Multiple studios have gotten entangled, Tom Cruise was once attached to star and James Cameron even became involved as a producer. Unknowable evils, cities of unnatural dread, and creatures so nasty they drive you insane, "A the Mountains of Madness" is a tale of isolated, snowy monstrousness. Hello! Welcome to another edition of the exclusive audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes. This episode is really personal for me, not only because Rupert Wainwright has been a good friend of mine for 25 years, but because Stigmata is the reason we met. While working on Divine Rites: The Story of Stigmata, a documentary about the film and the phenomenon, I wrote and pitched to Rupert a pilot script designed to be a spin-off of the film, using the Congregation of the Causes of Saints as a kind of X-Files show in which our hero would travel the world investigating mysteries and miracles. Although we didn't end up making the show, Rupert liked the script enough to give me a shot at writing a film for him, based on his own idea, which we almost got to make with Matthew McConaughey about 20 years ago, and we've been working on projects together ever since – and more importantly, we've enjoyed an enduring friendship which has outlasted our Dante-esque trudges through Development Hell. Revisiting Stigmata for its 25th anniversary, I was delighted to discover that the film really holds up, which is a testament both to Rupert's skill as a director and the casting of some very talented and committed actors, including Patricia Arquette, Gabriel Byrne, Jonathan Pryce and our mutual friend Rade Serbedzija. Massive thanks to Rupert for lending his time and his memories to our 40th episode. Comments? Feedback? Suggestions? Email David *at * Rogue-Commentary *dot* com or send us a tweet. We have lots of exciting episodes in the works, so if you like what you hear – or just the idea – please subscribe, and remember to rate us wherever you hear this podcast – it'll really help us to keep going. Oh, and follow us on X and/or Instagram to stay up-to-date on our forthcoming releases. Thanks for listening! A Synchronicity production, conceived and presented by David Hughes. Another big week on the podcast as we review Netflix's new dramedy KAOSand new cinema release Bookworm. We also argue over Fly me To The Moon. And then we explore Development Hell - those movies that have been worked on and reworked for years and years in the light of the most recent The Crow film being released - finally.
The Crow People once believed that when a franchise dies, a crow carries it to the land of the dead (direct to video). But sometimes, something so bad happens to a film series that a terrible sadness is carried with it and the franchise can't rest. The Crow is that franchise, and despite it languishing in Development Hell for nearly 20 years it has now been resurrected to shamble onto the screen once more. Caw, Caw, Bang! it's a new Crow film! Dion, Quinny and Jill are the revenants haunting this review, and in the post show they also talked about the following: Megalopolis: https://youtu.be/j9_nPeKnpfE?si=S7gYv-1b4FAJpXH6 Drag Race: https://youtu.be/cc9lK6UTduM?si=ElfBSegkEpLXAeb_ Tales of the TMNT: https://youtu.be/qZo7A_XBNeE?si=GonKFdfqah8FhN0U The Penguin: https://youtu.be/sfJG6IiA_s8?si=a3ZmlD2Q4h0hWHfb Mortal Kombat: https://youtu.be/NYH2sLid0Zc?si=iLejNmPei_5EAc1B Synopsis Soulmates Eric Draven and Shelly Webster are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. In 1986, Cameron Crowe, the film director, and Nancy Wilson, of the rock group Heart, got married. They honeymooned in a little cabin in the Pacific Northwest, and while they were there decided to write a musical, about Elvis as a cab driver in Seattle. They wrote and recorded demos of all the songs, and called it “Blue Seattle.” It became a lost masterpiece that never saw the light of day. In our Development Hell season finale, Cameron joins Malcolm to share the songs and tell the story behind “Blue Seattle” for the very first time.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today we're sharing two special conversations, featuring our friends at Revisionist History. First, Malcolm Gladwell joins Sam to discuss "Development Hell," a new series about the untold stories of Hollywood that never left the page (2:00). Then, we turn to Gladwell's recent sit-down with director M. Night Shyamalan (25:00). Before Shyamalan became a household name for his mind bending thrillers like “The Sixth Sense” and “Signs”, he was just a young screenwriter in love. And during those blissful early years of marriage he wrote a love story. The screenplay for “Labor of Love” sold right away, and over the next 30 years or so there would be numerous attempts to make it into a movie. There was a major studio, there were A-list directors, Shyamalan even found his perfect star. In this episode, M. Night Shyamalan reveals the script that haunts him. To hear the full series from Revisionist History, listen here. Between her big hits, “Monster” and “Wonder Woman”, Patty Jenkins wrote an R-rated fairy tale, starring a dog. She hoped that the dog would deliver such a great performance that the Academy would — for the first time — give the Best Actor award to an animal. The story was about a dog program in a prison, a perfect set-up for a story of both canine and human redemption, right? Wrong. That's the kind of story Hollywood loves, but not the kind of story Jenkins wanted to tell. Enter development hell.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Before Charles Randolph won an Oscar for his adaptation of “The Big Short”, he took a swing at a thornier adaptation, a memoir called “The Birthday Party.” It's the true story of a white man kidnapped by three young Black men. In his adaptation, Randolph chose not to write the action movie that producers had in mind, but to focus on the racial dynamics at play. And Hollywood wasn't having it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This is the story behind a biopic about a chimpanzee named Bubbles, sidekick to the King of Pop. Malcolm talks with the writer, Isaac Adamson, about the project's rise and fall. Netflix optioned the script, a director was attached, and then… everything fell apart. In the episode, Isaac reads from his 2015 Black List winning script, and he and Malcolm consider whether now is the time for “Bubbles.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Development Hell will return on Thursday with an all-new episode about a chimpanzee. In the meantime, here's a Hollywood-related episode from our friends at Talk Easy. Host Sam Fragoso talks with the New York Times critic Wesley Morris about all things Oscars, his career, and the state of the film industry. It's the mid-2000s, Malcolm and writer/producer Stephen Gaghan (“Traffic”, “Syriana”) are running around Hollywood pitching their scripted adaptation of Blink. This conversation starts with a failed vampire love story, takes a ride in Leonardo DiCaprio's Prius, before making an unexpectedly heartbreaking turn that leads Stephen to walk away from the project forever.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Gary Goldman was a writer on “Total Recall”, a Philip K. Dick adaptation directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Arnold Schwarzeneger. It was a big hit. So why do Gary and his writing partner, Angus Fletcher, have so much trouble selling another Philip K. Dick adaptation? They tell Malcolm that it all came down to a roller coaster ride of plot twists that even A-List action actors couldn't stomach, and an early attempt at AI that was too dumb to pick a smart script.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
