When Dynamite solicited the return of The Herculoids into the comics medium, I was immediately concerned. Oh no, who's writing it? It is such a beloved childhood property of mine. Who could do it justice? Then my fears were allayed when saw Tom Sniegoski was at the reins. Given his background working on other major properties like Hellboy and Vampirella with their own distinct and important legacies, I knew he'd be the perfect fit. I'd been meaning to catch up with Tom for quite some time now so this was the perfect opportunity to get him back on the show to dive into what turns out is a shared love of this weird old Hanna Barbera cartoon property. In the episode, Tom shares his childhood connection to it, the challenges of translating all these non-speaking creatures front and center in comic book form, and the collaboration process with artist Craig Rousseau to interpret the original designs of Alex Toth. We also carve out some time to hear about his other projects and how comics can engage new young readers, something I always seem to be bringing up lately. The Herculoids hits shelves this February. Make sure to call your shop and reserve a copy. That Mignola cover will move fast y'all. From the publisher Building on the success of the critically acclaimed and bestselling Space Ghost series, Dynamite Entertainment is proud to bring another beloved Hanna-Barbera classic to readers this February - The Herculoids! Hidden in the furthest reaches of space, the planet of Amzot is legendary for its fabled riches - and for the terrible fates that befall anybody who seeks to exploit them... Those who survive their encounters tell blood-chilling tales of horrific, imposing monsters that guard the mysterious world - yet the lure of its abundant resources is too great to resist. Raiders and pirates continue to come from across the galaxy, and there is only one force strong enough to stop their constant attacks - The Herculoids! But as strong as these defenders are, a recent battle may have pushed Amzot to its limits - and awakened a sleeping darkness within the planet itself! Written by TOM SNIEGOSKI (Vampirella, Hellboy) and drawn by CRAIG ROUSSEAU (Batman Beyond, Gotham Adventures), The Herculoids #1 features a wealth of covers from some of the galaxy's most talented artists, including FRANCESCO MATTINA, JOSEPH MICHAEL LINSNER, BJORN BARENDS, FELIPE MASSAFERA, and the legendary creator of Hellboy, MIKE MIGNOLA!

The man, the myth, the father of Shi: that's right, it's Billy Tucci! Billy and Shi crashed onto the comics scene in 1994, and they never looked back. For the first dozen years, it was all about the half-Japanese, naginata-wielding woman warrior and her solo and crossover adventures. And crossovers there were: with Avengelyne, Gen-13, Cyblade, Daredevil, Grifter, Vampirella, Lady Death, and Wolverine, just to name a few! Billy eventually branched out to other publishers, working on Heroes for Hire at Marvel, and Jonah Hex, Birds of Prey, Harley Quinn, and Sgt. Rock: The Lost Battalion for DC. Now, for her 30th anniversary, he's putting together the craziest Shi book yet, the multiverse-spanning Shi: Gatecrasher. You can still get Billy's latest, Rocketeer: Pavlichenko Special Art Edition, on Indiegogo here: https://igg.me/at/SHISECONDCOMING/x#/. ... Two New Super Natural Series On The Way! In this episode, your hosts, Chris Ryan, and Alex Simmons, are joined by the incredible New York Times bestselling author Tom Sniegoski and his extremely talented writing partner, Jeannine Acheson. Together, they dive into a treasure trove of fascinating insights, methods, and tips.  Their writings range from creating new tales for the VAMPIRELLA legacy to mystery horror tales about GRIM DEATH, the avatar of death, to Tom adapting the classic cartoon show THE HERCULOIDS into a new comic book series. Tom shares his uncontainable excitement for his latest project—writing for the iconic 1967 Hanna-Barbera cartoon "The Herculoids." He delves into his lifelong passion for these characters, his creative process, the logistics of these non-speaking monster characters, and the challenges of modernizing their stories. Louise Simonson   When people use the phrase, “triple threat,”  I always picture Louise Simonson. Not just a legendary writer on comics like X-Factor, New Mutants, and Superman, she created the wonderful Power Pack 40 years ago with artist June Brigman! As an editor, she guided the X-Men to new heights and wrangled the Warren line of magazines — Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella — when they., too, were at their height. One of the nicest people I've ever met, I am honored to be her pal and honored that she came in and had a chat with me!   This episode features an excerpt of "Misterioso" by Thelonious Monk

Thirst trap is the topic of today's Quackcast! What is a thirst trap? It's basically someone presenting themselves as very sexy in order to get attention for some sort of reason, rather than just happening to look attractive. So it's usually used for some sort of advertising purpose, to sell their OnlyFans, to get a date, or more conventional advertising. Today we're talking about it it terms of comics :) Years and years ago there ws an explosively popular comic on Drunk Duck called Craving Control. It was very well drawn and featured a sex, very busty women who would eat uncontrollably and get very fat and then slim down again quite suddenly. For some reason this was MASSIVELY interesting to people. The reason I mention it hear though is that their thumbnail pronominally featured a very boobular cleavage shot of the main character. Many of us creators on the site envied the popularity of this comic and chose to copy that thumbnail style. Suddenly there were all sorts of comics on the site being advertised with boob or butt thumbnails. Thirst traps everywhere! It started a fad on the site. People all suddenly re-learned the ancient lesson that “sex sells”. In our cast we expand this a bit to talk about some of the famous thirst trap comics that often don't deliver on the promise of their covers like Vampirella, along with Witchblade and Red Sonja. This was something that existed even before comics back with the old pulps. Artists like Margeret Brundage were famous for their scantily clad, busty women in compromising situations, which the stories within weren't nearly as racy. The of course we have “bodice-ripper” romance novels featuring women in tight corsets and men with bulging chests… Have you been guilty or at least tempted to use this tactic to promote your work? I know I have! Future topic: Benevolent sexism, also benevolent racism. This week Gunwallace was still unwell so I picked a sexy sounding past one to go along with the the topic today - Pep Squad - These girls are here to get you motivated! You can almost SEE the dance routine in your mind's eye, and believe me, it's pretty sexy… They've got some moves. The crowd roars as the pep squad performs, bumping, grinding and sliding on the stage. One of the pioneering women cartoonists of the 20th century, Trina Robbins was a founding member of the underground comix scene, using alternative press in New York and San Francisco to publish her work. Along the way, she designed Vampirella's costume, adapted various novels, and created Misty (an update of Millie the Model) for Marvel's Star Comics. She may be best known for her work with Wonder Woman, especially her The Legend of Wonder Woman mini-series (written by Kurt Busiek) and the graphic novel Wonder Woman: The Once and Future Story (with Colleen Doran). She's also a historian of women in cartooning, having written a number of books on the subject. Trina is a fascinating creator, and in this Oren Only interview, you'll see exactly why. _____________________If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Talk about an eclectic career! JayJay Jackson started out as a cartographer, drawing street maps in the days before GPS. She also did schematics and production design for various outfits, including Texas Instruments. Somehow, she parlayed this into a gig as a designer (and later art director) at Marvel Comics. She also colored comics and ads, including those for Spider-Man, Punisher, and Alien Legion. More importantly, JayJay met Jim Shooter there, and became an indispensable part of his subsequent ventures at Valiant, Defiant, and Broadway Comics. She even did some painting for Topps cards, including Universal Monsters, Vampirella, and Star Wars Galaxy.JayJay is now a freelance illustrator and writer, and you can follow her work at jayjayjackson.com or on Instagram @jayjayzee._____________________Dollar Bin Bandits is the official podcast of TwoMorrows Publishing.
