Michael and David speak of many things ... part of the reason they always seem to have so much fun. Among other things Michael speaks of how he manages to invite "the muses" and keeps his art both open and discreet at the same time. He also speaks of his work as musical composer for the brand new Disney series, Star Wars: The Acolyte. I always have speaking with Michael: our times always feel rich and multi-dimensional.2023 Pulitzer Prize-winning and Emmy- and Grammy-nominated composer Michael Abels is best known for his genre-defying scores for the Jordan Peele films GET OUT, US and NOPE. The score for US won a World Soundtrack Award, the Jerry Goldsmith Award, a Critics Choice nomination, multiple critics awards, and was named “Score of the Decade” by The Wrap. Both US and NOPE were shortlisted for the Oscar for Best Original Score. In 2022, Abels' music was honored by the Vancouver International Film Festival, the Middleburg Film Festival, and the Museum of the Moving Image. NOPE was awarded Best Score for a Studio Film by the Society of Composers & Lyricists. Other recent projects include the films BAD EDUCATION, NIGHTBOOKS, and the docu-series ALLEN v. FARROW. Current releases include CHEVALIER (Toronto Intl Film Festival) and LANDSCAPE WITH INVISIBLE HAND (Sundance 2022), his second collaboration with director Cory Finley. Upcoming projects include THE BURIAL (Amazon), and a series for Disney Plus.Abels' creative output also includes many concert works, including the choral song cycle AT WAR WITH OURSELVES for the Kronos Quartet, the Grammy-nominated ISOLATION VARIATION for Hilary Hahn, and OMAR, an opera co-composed with Grammy-winning recording artist Rhiannon Giddens. The New York Times named OMAR one of the 10 Best Classical Performances of 2022 and said, “What Giddens and Abels created is an ideal of American sound, an inheritor of the Gershwins' “Porgy and Bess” but more honest to its subject matter, conjuring folk music, spirituals, Islamic prayer and more, woven together with a compelling true story that transcends documentary.”Abels other concert works have been performed by the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, the Los Angeles Master Chorale and many others. Some of these pieces are available on the Cedille label, including DELIGHTS & DANCES, GLOBAL WARMING and WINGED CREATURES. Recent commissions include EMERGE for the National Symphony and Detroit Symphony, and a guitar concerto BORDERS for Grammy-nominated artist Mak Grgic.Abels is co-founder of the Composers Diversity Collective, an advocacy group to increase visibility of composers of color in film, gaming and streaming media.https://michaelabels.com/

Asad Manzoor Asad spearheads content creation for Pixomondo's Virtual Production division, squeezing feature-quality imagery out of Unreal Engine. Recently, he has delivered such titles as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Halo, Nightbooks, and the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender. There is much to be learned from stories, whether they feature ghosts, witches, or monsters, even when they scare us. It is the lessons learned in the face of darkness that make supernatural stories important for young readers. And, it is telling, that stories of ghosts and graveyards stay with us. They might cause us a bit of grief, but when we face them, we face ourselves, our fears, and our histories, and in confronting them we learn collaboration, problem-solving, empathy, and companionship. In this episode, we dredge up some Halloween spirit and examine our favorite graveyards and the ghosts that haunt them. J.A. White and Chantel Acevedo join the Queen of Tween Screams, Mary Downing Hahn to appreciate her supernatural classic, Wait Till Helen Comes. A self-proclaimed scaredy cat, Mary shares how the dysfunction of the family at the center of her book served to create an opening for a ghost to entice itself into a renewed existence. Mary, J.A., and Chantel unearth the dark secrets and histories of villains and ghastly beings to help readers understand that whatever haunts their nightmares just may hold an important lesson. [1:58] Mary shares the frightful churchyard revelation that became/inspired Wait Till Helen Comes. [4:01] Chantel reflects on how Mary succinctly portrays the complex yet simple way many children think about death. [6:51] J.A. White believes the supernatural elements of Wait Till Helen Comes only add to the existing tension of the underlying family drama. [7:38] Mary shares how writing about a blended family adds conflict and makes her story relatable to young readers. [11:34] In The Curse of Spectacle Key, Chantel's young characters are encouraged to feel free from the pressures of growing up and that loving and being loved is enough. [16:30] J.A. White loves the idea of budding young authors identifying with the plight of Alex from Nightbooks, and Gravebooks. [19:46] In their books, Mary, Chantel, and J.A. all explore the lurking pasts of their villains and how that history shapes their fears and actions. [21:21] In The Curse at Spectacle Key, the main character Frank has a mission to break the curse of the island and expose the hidden history of orphaned ghosts. [25:27] Mary recalls the many different responses she has received about Wait Till Helen Comes from 1986 when supernatural books were a point of debate. On this week's episode of Unleashing YOUR Great Work, we get a behind-the-scenes look into the fantasy worlds created by author JA White, a novelist who writes creepy books for kids. 5th grade teacher and Award-winning author of “The Thickety”, “Archimancy” (the first novel in The Shadow Series), and “The Nightbooks” (now a top 10 Netflix film produced by one of his childhood heroes, Sam Raimi), JA White tells us more about why his work makes him feel “shiny inside”. From sneaking off to his childhood basement to read creepy books, since childhood books he claims “weren't scary enough”, to having a digital billboard in Times Square, White takes us on his epic journey of the Great Work that he has slowly discovered within his writing career. He believes whole-heartedly that “There is no such thing as wasted writing”, a motto he has clung to since his first two novels never came to fruition, one of which being completely erased off of a floppy disc (anyone born after the year 2000 will have to google what a “floppy disc” is…you'll be shocked). As you traverse this episode, you'll hear the excitement I have interviewing him as he reveals the ins-and-outs about creating Great Work in his own writing, and the struggles, obstacles, and self-doubts that come along with letting the book tell YOU what to write. Join us as we discuss: 02:01 Your work should make you feel shiny inside, and a part of the shininess comes from the suffering that goes into it. 03:25 JA White's great work.04:36 JA's short story is one of the first movies that was filmed during the pandemic.07:31 Delegate - Letting people who are good at what they do, do their thing.10:33 JA's sad first novel stories. 11:42 The book called Queens Nightmares. 13:34 How JA got a call from an editor who was at Disney World.15:41 Why outlines don't work for JA.21:53 Writing is just figuring out what you should not tell.22:54 JA's hardships in writing his books.26:53 The people that JA drew the most inspiration from.29:17 How has the reception been for these creepy books for kids? There's nothing like getting lost in a good scary story, so it's apt that we're closing out Halloween with White's book about a witch who lures children into a magical apartment and makes them tell her horrifying tales. It'll be evident very quickly that we're quite taken with the character development, the scope and the speedy pace of the book! The more action-oriented film is also effective, though we *do* have a few quibbles (the plant nursery scene doesn't hold a candle to its book counterpart and we prefer the book's "shared custody" ending). The casting of Krysten Ritter, her Clueless-style costuming is inspired and the witch's candy-facial prosthetics are all spot-on perfection, though. Overall this is a really solid combo!Wanna connect with the show? Casper is a friendly ghost with a sad-as-hell backstory. Plus, maybe an uncomfortable obsession with Christina Ricci? The live-action "Casper" is notable for being the first movie with a CGI lead, and thankfully, the ghost-like effects here were made purposefully cartoonish rather than photo-realistic. That'd be weird and awkward, but don't worry; "Casper" is weird and awkward enough without shoddy special effects. Bill Pullman plays a ghost therapist still reeling from the death of his wife. In fact, he seems like a bit of a quack, because he's totally dismissive-then-shocked once his daughter Kat (Ricci) first interacts with Casper. We also have three disgusting Uncle ghosts who can (sorta) eat food, and also possess human bodies then make them look like Clint Eastwood and Rodney Dangerfield. Did we mention this movie was weird? Old Millennials Tyler and Angela try to dissect the various "rules" of haunting and unfinished business in this movie and wonder how much time Casper spends at the Farmer's Market each week. We try to figure out the bizarre ghost-to-human machine, as well as why the movie spends so much time with a villain that has so little to do with the actual plot. Plus we get "Ghost Pullman," everybody's least-favorite Ghostbuster, a play-by-play analysis of a hilarious "Hard Copy"-esque news segment, an explanation of Jennifer's arc as Brad's boyfriend on "Home Improvement," and the very awkward climactic scene in which a ghost with the voice of a little boy turns into a 13-year-old Devon Sawa. Suddenly that "Can I keep you?" line sounds super creepy. LET'S TALK: Daniel was tasked with finding a not-so-scary horror movie to watch with friends. So, he ventured into the Netflix unknown to watch Nightbooks. Surprised by it's balance between family-friendly and outright-scary sequences, Daniel couldn't help but jump behind a microphone and share his thoughts on this wildly strange kids horror flick. Then, Melvin talks about other kid/teen horror flicks that are fun for the whole family, or simply hit other demographics among youth and teens that he feels may be fun to explore during the Halloween season. Right up front, y'all: This one has major spoilers. To date this is probably the newest movie we've watched. Altogether we really enjoyed ourselves and it's really early in the morning right now so my brain is still too tired to come up with something clever. There is a naked, invisible cat in this one if that cranks your gears at all. Get your best blanket and your smoothest hand cream out because this is our most OLD MAN EPISODE yet. We're going positively geriatric for Cry Macho, Clint Eastwood's supposed "final" on-screen appearance.
