You have a target buck or an elk standing at 25 yards away standing perfectly broadside. Over the years, especially here in Iowa, the turkey population has seen some major fluctuations. Part of that has to do with the amount of habitat that is being removed, but another major issue is predators, mainly raccoons. This turkey season has been one of the toughest season we have seen here in Iowa for a long time! In the hunting world, when you hear the word EHD, it puts a sick feeling in your stomach. EHD or Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease, is a disease that affects whitetail deer that leads to a very excruciating death. EHD can have a massive effect on the populations of your whitetail deer herd with in the summer months leading up to the early fall. As hunters, we always fear hearing about EHD outbreaks in the areas we hunt because of how lethal the disease can be. This past hunting season, we had actually found one of the bucks we were hunting that had shown signs of being infected with the disease. We had called in the Iowa DNR to examine the buck, and sent in samples of the deer to confirm that he was suffering from EHD. After sending in the samples, like other hunters, we had some questions about the disease and how it affects a whitetail deer. Well folks, we can put an officially put a wrap on the 2024 Iowa whitetail season. The early split of the 2024 Iowa deer season for bow hunting came to an end last Friday. It is safe to say that this season left a major impact on the Raised Hunting crew. After nearly a year since the Ohio giant was poached, Cj Alexander has now pleaded guilty to 14 criminal charges. For a lot of you guys out there, the weekends are the best time in the fall. That means it's time to get out in the woods because it may be your only time to hunt if you can't take time off. After a week full of work, Saturday and Sunday is your time to go chase after those big bucks. However, for the longest time, certain states only gave you one day to hunt, making it illegal to hunt on Sundays. This can make it incredibly tough on your typical 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. weekly workers to get any chance of getting on a target buck. Almost all states that have had that law in place, have now put it to rest. However two, more states still have this "Blue Law" in place. The excitement of getting a new property to hunt whitetails is a tough feeling to beat. Whether you purchase a new piece of ground to own, pay for a lease, or even just get permission on a piece of ground, the mystery of what you will see takes hold. From the first day of scouting it, you begin to look for signs of bucks in the area, rubs, scrapes, even sheds. The Holder family has been involved in the hunting and outdoor industry for many years. The Raised Hunting crew has officially gone on their first hunt! The gang set out to Wyoming to fill five antelope tags to open up the hunting season. For some hunters, the thrill of chasing a buck they have had years of history with is the pinnacle of their hunting season. They watch this buck grow year after year, with the hopes of one day being able to get an arrow in him and see him on the wall. He may throw some crazy junk and be a giant, he may be the toughest deer on the farm to hunt, or he may just even be their biggest buck to date. Whitetails are truly amazing animals when it comes to their antlers. They can have so much character that truly make them stand out on trail camera photos, but for some deer, telling them apart year after year can be a challenge. Deer season is on the rise! For some of you guys out there, you are lucky and get to start chasing bucks when September rolls around. If you are like us here in Iowa, then you are having to wait till October. Even with deer season being so close, there are still some last minute preparation steps that can be done. Deer management has been a topic of conversation in the hunting community for a long time. For some it may be more feasible than others. You may have ground that is connected over a certain amount of acres that may produce great bucks. You have tried to manage the ground by adding food plots, feeding your deer, and passing bucks to let them get to maturity. The real question though is, is deer management worth it? On this episode of the Raised Hunting Podcast we look to answer that question. We break down some of the pros and cons of deer management, look to find a difference between deer management and land management, and also look at how managing deer can affect hunting for an individual as a whole and if it takes away from the hunt itself.

When it comes to hunting a specific buck, a lot of factors have to be taken into consideration. You are trying to scout him in the summer, you are setting up scrapes to try and put him in an exact location, you are trying to replay your past encounters with him, and you are going over your trail cam history with that buck. For summer hunters, there can always be a target buck that slips through the cracks, even though you have trail camera photos in numerous spots on your property. There is one issue with those photos, they are not in day light hours. On this episode of the Raised Hunting Podcast, we got a topic request from a listener asking how to pin down a target buck that is "nocturnal". We take our experiences that we have had past target bucks that have been "nocturnal" and tactics we used to pin them down!

When it comes to hunting big game, years of experience can play into your favor. For deer hunting, having history with a specific buck and knowing his patterns can be the lead reason for harvesting him. Knowing your terrain and where to hang a stand, scouting for scrapes, and putting in a rub post can all be major contributing factors as well. However there is always one factor of hunting that has to be considered. That factor is the animal themselves and whether or not they will show up. The question to then be asked is, is hunting all luck or is it strategy? This has been one of the largest debates in the hunting world, particularly in bow hunting. It's an ethical debate that can be the deciding factor in a successful harvest. The debate at hand is: what constitutes an effective or ethical shot distance with archery equipment? Many western bow hunters argue that long-distance shots are necessary in the vast landscapes of the West. But is that truly the case? Some hunters push the limits of their effective range, driven by the fear of missing a rare opportunity to take down their target buck. But is this practice genuinely ethical? In this episode, we break down our opinions on what we define as an "effective range" for hunters. We share our experiences with hunting big game in both the Midwest and out West, and discuss what we believe is an unethical distance for taking a shot at big game with a bow. Summer time is finally here and we all know what that brings, velvet bucks! If you are like us, then the chances are you will be driving down the gravel roads on summer nights looking for velvet slobs. For a lot of deer hunters, this is the begging of the summer scouting routine and a way to get an inventory of your deer. The real question is, does summer scouting really pay off? It has long been a topic of heated debate in the whitetail hunting community. Hunters have argued for years about the existence of a mysterious area known as "no man's land." This elusive spot for some, is nestled between the top of a deer's back and the top of the vertebral column, is said to contain no vital organs, which would be the back strap. Some hunters believe in "no man's land" sits below the vertebral column, just above the shoulder in the middle of the body. The argument for many hunters, how can you have a a shot go below a deers spine and not clip any vitals. In this episode, we dive into the myth of "no man's land," spurred by a listener's intriguing story. The listener recounted shooting a buck with a muzzleloader and discovering an arrow lodged just beneath the spine, evidence of a previous hunter's attempt. This prompted the age-old question: does "no man's land" truly exist? We sit down and debate this controversial topic with experiences and tests of our own that may shed light on the location of "no man's land".

I think it is safe to say that if you are a hunter, you love seeing big bucks on trail cameras! Whether they are chasing after a hot doe, hitting a scrape you set, or coming out of the shadows at night, the photos and videos from trail cameras can get you excited at any point in the day. With the dawn of cell cams, hunters can get all that information in real time, especially on public ground. The real question is, how would that effect hunting if trail cameras were banned? Today we look to answer that questions with a discussion about a few of the new laws that are looking to be passed in Iowa. One of those laws being, hunters would only be allowed to leave tree stands on public ground over night. So that means no blinds and no trail cameras! We break down our opinions on the laws and how that could effect not only public land hunting but private pieces if you were not allowed to set cameras out. We would be diving back to the 1970s!
