Johnny Mac recaps Variety's interview with Jeff Ross about the Kevin Hart roast, including Ross's view that well-crafted jokes don't hurt, a surreal moment when he missed Hart's jab while stuck in a locked-bathroom scramble, and the only real tension arising when Katt Williams surprised Hart before Hart quickly turned it celebratory. Ross says nothing was off-limits, credits producer Casey Patterson for secrecy that preserves surprise, and notes live edits and the teleprompter operators' difficulty. Vulture argues Sheryl Underwood “won” by resetting the room's energy. Mac dismisses a Radar Online claim that ABC is reconsidering Jimmy Kimmel, then runs through Kimmel's and Seth Meyers' upfronts material and late-night industry jokes. He notes James Corden's Fox World Cup aftershow, Jason Zinoman's praise of John Mulaney and rising comics, and Heather Shaw's YouTube special release. 00:19 Jeff Ross Roast Chaos02:30 Crossing Lines and Sequencing03:55 Roast Production Secrets04:55 Who Should Get Roasted Next05:17 Sheryl Underwood Steals Show06:10 Kimmel Gossip and Upfronts09:34 Seth Meyers NBC Jabs11:10 James Corden World Cup Show12:45 NYT on Mulaney and Newcomers14:37 Heather Shaw Special and WrapBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/daily-comedy-news-with-johnny-mac-a-daily-briefing-on-comedians-and-the-comedy-industry--4522158/support.Daily Comedy News is the number one comedy news podcast, delivering daily coverage of standup comedy, late night television, comedy specials, tours, and the business of comedy.COMEDY SURVIVOR in the facebook group.Contact John at John@thesharkdeck dot com For Uninterrupted Listening, use the Apple Podcast App and click the banner that says Uninterrupted Listening. $4.99/month John's Substack about media is free. This is the animal sanctuary mentioned in the February 10 episode.

Mauro Campanelli and Steve Connor are the passionate folks behind Straw Dog Racing, the group that organizes Sulphur Springs Trail Race, the Western States Qualifier in Hamilton, Ontario. They are inspired to make their event as fun as possible and ensure runners have a great experience, no matter what distance they decide to tackle. It was so much fun for me to hear how much they care and how much they think about all the details. They even work through a substantial wait list each year to try and get as many runners as possible to the start lines. It's all about the vibe!Crossing Lines has been heavily involved in this event over the years, and so it was really awesome to have Mauro and Steve on the show to chat more about it! A growing body of research shows that lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and other sexuality and gender-diverse (LGBTQ+) people experience disproportionately high levels of sexual violence. However, there is limited understanding of the characteristics and contexts of those who use sexual violence against LGBTQ+ individuals. Crossing Lines from the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health, and Society (or ARCSHS) will investigate unwanted sexual behaviours against LGBTQ+ people, aiming to generate actionable knowledge to improve responses to such violence. It focuses on the social forces, risk factors, and characteristics of those who use sexual violence. ARCSHS will conduct interviews with victim-survivors, those who use violence, and service providers to develop resources that better support victim-survivors and enhance interventions for those who use violence. Crossing Lines founders Kortnee Borden and Matt Geofroy had spent many years running with Parkdale Roadrunners: they had always been able to find ways to push for their own goals while helping others feel the magic of getting out in equal measure. But when they entered the ultra endurance trail space, they noticed something missing: people of colour. So they decided to take action and create change. Crossing Lines is a movement that is making the ultra endurance space more welcoming for BIPOC runners: they teach people the skills they need to be set up for success and do everything they can to support their journey to the start line. Now deep in their second season, they are getting ready for another huge race and making amazing memories along the way. To broaden the conversation even further, they also host the Crossing Lines Podcast, with their friends Meddy, James and Adam. They talk trails, gear, culture, current events (Harry Styles and MothTech, anyone?) and hang out with interesting guests. Crossing Lines: Cross-Ethnic Coalitions in India and Prospects for Minority Representation (Routledge, 2024) explains why, how, and where ethnic political parties unexpectedly seek votes from non-coethnics and when voters support non-coethnic parties. It draws on case studies of three Indian states (Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan) and of Indian national elections to demonstrate how differences in party systems impact political party strategies and voter choices. It shows that multipolar party systems encourage political parties to provide physical security, representation, and economic benefits for minorities, especially Muslims, in India and as a result, foster cross-ethnic links between parties and voters. However, as political arenas become dominated by two or even one party, advocacy for the interests of marginalized groups declines, weakening cross-ethnic linkages. The book thus explains why representation and advocacy for Muslims in Uttar Pradesh and at the national level has alternated dramatically in the 21st century. Yash is a PhD candidate in Political Science at the School of Public and International Affairs, University of Cincinnati. His research is focused on the interactions of political mobilization and anti-minority violence within Hindu nationalist organizations in India. North Korea's policy-making is an ambiguous and shady domain. Little information on the domestic reality of the country filters to the outside world, but the impacts of Pyongyang's foreign policy on regional - and global - security need to be uncovered. In early 2024, North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un, announced that the objective of “reunification” with South Korea is no longer considered possible. More than 70 years after the end of the Korean war in 1953, which formally divided the two states, a significant shift in the North's policies towards the South could have a wider meaning for the region. In this episode, Samuel Pearson and Siddesh Shimpukade join Arnold Koch to provide us with a deeper understanding of the hidden nuances of the Korean peninsula's security dynamics, with an eye to the potential threats of tomorrow.

Crossing Lines: The Ultimate Guide to Breaks Interstate Park is the fifth episode in our series promoting Northeast Tennessee as a tourism destination. It is produced in collaboration with Visit Johnson City and regional partners hosting the OWAA's inaugural Field Fest event.Today, our guest is Austin Bradley, Superintendent at Breaks Interstate Park. Austin is a dedicated advocate for outdoor conservation and public education about America's state and national parks. Austin's work primarily focuses on The Breaks Interstate Park, a unique 5,000-acre area park tucked away in Kentucky and Virginia's rugged, scenic borders and administered jointly by Kentucky and Virginia. Unlike traditional state parks, The Breaks is one of only two interstate parks in the nation, sharing this distinction with Palisades Interstate Park, between New York and New Jersey. His efforts aim to enhance awareness and preservation of these vital recreational and natural resources, ensuring they remain a priority in the public consciousness.TOPICS WE DISCUSSED
When "Basic Instinct" first graced cinema screens in 1992, it didn't just arrive; it detonated with the force of a cultural and cinematic bombshell. Directed by Paul Verhoeven and penned by Joe Eszterhas, this neo-noir thriller became a topic of fervent discussion, controversy, and analysis. Damo's pick for the podcast, undoubtedly, underscores not just the film's enduring impact but also its provocative standing in the annals of movie history. So, let's dive into the icy waters of "Basic Instinct" and explore what makes it such a compelling, if contentious, masterpiece. The Plot: A Labyrinth of Desire and DeceptionAt its core, "Basic Instinct" is a detective story, but labelling it as such feels reductive. The narrative follows San Francisco police detective Nick Curran (played by Michael Douglas), who investigates the brutal murder of a rock star. The prime suspect? Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone), a brilliant, enigmatic novelist whose fictional murders eerily resemble real-life killings. What unfolds is a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, but who's the cat and who's the mouse shifts with the narrative's serpentine twists and turns.Cinematography: Crafting the Neo-Noir AestheticVerhoeven's direction and Jan de Bont's cinematography paint "Basic Instinct" in the stark contrasts and shadows of classic film noir, yet with a distinctly modern flair that's both sleek and raw. The film's visual style is not just a backdrop but a character in its own right. It amplifies the story's erotic tension and the psychological depth of its characters, using the moody landscapes of San Francisco and a chilling score by Jerry Goldsmith to deepen the atmosphere of suspense. The Controversy: Pushing Boundaries or Crossing Lines? No discussion of "Basic Instinct" can skirt around the controversy it ignited upon release. Its graphic violence and explicit sexuality, particularly the infamous interrogation scene, sparked debates on misogyny, homophobia, and the exploitation of women in cinema. The film was both condemned and celebrated for its unapologetic content, becoming a lightning rod for discussions about censorship, artistic freedom, and the portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters in media. Despite the polarized reactions, it's this very controversy that cemented the film's place in pop culture and academic discourse.Character Development: An Intricate DanceThe chess match between Nick and Catherine is underpinned by their complex psychological profiles. Douglas' portrayal of Curran—a cop with a troubled past and a penchant for self-destruction—offers a fascinating glimpse into a man ensnared by his own desires and demons. Sharon Stone's Catherine Tramell, meanwhile, is an iconic figure of the femme fatale archetype, redefined. Stone delivers a career-defining performance, imbuing Catherine with an icy intelligence, seductive charm, and an enigmatic aura that challenges both Nick and the audience's perceptions at every turn. The Screenplay: A Double-Edged SwordEszterhas' screenplay is a masterclass in building suspense and developing intriguing characters, though it's not without its flaws. The dialogue sometimes veers into the melodramatic, and certain plot elements haven't aged well, reflecting the era's less enlightened attitudes. Yet, it's these imperfections that make "Basic Instinct" such a rich subject for analysis. The film's narrative bravado, combined with its thematic ambitions, provides fertile ground for discussions about power dynamics, obsession, and identity.Cultural Significance: A Mirror and a Maeldrome"Basic Instinct" arrived at a crossroads in American cinema and society, reflecting the burgeoning discourse on sexuality, violence, and censorship. It challenged audiences and filmmakers alike to confront their boundaries and biases. The movie's impact extended beyond the silver screen, influencing fashion, music, and literature, and sparking a wave of erotic thrillers that sought to emulate its success. Over three decades later, it remains a reference point for discussions about gender roles, media representation, and the intersection of sex and violence in storytelling.Damo's selection of "Basic Instinct" for the podcast is a testament to its multifaceted legacy. It's a film that can be celebrated for its craft, debated for its content, and analyzed for its cultural impact. Beyond the controversy and the steamy scenes lies a meticulously crafted narrative, compelling character studies, and a commentary on the human psyche's darker recesses. In revisiting "Basic Instinct," we're not just watching a movie; we're engaging with a piece of history that continues to provoke, unsettle, and fascinate. It's a testament to the power of cinema to challenge societal norms, to reflect our deepest fears and desires, and to leave us pondering long after the credits roll. For its boldness, its artistry, and its undiminished capacity to generate discussion, "Basic Instinct" remains a pivotal piece of cinematic art. And, perhaps, that was its intention all along – not just to entertain, but to incite, to provoke thought, and to remain indelibly etched in our collective consciousness.

Mid-Atlantic - conversations about US, UK and world politics
The episode delves into two major topics: the escalating U.S. migrant crisis under the Biden administration and the UK Post Office Horizon scandal.U.S. Migrant Crisis: The discussion begins with an exploration of the U.S. migrant crisis, noting a significant increase in unauthorized border crossings and the challenges this poses to federal resources and policies. The conversation touches on the varied responses from the government, from expanding deportations to increasing work permit access. Critics from both sides of the political spectrum, Republicans and immigration advocates, are mentioned for their differing views on the administration's approach. The panel also discusses the broader impact of the crisis beyond border areas, particularly in cities like New York, which has seen a substantial influx of migrants. The financial and societal impacts of this influx are explored, along with the political ramifications for the Biden administration.UK Post Office Horizon Scandal: The second part of the podcast shifts focus to the UK Post Office Horizon scandal, a saga involving the wrongful conviction of numerous sub-postmasters due to a faulty software system. The panel discusses the system's introduction, the early warnings that were ignored, and the prolonged struggle for recognition of the issue. The scandal's implications extend to the UK government and Fujitsu, highlighting issues of privatization and lack of oversight. The conversation also covers the media's role in bringing attention to the scandal, the government's response, and broader questions about privatization of public services.Key Quotes:Michael Donoghue: Discussing the U.S. migrant crisis, Michael states, "It's an unavoidable reality at this point. And I think that's why the tide is finally turned on this problem."Jarett Kobeck: On the need for a paradigm shift in U.S. immigration policy, Jared remarks, "The right wing always has a luxury that the center and the center left and the far left don't necessarily have, which is the default position is always just smash it."Tonye Alltrade: Speaking about the UK Post Office scandal, Tanya notes, "We seem to have a cacophony of toxic and secretive organizations who are in bed with the media, who are also, who then are in bed with the government or politicians."Steve O'Neill: Reflecting on the political fallout of the Post Office scandal, Steve observes, "No one trusts politicians, no one trusts the kind of political sphere in the state, and this is a great example of why." How to determine if your girl is crossing lines with other men and inviting their romantic attention. In this video coaching newsletter I discuss an email from a viewer who is 2 months into a new relationship. He can't tell if her interactions with other men or inappropriate or not. She likes meeting new people, going out with her girlfriends and getting drunk with other guys as part of their group. It also appears she's a little naive and gives her phone number out to guys who think she's interested and available. She says she's just being friendly and likes making new friends. This makes him very uncomfortable and he wonders if she is a trustworthy woman. If you have not read my book, “How To Be A 3% Man” yet, that would be a good starting place for you.
