Want to request a song? Tell us your rating? Send us a Text Message right now! Black Eyed Peas – “Shut Up” Interscope; 2003 1.4/10There's a moment—roughly 43 seconds into “Shut Up”—when the listener is already wondering what unspeakable acts they committed in a past life to deserve this. This is not so much a song as it is a group therapy session that accidentally got auto-tuned, given a reggaeton-lite beat, and released to the public as punishment.Let's be clear: Elephunk was never OK Computer, but “Shut Up” makes even the most obnoxious BEP singles feel like nuanced art-pop by comparison. It's a musical lovers' quarrel, except neither party is remotely loveable, and their quarrel is written in bold font by someone who just discovered the “rhyme” setting in Microsoft Word.Fergie and will.i.am exchange the kind of biting lyrical barbs usually reserved for year nine drama class improv exercises. “Shut up, just shut up, shut up,” they declare on loop—giving the phrase a semantic breakdown so thorough it starts to resemble a Gregorian chant written by emotionally immature robots. The production? Imagine a MIDI file got drunk, wandered into an Apple Store, and started slapping demo keyboards. The beat clunks forward like an old washing machine—no groove, no swing, just relentless plodding. It's music to argue over a broken Xbox to.Lyrically, “Shut Up” is relationship therapy by way of a text thread you should've left on read. Lines like “Why do we always gotta fight?” are delivered with all the depth of a motivational poster stapled to a dartboard. To be fair, the song does achieve one thing: it unites people. Not through shared joy, but through a mutual desire for silence. If the title is a request, we're happy to comply. If it's a command, we're still complying. The real tragedy is that it ever started talking in the first place.Best Lyric: “We try to take it slow / But we're still losin' control” — tragically accurate if you're referring to the state of the music industry at the time. Worst Lyric: “Shut up, just shut up, shut up” — a phrase now echoing in the heads of innocent listeners across the globe. File Next To: That awkward couple at the bar you pretend not to hear. RIYL: Watching your friends argue on speakerphone.— Chaz Voxworthy, March 2003DUBBY DUBBY is declaring WAR on big Energy! Use the promo code "1001songs" at checkout for 10% off! Shakira BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Shakira has just wrapped the North American leg of her blockbuster Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour and the headlines have been relentless. After a much-publicized postponement, a canceled festival slot, and a last-minute show that never happened, she finally stormed into Los Angeles' SoFi Stadium last week, playing two historic, sold-out nights. According to the Los Angeles Times, not only did she become the first Latin female artist to headline and sell out SoFi Stadium back to back—drawing some 90,000 fans in total—but she did it while sashaying through the crowd in futuristic shades and a silver jumpsuit, her signature wolf ears appearing all over the audience. The spectacle of the concerts has prompted glowing reviews from industry voices such as Vinyl Me, Please, which notes the entire tour is now the biggest Latin tour of 2025 with over 2.5 million tickets sold between North America and Latin America. The North America run included 22 sold-out shows across major cities like Miami, New York, Toronto, and Houston. Special guest artists included Pitbull, Rauw Alejandro, Black Eyed Peas, and Alejandro Sanz. Black Eyed Peas joined Shakira in Los Angeles to perform "Girl Like Me" live for the first time ever, a moment worth its own viral mention.Shakira's setlists have cleverly intertwined era-defining hits—think "Hips Don't Lie" and "Waka Waka"—with new material from her Grammy-winning 'Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran' album. At SoFi, her heart-wrenching ballad “Última,” announced as the final song she'd write about her breakup with Gerard Pique, became a focal point, performed in a dazzling mermaid gown as described by the LA Times. Social feeds buzzed after each concert. Videos of her “She Wolf” performance at Valley Children's Stadium in Fresno quickly racked up views on YouTube, and her dramatic finale with fireworks for “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” made fans erupt in digital applause. Despite logistical hiccups in Fresno—thousands braving 100-plus degree heat and long lines due to delayed stadium gates—the crowd ultimately forgave the chaos once she took the stage, with fans gushing over her vocals and the show's spectacle, as reported by KFSN ABC30.Business impact is equally massive. PredictHQ reports the upcoming Latin American leg, starting soon with shows in Mexico, is projected to pump over $100 million into the economy, putting Shakira not just at the center of Latin pop but as a top tourism driver of the summer. On Instagram, the official wrap-up of the North American shows was met with celebration and daily media recaps. No major personal controversies or speculative stories have dominated news this week; the focus has remained squarely on Shakira's cultural impact, the record-setting tour, and her enduring stardom. If the fan energy and industry accolades are any sign, Shakira has just delivered her most significant career moment in years, cementing her as the global queen of Latin pop for the foreseeable future.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOta

The crew dives into Toronto's yearly Caribana tradition and the “diaspora wars” that break out when some festivalgoers push back against hearing Afrobeats at an event rooted in West Indian culture. From there, the conversation shifts to Drake's island/Afro-inspired record with Central Cee, Which One, sparking a look at surprising Drake songs that despite massive popularity never hit #1, and the tracks that blocked them. On the heels of will.i.am's controversial take that Black Thought is miles ahead of Jay-Z, the group examines a wild album track sequencing before launching into an unexpected head-to-head: Prime Fergie & her Black Eyed Peas run vs. Gwen Stefani & her No Doubt era. The ongoing 50 Cent vs. DMX debate segues into a bubbling 50 Cent vs. Jay-Z matchup, leading DJXP to present real-life scenarios for and against Hov being ranked above Black Thought. DJXP also praises Metro Boomin's project for capturing a specific moment in Atlanta's “Black Boy White Boy Swag” polo era post-White Tee/Snap and pre-Future/New Atlanta run. The episode wraps with reactions to one of Trick Daddy's wild takes on women 35+, plus other pop culture moments to close things out.

Shakira BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Shakira has commanded global headlines this week, fresh off a string of blockbuster Californian shows as part of her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour. On August 4 and 5, she took over Sofi Stadium, where The Los Angeles Times highlighted her dynamic stagecraft, from pro-boxer walkouts in a silver jumpsuit to a viral moment riding her dancers in a live stationary bike act. One particularly historic moment at Sofi Stadium came when the venue welcomed its ten millionth guest during her concert, a major landmark for the iconic arena. In a move that delighted long-time fans, Shakira performed Men In This Town, a deep cut from her 2009 album, after a viral fan campaign called for its live debut—a testament to her strong connection with her base and social media momentum. The second Los Angeles show also featured a live collaboration with the Black Eyed Peas on Girl Like Me.The tour continued to make waves in Fresno on August 7, with Shakira closing the North American leg in front of more than thirty thousand fans at Valley Children's Stadium. ABC30 reported how fans braved triple-digit heat and long lines before being treated to a spectacular performance, ending in a fireworks finale and rave reactions for her vocals and stage presence. Controversy was minimal, with event delays attributed to the venue rather than Shakira or her team. The positive fan reception and electric demand suggest her pull remains undiminished. Her tour's wider impact is making business headlines in Mexico too, where Travel and Tour World states the concerts are generating a massive one hundred and six million dollar tourism impact—a rare feat for any touring artist. Beyond music, Shakira continues to diversify her brand: On July 31 in Los Angeles, she launched Isima, her new science-based, Latin-rooted haircare line, drawing press and industry attention not only for the products but for her ultra-chic pink lace launch jumpsuit, as covered by CelebMafia. She kept audiences engaged across channels, with social media lighting up around the fan-pushed setlist surprises and her business moves. There are no credible reports of controversies or new legal developments around her. Every recent headline affirms her enduring global star power, versatility in business, and savvy rapport with both fans and the industry as summer 2025 becomes another milestone season in her biography.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOta

Shakira BioSnap a weekly updated Biography. In the past few days, Shakira has been at the center of the global music stage with her ongoing Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour. On August 4, 2025, she electrified Los Angeles with a sold-out show at SoFi Stadium. Billboard documented her performance of Chantaje, while fans and celebrities like Isabela Merced and Amanda Diaz shared their excitement from the venue on social media. One standout moment, captured by BV Concerts on YouTube, was Shakira's first-ever live rendition of her fan-favorite Men In This Town, a song that has never been performed live before. Opening for Shakira that night were the Black Eyed Peas, making it a major event for LA's summer concert calendar.Next, Shakira is set for a highly anticipated show in Fresno at the Valley Children's Stadium—the first big-name concert ever held at this venue. According to FOX26 News and Fresno State Athletics, there's still a push for last-minute ticket sales, with special deals like free admission for the first 250 students who purchase football season passes. Local officials, including Assemblyman David Tangipa, view her appearance as a pivotal test for Fresno's ambitions to attract more A-list artists, acknowledging that breaking into the big-league touring circuit is no easy feat for the city.Meanwhile, Shakira has also stepped out in the beauty business spotlight. Just last week, she launched her debut haircare line, Isima, at a star-studded party at Casita Hollywood. People magazine reports Shakira opened up at the event about her personal struggles with ‘temperamental' hair, joking about her journey from brunette to blonde to red and back again. Isima is exclusive to Ulta and features eight products tailored to different hair needs. The pop star emphasized that the brand is rooted in science, culture, and, importantly, her own experience with hair disasters over the years. On the financial front, Vinyl Me Please highlighted Shakira's blockbuster tour revenue—she has reportedly grossed $130 million as of June, topping Billboard's mid-year rankings and cementing her position as a global force in Latin pop. Her tour is seen not just as a commercial success, but as a cultural movement addressing themes of female empowerment and resilience—reflected in both her music and her business ventures.Social media continues to buzz with fan content from her shows, reactions to her hairstyles, and speculation about future tour dates, especially as she heads to Mexico for a series of concerts that promise to maintain her record-breaking momentum. Songs Matt and Sam once couldn't stand somehow became some of their favorites—a weird musical paradox that deserved its own mix. The Stockholm Syndrome Mix takes you through twelve tracks that initially made them cringe but eventually earned permanent spots in our playlists. What exactly causes this shift from hatred to devotion? As we discovered, it's partly due to relentless exposure—hearing a song 50+ times breaks down your resistance until you're begrudgingly nodding along. The Black Eyed Peas mastered this technique with tracks like "I Got a Feeling" and "Pump It."The journey to appreciation varies wildly from song to song. Sam initially thought The Chainsmokers' "#Selfie" was a parody track, while Matt couldn't understand why anyone would play Counting Crows' "Round Here" at a party—yet both eventually became genuine fans. Justin Bieber's "Sorry" represents another common pattern: rejecting both artist and song before finally admitting defeat and acknowledging genuine talent.Age and life circumstances play crucial roles too. Celine Dion's adult contemporary masterpiece "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" requires a certain maturity to fully appreciate—fittingly, the title itself reflects the journey from rejection to embrace that defines musical Stockholm Syndrome.Which songs have captured your heart despite your initial objections? According to Los40, excitement in the Latin music world surged after Shakira posted a recording studio photo and teased fans with the message, “Get ready for new music!!” While fans speculate whether she is preparing a standalone single, a deluxe version of her 2024 album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, or a new album entirely to coincide with the upcoming 35th anniversary of her debut Magia next year, no official details have been confirmed. She did recently confirm contributing a new song for an upcoming Zootopia soundtrack, ensuring that more Shakira content is on the horizon. On the business front, Wikipedia notes that in July, Shakira pledged to donate proceeds from her July 5 San Antonio concert to local disaster relief, once again demonstrating her ongoing philanthropic efforts. The final North American dates are set for early August at LA's SoFi Stadium, where both dates sold out instantly. Episode 80: Mike Caren. If you're in the music industry, you hear the name Mike Caren all the time. He's one of the most powerful people in music, with a career that's led to billions of streams, multiple GRAMMY wins, and chart-topping, career-defining hits as both an A&R and executive. He's signed and/or helped break artists like Bruno Mars, Charlie Puth, Ed Sheeran, Kehlani, YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Wiz Khalifa, Flo Rida, T.I., Trey Songz, Ava Max, Kevin Gates, and Don Toliver. He started his career at Atlantic Records at just 18 years old, eventually becoming President of Worldwide A&R at Warner Music Group. Today, he is the founder and CEO of APG, which includes Artist Partner Group (label) and Artist Publishing Group (publishing), one of the most successful independent music companies in the world. This is Mike Caren's first-ever long-form, on-camera interview. Mike usually keeps a low profile, so I was honored he agreed to do this. We dive into his full trajectory, how he got where he is today, lessons learned, and his advice for artists, songwriters, and A&Rs trying to build meaningful careers in today's music landscape. Back in the fall of 2009, an unexpected voice from the UK took over American radio when Jay Sean's “Down” (featuring Lil Wayne) knocked the Black Eyed Peas off the top of the charts after their epic run. This week on One Hit Thunder, Andrés joins us to revisit that moment in time—when ringtone sales mattered, Cash Money Records was everywhere, and Jay Sean seemed poised to become a global star. We dig into the rise and stall of his career, the lasting power of a great melody, and whether or not his smooth style should've taken him even further. Along the way, we also reflect on the shifting sounds of pop and hip-hop, the legacy of Lil Wayne's feature run, and why some hits live on while others fade fast. Most importantly, are we down with Jay Sean? You're just gonna have to listen to find out. FINE is a 4-Letter Word

FINE is a 4-Letter Word

Time and again, as you go through nearly 200 episodes of Fine Is a 4-Letter Word, you'll find stories from guests who found themselves disconnected from what's supposed to be a connected world.Your circle of close friends you see all the time - your "besties"? Go back two years and tell me how many of them are the same people.Your avid following on social media who hang on your every post? Delete your account and I bet maybe two of them even try to reach out somewhere else.Sometimes being disconnected is a lonely place to be. Other times, it gives you the advantage of not being indoctrinated into other people's beliefs. It could also mean your tribe is quietly forming behind you as you go through this journey called life - as Margaret Rogers discovered when her own journey became a giant a-ha moment. The daughter of Taiwanese immigrants, her parents' cultural way of showing love was to make sure she had the security that came with providing for her basic needs. She wanted for little materially, but the rest was up to her. Her parents told her two things: "We want you to be happy, healthy, and have a steady job" and "Money's easy to spend and very difficult to make".In school, she was the only Asian girl in class. There weren't the thriving, nuclear Asian communities that exist in almost every city today. In college, taking an engineering class filled almost entirely with white men, her professor interrupted his lecture and singled out the woman, asking her, "do you understand?" for no particular reason at all.Graduating with degrees in both electrical engineering and computer science, Margaret easily got a job during the dot-com boom. But then the bubble burst. She decided she really wanted to do "consulting" with only a vague notion of what that is. So she said "if you're laying people off, pick me" and started her own firm. This was all turning out just fine. Really. But Fine is a 4-Letter Word, as Margaret found out after another company acquired hers and she became an executive there. When it hit her that the acquirer had bought the company's technical skill but abandoned the culture she had built, she felt like she'd let down the team she'd nurtured and assured she'd take good care of.So, who had Margaret's back now? You'll discover that in a moment. You'll hear her story about the power of mentorship that began when she hired her first employee and recognized how that changed her own life forever. You'll also see how everybody from her Taiwanese grandmother to so many she's met along the way have come together behind her like a posse. Like she's Wonder Woman and they're her Avengers.Listen all the way through as it will hit you right at the end.Margaret's hype song is "Let's Get It Started" by The Black Eyed Peas.Resources:Margaret Rogers' website: https://parivedasolutions.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/margaretpengrogers/Invitation from Lori: This episode is sponsored by Zen Rabbit. Smart business leaders know trust is the foundation of every great workplace. And in today's hybrid and fast-moving work culture, trust isn't built in quarterly town halls or the occasional Slack message. It's built through consistent, clear, and HUMAN communication. Companies and leaders TALK about the importance of connection and community. And it's easy to believe your organization is doing a great job of maintaining an awesome corporate culture. Because you've got annual all-hands meeting
