Cheyenne joins Ben this week to talk about a word that gets a lot of bad press, but in reality, it is a necessity in most activities involving progress and self-improvement. After conversing about what games they are playing (and discovering Ben's Hogwarts House), they dive right in to deep end and commence with the festivities. Topics explored: the “Epic Fail” meme, Tom Platz, CrossFit acronyms, the invention of Post-It Notes, John Cleese's speeches and educational videos, corporate culture, points of failure in engineering, stories about successes and failures in the academic settings, the roguelike and roguelite labels, and looping game mechanics. Games discussed this week are as follows—Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Infinity Nikki, Hogwarts Legacy, Uncle Chop's Rocket Shop, Papers Please, Plate Up, Baldur's Gate 3, Hades, Kenshi, Deathloop, Disco Elysium, Indigo Prophecy, Super Meat Boy, and Seaman. Hey everyone. Welcome to another instalment of Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be taking a look at some of the most well known characters who show up in the Harry Potter series, but whose Hogwarts houses are never identified. For anyone who's read or watched the Harry Potter series, the four houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry are common knowledge. Based on the four founding members of the school, Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin, the houses reflect the strengths, qualities, and beliefs of these witches and wizards, with each of the four houses being named after their respective founder. Those sorted into Gryffindor house value bravery and courage. Hufflepuff students believe in loyalty, patience and fair play. Ravenclaw witches and wizards, on the other hand, are committed to intellect and wisdom. And, lastly, Slytherin house welcomes students with immense ambition and cunning. From almost the immediate beginning of the series, fans are led to believe that these four houses play an immensely important role in the future and identity of the witches and wizards who attend school there. Welcome Potterheads to our first Disney Harry Potter mash-up! From Disney Princesses to Villains, we work through a list of characters from Buzzfeed to see if our Hogwarts House sorting matches those of the internet. Vote below as you listen along! In which Hogwarts House do you think these Disney characters belong? Ariel is a Slytherin Look, not all Slytherins are bad despite Ron teaching that to Harry in book one. Ariel is ambitious and driven. She knows what she wants, even if it is impossible. And figures out a way to get legs and meet Eric. Mermaids and humans? Not a thing…until Ariel makes it happen! Hades is a Slytherin Being one of the Big Three on Olympus is just not quite enough for Hades. He may not always have the best help but his ambition and never-say-die (ha) drive is very Slytherin-esq. Maleficent is a Gryffindor Maleficent believes she has been wronged. And to right that wrong she is going to do what she feels is right. AKA curse the kingdom's baby princess…? Hey, we aren't saying we agree. But she is doing what she believes is right. So it's Gryffindor for us. Flynn Rider is a Ravenclaw/Slytherin For us, it depends on where we are in Flynn's story. At the end, one of us sees Flynn as a knowledgeable and witty character who is a realist looking at the facts. The other one sees him throughout the movies as resourceful and driven to get the dream he wants the most. You decide. Mulan is a Hufflepuff Everything she does is for others. She puts her dad's safety ahead of her own and leads with her heart wherever she goes. She may not be what we all think a Hufflepuff is (patient and nice) but her heart is full of kindness for others, through and through. Hans is a Slytherin I mean, he pretends to love Anna and then tries to kill her to get his own kingdom so he can be King. Ambition and drive? Check and check. Belle is a Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff Belle does sacrifice herself for her dad, just like Mulan. And gives Beast a fair chance, despite his beastliness. But she is also fiercely intelligent and loves to learn. You tell us… Governor Ratcliffe is a Slytherin “Mine, Mine, Mine” is the most Slytherin-ish villain song in all of Disney. Enough said. Tiana is a Slytherin This girl knows what she wants and is willing to work two jobs and save every penny to get it. Driven and ambitious are her middle name. “Almost There” is the Disney Princess song for Slytherins! We will send out the second half of polls next month, so keep your Sorting Hats ready to vote! What are the holidays if not the most magical time of the year? After a few months that lacked magic (to say the least), Rhea and Marilyn take the Hogwarts Express from Platform 9-3/4 towards Hogwarts (duh) for a bit of Christmas (and other non-secular holiday) cheer. Along for the scenic trip is their producer Ahmed Ashour, a notable HP-films-over-books advocate and sworn enemy of the dark witch named J.K. Rowling. Together, they share their favorite HP memories, discuss the 4 houses, and hand out free (yes, free!) tips for dealing with family members from different houses over the holidays (especially that one Slytherin uncle). 5 points to you, the listener, for sticking around as we wrap up 2023!
