Chasing Giants Podcast Episode #294 — October 12, 2025 Hunting season is officially here, and Don Higgins and Terry Peer sit down to talk about early October hunts, cold fronts, and how the season is starting to shape up across Illinois and Kentucky. Don recaps close encounters with “Turning Point” and the start of youth season with his grandson, while Terry shares insights from Kentucky's EHD challenges and food plot management. This episode takes a deep turn when Don reflects on how his generation grew up hunting without technology—then learned to embrace trail cameras, digital scouting, and modern archery gear. He explains why his generation may have been the “sweet spot” in whitetail history, bridging the gap between true woodsmanship and modern innovation. Later, the guys answer listener questions about: The balance between turning a passion into a business How to level up harvest goals year after year Miscanthus as a snow and sound barrier Logging impact on mature bucks returning Managing leftover seed and drill calibration Line breeding and deer genetics in the wild Terry and Don also celebrate a few close friends' recent harvests, including big bucks taken by Aaron Gaines and Derek Burkholder, and share heartfelt prayers for Duane Hopkins' family and the late Jason Beachy. The episode closes with a special Sunday Night Prayer led by Brent Henderson, as he recovers from open-heart surgery — a reminder that God's presence belongs in every part of our lives, including the deer woods. We sat down with Before the Echo's Josh Teulker to talk about how priorities shift in hunting, and life, as we get older. From a guy who's got 20 mounts collecting dust, Josh shares how chasing inches slowly gave way to chasing memories. We get into what happens in that ten-second window before the shot, why ego and antlers are often confused for value, and how hunting with friends (or your kids) changes everything. It's equal parts campfire talk and reality check, with plenty of laughs about crow calls, EHD, and how no one ever talked trash at the old deer check stations. In this episode of the Nine Finger Chronicles podcast, host Dan speaks with Kip Adams from the National Deer Association about the importance of deer management, hunting regulations, and the cultural influences that shape hunting seasons. They discuss the role of antlerless deer in population control, the impact of diseases like EHD on deer populations, and the future of deer hunting regulations. Kip shares insights from his extensive experience in wildlife biology and emphasizes the need for hunters to understand the balance between deer populations and habitat capacity. Takeaways Kip Adams has been with the National Deer Association for 23 years. Hunting seasons were established to protect deer populations from overhunting. Antlerless deer play a crucial role in managing deer populations. The number of deer hunters significantly impacts deer harvest numbers. Many states are currently encouraging hunters to harvest more antlerless deer. Cultural factors heavily influence the timing of hunting seasons. State agencies manage deer populations at the zone level, not property level. Disease outbreaks can lead to rapid adjustments in hunting regulations. Public land availability affects deer management strategies. Hunters should engage with their state agencies to understand regulations. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Southeast Ohio's deer population is experiencing a serious epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) outbreak, forcing wildlife managers to consider adjusting hunting regulations before the state's rifle season opens. EHD is a virus transmitted by biting flies such as no-see-ums. Deer killed by the disease are typically found near water after experiencing high fever and dehydration. In the hunting world, when you hear the word EHD, it puts a sick feeling in your stomach. EHD or Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease, is a disease that affects whitetail deer that leads to a very excruciating death. EHD can have a massive effect on the populations of your whitetail deer herd with in the summer months leading up to the early fall. As hunters, we always fear hearing about EHD outbreaks in the areas we hunt because of how lethal the disease can be. This past hunting season, we had actually found one of the bucks we were hunting that had shown signs of being infected with the disease. We had called in the Iowa DNR to examine the buck, and sent in samples of the deer to confirm that he was suffering from EHD. After sending in the samples, like other hunters, we had some questions about the disease and how it affects a whitetail deer. On this episode of the Raised Hunting Podcast we sit down with Andy Keller, a Wildlife Biologist and Depredation Specialist with the Iowa DNR and Rachel Ruden, a State Wildlife Veterinarian, to not only answer questions about EHD but whitetail deer biology as a whole.
