In this episode, JF and Phil examine the myth of the vampire through the lens of Robert Eggers' latest film, Nosferatu, a reimagining of F. W. Murnau's German Expressionist masterpiece. Topics covered include the nature of vampires, the symbolism of evil, the implicit theology of Eggers' film (compared with that of Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula), the need for shadow work, as well as the power of real introspection and self-sacrifice. Dracula: Dead and Loving it Man, comedy's are hard to cover. We tried really hard not to devolve into just repeating lines that cracked us up. When I say tried I mean we had the intention and did it anyways. Film #3 for the Month of Chaos was a welcome surprise as we had the pleasure to see Mel Brooks' Dracula: Dead and Loving it. Admittedly, this is not Mel's best film but it's still Mel Brooks and we all howled with laughter a number of time. The surprise of the show is Nate's admission that Leslie Neilson is "his Dracula" much like Connery is your favorite Bond or MosuGoji is your favorite Godzilla suit. We also, hee hee, GUSH about one of the funniest scenes in cinema history. Go listen to find out what that is but if you've seen the film you can probably guess.

Ryan Sim and Mitch McBeaudry join Jimmy to figure out if Leslie Neilen is a great comedian or someone who just got lucky a couple times and coasted on that career ever afterwards. Ryan Sinm says he was a natural comedian and 1988's The Naked Gun proves it. Mitch says no, just look at 1995's Dracula: Dead and Loving It. Somewhere's along the way Mel Brooks gets bashed.
When it comes to comedy movies that parody the stories we already know, few do it better than Mel Brooks. Throw in the comedic genius of Leslie Nielsen and you can already hear the laughs emitting from the movie theater. Or, do you? It's time to find out as we attempt to prove that Dracula: Dead And Loving It is not that bad. www.notthatbadcast.com Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/notthatbadcast Social Media - @notthatbadcast (X, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky, Spoutible) Learn more about your ad choices. Join us for a captivating discussion of classic horror auteur Tod Browning with George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive, and esteemed film historians, Steve Haberman and Constantine Nasr. Their 20-year-long collaboration started with the DVD release of Mel Brooks' "Dracula: Dead and Loving It," and has now extended to creating an audio commentary for the upcoming horror/sci-fi film, "The Devil Doll" (1936). That's the jumping-off point for our discussion and appreciation of four of Tod Browning's films released for the first time on Blu-ray in October. This episode is also a testament to the importance of preserving and cherishing physical media, highlighted through the restoration of Browning's classic horror masterpiece, "Freaks" (1932), undertaken by the Criterion Collection in partnership with Warner Bros. You don't want to miss George Feltenstein's engaging story about the film master that was used in this restoration, and the fifty-year journey to return it to its rightful owner. We also dissect the artistry behind Browning's 'The Mystic' (1925) and 'The Unknown' (1927), and the wonderful work Criterion did in restoring and presenting these silent films.Lastly, we revisit the profound themes present in Browning's films, showcasing the darker aspects of human nature and crime. This episode is a celebration of classic horror cinema and a tribute to the artistry of director Tod Browning.Purchase links:THE DEVIL DOLL (1936) Blu-rayTod Brownings Sideshow Shockers: FREAKS, THEY UNKNOWN, THE MYSTIC Blu-rayThe Sitcom StudyFinding the truth and wisdom amidst the tropes and clichésListen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify The Extras Facebook pageThe Extras Twitter Warner Archive & Warner Bros Catalog GroupOtaku Media produces podcasts, behind-the-scenes extras, and media that connect creatives with their fans and businesses with their consumers. In part three of our look at Pokémon fan projects, here is the second part of this month's episode. This time, we take a closer look at the motivations behind fan projects and we get closer to the actual controversy behind this series and address whether Pokémon fan games and ROM hacks are legal. Topics discussed include: Reasons people develop fan projects and the discourse surrounding them, a whole bunch of amateur takes on intellectual property law, that time John Carmack made a Super Mario Bros. clone, and Andy Hunter's one-man show of Dracula: Dead and Loving It. Hello, fellow underdogs! We're back with Matt Belenky — film producer/film writer/film aficionado/Pittsburgh native — to discus one of the best Die Hard clone movies ever put to screen: Peter Hyams' 90's classic, Sudden Death. Matt recently celebrated Sudden Death's timeless charm and Pittsburghian ethos in the Pittsburgh Orbit article Terrorism in Overtime: Sudden Death Turns 25, and he fills us in on all the local details you'll want to hear: the casting of real-life Penguins broadcasting duo Mike Lange and Paul Steigerwald as themselves, the story being conceived by Karen Elise Baldwin (daughter of then-Penguins owner Howard Baldwin, who produced the film), and the strange circumstances in which the hockey game was filmed during the NHL lockout. We also talk about how well the film marries action genre tropes with the sports genre tropes, the fast clip at which the deaths pile up and the plotting skates along, whether or not this is Jean-Claude Van Damme's best or most iconic role, the savvy inclusion of the props/backrooms/corridors/interstices of the now-demolished Civic Arena, the hilarious culinary-themed kills (i.e., the death of the Pens mascot, Iceburgh, in an industrial-sized dishwasher), and the stunningly shot stunt work/action set pieces (i.e., the helicopter crashing into the Jumbotron). Oh, and to break the ice, we have a blast breaking down the entire slate of box office releases in late December 1995 (Waiting to Exhale, Grumpier Old Men, Nixon, Dracula: Dead & Loving It, Balto, Four Rooms, Tom & Huck, Cutthroat Island, etc...) — with each of us picking the one movie we'd choose to see if we had only enough allowance to buy a single ticket on opening weekend. Enjoy!

This week, John and Brian travel to Transylvania to visit the crypt of Count Dracula….well not quite, we actually visit 1995 and Dracula's crypt is full of Leslie Nielsen Naked Gun Jokes, Peter McNichol eating flies, and of course…an enema. We are talking about the horror parody from comedic master Mel Brooks, “Dracula Dead and Loving It.” A movie that feels like a weird sibling to 1974's Young Frankenstein; a parody of both the early 90's classic horror monster revival ushered in by 1992's Bram Stoker's Dracula and a comedic homage to Hammer Films. But unlike Young Frankenstein, this movie was panned by critics and marked the end of Mel Brooks line of parody films dating all the way back to the 70's. But is this movie really that awful? Happy Halloween, everyone! On this dim, sanguinary Night of Fright, in the year of our gored 2022, Chris does the unthinkable and voluntarily hosts a vampire movie episode. But this isn't just any vampire movie—in fact, according to Wikipedia, it's "currently the latest film" directed by 96-year-old comedy icon Mel Brooks! That's right, it's Leslie Nielsen vehicle Dracula: Dead and Loving It, co-starring Peter MacNicol, Amy Yasbeck, Steven Weber, and Mel himself. Prepare yourselves, folks, because few things are as spooooooky as an unfunny comedy!

Are you feeling suffocated by Victorian repressiveness? Don't try an enema. Just listen to this episode! "Dracula Dead and Loving It" was released in 1995 and stars Leslie Nielsen, Mel Brooks, Amy Yasbeck and Peter MacNicol

Dracula Dead and Loving It is a typical Mel Brooks movie. It's a spoof of Bram Stoker's Dracula that's light on plot, but full of goofy gags and childish humor. Unfortunately, it lacks the biting wit of most Brooks films. Despite the unending charms of comedy legend Leslie Nielsen, who portrays the titular Count, too many of the jokes simply do not land. Critics tend to agree. At 11% on Rotten Tomatoes with 37 reviews this is far from peak Brooks. Sure, there are subtle hints of his brilliance, but not enough to make it stand out. Hence why it also flopped, grossing a woeful $10.7 million on a budget of $30 million. Now, sit back, satiate your bloodlust with a Dark Truth Imperial Stout from Boulevard Brewing, and don't rely on Renfield! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt.
