I looked at the test results again…looked back at the doctor. “So, you're telling me if I do the same amount of exercise as my younger brother, and eat the exact same food, I'll be 2 kilos heavier than him by the end of this year?” The doctor took his glasses off, cleaned them and looked up, slightly sheepishly… “That's the joy of getting old I'm afraid.” Well, bugger... The body has a hierarchy of needs. A hierarchy of things without which it will die. A lot of these we know about from birth. - We can go for years without exercise. - We can go for months without food. - We can go for about a week without sleep. - We can go for a few days without water. - We can go for a few minutes without oxygen. If we want to affect a system, the higher up the hierarchy we go the more control we can exert over that system. (Think about a river, the closer to the source you can divert it, the easier it is to divert and the greater effect you can have on its route). In todays episode I show you how to gain control over these systems. http://tantrumshow.com
Should you be breathing through your nose or your mouth? There's a lot of talk about the benefits of nose breathing but then you go to a Yoga class and they tell you to breath through your mouth… What gives? http://tantrumshow.com
Muscle is one of the chief determinants of how fast you will age. The older your muscles the faster you age. Today I'm going to show you how to keep your muscles young. Want more? Click here >>
Whenever I read a post on improving recovery they all seem to be talking about the same stuff: magnesium, compression garments, active recovery etc… And with good reason, they all work. But…what if we could use the bodies own natural systems but amplify them. In this short episode I tell you how.
There are tonnes of discussion online about HIIT vs Cardio after 40 and which you should be doing. Today I take a deeper dive focussing especially on which you should be doing as a kitesurfer. Grab you free copy of my latest book here: http://tantrum.surf/3bQtNWU
This is a video I've been on the fence about doing for years...on one hand it's a really important message, on the other it's quite a taboo subject and well, quite frankly, embarrassing. However however witnessed and experienced the destructive effect porn can have on people lives and by extension on their kitesurfing I decided just couldn't keep quiet. So if porn is something you use or you know someone who does, this video could be an eye opener...as the answer is a resounding YES...porn can definitely ruin your kiting. Every week I take a question asked in our group and dive into it in more detail, this week one of our members asked, "I've been reading a lot that it becomes much more difficult to build muscle after 40, why is that and what can I do to stop it?" So in this episode I dive into this in more detail and reveal why I believe this is mostly scaremongering and what you do to ensure you don't start to shed muscle after the BIG 4.0. Grab your free copy of my latest book packed full of secrets to ensure you keep building muscle easily after 40: http://tantrum.surf/3uhlHPD
The biggest problem we see on our camps is people just not being able to recover fast enough from day to day. So that by day 3 they're physical wrecks, totally unable to enjoy or take full advantage of the wind and kicking themselves as they sit on the beach watching others have all the fun. In this episode I cover some simple techniques to help you recover faster in between sessions so you can have a great kitesurf session, and then do the same the next day...and the next...and the next... What should I be eating before a session on the water to have maximum energy and be able to stay out as long as possible? A common enough question and one entire industries have been built on the back of. I break the surprising answer down in detail and explain why this is the case. Ask me your questions in our FREE online group: https://community.tantrumx.com
When most people try to improve as a kitesurfer...or in any sport for that matter...they have a tendency to focus on the technical stuff, the minutiae of how you do something, in kitesurfing this could be where you place your hands on the bar, how far down or upwind you direct the board etc... This type of knowledge has it's place, but there is something MUCH MORE powerful (and much simpler) which once you understand and are able to use it, will improve your kitesurfing instantly...no exaggeration! And it's especially important for those of us who have passed the BIG 40. I tell you exactly what it is and how to unleash it in this video. For most people reaching 40 signifies it's time to start dialling back those sports they love. Especially ones like kitesurfing which place a lot of strain on the body. This is not only tragic, it's totally unnecessary and counter productive to their health in general. In this workshop I guide you through how you can ensure you can not only continue the sports you love...but can improve at rates you never believed possible. One of the questions I get asked by people just starting their journey into kitesurfing is, “If I was learning to kitesurf again how would I do it?” Well over the years I've given this a rather large amount of thought…mainly so I could improve the way I teach and I've nailed it down to a few crucial elements which I consider essential if you are to learn in the fastest time possible with the least frustration. In this episode I go into them in order, starting right at the beginning. Check out our kitesurfing lessons: https://tantrum.surf/2SIPHmM

I have a mate and every time we go to the beach he has to spend 20 minutes stretching before he hits the water. Now he also expects me to launch his kite so inevitably I (being the kind and considerate chap I am) end up sitting through his impromptu Yoga session with gritted teeth waiting to get out on the water. At some point through his contortionist act he'll no doubt call out, “You should join me you know, you'll get injured out there if you're not careful.” My answer… “No thank you good sir.” (I swear I'm that polite!) Join us in the group and ask Sam your questions:: https://www.facebook.com/groups/tantr... Using line extensions properly can transform your kitesurfing, but most people don't really understand how they really work or what effect they have on the kite and it's characteristics. In this video I explaining how these simply things can make your life a LOT easier!
Join me on my journey on our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/tantrumkitesurf/ I've been kitesurfing and teaching kitesurfing now for 15 years and have a confession… I'm not actually that good a kitesurfer. As I've been teaching all the time, I've always been working when there was wind and after 9 hours at the beach teaching the last thing you feel like doing is going kiting, so I have never really progressed to the level I wanted...a source of constant shame for me! So a couple of things have changed this year and I have a bit more time so I have decided at the age of 38 to spend a year really seeing just how good a kiter I can become, with the eventual goal being to hit up some of the biggest, baddest waves on the planet. So where am I now? As I make this video this haven't been on the water for 8 months and am probably in the worst shape of my life. I'll be making a few videos detailing the backstory to this for those of you interested in the juicy details, but in a nut shell over the last few years I've faced quite a few health and lifestyle challenges, that have led to this current predicament. As a kiter I'm ok, I can do basic freestyle stuff and can hold my own in small waves but for someone who has lived in Tarifa for 12 years…I'm AWFUL. Now those who have been following me for a while will note I actually tried this before…but got interrupted by bad health…again more on this in the backstory. So the plan is to create a diary journaling all the different things I do both on and off the water over the next year and to be your kitesurf case study. The idea being to give you a toolbox of things that work which you can use to master this awesome sport. For the full low down check out this video:
What effect do the rails (the edges) of your board have on your riding? Why are they shaped differently? How can the rails of your board affect your kiting? Just some of the questions I answer in this video. The link I mention: Ride Upwind in 30 Days: https://go.tantrumkitesurf.com/vsl
Time and again I have seen that there is 1 variable that matters more than any other when it comes to how good a kitesurfer you become and how quickly you progress. It's not how much you know... It's not how many videos you watch or books you read... It's not how much time you spend studying... It's something totally different and totally under your control...and you are controlling it every day whether you pay attention to it or not. The link I mention: https://go.tantrumkitesurf.com/vsl

Buying a kite is an incredibly difficult decision for most. Things are not made any easier by the fact that manufacturers deliberately describe them in generic language making it sound as if every kite does EVERYTHING well. In this episode I speak to Mike Birt of KTwo Distribution, one of the most knowledgeable chaps I know when it comes to kite design and the features you should be looking for in your next kite. In this episode we cover a HUGE amount including: The defining factor in ANY kite that will determine if it's the right kite for you Should you be sharing a kite with your partner? What you should be looking for in your kite. And a heck of a lot more, in fairness I learnt a LOT in this talk and I imagine you will to. Knock weeks of your time to learn to kitesurf: https://go.tantrumkitesurf.com/vsl In this months Q & A session I answer the following questions: Nick: 0:13 - For 100kg rider what sort of board would you recommend? Elisha: 2:08 - For some reason on my weak side when I waterstart I cant get the kite into the window and instead of diving forward is dives on the edge of the window and pulls me sideways instead of to the front, not sure what i'm doing different? Ben: 10:43 - In light winds after the water start the kite often hangs around 2 o clock and does not catch the wind so I fall back In the water. All the other guys are ok even with smaller kites so it's a bit frustrating :) If you want to ask me your question head over to this page and either register for the call or leave me your message: https://www.tantrumkitesurf.com/question/

There is a load of new science coming out at the moment that points to a much smarter way to improve our kitesurfing performance. Scientists have realised that we have 2 brains (well kind of…it's a good way of thinking about it). 1 of these brains is blooming amazing at kitesurfing, (you we're born with this brain, ready to go, but probably don't know how to "activate" it) the other one is rubbish and will stop the brain that is amazing from doing it's job. Gobbledegook? Maybe... But I do explain it all in this episode… The link to the course that I mention at the end is: https://go.tantrumkitesurf.com/vsl
There's no doubt that kitesurfing is one of the hardest sports to get to grips with...but not for the reasons you probably think...sure the waterstart is hard but there's a lot more to it than that. Most people think that it takes ages to ride upwind in kitesurfing.
