Tony Dispasquale was excited to feature We Run Long and even more thrilled it turned into what it did! I love hearing about all the Trail Running Film Festival selections from filmmakers like Tony. They all seem most excited about the fact the stories they tell are being shared and the groups featured get the recognition they deserve. The inaugural Camp We Run Long brought together BIPOC trail runners from all over the country for three days of workshops, community and the West Line Winder trail races. Founded in 2021, WRL is a community of Black, Indigenous and People of Color runners seeking to expand their presence in a sport that they don't often see themselves in. WRL works to honor Indigenous lands and amplify diversity at races by partnering with race directors and running brands each year. “Recovery is a huge part of my life today. Without that, I would be completely fucked, for the lack of better words. Running is just an extension of my recovery. It keeps me mentally sane. It keeps me physically healthy. It keeps me goal-oriented and motivated. It's just another one of those tools that I use to stay healthy, stay fit, be a better person, and live a good life.”Lee Murphy may use running as a tool like many others do, but he may push it a little further than the average person. Lee is the Canadian Backyard Ultra champion after running an incredible 456 km (68 yards) at the event in October. He's driven and able to push himself to great lengths, but at the root of it is simply a desire to live healthy and move his body. Staying healthy and staying social is also why he loves running, as running is often where he finds time to socialize outside of a busy work and family schedule. Through all of that, he just wants to see what his body can do in this crazy sport. We're on the journey to 2000 subscribers! "We're definitely trying to remove barriers to get more people to the start line. At the essence, that's it. Whatever those barriers happen to be, we're doing our best to try to remove those." - Matt GeofroyCrossing Lines is an initiative focused on increasing representation and breaking down barriers for people of colour in the ultra-trail running community. Two of the co-founders, Matt Geofroy and Kortnee Borden, joined us to chat about the group and how they were inspired. They spoke about how much Parkdale Roadrunners meant to them and wanted to bring that inclusivity and energy to trail and ultra running. Crossing Lines is looking to get more people of colour to start lines by addressing knowledge gaps, logistical challenges, and financial obstacles that might deter potential runners. The group collaborates with race directors to advocate for better diversity practices. They also organized a group of 30 athletes at Run Woodstock who competed in various distances. They had a chance to really absorb the whole experience on the Sunday morning after everyone had run when they organized a group brunch."Seeing everybody there on Sunday morning after the race, just so happy and trading stories. It was amazing. We had people from New York, New Orleans, BC, Toronto, and Barcelona, all connected. “I really enjoy the act of creating. I mean, running, I love running. I like the physical exertion part of it, but then I really value the creation that I can do with writing. So I find that's just a really helpful way to process the race for me and then to be able to share something of my experience with others.”Jade Belzberg has been journalling since she was 5 years old so when it comes to putting her thoughts onto paper (or the screen), she's a seasoned veteran. She's also a seasoned champion when it comes to trail running, as her resume includes a bunch of very impressive finishes. Two silver medals at the recent Canadian Mountain Running Championships are part of that impressive resume, and Jade mentioned that moving back to Canada and learning who the strong competition is here has been a bit of an adjustment. She's made that adjustment and been able to stay within herself. Keeping calm and level-headed is how she competes.“I'm super excited. I'm super motivated, but I don't feel like I get a lot of… I'm not someone who gets like a runner's high after, and I'm all stoked after the run. It just feels like another part of my day, which I really value. But I feel pretty level throughout the day. Because it was so new when I was first starting out, there were more endorphins attached to it. That's pretty rare these days. And even going into races, I'm a really... I'm quite calm compared to my competitors. And that's just how I like it. I think I thrive better with that.”Jade was a ton of fun to chat with. She's just getting through a move and her and her partner have twenty animals they take care of as well! To say she has been busy while competing is an understatement and I'm grateful she was able to take some time and chat. North Korea's policy-making is an ambiguous and shady domain. Little information on the domestic reality of the country filters to the outside world, but the impacts of Pyongyang's foreign policy on regional - and global - security need to be uncovered. In early 2024, North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un, announced that the objective of “reunification” with South Korea is no longer considered possible. More than 70 years after the end of the Korean war in 1953, which formally divided the two states, a significant shift in the North's policies towards the South could have a wider meaning for the region. In this episode, Samuel Pearson and Siddesh Shimpukade join Arnold Koch to provide us with a deeper understanding of the hidden nuances of the Korean peninsula's security dynamics, with an eye to the potential threats of tomorrow.

Born To Watch - A Movie Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 9, 2024 103:13

When "Basic Instinct" first graced cinema screens in 1992, it didn't just arrive; it detonated with the force of a cultural and cinematic bombshell. Directed by Paul Verhoeven and penned by Joe Eszterhas, this neo-noir thriller became a topic of fervent discussion, controversy, and analysis. Damo's pick for the podcast, undoubtedly, underscores not just the film's enduring impact but also its provocative standing in the annals of movie history. So, let's dive into the icy waters of "Basic Instinct" and explore what makes it such a compelling, if contentious, masterpiece. The Plot: A Labyrinth of Desire and DeceptionAt its core, "Basic Instinct" is a detective story, but labelling it as such feels reductive. The narrative follows San Francisco police detective Nick Curran (played by Michael Douglas), who investigates the brutal murder of a rock star. The prime suspect? Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone), a brilliant, enigmatic novelist whose fictional murders eerily resemble real-life killings. What unfolds is a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, but who's the cat and who's the mouse shifts with the narrative's serpentine twists and turns.Cinematography: Crafting the Neo-Noir AestheticVerhoeven's direction and Jan de Bont's cinematography paint "Basic Instinct" in the stark contrasts and shadows of classic film noir, yet with a distinctly modern flair that's both sleek and raw. The film's visual style is not just a backdrop but a character in its own right. It amplifies the story's erotic tension and the psychological depth of its characters, using the moody landscapes of San Francisco and a chilling score by Jerry Goldsmith to deepen the atmosphere of suspense. The Controversy: Pushing Boundaries or Crossing Lines? No discussion of "Basic Instinct" can skirt around the controversy it ignited upon release. Its graphic violence and explicit sexuality, particularly the infamous interrogation scene, sparked debates on misogyny, homophobia, and the exploitation of women in cinema. The film was both condemned and celebrated for its unapologetic content, becoming a lightning rod for discussions about censorship, artistic freedom, and the portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters in media. Despite the polarized reactions, it's this very controversy that cemented the film's place in pop culture and academic discourse.Character Development: An Intricate DanceThe chess match between Nick and Catherine is underpinned by their complex psychological profiles. Douglas' portrayal of Curran—a cop with a troubled past and a penchant for self-destruction—offers a fascinating glimpse into a man ensnared by his own desires and demons. Sharon Stone's Catherine Tramell, meanwhile, is an iconic figure of the femme fatale archetype, redefined. Stone delivers a career-defining performance, imbuing Catherine with an icy intelligence, seductive charm, and an enigmatic aura that challenges both Nick and the audience's perceptions at every turn. The Screenplay: A Double-Edged SwordEszterhas' screenplay is a masterclass in building suspense and developing intriguing characters, though it's not without its flaws. The dialogue sometimes veers into the melodramatic, and certain plot elements haven't aged well, reflecting the era's less enlightened attitudes. Yet, it's these imperfections that make "Basic Instinct" such a rich subject for analysis. The film's narrative bravado, combined with its thematic ambitions, provides fertile ground for discussions about power dynamics, obsession, and identity.Cultural Significance: A Mirror and a Maeldrome"Basic Instinct" arrived at a crossroads in American cinema and society, reflecting the burgeoning discourse on sexuality, violence, and censorship. It challenged audiences and filmmakers alike to confront their boundaries and biases. The movie's impact extended beyond the silver screen, influencing fashion, music, and literature, and sparking a wave of erotic thrillers that sought to emulate its success. Over three decades later, it remains a reference point for discussions about gender roles, media representation, and the intersection of sex and violence in storytelling.Damo's selection of "Basic Instinct" for the podcast is a testament to its multifaceted legacy. It's a film that can be celebrated for its craft, debated for its content, and analyzed for its cultural impact. Beyond the controversy and the steamy scenes lies a meticulously crafted narrative, compelling character studies, and a commentary on the human psyche's darker recesses. In revisiting "Basic Instinct," we're not just watching a movie; we're engaging with a piece of history that continues to provoke, unsettle, and fascinate. It's a testament to the power of cinema to challenge societal norms, to reflect our deepest fears and desires, and to leave us pondering long after the credits roll. For its boldness, its artistry, and its undiminished capacity to generate discussion, "Basic Instinct" remains a pivotal piece of cinematic art. And, perhaps, that was its intention all along – not just to entertain, but to incite, to provoke thought, and to remain indelibly etched in our collective consciousness.

The episode delves into two major topics: the escalating U.S. migrant crisis under the Biden administration and the UK Post Office Horizon scandal.U.S. Migrant Crisis: The discussion begins with an exploration of the U.S. migrant crisis, noting a significant increase in unauthorized border crossings and the challenges this poses to federal resources and policies. The conversation touches on the varied responses from the government, from expanding deportations to increasing work permit access. Critics from both sides of the political spectrum, Republicans and immigration advocates, are mentioned for their differing views on the administration's approach. The panel also discusses the broader impact of the crisis beyond border areas, particularly in cities like New York, which has seen a substantial influx of migrants. The financial and societal impacts of this influx are explored, along with the political ramifications for the Biden administration.UK Post Office Horizon Scandal: The second part of the podcast shifts focus to the UK Post Office Horizon scandal, a saga involving the wrongful conviction of numerous sub-postmasters due to a faulty software system. The panel discusses the system's introduction, the early warnings that were ignored, and the prolonged struggle for recognition of the issue. The scandal's implications extend to the UK government and Fujitsu, highlighting issues of privatization and lack of oversight. The conversation also covers the media's role in bringing attention to the scandal, the government's response, and broader questions about privatization of public services.Key Quotes:Michael Donoghue: Discussing the U.S. migrant crisis, Michael states, "It's an unavoidable reality at this point. And I think that's why the tide is finally turned on this problem."Jarett Kobeck: On the need for a paradigm shift in U.S. immigration policy, Jared remarks, "The right wing always has a luxury that the center and the center left and the far left don't necessarily have, which is the default position is always just smash it."Tonye Alltrade: Speaking about the UK Post Office scandal, Tanya notes, "We seem to have a cacophony of toxic and secretive organizations who are in bed with the media, who are also, who then are in bed with the government or politicians."Steve O'Neill: Reflecting on the political fallout of the Post Office scandal, Steve observes, "No one trusts politicians, no one trusts the kind of political sphere in the state, and this is a great example of why." How to determine if your girl is crossing lines with other men and inviting their romantic attention. In this video coaching newsletter I discuss an email from a viewer who is 2 months into a new relationship. He can't tell if her interactions with other men or inappropriate or not. She likes meeting new people, going out with her girlfriends and getting drunk with other guys as part of their group. It also appears she's a little naive and gives her phone number out to guys who think she's interested and available. She says she's just being friendly and likes making new friends. This is just a quick announcement about this year's Intelligent Speech Conference. Intelligent Speech brings together your favourite educational podcasters and their fans in a 3 ring circus of edutainment. The conference takes place online from 10 am Eastern and 3pm London time on June 25th. There will 3 keynote speeches, 8 round tables and 24 individual sessions. Each sessions is about 40 minutes each with a lot of time given to Q&A. Early bird tickets are $20 US and you get 10% off when you use the code ”Germans” at checkout. To book your ticket go to intelligentspechconference.com, there is also Facebook page @intelligentspeechconf and you can email the organisers at intelligentspeech@gmail.com. The theme of this year‘s conference is, “Crossing Lines.” Where lines cross are junctures and our era certainly feels like a major juncture in time; at Intelligent Speech 2022, we will be exploring other times when lines have been crossed in one way or another.  There will be some amazing speakers. I am particularly excited about Roberto Toro of the History of Saqartvelo Georgia talking about Georgian influence on the Holy Land and Eric Halsey of the History of Bulgaria putting a spotlight on the forgotten story of the Circassians exodus from their homeland in the 19th century. David Montgomery from The Siecle will be there and the Pontifact girls. The list of fabulous podcasters and broad topics goes on. Jennifer Dasal from the Art Curious podcast will do a keynote speech, Alycia from Civics and Coffee and the Ancient History Fangirls will do sessions. The closing keynote will be by none other than Jamie Jeffers from the British History Podcast who needs no introduction. Yours truly will talk about Crossing the Alps, the ambivalent relationship between Germany and Italy. As you guys know too well, German and Italian history has been inextricably linked ever since Otto the Great wooed Adelheid, queen of Italy in 951. We also talked about how historians of the 19th century saw the involvement in the south as a sink of resources that led to the collapse of central authority and the delayed nationhood of Germany. But there is another side as well, that of a deep attachment to Italy and its people. It wasn't just the medieval emperors and Frederick II most prominently who fell for the charms of the south. The beacons of the Enlightenment were seeking the “Land where the Citrons bloom”. Goethe, Winkelmann, Jacob Burckhardt to name a few embedded love and admiration for our neighbour to the south. This ambivalent relationship between fear of wasting resources and emotional attachment may go back a 1000 years but still shines through, most recently in the question whether and how Germany should support Italy during the Sovereign Debt Crisis of 2012. So, it is hopefully worth it. Early bird tickets are $20 US and you get 10% off when you use the code ”Germans” at checkout. To book your ticket go to intelligentspechconference.com, there is also Facebook page @intelligentspeechconf and you can email the organisers at intelligentspeech@gmail.com. I hope you will join us.

Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz discuss the latest news in the Percy Jackson/Rick Riordan Presents fandom, then jump into Tiger Honor, the sequel to Yoon Ha Lee's first book the in Thousand Worlds series, Dragon Pearl, as well as analyze chapters 9 and 10 of Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:00:53) Karen owns up to her mistakes. Happy birthday, Daniel José Older! Go pre-order Ballad and Dagger. J.C. Cervantes has seen the final cover for The Lords of Night. Rick posted a blog on January 22. First and foremost, go pre-order Aru Shah and the Nectar of Immortality, which comes out on April 5! Pre-ordering books really helps authors (and it might help us, too)! City of the Plague God is now in paperback. Rick recommends The Marvellers by Dhonielle Clayton and The Door of No Return by Kwame Alexander. Karen is also throwing Shattered Midnight into the ring, as it's also by Dhonielle Clayton. We get another lovely Solangelo book update! Also, Kristen totally gets how awesome and interesting LEGOs can be. Be sure to enter our Tiger Honor giveaway! Tiger Honor by Yoon Ha Lee (00:20:59) Read Karen's Tiger Honor book review. What are our general thoughts on Tiger Honor compared to Dragon Pearl? Sebin is a very different main character from Min. Did we like them? Are YOU a rule follower, or do you like to cause trouble like Min? A huge theme of this book is duty and loyalty, both to family and the Space Forces. The Juhwang tiger clan is intense. Like, really intense. Did we like anyone from the tiger clan?? It was nice to see Min and Jun again! Let's meet the new side characters. Which were our favorites? Okay, it's time to talk about Captain Hwan. Have our thoughts changed on him since we last saw him in Dragon Pearl? He's brought in some reinforcements. How did YOU picture Shield, Sena's sapsali? Is there room for more books in the Thousand World series? Chapter Reviews (01:00:15) It's time to talk about Sea of Monsters chapter 9. Okay, is it cool or creepy that Tyson can imitate voices? Do we think Thalia would've been on Luke's side? We totally see where Luke is coming from, but he's going about it the wrong way. Who are Luke's friends at Camp Half-Blood? Is Luke angrier at his dad or at the other gods? We kind of feel bad for Hermes! Tyson is the true MVP. Are you ready for chapter 10? Thank the gods (or one god in particular) for that thermos! But there's a bigger question here—how exactly do Iris messages work? You'll never have to be afraid if you're lost at sea with Percy Jackson! It makes a lot of sense that chain stores are evil. We get a little confused, but Percy has definitely never seen a hydra before. At least book Percy is smarter than movie Percy. Thank goodness for…Clarisse? We love that Percy recognized his own jealousy. You can take the demigod out of the city, but you can't take the city out of the demigod. Who doesn't love a good Monster Donut? Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next time for episode 17, where we'll discuss “The Diary of Luke Castellan” from The Demigod Diaries. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Each episode, our Prophecy Radio hosts and their guests will keep you up to date on the latest information coming out of Camp Half-Blood, including upcoming books and adaptation news, discuss a topic of choice, and do a chapter by chapter reread of the Percy Jackson series.
