They say all good things must come to an end, "Hammerland" is no exception. But not quite yet!Ian and AC still have another terrifying year ahead as they wind down their half-decade mission to explore all the weird, chilling corners of the Hammer Films universe.Today, they look at 1960's offbeat thriller, The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll! Paul Massie stars as the titular doctor whose obsession with the duality of human nature drives him to unleash a dashingly handsome, psychotic id named Edward Hyde. What sets Terence Fisher's adaptation apart from many others is the emphasis on Hyde's mind games, as he manipulates, seduces, and murders his way through Jekyll's social circle. In this spoilerific review, Ian and AC talk about screenwriter Wolf Mankowitz's bold take on the Robert Louis Stevenson novel, and how it differs from previous stabs at the material.

HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST has officially begun and last year we tackled some Hammer Horror starring ( mostly) Christopher Lee. This year, every Wednesday, we're rocking even more Hammer Horror movies with another actor that will (mostly) appear. We're talking about Mr. Funtimes himself, Oliver Reed. Today we discuss an emotional Oliver Reed performance in the 1961 film “THE CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF” directed by the prolific Terence Fisher and also starring Clifford Evans, Yvonne Roman & Catherine Feller. A young boy, whose conception is from a sexual assault, is born on Christmas Day. Apparently anybody who is born on this day, that isn't Jesus, is cursed. If that's not sad enough his mother dies after going through labor. A kind man and his housekeeper raise the boy as his own. A good kid is given a chance but fate says “fuck them kids” because the man's feral curse is bigger than any kindness. Actual wolves are easier to tame than this poor Werewolf who becomes a serial killer every full moon by no fault of the man inside. Our first of three werewolf features this month and they're all pretty much tragedies. A DEAD WOMAN WITH THE SOUL OF A MAN! A MURDEROUS MAN WHO CAN TRANSFORM INTO A WOMAN! PROBABLY JUST A COINCIDENCE!   Have you ever noticed that Hammer Studios made two horror films that work as trans allegories? Well, technically three, but I forgot about one of them. Anyway, I've been curious for a while as to what an actual trans person might think of Terence Fisher's Frankenstein Created Woman (1967) and Roy Ward Baker's Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde (1971), so I invited back my friend and the co-host of the Defend Your Trash Movie podcast, Luana Saitta, in order to pick her brain (Frankenstein-related wordplay intended).   This was originally going to be a look at multiple horror movies with a trans/genderqueer slant, but we ultimately had more than enough to talk about with just these two films. Are they really trans allegories? Have they aged well? Are they good outside of the allegory? I hope you agree, enjoy this angle on a couple of Hammer classics, and have a happy Halloween season!   00:00 – Intro 13:55 – Frankenstein Created Woman (and other Hammer Frankenstein movies)  50:32 – Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde (and other Hyde and Jack the Ripper movies) 1:42:26 – Outro and sections from Luana's ‘trans canon'   If you are in a position to make the world a better place, please consider the following fundraisers: Trans Lifeline: https://translifeline.org/ Hope Mill Inc's Hurricane Relief:  https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-hope-mill-incs-hurricane-relief Florida Disaster Fund (PayPal):  https://www.paypal.com/fundraiser/119147482333313104/charity/1521272 Palestine Children's Relief Fund:  https://pcrf1.app.neoncrm.com/forms/gaza-relief

We return to Hammer Productions with Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell, filmed at Elstree Studios in 1972. It marked the final chapter in the Hammer Frankenstein saga and director Terence Fisher's last film. The Film Features: Peter Cushing in his sixth and final portrayal of Baron Victor Frankenstein, a part he originated in 1957's The Curse of Frankenstein. Despite being 59 and apparently in poor health when he made this film, Cushing still insisted on performing a stunt requiring him to leap from a tabletop onto the hulking creature's back, spinning wildly in circles to subdue the monster gone amok with a sedative. Shane Briant as Dr. Simon Helder, best known for his four Hammer appearances, including this film and Demons of the Mind, Straight on Till Morning, and Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter (coming soon from General Witchfinders). He reprised the role of Simon Helder years later in the film Sherlock Holmes vs. Frankenstein. Madeline Smith as Sarah "Angel" Klauss. Also seen in Hammer's The Vampire Lovers, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Tam-Lin, and Theatre of Blood, she went on to become the first Bond girl of the Roger Moore era, Miss Caruso, in the post-opening titles sequence of Live and Let Die (infamous for the scene where Bond unzips her dress with a magnetic wristwatch). After taking a break from acting to raise her daughter, she is still working now at the age of 74, recently appearing in Mark Gatiss's The Amazing Mr. Blunden. And of course, the main event... the feature creature... we have Dave ("Dave Prowse IS Darth Vader") Prowse as the Creature / Herr Schneider. Actor, bodybuilder, and strongman Dave Prowse carved a unique path in film history. He's best known for portraying Darth Vader (voiced by American actor James Earl Jones) in the original Star Wars trilogy. However, his career stretched far beyond that iconic role. He was a familiar face in the UK as the Green Cross Man, promoting road safety for children. However, in a recurring snub to the beautiful West Country accent, the first two adverts in the series had Prowse's voice dubbed by another actor. Thankfully, he appeared using his own voice in the third advert. Dave won the British heavyweight weightlifting championship for three consecutive years (1962-1964). Leading him to compete for England in the 1962 Commonwealth Games. During his bodybuilding training, he befriended future action stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno. His role as the manservant in Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film, "A Clockwork Orange," caught the eye of Star Wars director George Lucas, which led him to the defining role of Darth Vader. Throughout his film and TV career, Prowse was often typecast with parts such as the circus strongman in Vampire Circus, a Minotaur in (Doctor Who Klaxon)'The Time Monster,' and an android named Coppin in The Tomorrow People.  He supposedly came close to iconic roles, claiming to have nearly landed the part of Jaws in James Bond and being considered for Conan the Barbarian before those parts went to other actors. We are told that Prowse lobbied for the role of Superman in Richard Donner's 1978 film. In a television interview, he recounted his response to being told "we've found our Superman" with a simple "Thank you very much," only to then learn Christopher Reeve had been chosen and Prowse would be his trainer. Finally, it's worth noting that David Prowse made his second appearance as a Frankenstein laboratory creation in this film, his first being in The Horror of Frankenstein (uncredited cameo in 1967's Casino Royale aside). He holds the distinction of being the only actor to play a Hammer Frankenstein's monster more than once. Get bonus content on PatreonSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. "Dracula the Damned" is a 1960 British supernatural horror film produced by Hammer Film Productions starring ‘Big' Christopher Lee… Scratch that…Rather, the original sequel to the first Hammer Dracula film was cancelled without explanation, although Christopher Lee's decision not to return due to fear of typecasting probably led to The Brides of Dracula taking its place. #BigChrisLee did return five years later, however, when he starred in Dracula, Prince of Darkness. The Brides of Dracula is a 1960 British supernatural horror film produced by Hammer Film Productions. Directed by Terence Fisher, the film stars Peter Cushing, David Peel (who wore lifts in his shoes to make him the same height as actor Peter Cushing in the film. Peel, according to his bio at the time, was 5 foot 10. Cushing was six feet tall. To make his vampire look distinguishable from Christopher Lee's, Peel wore a full blonde hairpiece), Yvonne Monlaur, Andrée Melly, Miles Malleson (the hearse driver in the Ealing chiller compendium Dead of Night), Martita Hunt (known for her rich cluster of queens, dowagers, shrews, and evildoers—but it was her brilliant performance as the mad, reclusive Miss Havisham in the classic Great Expectations that earned her international recognition), and Freda Jackson (also an alumna of Great Expectations). Although, the character of Count Dracula does not appear in the film, and is instead mentioned only twice. After the success of Dracula, Hammer commissioned Jimmy Sangster to write a sequel titled Disciple of Dracula, about an acolyte of the vampire, with Count Dracula himself only making a cameo appearance. Sangster's script was rewritten by Peter Bryan to remove references to Dracula, while adding the character of Van Helsing. The screenplay was then further revised by Edward Percy. Filming began on January 16, 1960, at Bray Studios, and the film premiered at the Odeon Marble Arch on July 6. It was distributed theatrically on a double bill with The Leech Woman. The ending was originally planned to have the vampires destroyed by a swarm of bats, but this proved too expensive to stage and shoot, and was also vetoed by Peter Cushing, who did not think his character would perform the black magic required to summon the bats. However, the idea was recycled three years later for the climax of Hammer's The Kiss of the Vampire. The prop department put a lot of effort into making a realistic model bat, but it was lost and had to be replaced on short notice. This explains the unconvincing model bat in the movie. The front doors of Oakely Court served as the main entrance to Meinster Castle. We're returning for our penultimate Hammer Films Dracula feature this month and we aren't with Terence Fisher this week, instead we check out an early director work by the acclaimed cinematogrpaher, Freddie Francis. Last we saw Dracula, his sad-ass fell into some ice. How does he get out of that pickle? Well, a sadder-ass priest slips on some rocks right outside of the castle and bleeds into cracks in the ice which happens to be right over Dracula's mouth. That's more than enough to bring our most tragic fuckboy back into the fold. We're going on about Hammer Film's third Christopher Lee Dracula portrayal in 1968's “DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE”. Dracula is definitely looking for love and he's found the right girl, but he will have to contend with her Monsignor Uncle and her hunky atheist boyfriend. Will Atheist Paul's experience in dealing with Dracula lead him to to understand that a lifetime of guilt and self loathing is the way to go? Dracula actually might be Catholic if you think about it. He fears the faith just as those within it do. “Please Hammer, don't hurt ‘em”. That line is from an M.C. Hammer song. I typed it because every Monday for HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST we are discussing a Hammer Films vampire classic and since that film company is called “Hammer” and then you got the musician “M.C. Hammer”, I just thought that would be an interesting thing to type but it's not. I'm sorry. It's grasping. Another thing I wish was grasping are these Vampire vixens at my penis after they've been turned. Nothing like the glow-up that vampirism provides courtesy of one of cinema's saddest ever fuckboys. Christopher Lee returns to the role of Dracula in Terence Fisher's “DRACULA: PRINCE OF DARKNESS” from 1966. Eight years since Lee last helmed the role and he does so with zero words and with intensely forlorn expressions. Not to be confused with the John Carpenter film “Prince of Darkness” that we discussed last week and is available to hear now. We're continuing our weekly vintage reviews of some Hammer Horror of the vampiric kind and we miss out on Christopher Lee's Dracula this week because, well, he died at the the of “Horror of Dracula” but his cult lives on as Peter Cushing's Van Helsing comes across a strange case of a weird little Baron and his mother who keeps him chained up until a little French hottie sets him free. The Baron Meister is a vampire, of course, and he's got a couple of hungry baddies our there under his thrall. Terence Fisher directs another in “The Brides of Dracula” from 1960 and Christopher Lee wouldn't return to his role for another six years. The Baron is a bit of a twerp. I don't think Dracula would respect his game. Dracula would have never gotten caught in the shadow of a windmill cross. The character of Greta is amazing, though. Peter Cushing stays right even if the movie gets strange. Peter Cushing. More “Cushing” for the pushing, amiright?
