Field Sketches is a personal film that grew from Director/Writer/Producer Carl Bessai's filmmaking journey. After a life of making films, what matters most to a person? Carl, a long-time resident of Toronto now based in Vancouver, BC, sharing time between Toronto and Los Angeles, is thrilled to bring his twentieth film to Toronto. Nine of Carl's feature films have screened at TIFF, including Johnny, Lola, Emile, Unnatural & Accidental, Normal, Mothers & Daughters, Cole, Repeaters and Sisters & Brothers. Former TIFF programmer Steve Gravestock will be the talk-back host for the Q&A after the film. Field Sketches Toronto Theatrical Premiere at the Revue Cinema will screen on Wednesday, June 11th, 2025, at 6:45 PM with the cast and director in attendance. Peter (Vincent Gale), a middle-aged architect whose business and personal life are imploding, has been trying to return to his creative roots as an architect. His successful partnership with his college friend Bruce (David Cubitt) has left him feeling like he can no longer find the art in his creative practice. With nothing left to hold him in the city, Peter decides to move to his family farm and spend the winter in Saskatchewan. He soon discovers that pioneer life is much more than he bargained for. And the silence and loneliness play tricks on his imagination. Carl Bessai is a writer/director/producer/cinematographer based in Vancouver, BC, Toronto and Los Angeles, California. His feature films have appeared in numerous festivals, including Sundance, Berlin, and Toronto, have been released worldwide, and have won numerous critics' prizes, jury prizes, and film awards. He has directed some of the world's leading acting talent, including Sir Ian McKellen (Emile, Lord of the Rings, X-Men), Carrie Ann Moss (Normal, The Matrix Films), Bruce Greenwood (Rehearsal, Star Trek), Tantoo Cardinal (Mothers&Daughters, Dances with Wolves), and Bruce Dern (The Lears, Nebraska). Vincent Gale is known for his work on Van Helsing, X-Men Evolution, Watson, The Dragon Prince, Midnight Mass, Snowpiercer and Supernatural. Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

On the show today, one of our hosts watched a terribly reviewed rom-com on Netflix (just a little film starring Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron) and secretly loved it.So it got us thinking, what are the other movies that critics and fans alike agree are terrible that we still love to watch (even though we’ll never admit it out loud). From action movies, to horror flicks and romantic comedies with A-list stars these are all the terribly reviewed movies that we secretly love. ¡A disfrutar!

In our search for more knowledge about the horror genre, the films we love, and the people behind them, many horror fans began their journey with reference books. Long before the internet, these books served as stepping stones, introducing fans to films they had never heard of and offering deeper insight into the people behind the movies they already knew and loved. It was like opening doors for the first time—or pushing open ones that had only been slightly ajar—allowing us to explore and learn so much more. In this episode, we welcome author Bryan Senn to the show to discuss these essential reference books. — You durn foolWaves of hot lava washed down my throat, past my lungs, and hit my stomach like an acid avalanche.By day, Nick Sipe works as a mild-mannered IT manager for a Fortune 150 company. By night, he mostly recovers from the workday, but occasionally finds time to write. He enjoys writing Twilight Zone-style short stories, mostly horror and light sci-fi. Nick is currently shopping his debut novel, “Midnight Springs,” to literary agents. “Midnight Springs” is the first in a planned horror-Western series that sends classic monsters (think Frankenstein, Van Helsing, the Wolfman) to the Wild West to tangle with their American counterparts (think witches, the Headless Horseman, the Wendigo). Nick live in Gastonia, North Carolina. He is a member of Charlotte Writers Club.

Send us a textIn episode 104, we dive into the 2021 horror film Black as Night. This not-so-unique blend of supernatural horror and social commentary takes us deep into the heart of New Orleans, where a young girl must confront a terrifying vampire threat that lurks in the shadows. We'll discuss the film's themes of colorism, gentrification, and the coming-of-age throughline that has a hard time hitting the mark. Grab your garlic and stake, and tune in for a deep dive into a film that will leave you questioning what's lurking in the dark.Timestamps Negronomicon: 04:56Crit: 29:17Pause here to avoid plot spoilers!: 34:16 Podcaster's note:A video that Mami Wata Mayowa posted online gave me the language I was looking for when we recorded this episode. The trope with colorism is that dark-skinned women are jealous of light-skinned women. This underlying belief colored the conversation this film was trying to have into a weird coming-of-age story that didn't sit right with me. I have a hard time understanding the perspective of the film has and I think there were a lot of other elements in the story that made this theme seem shallow at best. xo, LaurenGems from E104Black as Night (2021)Cheers (1982, television series)The Twilight Zone (1959, television series)The Faculty (1998)Scream 7 (upcoming)Companion (2025)The Blackening (2023)Barbarian (2022)22 Jump Street (2014)Idle Hands (1999)The Devil Wear Prada 2 (upcoming)Moana 2 (2024)Moana (2016)Leprechaun 4: In Space (1996)Jason X (2021)Wolf Man (2025)Van Helsing (2004)28 Years Later (2025)The Last of Us (2023, television series)Fear Street trilogy (2021)Fear Street: Prom Queen (2025)Goosebumps (2023, television series)Goosebumps: The Vanishing (2025, television series)Goosebumps (1995, television series)The Nightmare Room (2001, television series)The Haunting Hour (2010, television series)Degrassi: The Next Generation (2001, television series)Squid Game (2021, television series)Virgin River (2019, television series)Locke & Key (2020 television series)Sinners (2025)Mickey 17 (2025)Black Panther (2018)Spongebob Squarepants (1997, animated television series)Courage the Cowardly Dog (1999, animated television series)The Monkey (2025)Longlegs (2024)Until Dawn (2025)Until Dawn (2015, video game)Black Christmas (2019)Black Christmas (1976)Happy Death Day (2016)Cabin in the Woods (2012)Annabelle: Creation (2017)Lights Out (2016)Shazam: Fury of the Gods (2023)Groundhog Day (1993)Vampires vs. the Bronx (2020)Chlorine Sky (Mahogany L. Continuing our creature feature vibes this week we're talking about Bram Stoker's Dracula, a movie that is truly mind blowing. We talk about creepy shadow work, Dracula's ability to turn into a bunch of different stuff, Van Helsing kicking ass, and the greatness of the 3 avenging boyfriends.
Vampire January Continues!! This week we explore the opulent, haunting world of Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992). Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, this gothic horror classic reimagines Dracula as a tragic, romantic antihero, blending lush visuals with timeless themes of love, loss, and the supernatural. We discuss Gary Oldman's unforgettable performance as the enigmatic Count Dracula, the film's groundbreaking practical effects, and its richly detailed production design. From Anthony Hopkins' eccentric Van Helsing to Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves' iconic (if occasionally divisive) performances, we examine the cast, storytelling, and Coppola's daring artistic choices. Does Bram Stoker's Dracula remain the definitive adaptation of Stoker's novel, or is it overshadowed by its own extravagance? Tune in as we dissect this enduring classic and its impact on the vampire genre. Today on Too Opinionated, we talk with actor Jeff Kober! His first appearance on the small screen was a non-billed role in the 1980s series V. Kober went on to supporting roles in the highly acclaimed Vietnam War drama China Beach and the short-lived, but now-cult horror series Kindred: The Embraced. Following these series, Kober has guested on some of the most popular television series of the day. They include Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, ER, 24, The Closer, General Hospital, Chicago Med, High Desert, Walker, Van Helsing, Big Sky, Bosch, Earth 2, Timeless, The Walking Dead, Sons of Anarchy, New Girl, Lost, NYPD Blue, Star Trek Enterprise, Star Trek Voyager, JAG, The Closer, X-Files, and Criminal Minds. Kober's big screen career began with the film Out of Bounds, in which he played the first of his signature nefarious characters - Roy Gaddis, a small-time drug dealer with murderous inclinations. This role led to more film opportunities in The First Power, Tank Girl (a comedic turn), Defining Maggie, World Without Waves, Sully, and the remake of The Hills Have Eyes 2, among others. Sorry we left you in the lurch for a couple weeks there, Spookies! Thankfully, we're back in full force with a new installment of Werewolf vs. Vampire Seasonal Depression Event (WWVVSDE). Another early-aughts monster movie featuring Kate Beckinsale, Underworld (2003) is treading some familiar territory — but unlike Van Helsing, this flick did manage to launch its own franchise. In fact, there are a whole bunch of movies and even video games centered around the ~Eternal War~ through the eras, but we thought we'd start at the beginning. On our latest episode, we're exploring the all-blue aesthetic, experimenting with wig work, and fawning over Michael Sheen as we uncover all of the various Twilight parallels.
