser for one of our favorite local non-profits, the Penns Valley Conservation Association! You can get tickets for that one right here. Remember, a signed copy is a great holiday gift for your whiskey-loving friends that you can now buy at the new website! This week on the HowToBBQRight Podcast, we're STUFFED after our inner office pie contest (00:14)! Up next is our Best Sandwich contest, and we dive into what the ultimate sandwich option might be (07:54). Malcom is still struggling in our Let's Get to Cookin' Community Pick'em League (12:21)... Last week, we headed down to the Royal Oak Invitational, and it was an absolute blast (16:53)! On the way home, we couldn't resist stopping by Buc-ee's for some breakfast (24:27). Now that the weather's finally cooling off, it's officially chili season (29:13). We talk about why the Primo Grill could be your next favorite backyard smoker (37:11), and how y'all have been winning contests with that White Chicken Chili recipe (37:53)! If you're making chili this year, don't skip our BBQ Chili Crackers to go with it (38:48). Chili is loved nationwide, so we explore all the different ways it's made across the country (40:35). Malcom also shares exactly how he builds his perfect bowl of chili (46:14). Brent from the community took Malcom's Touchdown Taters and kicked them up a notch (48:54). Next time we make Lasagna Soup, we're swapping in mozzarella pearls for that perfect cheesy bite (50:24)! We also answer some great BBQ questions — should you dry brine ribs overnight if you're short on time (53:13)? Is there a thermometer that alerts you when temps drop too low (54:52)? Plus, we discuss how to get the best smoke flavor on turkey legs and thighs (57:02). And to wrap it up, we've got a brand-new Asian-style hot sauce that we can't wait to try (59:08)!
