Josh and Mark bring their reading and discussion of "The Argonautica" to an end, is it a satisfying end? No but it's the journey and nostalgic fanfiction that matter.

Once upon a time, Sarah went to Sweden and met a thriller writer who likes talking about the rules of writing in genre as much as we do. We're so excited that to be able to bring Anders de la Motte's brilliant thoughts about thrillers and mysteries to Fated Mates in this far-reaching conversation on romance's sister genres—thrillers & mysteries. We talk about Anders's path to writing, about the rules of writing thrillers and mysteries, about the covenant mysteries and thrillers have with readers, and about Mystery Reasons™️. We had the best time with this one — you're going to love it.Learn more about Anders's books at his English language publishers, Simon & Schuster and HarpercollinsIf you want to talk more about Genre Carrying the Myth, Jayne Ann Krentz's genius way of thinking about the work of genre fiction, or about mysteries and thrillers, come join our Patreon! For this show-within-a-show, Craig and Andrew learned about the world of Middle-Earth by reading J.R.R. Tolkien's posthumously published legendarium THE SILMARILLION. If you want to hear our current longread project TOKYO DRIFTERS (and a bunch of other stuff besides), visit Patreon.com/overduepod.The Elves are here, and it's time to learn all about them! Because there are a whole bunch of different sub-types of them, mostly sorted by whether and how quickly they decided to heed the summons to come party with the gods on their paradise island. The most important one we meet is Fëanor, who forges the book's MacGuffins and then instantly gets super weird and possessive about them, in a way that ensures lasting misery for all involved. Send us Fan MailThe Trial Lawyers College -- which your host Jonathan Katz attended in 1995, followed to this day during the year with periodic trial preparation gatherings of TLC alums and others (shout out to our repeat co-host, criminal defense lawyer supreme, and my decades-long friend Christopher Flohr for hosting such monthly gatherings for years at his Maryland law office) -- makes clear that the TLC does not "offer training for those lawyers who represent government, corporations or large business interests." A sizeable chunk of Trial Lawyers College attendees are criminal defense and plaintiffs personal injury attorneys. When Jon learned that National College of DUI Defense leader Andrew Mishlove embraces Trial Lawyers College approaches, Jon Katz invited him to speak on this Beat the Prosecution podcast, to include addressing integrating TLC approaches with winning DUI defense. Andrew exemplifies the truism that there are always more essential lessons to learn. When he was already in his fifties and very accomplished as a DUI defense lawyer, Andrew learned about the Trial Lawyers College and immediately embraced its approach of persuading through storytelling and applying psychodram and scene setting approaches. Andrew is right on point in talking about the story catalyst that Alfred Hitchcock named the MacGuffin, and the hero's journey of the story. He wonderfully weaves My Cousin Vinny and Star Wars in articulating that approach. Andrew also discusses using the Moth storytelling approach (see his article on the Moth here) -- which is covered at the TLC's Graduate II program -- giving credit to Nebraska lawyer Maren Chaloupka, who addresses storytelling as involving the story worth telling, running from extraordinary to every day events that can be transformative. Andrew also here discusses his week-long annual program with the NCDD entitled Serious Science: Advanced Course in Blood Drug Analysis & Trial Advocacy, where in addition to focusing on persuading for justice for the defense in court, the participants have an opportunity to experience blood analysis from the viewpoint and approach of blood examining and analyzing scientists, whether their testimony is for the defense or prosecution. This episode is also available on YouTube and Apple Podcasts. This podcast with Fairfax, Virginia criminal / DUI lawyer Jon Katz is playable on all devices at podcast.BeatTheProsecution.com. Frodo the cat serves as the ultimate horror witness in A Quiet Place: Day One (with Lupita Nyong’o) Crypticon Seattle, the great Pacific Northwest horror convention, has once again come and gone, but the memories linger. The panels are what make the convention feel like a class reunion. The panels are produced entirely by volunteer experts from across the region and are the ultimate in fan interaction. This is what it feels like to create a horror community, sharing our ideas and experiences with each other. This year, I decided to record some of the panels I participated in and attended to give you a sense of what happens at these events. This Pets in Horror panel was hosted by Brien Gorham, and I participated in it along with Kathy Fennesy and Todd Johnstson. If you are a long-time reader of our website or a listener of our podcast, you will know that I have a big ol’ soft spot for pets in horror. Whether they are the MacGuffins, the heroes, or the villains of the story, pets provide strong emotional connective tissue within horror constructs. The use of pets also sparks some great debates regarding the narrative use of animals. Because we have such a natural affinity for critters, horror movies tend to exploit those feelings by putting the animals in peril. Fair, or not? We will talk about that in this discussion. Brien was inspired by the success of last year’s remarkable film Good Boy which we have been a huge proponent for. You can use that link to listen to an interview with director Ben Leonberg, who discusses how he coaxed an award-winning performance from his pet dog, Indy. That movie, however, is just the tip of a very big trope iceberg. Thank you to Jason and Jasen for putting me on this panel, as it is something near and dear to me, and to many attending Crypticon. Brien Gorham outlined his panel discussion topics for this panel: “Indy the Dog from Good Boy has become the latest in a line of cinematic pets to steal our hearts, but domestic animals have a long history in horror movies. Whether that be as a witness, antagonist, or, as in the case of Indy, a protagonist. Let’s discuss how our collective best friends have been represented in horror films.” Introductions Opening question: If you could choose one pet from a horror movie to have in your home, who would you choose and why? Some larger questions that can be applied to any category: How do our personal relationships with pets affect how we see them in stories? (Please feel free to include personal stories where appropriate) How does the motivation of a pet differ from human motivation? Altruism? How do we recognize animal performances? (Indy's acting win) What resources are available for those who are sensitive to animal violence? Part 1: Pets as Witnesses Possible Movies: Cat's Eye, Poltergeist, The Hills Have Eyes I and II Let's start with movies where a family pet serves as a witness or bystander to an individual or family crisis. In these cases, what purpose does the inclusion of the pet serve? How much do we hate it when pets are introduced just to be killed off for sympathy? Part 2: Pets as Heroes Possible Movies: Good Boy, Cat's Eye, Phenomena, The Hills Have Eyes Next, let's explore pets that go above and beyond, playing an active role in saving the day. Which movie pets do you most admire? How do certain traits of specific animals play into this heroism? How much do we hate it when animals sacrifice themselves for humans? Part 3: Pets as Antagonists Possible Movies: Cujo, Lake Placid, The Uncanny, Uninvited, Pet Sematary, The Black Cat (any version) What happens when man's best friend turns violent, and our furry friends rebel against us? The most terrifying pets in horror? The most heartbreaking transformations? Closing What beloved pets have we not seen represented in horror movies? PET HORROR RESOURCES You can check out our Favorite Horror Movie Dogs Dead List for our updated list of horror hounds for your reference. Kathy Fennessy is a former president of the Seattle Film Critics Society and runs the Seattle Film Blog. She has a blog post titled “Good Boy and Other House Pets in Horror: Purrs, barks, Growls, and Deadly Attacks.“ I find that Kathy is the unofficial research librarian for Crypticon Seattle and has a deep and thorough knowledge of the genre. For those of you who get triggered by animal harm or death in movies, please visit “Does the Dog Die?“ It’s a great resource for people who need to filter their movies for moments that will trigger anxiety, with the primary trope being that of harm to dogs. It also covers things like harm to children and rape, which are non-starter elements for many people. A Recording of Brien Gohram’s Good Boy: Pets in Horror Panel Panelists:Brien Gorham – HostKathy Fennesy Eric LiTodd Johnston Please note: I was using a compressor microphone on the table, so the audio isn’t as clean as it would be with our dynamic podcasting microphones. Todd Johnston, in particular, is a bit faint, though I did boost the audio when he is speaking. Don’t over-adjust your volume, though, because when the conversation turns back to the rest of the panelists, it picks up. Good evening. Welcome back to Dial P for Podcast, Patrick Ripoll's year-long chronological voyage through the films of Alfred Hitchcock. Every month Patrick will be watching four Hitchcock features and talking about them here, from The Pleasure Garden to Family Plot, all across the year of 2026, examining the life and work of England's most famous cinema pervert. For episode 4 we find Alfred Hitchcock a newly christened international film star, taking the magic formula he discovered in The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) in four very different configurations, with four very different results, as we discuss the ground crumbling from under him at Gaumont Studios. Also: his top three favorite methods of being a hideous creep at parties!Spies and bystanders, codes and MacGuffins, the Scottish Highlands to the Swiss Alps to Picadilly Circus, this episode finds Hitch sharpening the Hitchcockian thriller to a fine point, as well as discarding some truly useless pencil shavings!0:00 - 0:35 - Intro Music0:36 - 1:35:56 - The 39 Steps (1935)1:35:57 - 2:06:51 - Secret Agent (1936)2:06:52 - 2:58:11 - Sabotage (1936)2:58:12 - 3:22:34 - Young & Innocent (1937)3:22:35 - 3:23:46 - Outro Music
In Episode 2 of our Star Wars series, we move beyond rankings and hot takes to explore something deeper: what actually makes Star Wars… Star Wars. From emotional moments that still hit decades later, to the role of the Force, to why some stories resonate and others fall flat, we dig into the storytelling DNA of the galaxy far, far away—and how it extends beyond the films into the Disney Parks. We also ask a bigger question:Is Star Wars at its best when it looks forward… or when it leans into nostalgia? And yes… things get a little unhinged along the way.

What’s a MacGuffin? We don’t know. No one knows. But it has to do with movies and that’s fun to talk about.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Send a textKnights, Nazis, submarines, and a three-headed robo-dragon walk into a Transformers sequel… and somehow the wildest ingredients still feel weightless. We dig into Transformers: The Last Knight to figure out why the VFX slap while the story slips, how the Arthurian hook gets buried under MacGuffins, and where the franchise lost the character charm that made the first film sing. We compare Shia's live-wire energy to Mark Wahlberg's steady center, debate Cogman's C-3PO-adjacent chaos, and explain why Anthony Hopkins turning exposition into mischief nearly steals the movie. From the medieval prologue to a London chase that forgets who's in which car, we track the editing choices that drain tension and the dialogue tics that mistake “joke density” for personality. The TRF heel turn, the Witwiccan lore tangle, and Optimus Prime's mind-controlled pivot to Nemesis Prime get a clear-eyed autopsy. We also spotlight what works: Bumblebee's mid-fight reassembly is kinetic and clever, the robot silhouettes are finally readable, and the sound design keeps even thin scenes feeling huge. When Bumblebee briefly regains his voice, you glimpse the beating heart this franchise can still find—if the script lets it.If you love franchise archaeology, blockbuster craft talk, and a fair share of roast with your reverence, you'll feel at home. We sketch the version that might have landed: fewer MacGuffins, real consequences, a focused treasure trail for Vivian's historian skills, and a talisman that pays off a character arc rather than a single slow-motion block. By the end, we answer the big question: underrated chaos or unwatchable noise?Enjoy the ride, then tell us your pick for the series' last truly good entry.
Ever chased a glowing orb through three dungeons, only to find out it's just... a really fancy paperweight? Congratulations, you've met a MacGuffin! This week, the RPGBOT crew dissects the mysterious art of the object that drives your players forward, whether it's the One Ring, the Orb of Shiny Plot Device, or the legendary Sandwich of Ultimate Power. Grab your notes, your dice, and your vague sense of purpose, because we're going beyond the plot twist. Randall James' Melancon Before you roll for insight, roll on over to Amazon and grab Randall James' novella Melancon—a hauntingly beautiful story that pairs perfectly with a rainy game night and a cup of something strong. Support an indie author, dive into a darkly poetic world, and show Randall some love. Show Notes In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, Tyler, Randall, and Ash dive deep into the narrative tool that keeps players moving: the MacGuffin. Whether it's a cursed relic, a kidnapped noble, or a mysterious prophecy, MacGuffins are storytelling fuel for Dungeon Masters and Game Masters across systems like Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder 2e. The hosts unpack what makes a good MacGuffin (and what makes a lazy one), explore how player agency and motivation interact with narrative devices, and share practical tips for integrating MacGuffins into campaigns without making them feel hollow or forced. Expect examples from movies, famous campaigns, and some spicy opinions on whether The Deck of Many Things is secretly the best—or worst—MacGuffin ever written. Key Takeaways A MacGuffin isn't the story—it's the spark. It gets the party moving, but your players should define what it means. Player motivation matters. Tie your MacGuffin to personal stakes or relationships to avoid "fetch quest fatigue." Use narrative misdirection wisely. A twist should feel earned, not like a reroll on your own plot. Every system benefits from good pacing. Pathfinder 2e, D&D 5e, or your favorite indie TTRPG—MacGuffins can unify a campaign arc when used thoughtfully. Don't overcomplicate it. Sometimes, the shiny rock is just a shiny rock… until the players make it legendary. This has to be it. The low point right? There is nothing remotely interesting about this book aside from the anger that it stirs inside of me like small, tiny star. But that would be impossible because as we know if I had a star inside of me then it would consume me, and also Doc Ock would not be able to contol it with his tentacles. The power of a star in the palm of his hands. What did HE know? Anyway, maybe we can just watch Spider-Man 2 next episode instead. It was a relaxing (yet very hot) trip to the old country to enjoy a little relaxing environment. Shua traveled to Anaheim, California and enjoyed Pixar Fest at Disneyland. They both had great vacations but are happy to be home. Sci-Fi Saturdays This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays we talk about 3 different sci-fi movies that Jay has analyzed. Idiocracy makes some bold (and sometimes accurate) predictions of the future of our country. The Prestige was a bizarre tale of two competing magicians and a Tesla machine. And Children of Men presented a scary dystopia where there are no new babies in the world and how that is really going to screw us up. Educate yourself and check out all of Jay's articles on Sci-Fi Saturdays, only on RetroZap.com. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. There are some new locations from Deadpool 1 and 2 in preparation for the new movie. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU. Enjoy MacGuffins! You've probably heard of a MacGuffin, but do you actually know what it is? MacGuffins themselves have been around about as long as stories, but the term originated in the 1920s and was made popular by the master, Alfred Hitchcock himself. While Hitchcock believed that the MacGuffin isn't important to anyone but the characters in the story, George Lucas believes that it can be a very strong emotional connection to the people enjoying the story. Which MacGuffin philosophy is stronger to you? What's your favorite MacGuffin? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Your mission, if you choose to accept it…” will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. Mark and Tom discuss the 2006 action film Mission: Impossible III. Directed by J.J. Abrams and starring Tom Cruise, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Maggie Q and a mysterious Macguffin, the movie focuses on what happens when a super spy learns that it's impossible to live a normal life. In this episode, they also talk about Italian accents, bridge battles, and the excellence of Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Tom Riddle's Horcruxes serve as important MacGuffins for the last two books of the Harry Potter franchise. Much to do is made about finding and destroying these objects in book 6 and especially book 7. However, a terrifying question exists, were any of them really Horcruxes and how do we know?
We can fix EVERYTHING with a vaccine, even imaginary MacGuffins like methane melting down the planet. Instant hype and tens of $millions for the company selling the "solution". Is box-office disappointment DRIVE-AWAY DOLLS destined for the sort of belated appreciation eventually received by the Coen Brothers' sophomore feature, 1987's RAISING ARIZONA? That's up for debate in our discussion of Ethan Coen's latest comedy collaboration, this time with his wife Tricia Cooke, a crime caper in theory that acts more like a sex romp in practice. Nonetheless, we consider how certain Coen crime signatures — ill-considered schemes executed by duos who are the opposite of pros, one of whom is comedically verbose — play out in both films, as well as how the films' respective MacGuffins function as comedic objects. And in Your Next Picture Show we offer an alternate-universe version of this pairing built around the recent French release THE TASTE OF THINGS. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about RAISING ARIZONA, DRIVE-AWAY DOLLS, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. We are back with another Romance in Action with a mission in praise of fluff. Ghosted matches up Chris Evans and Ana de Armas again in a spy/not a spy action adventure. We don’t recommend it as a stalkering road map for finding love IRL, but it is full of chases, OTT villains, and a plot that takes us across the globe. If you want a fun escape with pretty people in nice clothes chasing MacGuffins, this movie is about as deep as you need it to be. Annette Wierstra with Deborah Stanish.

We're talkin' final reveals in Psycho and The Sixth Sense, Marcellus Wallace's briefcase in Pulp Fiction, the "one ring to rule them all," and many more. We also discuss the careers of such directors as Alfred Hitchcock, M. Night Shyamalan, and David Fincher, and whether or not being known for plot twists and MacGuffins is a good thing.
