Paul was deeply troubled by the idolatry that existed in Athens. He faced off with his secular audience by immediately directing their attention to the altar of the Unknown God. Proclaiming that He is the Creator of the Universe and does not live in temples built by human hands. He challenged and summoned them to respond to the crucified, risen Lord. This is a great model for us to follow in sharing Jesus with others. Dave Bartlett
Acts 17:16-34 16 Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw that the city was full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there. 18 Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him. And some said, “What does this babbler wish to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities”—because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection. 19 And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? 20 For you bring some strange things to our ears. We wish to know therefore what these things mean.” 21 Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new. 22 So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. 23 For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: ‘To the unknown god.' What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. 24 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. 26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, 28 for “‘In him we live and move and have our being'; as even some of your own poets have said, “‘For we are indeed his offspring.' 29 Being then God's offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man. 30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.” 32 Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked. But others said, “We will hear you again about this.” 33 So Paul went out from their midst. 34 But some men joined him and believed, among whom also were Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them. Key Words: Idols, Reason, Worship, Make, Mankind, Seek, Repent, Judge, Resurrection Keystone Verse: The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. The world is upside down. Our world in which we live is spiritually (as well as morally and in many other respects) upside down. What does this mean? Since the fall into sin by our ancestor Adam and Eve, the result of mankind’s actions is the opposite of what God desires. The world does […]

Paul, Silas and Timothy continue on their missionary journey bringing boldly the message of Jesus, no matter the opposition. They encourage us today as believers, to be faithful in sharing the Truth courageously and lovingly, entrusting the results for spiritual transformation to God, the only One who can bring it about. The Bereans are also examples to us to be students of God's Word, so we can adequately share the Truth with others. By Dave Bartlett
Acts 17:1-15 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. 2 And Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ.” 4 And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a great many of the devout Greeks and not a few of the leading women. 5 But the Jews were jealous, and taking some wicked men of the rabble, they formed a mob, set the city in an uproar, and attacked the house of Jason, seeking to bring them out to the crowd. 6 And when they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city authorities, shouting, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also, 7 and Jason has received them, and they are all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.” 8 And the people and the city authorities were disturbed when they heard these things. 9 And when they had taken money as security from Jason and the rest, they let them go. 10 The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. 11 Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. 12 Many of them therefore believed, with not a few Greek women of high standing as well as men. 13 But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul at Berea also, they came there too, agitating and stirring up the crowds. 14 Then the brothers immediately sent Paul off on his way to the sea, but Silas and Timothy remained there. 15 Those who conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens, and after receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible, they departed. Key Words: Explaining, Proving, Necessary, Jealous, Money, Noble, Examining Keystone Verse: They received the Word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. How handy are you? Can you patch drywall? Swap out a dead outlet? Do you know how to frame out a door? One of the most essential skills for any homeowner to know is how to repair a leak. As any plumber knows, the first step to stopping a leak is turning off the supply, preventing water from hindering the repair. In today's message, Pastor Mark teaches that the most practical way to fix a leaky spiritual life and feel the presence and power of God is to first slow the leak. If sin keeps flowing out of your heart, it just makes it that much harder to fix. Today, choose repentance and turn from the sins that keep you stuck where you are.

Travis Rymer preaches from Acts 17:31, in this Sunday evening gathering of Grace Harbor Church.
Paul stood on Mars Hill and told the intellectual elite, “What you worship as unknown, I proclaim to you.” This week, we looked at that sermon — and yeah, we tied in Charlie Kirk's assassination and what it means to be “Mars Hill brave” in our own cultural battleground. “There's no argument that can disprove truth, so the only response is always violence.” “Only good people go to heaven — and there's only one truly good person. His name is Jesus.” Some mocked Paul, some delayed, a few believed. Same responses today. Behind every immaculately trimmed lawn and hidden trash can in the city's finest subdivision is a wonderful thing called an HOA covenant. They keep cars from parking on the street and make sure all house modifications fit the theme of the neighborhood, but they sure keep things looking great! Today, Pastor Mark teaches that many believers treat tithing like paying HOA dues and expect church membership to keep them looking nice on the inside. However, the reality is that the outside of your house can look clean while the inside is a mess. Only a relationship with Jesus can get your house in order.
It's so easy to take our food for granted. If you think about the quickest meal you can probably get – a McDonald's cheeseburger – consider how long it took to be created. The cow for the patty had to grow for several years, as did the wheat for the bun. The lettuce, tomato, and onion didn't just appear overnight! In today's message, Pastor Mark isn't talking about burgers, but he will teach you that spiritual growth takes time. As seeds are planted and watered, one day, enough spiritual formation happens that the results are completely unrecognizable from the initial seed. Transformation is a slow, daily process.
In society, there are all kinds of false gods and idols. Whether it's social justice issues, sports, food, or social media… all of them can become gods that separate us from the one true God. They creep in and steal our attention, drawing us away from Jesus. It's often said that if the devil can't get your heart, he will make you busy. In today's message, Pastor Mark teaches that Paul sets an example for all of us. He didn't just sit idly by while these things captured the heart of those around him. He stood up boldly and challenged people to turn to God. Will you follow suit? Will you stand firm in your faith and point people towards Jesus?
People used to walk miles…not steps, not just to the other room, but miles just to read the Word of God and fact-check what they heard to what God said. That is unheard of in today's society. More often than not, people just take what they hear and either forget about it or take it with the accountability of a person. In today's message, Pastor Mark will challenge you…how often do you read your Bible? At what lengths are you willing to go to just to make sure you are in right standing with God? Do you spend more time on your phone than you do in the Bible? You can take that step today, make being in the Scripture your #1 priority!
God works in ways that are incomprehensible to our minds. But He gave us His word, the living Bible, to be able to understand a sliver of what He has done, is doing, and even will do! The Bible is a way for us to accept the unknown and learn to trust God because He has proven trustworthy over and over again! In today's message, Pastor Mark will invite you to fact-check everything you come across in the Bible. Whether you're making a simple choice or receiving advice or guidance from pastors, check if it aligns with what God has clearly said and stated in HIS Word! The Bible is applicable today…use it!!!
Pastor Dan preached from Acts 17:16–34, emphasizing that Jesus Christ is the only true image of God, in contrast to the man-made idols worshiped in Athens. He showed that God alone is sovereign—He created the world, determines our times and boundaries, commands repentance, and has proven His authority by raising Jesus from the dead. Pastor Daniel applied this truth personally, reminding us that God is sovereign in salvation (Ephesians 1:3–11) and in every detail of our daily lives (James 4:13–15). The call was clear: to worship the living God, repent of idolatry, and trust His sovereign will over life and eternity .#GodIsSovereign #Acts17 #JesusIsLord #TrueWorship #RepentAndBelieve #ResurrectionPower #ChristAlone #BiblicalPreaching
Athens had Zeus, Athena, and Apollo. We've got money, sports, politics, and little glowing screens in our pockets. Same idols. New packaging. The problem? We don't even notice them anymore. Paul was disgusted. We're entertained.
The resurrection grounds meaning at the intersection of transcendence and immanence.

Acts 17, Paul stands in the heart of Athens—surrounded by idols, philosophies, and endless searching—and proclaims the truth about the God they didn't even realize they were missing. In a culture filled with noise, distractions, and false promises, this same message is just as urgent for us today: The God you're looking for is not unknown. He has revealed Himself in Jesus Christ.Main scripture: Acts 17; 1 Corinthians 3:6-7; Ephesians 5:15-16; 2 Peter 2:1-3; Jeremiah 14:14
