Generations of Hunt podcast, we kick off a new sub-series with a special guest, Matt Michalek, affectionately known as Matt.com. Matt is a tech-savvy hunter from Michigan who brings a wealth of knowledge to our discussion, especially when it comes to data and industry trends. We dive into several hot topics, starting with the recent developments in Michigan's deer management and regulations. Matt sheds light on the new Deer Management Council and the upcoming recommendations that could impact the 2024 hunting season. We also discuss the controversial solar farm projects and their implications for local wildlife. One of the key points we explore is the impact of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) and Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) on the deer population. Matt provides insights into the data, revealing that while EHD had a significant impact, it wasn't as devastating as some feared. We also touch on the ongoing debate about baiting and its legality, with Matt sharing his personal experiences and observations. We delve into the statistics of deer harvests, particularly during the muzzleloader season, and the surprising trend of hunters using their combo tags for antlerless deer. This leads to a broader discussion about the need for better population management and the role hunters play in conservation. The episode also covers the proposed changes in hunting license prices, including the controversial increase for senior hunters and the adjustments for non-resident tags. We debate the potential impact of these changes on hunter participation and conservation efforts. Throughout the episode, we emphasize the importance of understanding and adapting to new regulations, as well as the need for hunters to take an active role in managing the deer population. Matt's data-driven approach provides a fresh perspective on these issues, making this episode a must-listen for anyone interested in the future of hunting in Michigan. We draw compelling parallels between managing real estate and financial assets, emphasizing the potential to unlock greater returns through savvy management. The episode culminates in an exploration of the buoyant Angus and Red Angus bull sales, celebrating the resilience of ranchers and the ongoing surge in cattle popularity. In the hunting world, when you hear the word EHD, it puts a sick feeling in your stomach. EHD or Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease, is a disease that affects whitetail deer that leads to a very excruciating death. EHD can have a massive effect on the populations of your whitetail deer herd with in the summer months leading up to the early fall. As hunters, we always fear hearing about EHD outbreaks in the areas we hunt because of how lethal the disease can be. This past hunting season, we had actually found one of the bucks we were hunting that had shown signs of being infected with the disease. We had called in the Iowa DNR to examine the buck, and sent in samples of the deer to confirm that he was suffering from EHD. After sending in the samples, like other hunters, we had some questions about the disease and how it affects a whitetail deer. On this episode of the Raised Hunting Podcast we sit down with Andy Keller, a Wildlife Biologist and Depredation Specialist with the Iowa DNR and Rachel Ruden, a State Wildlife Veterinarian, to not only answer questions about EHD but whitetail deer biology as a whole. We kicked things off discussing the temptations of Black Friday sales, especially when it comes to upgrading hunting gear. Matt shared his recent gear changes, including his switch to the Maverick saddle and the Ranger 22 pack, which have significantly improved his hunting experience. We then dove into Matt's hunting season, which started off slow in October due to concerns about CWD and EHD affecting the deer population. Matt spent the early part of the season exploring public lands and attending the Bowhunter Chronicle camp, where he finally started seeing some deer activity. By late October, he began getting promising pictures of bucks on his family's property, which reignited his hunting fervor. Matt recounted the thrilling hunt on November 2nd, where he successfully shot a massive buck after a brief but intense encounter. He detailed the meticulous process of tracking and recovering the deer, which ended with a short and successful track job. The buck, a mainframe eight with a kicker, turned out to be his biggest to date, and Matt shared his excitement about getting it mounted. We also touched on the broader aspects of hunting, including the challenges of finding the perfect backpack and the importance of having the right gear. Matt and I discussed the potential changes in hunting regulations, such as the idea of a one-buck rule or an earn-a-buck system, and reminisced about the nostalgia of traditional muzzleloader seasons. We then get into deer hunting, hearing about both Daves and Josh's recent adventures. We talk about specifics of broad head performance, the what's and whys of terminal performance in actual field use, and some more testing that Dave wishes to do to find out in the future. We hear from Dave about Razor Broadheads new offerings, 125gr up to 300 grain broadheads and a new color option (the ever fashionable black) We also get into discussing the EHD issue, how it has effected the herds in different areas, including local deer farms, and how one deer farm owner has found that he can tell (according to him) which deer are infected by viewing them through thermal. We discuss as well the mindset of hunters and how it is ever so slowly changing in regards to balancing the herds in areas in terms of the buck to doe ratio. Segment 3, September 28th, 2024 David Gaskins always brings great information on the big game hunts from the west.  His nickname, First Day Dave, came from prior seasons where he & clients have gotten the deer that they wanted on the "first day" with 7-Jay Outfitters in Sundance, Wyoming. Over the years Gaskin has given us pointers.  An emergency situation was added to the list Get physically prepared before a hunt.  Walk and improve your aerobic exercises before heading out west were altitude and exertion are a part of the hunt Wear layers.  This year the early part of the season was hot.  However, Gaskins let us know that there were also 6" of snow a few ridgelines over.  Layers enable you to prepare for what the situation brings. IMPORTANT:  Listen to what your body tells you.  Gaskins hadn't felt well and ended up having heart attack, four stints in surgery, & back to the hunt. The sponsor of the Carolina Outdoors, Jesse Brown's, has several client mounts from western trips across the wall in the brick & mortar store. End of September is archery season in Wyoming, followed by rifle in the early days of October.  These seasons include white tail, mule deer, and elk. Things You'll Learn by Listening: Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) is a viral disease spread by flies, midges, and no-see-ums.  It is common in late summer/early fall & ends once a frost occurs.  It can be fatal to the animal in some cases. The Carolina Outdoors is powered by local outdoor outfitter in Charlotte.  Home of great like Tundra 45 YETI, Turtlebox Speakers, & a pair of Duckhead pants from the Charlotte fly shop & hiking store, Jesse Brown's.

Summary In this episode, Terry and Don discuss their recent trail camera findings and when to plant fall plots. They also touch on their thoughts about recent political events. Don shares his experience speaking at an event in Wisconsin and talks about the abundance of fawns he's seen on his trail cameras. They emphasize the importance of timing when planting fall plots and recommend backdating from the expected first frost. They also address a listener's question about dealing with reed canary grass in deer habitat. In this conversation, Don and Terry discuss topics related to deer hunting and land management. They cover subjects such as converting reeds canary grass sites, the effectiveness of mineral blocks, the challenges of getting products into major retail stores, the impact of EHD on deer populations, and their personal hunting and life goals. Don shares his goals of shooting a 180-inch buck on public land and two more bucks over 200 inches, while Terry emphasizes the importance of using his new business as a ministry and leaving a legacy for his children. They also address the misconception that Don only hunts big bucks on his special property. Keywords trail cameras, fall plots, planting, timing, reed canary grass, deer habitat, deer hunting, land management, reeds canary grass, mineral blocks, EHD, retail stores, hunting goals, life goals Takeaways Timing is crucial when planting fall plots, and it's important to backdate from the expected first frost. Planting fall plots too early can result in the plants becoming too mature and losing their palatability. Reed canary grass is a challenging grass to deal with in deer habitat, but burning it off and planting potted trees can help establish better vegetation. Spraying around the trees to keep the reed canary grass at bay is necessary for the trees to thrive. Observing the abundance of fawns on trail cameras can indicate a successful fawning season. Glyphosate and clethodim can be used to convert reeds canary grass sites into better quality deer cover. Mineral blocks like Trophy Rock may attract deer, but they do not provide the same nutritional benefits as products like Maximizer. Getting products into major retail stores like Amazon can be challenging due to the demand for high profit margins. The recovery of deer populations after an EHD outbreak can take several years, especially if hunting pressure remains high. Don's hunting goals include shooting a 180-inch buck on public land and two more bucks over 200 inches. Terry's life goals involve using his new business as a ministry and leaving a legacy for his children.

Kaleb is one of those people who lives outdoors. From his land management business and hunting whiteails to putting miles in shed hunting and scouting, Kaleb logs more hours outside than the vast majority of people I know. Kaleb's connection to the land has helped him become an expert whitetail hunter and the buck he killed in the 2023 archery season serves as the best evidence for this. Tune in as we talk about gaining hunting permission, EHD, locating target bucks, and hunting small pieces of habitat.    Video of Kaleb's 2023 Giant Buck Harvest   Follow Kaleb: @kaleb.greiner Check out the First Gen Hunter Website Follow First Gen Hunter Instagram: @first.gen.hunter GoWild: @Kent Boucher Facebook: @first.gen.hunter Follow The Hunt Fish Life: @hntfsh_life Follow Alex: @east2westhunts_alex (also on GoWild) Follow East2West Hunts: @east2westhunts Follow Caleb: @calebleedrake (also on GoWild)   Support First Gen Hunter by shopping at the following partners: Spartan Forge East2West Hunts Use promo code: firstgen10 = 10% off any purchase Old Barn Taxidermy Tell Them The First Gen Hunter Podcast Sent You! It was a strange year of deer hunting here in the glorious whitetail state of Iowa. EHD outbreaks all over the place, extreme drought, and very warm temperatures well into the rut. All of these things left me with a lot of questions and Jace is here to help answer them.   Check out the First Gen Hunter Website Follow First Gen Hunter Instagram: @first.gen.hunter GoWild: @Kent Boucher Facebook: @first.gen.hunter Follow The Hunt Fish Life: @hntfsh_life Follow Alex: @east2westhunts_alex (also on GoWild) Follow East2West Hunts: @east2westhunts Follow Caleb: @calebleedrake (also on GoWild)   Support First Gen Hunter by shopping at the following partners: Spartan Forge East2West Hunts Use promo code: firstgen10 = 10% off any purchase Old Barn Taxidermy Tell Them The First Gen Hunter Podcast Sent You!
