We're back! So sorry for the delay, we missed last week due to Ben being stricken with shingles. A late October witch's pox no doubt. But now we're back with another spooky duology so just pretend it's still Halloween for a few more days.Friend of the show, past and future guest, and comedian extraordinaire Joel Edmiston joins us to talk about one of, if not the best horror comedy ever AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON! We talk about John Landis (prison) we talk about Joel's hatred for Howie Mandel (also prison), and we wax nostalgic about our love for this classic film bro film.We also talk about some new releases we've seen recently like FRANKENSTEIN (2025), ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER, MATERIALISTS, THE SMASHING MACHINE, THE LONG WALK, PREDATORS and of course some other horror movies we've been watching this October such as THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH, RAISING CANE, POLTERGEIST 2, MARTIN, WOMAN IN BLACK, ASYLUM, THE SIGNALMAN, GHOSTWATCH, and WOLF GUY. Ben also watched LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR for Diane Keaton, RIP!We return next week with the much maligned sequel, just a hop across the pond or a drive in the chunnel to beautiful Paris. Does AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN PARIS have the same delicate balance of comedy and horror as its predecessor or does it suck ass? I'm sure you've already figured out the answer for yourself.Follow us @thefranchisees on Instagram and Twitter and email us at thefranchiseespod@gmail.com
Discussion Opening October 17th and running through November 1st at the Old Church Theatre in Okotoks, Dewdney Players presents The Woman in Black, directed by Claire Hoyer. Kyle sits down with Claire and performer Paarth Kelkar to discuss how important this play is to Claire, how hard it is to direct for the first time, and the differences between live theatre and film. Tickets: https://www.showpass.com/s/events/Okotoks,AB,Canada/?search_string=dewdney About the Show: The framework of this spine-tingler is unusual: a retired lawyer hires an actor to tutor him in recounting to family and friends a story that has long troubled him concerning events that transpired when he attended the funeral of an elderly recluse. There, he caught sight of the woman in black, the mere mention of whom terrifies the locals, for she is a spectre who haunts the neighbourhood. Terrible things occur when anyone sees her! The lawyer has invited some friends and family to watch as he and the actor recreate the events of that dark and stormy night. A classic of the genre. The Woman in Black, by Stephen Mallatratt and Susan Hill, based on the novel by Susan Hill, presented by special arrangement with Concord Theatricals *Warning: Implied child death, strobe lights, loud noises, and potentially frightening moments.

In the quiet elegance of 1880s Cheltenham, a spectral presence stirred unease in a grand old family mansion in the centre of town. The ghost—described as a tall, veiled woman in black—appeared repeatedly to the daughters of the Despard family, moving silently through the house and vanishing without trace. Witnessed by multiple family members over several years, the haunting became one of Britain's most documented supernatural cases, thanks to the efforts of the newly founded Society for Psychical Research, who jumped at the chance to study a haunted house, first hand. Arthur Kipps is recently widowed and grieving the loss of his wife when he is sent to a remote village to put a deceased eccentric's affairs in order. Soon after his arrival, it becomes clear that the villagers are hiding a terrible secret. Kipps discovers that his late client's house is haunted by the spirit of a woman who is trying to find someone and something she lost, and that no one -- not even the children -- is safe from her terrible wrath. It's time for one of those huge episodes. Well, it's a three parter anyways. 2012 was for me, a little bit of a slacker for horror movies, some would say that not enough time has elapsed to make this assessment, I say, shnozwaddle! In 1971, women in Brazil were banned from taking part in organised football. Lea Campos had spent most of her life being steered away from the game, but the fascination had never left her, and she began to wonder if she could get involved by becoming a referee. However, future Fifa president Joao Havelange was determined to maintain the status quo. With this seemingly insurmountable obstacle in her path, Lea decided to appeal to one of the few men more powerful than Havelange: General Emilio Garrastazu Medici, Brazil's brutal military dictator. “Don't go chasing shadows, Arthur.”Adapting a Classic Ghost Story for the Big ScreenThe Woman in Black, based on Susan Hill's 1983 novel of the same name, has been adapted for the stage, television, and radio. In 2012, James Watkins directed a feature film version starring Daniel Radcliffe in his first major role since the Harry Potter series. With a talented team behind the camera and a compelling lead actor, The Woman in Black aimed to bring a classic ghost story to life for a new generation. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue the 2013 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards Best Actor Nominees series with a conversation about The Woman in Black.Radcliffe's Post-Potter Performance and the Film's Ghostly AtmosphereIn our discussion, we explore Daniel Radcliffe's performance as Arthur Kipps, a young lawyer grappling with grief and tasked with settling the estate of the mysterious Alice Drablow. Radcliffe's portrayal marks a significant departure from his iconic role as Harry Potter, showcasing his range as an actor. We also delve into the film's effective use of atmosphere, from the eerie Eel Marsh House and causeway leading to it to the unsettling appearances of the titular specter. However, we note that the reliance on jump scares and horror tropes may detract from the overall impact of the story.Other Topics CoveredThe differences between the novel, previous adaptations, and the 2012 filmThe film's exploration of grief and lossThe effectiveness of the period setting and production designThe use of children in peril as a horror elementThe Woman in Black offers a haunting tale of a vengeful spirit and the devastating impact of loss. While the film may lean heavily on familiar ghost story conventions, it succeeds in creating a chilling atmosphere and showcasing Daniel Radcliffe's post-Potter acting chops. Despite some reservations about the ending and the reliance on jump scares, The Woman in Black remains a solid entry in the gothic horror genre and a testament to the enduring power of Susan Hill's original novel.
