We have missed making these episodes for you all, but a lot was going on and so we needed to put the show on hiatus for a little while. This episode is all about faith, politics, and the intermingling of the two. How are you supposed to juggle your faith with your political beliefs? This may come as a surprise (or not), but the answer to that question is quite a bit more complicated and nuanced than what you or I may think upon first glance. There is a lot of grey area when it comes to politics, especially in the United States. We love to hear feedback and get tips on how to improve the show. Follow us on Instagram! @CullenW19 @trevor_gentry Show Notes: First, what is prayer? Let's make a definition that we can stick to.What can prayer do? Why is it necessary? Is prayer mostly a tool, like a telephone line straight to God?If God already knows what I am praying for, why do I even need to pray?Do I need to be in a special moment with God, or can I just prayer anywhere anytime? Is there any sort of real process that I need to go through?Kneeling vs not kneelingPraying inside my head vs. saying it out loudHow do we address the creator of the Universe, God? More casual or very formal? What is ok to pray about?Do I need to pray every day?Should I expect an answer?I've seen it be joked about before that sometimes a person may pray with a specific request in mind, let's say the healing of a person. But, then, then feel bad that they are only praying for that one person, and so the prayer slowly begins to open up until you are just praying for the healing of the entire world. What/who do we need to be praying for? Are we being selfish if we pray for only one thing? Sometimes, when I pray, it can be very emotional and I can feel God's presence with me. Sometimes, it feels as if i'm just saying things into the ether of the universe, and it's going nowhere. What can I do if I feel like God isn't giving me an answer? How can I even know if he IS giving me an answer? I know many people who keep a tradition of repeating the Lord's prayer often. Catholics do it every Sunday at mass. Is this something that should be important to us, or should it just be something that we keep in the back of our minds when it comes to a prayer template? Can you pray to somebody that isn't God?Many protestants think that it's heretical for Catholics to “pray” to the Saints. But, Catholics would say that the protestants just have the wrong idea of what is actually happening there (I don't want to spoil the exact reason until the recording).Mark 11:24 seems to say that we will get whatever we pray for. But, I pray for things all the time that I don't get. What gives? What could Jesus really be saying here that maybe doesn't come across right in translation?  Resources: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUFn8HU8rtU&t=52sMusic:good morning by Amine Maxwell https://soundcloud.com/aminemaxwellCreative Commons — Attribution 3.0 Unported  — CC BY 3.0Free Download / Stream: http://bit.ly/2vpruoYMusic promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/SQWFdnbzlgI

Now, He is preparing to start a new nation with them in the promised land, but they haven't arrived there yet. Starting with the 10 Commandments, God gives Israel 613 Laws to follow. Why?If any of the Israleites were to break any of the Laws, there was a sacrificial system also described in the Torah to make the people right with God again. Why do sins need to be atoned for? Why doesn't God just forgive wrongdoings simply because he can?Isaiah sins seemed to be forgiven without a sacrifice needed. And later, Jesus is seen forgiving sins all around Israel! Was the sacrificial system ever truly necessary?Christ says that he did not come to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it. But, in Acts it very much seems like the Law is made irrelevant, especially when it comes to eating kosher. This just seems like a massive departure from what we spend so much time reading about in the OT. God spent so much time giving the 613 Laws to the Israelites and enforcing them, why just seemingly throw them away, even though that's what he claims he isn't doing? What is really going on when he makes all the unclean animals clean in Acts 10?Why not just say “follow the Law to the best of your ability, but since Jesus has paid for your sins, you are forever forgiven and there is no need for animal sacrifices anymore”?The water seems muddied a bit now.If fulfilling the Law means that we aren't under it anymore, then isn't that the same as abolishing it? Why did Jesus draw a distinction there? Are we sinning if we break the OT Laws? Sometimes? How can we know?I've heard it said that since Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice, that that is the reason the Law has been made irrelevant. But, if breaking an OT Law is a sin, and we are willingly breaking the OT Law because Christ has paid for our mess ups. So, if that is the case, then does that mean we are doing exactly what we are warned to not do in Romans 6, which is to go on sinning simply because the price has been paid? How are we to treat the OT Laws? Do we just treat them as moral examples of a good way to live in that historical and cultural context? Or, do we need to take them more seriously than that? What role do they need to be playing in our lives, if any? Can we summarize our relationship to the Laws like this: Jesus fulfilled the Law. So, that means we are no longer bound to any specific Law, but rather need to take the morality behind them and instead apply that to our lives? Like loving/worshipping God, taking care of the poor and needy, etc.?

I didn't get to choose whether I was born a boy or girl, it just happened. So, why should I conform to these restrictions? Cullen will present some articles written by people who believe gender roles do more harm than good to a society. How can we respond to this, or is it simply a case of “you live how you choose and I'll just follow the Bible? There are several Bible verses that might be good to read on how each member of a family should act, and what their specific “roles” might entail. There are verses that say things like “In Christ there is no male or female, we are all one”. Does this go against gendered roles? If all people are equal, then do these roles make a husband and wife inherently unequal? What gender roles might be good for us to follow and what ones might we ignore?Men as church leaders.Does a female pastor mean that that church is going against what the Bible preaches? What kind of person is called to be a leader in the church? Is it only strong-willed manly men who can withstand any trouble? If not, then let's break down the different types of church leaders. If a man puts his family first, does that mean that he is neglecting others who may be hurting in the world? If men are called to both care for their families and also the world around us, how can we strike a healthy balance between these?Ex. Trevor, your daughter has been wanting a bicycle for a long time, and so you go to the store and spend $150 on a new bike for her birthday, did you just neglect a homeless person who could've used that money?Likewise, you spent an extra hour at work because there was a college student struggling with their faith and they've been wanting to talk to you, but that means that you and your wife don't get to watch the show you've been wanting to, and spending that time together. And posing some questions for the listeners to think about while listening. “What does it mean to ‘act like a man'” and “From the Bible's perspective, what does it mean to be a man?” Remember that when reading a verse like this to start, it doesn't matter if I am reading out of context. Because, the context of the verse is something we can discuss when going over that verse and/or others like it. Once intro is finished, Cullen will ask something like “What is masculinity and does the Bible present a portrait of the ideal manly man? Does the Bible conflict with your view of manliness? Some things to maybe think about: there are a lot of different men who play big roles throughout the story of the Bible. Some were great because they humbled themselves (Jesus), others were great because they were mighty warriors who slayed their enemies to protect Israel (King David). Why does the Bible seem to give praise to both types? Who are we supposed to becomeo  What about men who have a sort of identity crisis because they read these biblical stories, yet they are very different from those guys? More feminine (not an insult) guys, for example.Does the Bible support the idea of gendered roles, family and otherwise? Is it a good or bad thing to have roles that you are obligated to fill simply because of who you are? I didn't get to choose whether I was born a boy or girl, it just happened. So, why should I conform to these restrictions? There are many articles written by people who believe gender roles do more harm than good to a society. How can we respond to this, or is it simply a case of “you live how you choose and I'll just follow the Bible? There are several Bible verses that might be good to read on how each member of a family should act, and what their specific “roles” might entail. There are verses that say things like “In Christ there is no male or female, we are all one”. Does this go against gendered roles. If all people are equal, then do these roles make a husband and wife inherently unequal?Do fathers have to be the providers of the family? What if they are stay-at-home?I find that men often joke that it's their wives that “wear the pants” and are in charge of the household. Is that the wrong way to be thinking about family life? Having this discussion feels so archaic compared to our modern culture. It feels so ancient and out-of-touch.Saying “the man is the head of the household” almost feels.. Wrong.Scriptures to read and meditate on:1 Corinthians 16Ephesians 51 Timothy 2-3
