Acts 17:16-21 – Provoked in Athens
What provokes you? Traffic? Offense? Frustration? In this message, we learn that instead of ranting, complaining, or withdrawing, the follower of Jesus is called to lead with compassion. When our hearts are stirred the right way, we are provoked to pursue lost people with grace and with the truth of the Gospel.

Delve into Paul's masterful teaching as he meticulously reasoned from scripture, proving that Jesus is the long-awaited Christ. This sermon unpacks how deep biblical understanding, combined with divine revelation, revolutionised hearts and ignited fierce opposition.

In this week's teaching, we follow Paul into the city of Athens, where beauty, intellect, and idols all collide. As he walks among temples and statues, Paul feels deeply stirred—not with judgment, but with compassion for a people searching for meaning. Instead of retreating, he steps toward them, entering their marketplace and their conversations with curiosity and courage. From there, he points them to the God who made the world and to Jesus, the risen King who is closer than they imagine. This episode invites us to see our own culture through Paul's eyes and to carry the hope of Jesus into every corner of the world around us.

The Book of Acts is the second of a two-part work by Luke, the traveling companion and co-laborer of the apostle Paul. The first part of Luke's writings, Gospel of Luke, tells us all that Jesus began to do and teach. The second part, the Book of Acts, tells us what the risen and ascended Jesus continues to do through His church by the power of the Holy Spirit. The testimony of what Christ did in the early church is not only for our encouragement but also our instruction as we seek to be faithful to the mission of proclaiming the gospel and multiplying disciples.

In a city filled with idols and ideas, Paul models how to share Jesus with skeptical hearts. Acts 17 shows us that the gospel meets people where they are, names their longings, and calls them to turn and believe.
Paul and Silas opened the scriptures in Thessalonica to show that the Christ must suffer and that Jesus was that Christ. Many responded to the truth. But there was heavy paid opposition from the Jews of the synagogue.
A refresher sermon on the importance of Holy Scripture. This is a forward to my soon series through Paul's first epistle to young Timothy.

Listen along as we continue through the book of Acts. Acts 17:1-15 - Faith Acts 17:1-15 “The resurrection was indeed a miraculous display of God's power, but we should not see it as a suspension of the natural order of the world. Rather it was the beginning of the restoration of the natural order of the world, the world as God intended it to be…The resurrection means not merely that Christians have a hope for the future but that they have a hope that comes from the future. The Bible's startling message is that when Jesus rose, he brought the future kingdom of God into the present.” - Tim Keller 1 Thess 1:1-10 1 Thess 5:1-11 Holiness is the habit of being of one mind with God, according as we find His mind described in Scripture. It is the habit of agreeing in God's judgment, hating what He hates, loving what He loves, and measuring everything in this world by the standard of His Word. - JC Ryle The Bible isn't a book of rules, or a book of heroes. The Bible is most of all a Story. It's an adventure story about a young Hero who comes from a far country to win back his lost treasure. It's a love story about a brave Prince who leaves his palace, his throne—everything— to rescue the one he loves. It's like the most wonderful of fairy tales that has come true in real life! There are lots of stories in the Bible, but all the stories are telling one Big Story. The Story of how God loves his children and comes to rescue them. - Sally Lloyd Jones What's going on? Where is the good news? How has the church seen this through history? How does this shape us toward repentance/faith/flourishing? Psalm 119:105 Hebrews 4:12 Ephesians 6:17
