He went to school in St Albans, Hertfordshire and later attended the University of Sheffield where he studied English Literature and Drama. After graduation Andrew set up and ran a small independent theatre company which showcased a range of original material to local, regional and national audiences. Following a critically successful but financially challenging appearance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival Andrew moved into the telecommunications industry as a ‘temporary' solution to a short-term cash crisis. Fifteen years later, after carrying out a variety of roles – including a number which were covered by the UK Official Secrets Act – Andrew escaped from corporate life, and established himself as the author of the critically-acclaimed novels Even, Die Twice, More Harm Than Good, RUN, False Positive, False Friend, False Witness, Invisible, and Too Close To Home. Andrew is married to novelist Tasha Alexander, and lives on a wildlife preserve in Wyoming, USA. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/writersink/support

Semen is the crack cocaine of the fly world, and while maggots love a corpse, flies feast on live human flesh and fluids. So, could a fly frame you for murder? And how do police differentiate fly 'artifacts' from human biological material at a crime scene? These are all things forensic biologist, Dr Annalisa Durdle has studied. Can Ultrasound have a false positive for fracture?

When I see a runner who's had a sprain or a trip or a fall or something, the #1 concern is to make sure no bones are broken.  Most of the time, what I do is I take a portable ultrasound unit with me so that I can look at the foot on the spot and try to figure out whether or not there is a fracture.    I had a question about this as a comment on one of the Doc On The Run YouTube video episodes where I was talking about ultrasound imaging in the foot when you're a runner.  The question was, “Can you get a false negative? Can you get a false positive?”   Can you get a false negative if you're looking for a fracture with an ultrasound unit?  Well, that's a great question and that's what we're talking about today on the Doc On The Run Podcast.

There's no such thing as a “false positive syphilis confirmation test”, is there? After all… It's right there in the name, CONFIRMATION test! Well, not all positive confirmation tests are true positives, especially when that test is the FTA-ABS. Yes, it's true, the specificity for this is very good between 95 to 98%. But there are cases of BFPs (Biologic False Positives), which have been reported and published in the literature. This is why putting the test results in clinical context is very important. In this episode, we will highlight a real clinical scenario where a “low level“ confirmation test did not fit the clinical picture (asymptomatic, monogamous, low risk patient). Is there something else going on here? What about autoimmune conditions? Can pregnancy itself cause a false positive FTA-ABS? And more importantly… What are the options for management in this case? We'll discuss all of this, and also review the “reverse syphilis algorithm” in this episode.
