The first episode delves into the book of Acts and the theology of the New Testament church, emphasizing the importance of diving deeper into the sermons. The conversation delves into the concept of religion, the practice of faith, and the challenge of discipleship. It emphasizes the importance of being a witness for Christ and the power of personal testimony. The proximity of the gospel and the need to start where you are is also highlighted.TakeawaysDiscipleship through the Word of GodUnderstanding the theology of the New Testament church Religion is about practicing faith, not legalismBeing a witness for Christ is about sharing your personal testimonyThe gospel should be shared starting from where you areChapters00:00 Introduction to More and Better Podcast10:01 Understanding the Author of Luke and Acts17:37 The Time of the Gentiles and the Church Age39:30 The Proximity of the Gospel

One Year Bible Podcast: Join Hunter and Heather Barnes on the Daily Radio Bible, a daily Bible‑in‑a‑year podcast with 20‑minute Scripture readings, Christ‑centered devotion, and guided prayer. This daily Bible reading and devotional invites you to live as a citizen of Jesus' kingdom, reconciled, renewed, and deeply loved. TODAY'S EPISODE: Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible, friends! In today's episode, Hunter invites us on a journey through Leviticus 13 and 14, where we hear about the intricate laws around skin diseases and purification in the Old Testament, and then into Acts 17, where Paul boldly proclaims the good news of Jesus to the curious and skeptical philosophers of Athens. As your Bible reading coach, Hunter helps us see how both ancient rituals and the early church's message of Christ's love point us to a God who is present and at work in all people, whether they realize it yet or not. Alongside the scripture readings, you'll hear reflections on opening the eyes of our hearts to God's boundless love, and prayers asking for peace, hope, and the grace to live knowing we are already embraced by God. It's a reminder that wherever we are—whether in Portland, New Jersey, Houston, or across the world—God's love and presence are already with us. So grab your Bible, settle in, and let's walk together through today's passages, discovering more of the One in whom we live and move and have our being. TODAY'S DEVOTION: TODAY'S DEVOTION: They called him a babbler, a teacher of strange things. That's what they said of Paul when he appeared before the philosophers of Athens. How is it that even the most enlightened among us can hear the good news of the gospel and end up interpreting it as babble? "What's this babbler trying to say with these strange ideas he's picked up?" God reveals God. Ours is to participate with God who reveals himself, the God who's already at work. Paul knows this. That's why he looks out over all the people of Athens and he says, you are already living and moving and having your being in God. He's already right here. He's already with you. You just don't know it yet. I've come to tell you who he is, to tell you how good he is, how he has already purchased your freedom and the life that you so deeply desire. The gospel is the good news that God has come to us in our blindness and opens our eyes to behold who he is. It's a declaration of what is and what has been done. When our eyes are open, we see that we are his children and we did nothing to bring that about, that God was always at work in my life long before I had any clue. This God who loved me has loved and embraced the whole world. He's looked upon the whole human race like a good father looks upon children he loves. The world doesn't know it yet, but that's what's true. To many, it all sounds like babble because they're blind. They've bought into a lie of separation. We don't think God is for us. We're blind to the God who loved us before we even knew him. But God opens eyes, and God reveals himself, and he's come to let the whole world know that they are loved. We, like Paul, are invited to see what God sees, to participate and proclaim this good news in Athens, in Portland, in New Jersey, Houston, all around the world. He's already there. People are living and moving and having their being in him. He's opening their eyes. He's showing everyone, ordinary people like you and I. He's showing all of us. He's making himself known. Do you hear him? Do you hear what he's saying to you? Or does it all just sound like babble? My prayer is that the eyes of your heart will be opened to see the depth, the length, the width, the height of God's love for you. That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ.  Amen.  OUR WEBSITE: www.dailyradiobible.com We are reading through the New Living Translation.   Leave us a voicemail HERE: https://www.speakpipe.com/dailyradiobible Subscribe to us at YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Dailyradiobible/featured OTHER PODCASTS: Listen with Apple Podcast DAILY BIBLE FOR KIDS DAILY PSALMS DAILY PROVERBS DAILY LECTIONARY DAILY CHRONOLOGICAL

“But the Jews who were not persuaded, becoming envious, took some of the evil men from the marketplace, and gathering a mob, set all the city in an uproar and attacked the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, ‘These who have turned the world upside down have come here too.’” (Acts 17:5–6 NKJV) Why is it that first-century believers so radically impacted their world? After all, they didn’t have the cool technology we have today. They didn’t have well-known Christian authors and performers. They didn’t have megachurches. They didn’t have printing presses. Yet a relatively small group of men and women turned their first-century world on its ear, or “upside down,” as the Jewish leaders put it in Acts 17. They intended those words as a criticism of Christians—as a warning to others about them. But their description revealed the seismic impact Jesus’ followers had on the world around them. It’s also quite possible that the Jewish leaders inadvertently aided Christians in their evangelism efforts. Who wouldn’t be intrigued by the possibility of turning the world upside down? Yet for many believers today, those sights have been lowered considerably. People are content to live quiet, unobtrusive Christian lives. They don’t want to kick up too much dust in their walk with Christ. Especially in the United States, many believers are surviving on a watered-down, anemic version of Christianity. They don’t seem to be living at the same standard of Christian faith as the first-century Christians lived. You might say they have a “faith-light.” They seem to want to do only what is absolutely necessary. To put it another way, Jesus has a lot of fair-weather followers today. They will be Christians when it’s convenient, when it’s easy, or when it’s the popular thing to do. But the moment things get difficult, the moment hardship hits, the moment persecution rears its head, they retreat. They abandon their faith. They prove themselves to be less than true followers, less than real disciples. That certainly would explain why they’re not turning the world upside down. It also would explain why, far too often, the world seems to be turning the church upside down. Believers today need to get back to Christianity the way it is given to us in the Bible, the way that Jesus proclaimed it, the way the early church lived it—not the watered-down version of today but authentic, New Testament Christianity. In short, we need to become disciples of the Lord. Are you a disciple of Jesus Christ? Jesus asks His people to step out from the multitude, from the fair-weather followers, from the fickle people, to be His true disciples. Yet He never asks more from us than we can give. Not only will He reward our genuine discipleship, but He will also guide and direct us every step of the way. Reflection question: What would bold discipleship look like in your life? The Gospel is not a disruption of the natural order, but a restoration of it. To a world living upside down in sin, the truth of Jesus Christ appears as an upheaval. The Bible is the touchstone of truth; when it contradicts our feelings or culture, it’s revealing how far off course we are. Jesus declared that his disciples would be his witnesses “to the ends of the earth.” Early Christians lived out this proclamation in powerful and palpable ways. New Hope Daily SOAP - Daily Devotional Bible Reading

Daily Dose of Hope December 15, 2025   Scripture - Acts 17   Prayer:  Holy God, Almighty Father, the Great I AM, throughout all time, you are good.  Your ways are perfect.  Teach us your ways, Lord.  Help us to know you better, to know you more.  Lord, on our own, we are powerless.  We are desperate for your wisdom, love, and mercy.  More of you and less of me, Jesus.  Amen.   Welcome back to the Daily Dose of Hope, the devotional and podcast that complements the New Hope Church Bible reading plan.  We have now walked through the Gospels and we are in the second half of the book of Acts.  Today, we will discuss Acts 17.   In this chapter, Paul preaches in Thessalonica, Berea, and Athens.  At each place, he tailors his message to his audience but it's still clearly the Gospel.  The reception he receives at each location is different too.  In Thessalonica and Berea, he starts at the synagogue, which has been his pattern.  He preaches the Gospel to the Jews first.  Some Jews believe in Jesus, as did a number of prominent Greek men and women.  But things turn south pretty quickly.  A number of Jews in Thessalonica are jealous at Paul's success and they raise up a mob to stop him.  They actually go to home in which they are staying and drag out Jason and other believers, arresting them and forcing them to post bond.  Paul and Silas were being helped by other believers, who were aiding their travel to Berea.   In Berea, they were accepted warming at first.  People believe.  But the troublemakers from Thessalonica find out that Paul and Silas are there and they try to get hold of them there.  But Paul and Silas are helped once again by believers who help them get to the coast.   In Athens, things are different still.  The philosophers are interested in what Paul has to say and he shares the Gospel and there are varied reactions – belief, sneering, and wanting more information.  But they aren't beaten up or thrown in jail, so that is quite a relief.   In each city, as different as they are, there are some people who take to the Gospel message right away and others who have more questions.  I think this is such a great model for us.  We share as God leads us and we tailor the message to those who are listening.  If we are telling the Jesus story to Jews, then we will focus on the Old Testament and the various prophecies about Jesus.  If we are telling the Jesus story to Gentiles, then the story will be spoken in a way that makes sense to them.  Paul appealed to what they knew – think about his use of the altar to an unknown God in Athens.    In our world, I present the Gospel to someone who grew up in the church differently than I do to someone who has never heard of Jesus.  I guess the theme here is know your audience and listen to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.   Blessings, Pastor Vicki

Paul and Silas visited Thessalonica as a part of the 2nd Missionary Journey. As was their custom, they first went to the synagogue to preach from the Old Testament that Jesus is the Christ. Many believed, but many did not. Those that did not became jealous and caused such trouble for the Christians in Thessalonica that Paul and Silas left more quickly than they would have liked. In Berea, the Word was received with great joy, but the jealous Thessalonian Jews followed Paul and chased him away from there as well. Paul's brief ministry among the Thessalonians sets the stage for the two letters he writes back to them only a short time later.  Rev. Sean Kilgo, pastor at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Lawrence, KS, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Acts 17:1-15.  To learn more about Redeemer Lutheran, visit trinitylcmsvinton.org. “Yearning for the Day of Christ's Returning” is a mini-series on Sharper Iron that studies St. Paul's two epistles to the Thessalonians. Although Paul's time in Thessalonica was brief, he had great affection for the Christians there. His two letters to the Thessalonians show us the joy that God gives us together in the Church and encourage us to live faithfully in expectation of Jesus' coming on the Last Day.  Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org
