Alex Murdaugh takes responsibility for the first time by pleading guilty to 22 federal fraud counts related to his theft from clients. Kouri Richins has written a letter found in her cell by law enforcement titled 'Walk The Dog'. Prosecutors are alleging she was attempting to tamper with witnesses by relaying the story she wanted them to tell to her lawyer. Kouri Richins, in a recorded jail call to her mother, stated that the letter contained excerpts from the story she is writing. The Thouy family responded in a court filing to the allegations made by Michael Oher, vehemently denying the allegations made. Lawsuits aren't slowing down. Leah Remini sued Scientology in a very big way, and they responded in kind, calling her a horrible person who is against the First Amendment. Mr. Beast has been sued over BeastBurger by the company he is suing. The TikTok Psychic defamation lawsuit that I have been following had a big ruling with a stern warning from the federal Judge. The Lizzo lawsuit may have dominated the news cycle, but a lot happened last week. First, this Lizzo employment lawsuit is bananas. The allegations strike at the heart of Lizzos brand and though she responded to the allegations, it wasn't a specific denial of most of them. I would be surprised if this suit doesn't end up in arbitration. Mr. Beast sued Mr. Beast Burger after complaining that the company he was working with for the ghost kitchens was holding him into a contract even though he argued they weren't upholding their obligations. Specifically citing terrible quality control and including too many pictures of undercooked and raw food to prove it. Kohberger turned over his ‘alibi' defense to the prosecution according to the laws in Idaho, and the prosecution filed a motion to compel because what Kohberger's team turned over was not an ‘alibi' defense. At the end of the week, the Defense opposed the motion, indicating that Kohberger was out driving alone, as was his habit. So basically, his alibi is ‘it wasn't me'. Finally, I talked with Mandy Matney about the future of reporting, what drove her coverage of the Murdaugh story, and what is next. Bryan Kohberger's attorneys file their notice of alibi, and it didn't contain much. There is a lot of litigation in the Idaho Defamation case, and I broke down the last court hearing, it seems that the Judge will be granting the Plaintiff's motions against the TikToker's counterclaims. Carlee Russell's lawyer admits that her abduction was a hoax, and she was charged and then arrested later in the week. The Schabusiness trial started with evidence on Monday; the jury reached Guilty Verdicts on all counts on Wednesday afternoon. The NGI Trial took place on Thursday, and the jury found Taylor Schabusiness culpable late in the day Thursday. It was a busy week in court in Wisconsin, and my coverage of the trial is live on my long-form channel.Connect With Me.Get the Members Only ‘I Have Thoughts Podcast https://www.LawNerdsUnite.comJoin the Text Crew https://www.TextEmily.ComLooking for my YouTube videos? https//www.WatchEmily.comWant to connect with Emily More? https://www.Instagram.com/theemilydbaker I share things on Twitter too! https://www.twitter.com/theemilydbaker
This week, I covered the Mallory Beach hearings ahead of the case's scheduled trial and the resulting settlement. There is still a lot of ongoing litigation in the various Murdaugh cases. The 1122 King Road House is now the property of the University of Idaho, and they announced it would be demolished before students return for the Fall 2023 semester. The Goncalves family though their attorney Shannon Grey stated that they didn't want the home demolished until after the trial is complete. The University has agreed on the stay. The court granted a 37-day stay of the speedy trial allowing a bit of extra time for the defense to prepare. In Utah Kouri Richins is not only pending trial on the alleged murder of her husband there are multiple civil lawsuits regarding the settling of Eric Richins estate. The estate is suing Kouri, Kouri is suing the estate and there are now motions regarding the Utah Slayer Statute. Finally, Sarah Silverman is suing OpenAI the company behind ChatGPT over the copyright of her book The Bedwetter.
The prosecution in the Idaho University Murders has been tremendously busy, with discovery, hearings, and a new non-dissemination order. There are a lot of motions continuing in the Bryan Kohberger Prosecution, including Kohberger asking for a stay of the court proceedings while there is a determination on the discovery issues over what will be turned over from the Grand Jury. Kouri Richins has been charged with the murder of her husband and her bail hearing included numerous witnesses who testified about the evidence the prosecutor has to argue that Richins should be held without bail, which she was. Finally, the civil case between Gloria Satterfield's sons and Alex Murdaugh has heated up their attorney's ask for sanctions against Alex Murdaugh's attorneys, Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin. I am interested to see what the court decides and if Alex Murdaughs confession of judgment will stand or be invalidated. Joran Van Der Sloot, the primary suspect in the Natalee Holloway disappearance, has been extradited to the United States from Peru for his 2010 indictment for extortion and wire fraud. He has already been arraigned on his indictment and plead Not Guilty. There are a number of lawsuits related to ChatGPT first their company OpenAI is being sued for the chatbot allegedly defaming someone with a fake lawsuit. Two New York lawyers are pending sanctions for using ChatGPT to do legal research and then citing 6 cases that ChatGPT made up, and then they doubled down. I covered a lot this past week because there is so much happening in both the Idaho University Murders, including Bryan Kohberger getting indicted and a ton of movement in that case because of the indictment and the fight over the gag order. Don't forget to stay in the loop at https://www.LawNerdAlert.com Coach Monica and Navarro College known for being featured in the Netflix show Cheer, have been sued by former cheerleader Madi Lane. The civil lawsuit alleges that the school and coaches allowed and encouraged an environment of silencing victims, and I covered that on last week's Emily Show Podcast. The University of Idaho murder preliminary hearing is still over a month away. Still, the court battle over the non-dissemination gag order has moved back to the lower court and will be back in court this month. Finally, Alex Murdaugh states in court documents that he made up the story that the family's deceased housekeeper Gloria Satterfield fell because of the family dogs. Murdaugh seems to be trying to drag Satterfield's sons and their lawyers into court over monies paid to them by insurance. This court battle isn't going away any time soon. It was a busy week. Let's get into it quickly. First, there are a bunch of updates on the Idaho King Road murders. Defendant Bryan Kohberger has subpoenaed surviving roommate BF for the June Preliminary hearing. However, the subpoena was quashed after a stipulation was filed that BF would sit for an interview with the defense. The Idaho Supreme Court of Idaho threw out the writs regarding the non-dissemination order allowing media outlets to pursue a remedy with the lower court. In the TikTok defamation suit, the court granted the ProPer defendant TikToker's motion to set aside the default, with a warning to follow all deadlines and procedures. The prosecution dropped Alec Baldwin's criminal charges related to the Rust shooting. However, they can refile these charges later if they choose to. First up, we've got the latest on the Rust case. The first AD, Dave Halls, plead no contest to one count of negligent use of a deadly weapon. He'll have to attend firearm safety classes, pay a fine, and testify truthfully if called upon. Next, jurors in the Gwyneth Paltrow case have spoken out, saying they took their responsibilities seriously and didn't let celebrity sway their decision.Cousin Eddie was in court on April 4, 2023, for a bond reconsideration hearing, and while his bond was reinstated, it was made clear that he has health issues that aren't being addressed. He'll be on GPS monitoring and house arrest. In other news, the defamation suit filed by Samantha Markle against Megan Markle was dismissed. The court ruled that Megan Markle didn't publish the statements made in the book "Finding Freedom" and they were dismissed with prejudice. As for the statements made to Opera, the court is allowing the allegations to be amended but seems skeptical about whether they'll ultimately hold up.Finally, Todd and Julie Chrisley and their accountant have appealed their convictions. Todd is arguing for a remand over a failed hearing and an error in allowing in evidence obtained through an illegal search. Julie is arguing that the government didn't prove she participated in tax fraud and that there were errors in sentencing. Their CPA, Tarantino, argues that he was just doing his job and was tainted by being tried alongside the Chrisleys.Videos from the weekTuesday https://youtube.com/live/UjEQbpi31_0 The Emily Show Podcast https://youtu.be/uaAenisP1o0 Thursday https://youtube.com/live/NzFuEgoJwi4 Connect With Me.Get the Members Only ‘I Have Thoughts Podcast https://www.LawNerdsUnite.comJoin the Text Crew https://www.TextEmily.ComLooking for my YouTube videos? https//www.WatchEmily.comWant to connect with Emily More? https://www.Instagram.com/theemilydbaker I share things on Twitter too! https://www.twitter.com/theemilydbaker
The Gwyneth Paltrow Ski Crash Trial has concluded, and the jury found in Paltrow's favor determining that plaintiff Terry Sanderson was 100% at fault for this collision and awarding Paltrow one dollar in damages. In this week's Quick Bits I cover the Paltrow Ski Crash Trial that started on Tuesday and has been ongoing for the rest of the week. The trial is about a collision that occurred while Gwyneth Paltrow was skiing that allegedly caused injuries to another skier named Terry Sanderson. The parties must establish whether Paltrow caused the collision and whether Sanderson suffered damages. The jury has to decide whether Paltrow is liable for Sanderson's injuries and, if so, what damages should be awarded. During opening statements, the plaintiff's attorney argued that Paltrow hit Sanderson from behind and caused him injuries, while the defense attorney argued that Sanderson caused the collision by skiing into Paltrow. The first witnesses included Sanderson's ski buddy and the woman he was dating during the accident. Several of Sanderson's doctors testified that he has post-concussive syndrome that will continue to impact him and that Paltrow caused his injuries. Sanderson's family members also testified that he has changed since the accident. Paltrow herself testified that Sanderson skied between her skis, his body was against her back, and they fell to the side, causing her to fall on him.Coverage Links! In this week's Quick Bits, I cover the new documents in the Idaho College Murders, the writ, and the Tom Girardi Bar Scandal. First, I cover the lawsuit against the My Poops commercial and its alleged copyright infringement of the Black Eyed Peas song, My Humps. Next, the Tom Girardi bar scandal, where the State Bar released two redacted reports detailing Girardi's use of money and power to influence the bar's investigations into his conduct. This included hiring family members of those who worked at the bar and giving a Girardi Keese AMEX to a State Bar employee. Finally, there are a lot of updates in the Idaho case involving Kohlbergers and the non-discrimination order. Recently unsealed search warrants from Pennsylvania showed that items were taken from the White Elantra and Kohlbergers' parents' residence, including electronics, clothing, and a shop vac. A memo from a January 13, 2023 zoom meeting between the prosecutor, defense attorney, a redacted party, and the attorney for the Goncalves family revealed snappy exchanges between the Goncalves family attorney and the court regarding the non-discrimination order. Additionally, a writ was filed on February 6, 2023, with the Idaho Supreme Court seeking to have the non-dissemination order thrown out, arguing that it is not the least restrictive means to protect Kohlbergers' right to a fair trial. Kohlbergers and the prosecution are both opposing the writ, with Kohlbergers arguing that it's necessary to protect his rights to a fair trial.Connect With Me.Get the Members Only ‘I Have Thoughts Podcast https://www.LawNerdsUnite.comJoin the Text Crew https://www.TextEmily.ComLooking for my YouTube videos? https//www.WatchEmily.comWant to connect with Emily More? https://www.Instagram.com/theemilydbaker I share things on Twitter too! https://www.twitter.com/theemilydbaker

The Murdaugh Trial Week 1. On Days 1 and 2, the jury is qualified, and motions are heard, including a motion regarding blood spatter evidence and a hearing on ballistics evidence. The defense argues that the science behind the ballistics evidence is not sound; the court allowed the evidence in. On Day 3, the jury panel is seated, and the court orders certain graphic images and photos to be sealed and not made available to the public. Opening statements are given by the prosecution and defense. The prosecution presents evidence linking the defendant, Alec, to the murders of his wife and child and claims that Alec gave multiple inconsistent statements. The defense argues that the prosecution's theories are not facts and that Alec is a loving father who could not have committed the murders. On Day 4, testimony from first responding officers, a K9 handler, and 911 operators is presented, including unredacted 911 calls that had not been publicly available before.Connect With Me.Get the Members Only ‘I Have Thoughts Podcast https://www.LawNerdsUnite.comJoin the Text Crew https://www.TextEmily.ComLooking for my YouTube videos? https//www.WatchEmily.comWant to connect with Emily More? https://www.Instagram.com/theemilydbaker I share things on Twitter too! https://www.twitter.com/theemilydbaker
