John Calvin, in his famous Christmas day sermon in 1551 said, “When you elevate one day alone for the purpose of worshiping God, you have just turned it into an idol. True, you insist that you have done so for the honor of God, but it is more for the honor of the devil” (Roach, Dec 13, 2016). Harsh words indeed, but Calvin's message was a caution, first, to believers that the church ought to celebrate and honour Christ's birth, but that it should be a day of worship that is restrained by moderation. Secondly, Calvin brings a message of caution to non-believers that if this is not a day of worship of Christ, you are essentially committing idolatry. Shall we dare to lift the veil of ignorance. | In this podcast, Dr Rod Eadie, from Philosophy and Faith, interviews Jesse Baker about the message, origin, and idolatry of Christmas.

Today we started a new teaching series on Leviticus. In our first teaching, Pastor Jesse taught that the burnt offering was a costly and daily sacrifice that drew remorseful sinners into the holy presence of God. The pure blood of the sacrificial victim was shed for the tainted life of the repentant sinner. Likewise, Jesus is our perfect burnt offering. On the altar of the cross, he restores the broken relationship of repentant sinners with God and enables them to now dwell in his holy presence forever. What sweet reconciliation? Disclaimer - This talk is not designed to address every question or situation about issues around the sacredness of human life. This teaching aims to rather offer some biblical principles on how we can “love our [most vulnerable] neighbours as ourselves” (Mark 12:31). Date: 3-9-23 Text: Psalm 139:13-16 Preacher: Pastor Jesse
